Right. And because we don't control the media we only get one shot and

it has to be done so thoroughly that the media can't ignore it.

Go ask anyone you know who isn't politically aware

if they know that Ukraine was where the Russia hoax started and it was

the Obama administration and Hillary who did the colluding. I bet not

10% will know this.

Posted by: JackStraw at November 12, 2019 09:40 AM (ZLI7S)

1)
The media is going to do their level-best to ignore it and then,
failing that, cast it as "payback" and a "witch hunt" no matter how
"thorough". 2) You get no argument on the clueless-ness of the
population - I had to show, as in actually pull-up a link, of Biden
bragging about getting the Ukrainian prosecutor canned to someone who
claims to be "very aware" of what was going on. He'd never seen it - I
told him he needs to watch something besides CNN and MSNBC every once in
a while, which went over like you would imagine.
I'm all for "thorough". What I would also like to see is something resembling, well, urgency.

I think if you are going to troll, it is best to pick something technically true and then argue from the specific to the general. Find something obscure but technically true that you can hammer on. Don't say something demonstrably false that can be swatted away by anyone. Particularly don't do it with well published numbers, it is too hard to bring feelings into it.

Huck Finn never painted houses. He ran off down the river to keep Jim from being sold down the river.

The interesting thing is that Huckleberry Finn was a truly American Picaresque novel, which is a Spanish literary form (as in Lazarillo de Tormes) and I have never found out if that was intentional or not

132 What a delightful, playful and effective painting. There is plenty of background to provide a scene but all the colors are soft earth tones. It lets the viewer focus on the two women (girls) who stand out against the gentle background. The guy is needed for the theme but almost blends in with the wall. He is incidental. The girls' expressions and posture are the focus.

There is a sense of 'old story' about the image. This kind of thing has been a staple of young women for generations as they play up their adult figures and urges. It is something to be expected. But it is also gentle and, at least to me, retains a sense of innocence.

That is a lot to gather from a few seconds of study but those are the impressions I got.

As I'm sure you know, the Normans took over Sicily and most of southern Italy for a few centuries. I saw a good historical piece on the Normans and all of their conquests, and they made the point that the reason "Normans" aren't around (specifically) in any of the places they conquered (they're still in Normandy, of course) is that they believed in blending in with local populations and staying put. So, Normans became French, Normans became English, Normans became Sicilians.

In Italy the people dressed a lot better than we do. It is not completely fair to compare locals to travelers since locals have a lot more clothes to choose from and they don't come out of a suit case But it stood out, particularly in smaller towns how much better the locals dressed. heh, I had a feeling things had changed. America has changed, the UK has changed. But the Italy gawking stood out back in the day. It was never everyone or most people. But we encountered it with young males in public settings. I was with a large group of young men and women. Some Italian guys were really over the top but not in our case threatening. Just silly really.

I think you are probably right about the cell phones. I am glad I saw Europe before 9/11 and smart phones. It seemed happier back then, just more fun. I have been back and it can still be a great experience. But I prefer most everything pre Millennium to be honest.

And I think they took it over from the Moslem's, who had established a stronghold there, intending to move north from there.

So many good stories have happened over the years, and one (which was copied in the series "Vikings") actually did happen during the conquest of Sicily. A Norman/Viking army had a fortified city surrounded, but could not break through the walls. So suddenly one day they notified the City potentates that their beloved Leader had died, and his dying wish was to have religious rites read over him in a house of worship. If they would let them do that, then they promised to leave.

The City leaders were overjoyed, and quickly agreed. The funeral procession was let in with a few key men as pall bearers. In the middle of the service, the coffin lid flew open, the Leader jumped out, threw the axes he'd been laying on to all of his trusted warriors, they laid waste to the unsuspecting congregation, raced to the city gates, and threw them open. Then their entire army which had been standing by rushed in and sacked the city.

Damn, they knew how to fight. As the City Leaders died, I'm sure they were shouting "you guys are such assholes!!!"

Well, my brother was there about 12 years before this last trip. He said flat out that things changed a lot since he was there the first time. Somebody had told me there was a lot of graffiti when they went, but I didn't see that. Rome looked pretty clean, from the parts I saw. They even had cleaned the entire outside of the coliseum. It looked great. I guess like here, it depends on who is running the joint.

301 245 Hello horde.

Looking for advice. Has anyone sued for slander per se? Accused of having an affair. It is a lie.
Posted by: Denny Crane! at November 12, 2019 10:27 AM (Lr5Wu)

Difficult - you can look up long definitions of FindLaw and sites like that. Your two biggest stumbling blocks will be
A) you need to have someone who heard the slander, NOT yourself, who will swear under oath that they heard it said, by the party you are suing. Also testimony from others who heard it subsequently, from those who had been told it by the defendant.
B) you need to demonstrate that you yourself were directly (and not just theoretically) harmed by the Slander - ie, you lost a job, were shunned by community members, or were harassed. A tort suit is an attempt to "repay" you for the loss you have suffered, and so you have to establish the monetary amount of the loss to the Court's satisfaction.

Slander is spoken defamation, Libel is written defamation. Slander is generally much harder to prove, since libel obviously leaves a written record to rely on. Slander doesn't.

Yes, if the person you suspect is still out there saying it, that's always a good first step. It puts them on notice that you know what they're up to; it's also something you can show to anyone else who's heard the lie, to show them that you're fighting back against it.

There's always some people who tell tales just because it's a game to them, and they think that they will never be called on it. They're the stupid ones - of course others are more malicious. Maybe you know which type you're dealing with.

Sorta. He wanted to go, but his mother forced him to hide cuz she knew he'd die. Odysseus found him by showing weapons to the group of girls he was hiding with. He was the only one to show interest and gave himself away. I don't think it's in the Iliad though. While in hiding, he got frisky with one of the girls and fathered a son. This son was later retrieved by Odysseus and helped in the last battle at Troy.

No, not really.

A monarchy would be the best form of governance for a good portion of the world's countries at this stage of development. Representative republics are about the hardest thing to institute and keep going (as we're seeing now), so it's far to complex for most countries.

I keep insisting that the world's billionaire class should compete to control the planet's shitholes via monarchy. Take over any third-world nation with a small mercenary force, lop off a few heads to show who's in charge and get to governing.

Everyone loves a royal title, with billionaires right at the top of the list. Why not use all that excess money to lord over the lives of an entire country?

Amazing - some of those deeply committed to the graft, I suppose, are *still* trying to flog the Syrian horse, even after the MSM have given up on it. So what do they do? They commit a crime, leaking classified material, and they STILL have a big nothingburger to show for it.

as an aside, will their be killings and shootings and mayhem in that part of the world? Well of course, it's been going on for 1400 years there, it'll go on for another 1400. But it's not our circus, and not our monkeys.

Monarchy is only ever as good as your monarch, the royal family's parenting skills, and their ability to keep unworthy heirs away from the big chair.

Basically, it's a total crapshoot.

Democracy also has no inherent virtue. It's only as good as the people who vote. An inattentive, immoral population will vote for all manner of monstrosity as long as that goverrnment gives them a cut of the loot.

A representative Republic has some inherent virtue, in restraining the excesses of power via process, and forcing deliberation and compromiss, but if it's laws are perverted, it falls into dysfunction.
