There I was, knee deep in concrete dust and jihadi piss. My partner
"Timmy" (I won't give his name because I don't him to be embarrassed)
put the breaching charge the wrong way and I had to reset it before
diving for cover. Where was I? Oh yeah, the breaching charge.
It
went off and I charged in growling and snapping. Jihadis were
everywhere and Timmy cried out "Good Doggeh, we're doomed!" I snarled my
defiance and went for them, tooth and claw deployed. "I can't believe
that worked," bleated Timmy. I barked back "Just like training - train
as you fight - Get Down You Fool!" I pushed Timmy to the earth covering
him as the grenades went off. Sure it was loud, but that only got me
pumped up.
After taking more down I found the tunnel. Easy to
find for one with my nose - just follow the piss, shit, and goat smell
and there it is. I ignored every order, charging ahead. I had to get
there before they got set. Well "they" were three kids and that fat
bearded turd of an "ascetic" they had. "I've met many religious people,"
I barked, "but fat ones are all frauds."
Well this guy cried
and peed like Derby Winner, disgusted me so much I was just going to
make it quick when he slipped on his own filth. I could see he dropped
his vest button and his size 56 ass was going to land on it. Leaping
back I covered my ears and hoped Doggy-Cam would catch it all.
I
woke up back in the chopper and saw the head of that fat choad in a
bucket. I yipped at that 'Oh, yeah pally - I got you. Big bad taken down
by a girl!" Yeah that'll be a night to always remember.

No one was there.
The only time I was 100% convinced it was a ghost.

I had a cat who died years ago and for about two years or so after I could feel him jump up on the bed and start walking on it. Then it just stopped one day and never happened again. I suppose you could say maybe I dreamed it or what not, but usually I was wide awake when it would happen, like just lying down to go to sleep or getting ready to take a nap. It wasn't half sleep or starting from a full sleep this would happen when I just laid down.
Other one is more recent. It was August or September and I was taking a nightly stroll on a bike path near the house after it got dark out. You enter the area through a small path between two houses and then turn right to go further down the path. Houses border right up to the path and someone put some lights out so that it illuminated part of the path. As I turned to start on the path I saw a creature starting to cross over the path from those lights to the trees lining a creek on the other side. Now I'll admit right off that I need glasses I'm getting old and I'm putting it off but my vision isn't terrible or anything. This thing was not a raccoon, a possum, or a dog or even a cat. It was white with splotches that looked pink and yellow and really wide looking and low to the ground. It was big too, bigger than a cat or a dog or any animal I would expect to see. It heard me and darted into the tree line. Amazingly I kept walking and even came back that way later to get home and didn't see it again. It was only later thinking back on it that I got sort of freaked out about what it might have been.

I've experienced something similar in the Excelsior Hotel, Jefferson Texas, built in 1851. 2 story hotel, all furnished with 1880's furniture (they do have modern bathrooms, though - with clawfoot tubs) So we were there in the offseason, building has a couple of wings, we were in the oldest part, only ones in that wing that night. So about 3 am heard someone going up the hallway outside, stopping and checking every door, and then just fading away towards a locked door at the end of the hall. We stuck our heads out the room door, because it seemed odd, and there hallway smelled overpoweringly of cigar smoke.
So we asked the desk clerk about it, thought he was staying below us, he said "no, I live about 2 blocks away, I closed up at 10 pm, got back at 7 this morning." So I said who was here? and he said "oh no those doors were locked all night, it was just you." I told him what I heard and he just said "well you're not the first."

Dunno if it qualifies as spooky, but our house is haunted. One ghost walks across the front yard, disappears on the porch, but reappears walking through the front bedroom. Freaks the dogs out every time he shows up. He apparently predates the house and is just walking his fields, so I have no issue with him. We think he's buried in the cemetery three houses over.
The other ghost... she's sweet. She was the wife of the man who built this place. Named Fanny Mae. She kisses you on the forehead after you've gone to bed.
But the freaky thing she did happened when we started rehabbing the bedroom. We kept hearing noises in the closet, in the middle of the night, like 2-3 am. Loud noises, enough to wake up up, like things moving around, scraping. Thought it was our daughter (whose bedroom closet backs on our closet) moving things in the middle of the night. We stormed into her room a couple days running, but she was always asleep in bed.
I decided it was rats or something in the walls. I started pulling the drywall off...and found a picture, hidden in the closet.
Took it to our neighbor (he was born and raised in our house.) It was the picture that had always hung in the living room when he was growing up. He thought it was funny, because he had been thinking about it randomly for the last month, wondering what had happened to it. We gave it back to him.
Never had another noise from the closet, since then. I think Fanny Mae is happy now.

Problem is, Doc Martin basically ruined Cornwall tourism. It had always been sorta a place to "go on vacation" for Brits not wanting to leave the country, but ever since Doc Martin became popular, all of Cornwall is overrun by looky-loos. I went to Port Isaac before the show -- it was deserted. No one had ever heard of it. Very picturesque. After the show? Packed to the gills with loutish tourists.

The absolute weirdest dream I had happened the other night. In fact I am on some BP meds now and ever since, my dreams are freaking bizzare. I had a dream that I was with my dad on a tug boat that got hung up on a sandbar so I swam to shore, I went to get help and this long haired red headed guy offered to let me just take his tow truck (like that would help with a boat?) As he was explaining the levers etc. Debby Harry from Blondie showed up with a microphone and introduced me. And that was the end of the dream. I actually woke up and started laughing. Da Fuq?

No shot, there I was, training night patrol in a German forest, 2004. Moving with NVGs on, of course, but the barely did anything because the forest was so thick. Those Woodgate so dark you can feel it. I can see why the ancient Gauls and Teutons thought the woods were fully of spirits and malign entities.
I'm close to the back; six or seven guys. Suddenly there's shouting from up front. Run up, flashlights on, and my team leader loos like he's fallen through the Earth. He's in the ground up to his armpits, with his arms and rucksack being the only things keeping him from from falling. No hole around him, you understand; he looks like the earth's trying to suck him down. Says his feet aren't touching.
Pull him out and look down inside. The hole opens up to a ten foot drop onto a smooth concrete floor. Can't see the walls of the space or anything. Radio it in and get told to continue mission if nobody's hurt.
Move a couple hundred yards and set down for a minute. Over by a clearing in the trees, there's a stone or concrete archway with stairs leading down into the ground. By now a couple of guys are starting to get a bit skittish. Nobody wants to go near this fucking thing. Leave the area shortly after.
Found out later that it was a long abandoned rifle range, probably world war 2. They'd covered the target pits with timbers and boards and let the forest reclaim the whole area; team leader fell through rotten timbers and the stairs had been the stairs that went down to the butts for the target crews.
Pretty never wracking at the time, though.

My office space in downtown Frederick MD was haunted. Footsteps, doors opening and closing, unexplained pipe smoke, voices. That kind of stuff. Didn't seem malevolent but was scary as hell nonetheless. Building dated from the 1840's and was in the crossroads of a lot of civil war action.

I also used to live in an old farmhouse. After I moved in some neighbors told me "you know that house is haunted don't you? Nobody ever stays there more than six months. I ended up living there for five years and still never saw anything. Maybe ghosts don't like me.

Problem is, Doc Martin basically ruined Cornwall tourism. It had always been sorta a place to "go on vacation" for Brits not wanting to leave the country, but ever since Doc Martin became popular, all of Cornwall is overrun by looky-loos. I went to Port Isaac before the show -- it was deserted. No one had ever heard of it. Very picturesque. After the show? Packed to the gills with loutish tourists.

The go to for any spooky movie is 'large and labyrinthine.' Old victorian mansions had it. Event Horizon has it with the space ship. Most houses these days do not.
Although I am betting you could do something good with tenement housing no matter when it was built. As long as you have hallways and doors facing inwards and a lot of rooms, the potential is there.

I enjoy Vincent Price more and more - first, the Edgar Allen Poe series he made with Roger Corman is over the top Gothic; and then for my favorite Halloween Horror, there is a trio he made in 1971 - 1972: The Abominable Dr. Phibes, Dr. Phibes rises Again, and Theater of Blood. All quite gory, over the top, and 3 of the most darkly hilarious horror movies I've ever seen.
Theater of Blood is probably the best, and it's almost never shown: Vincent Price plays an aging actor who takes himself very seriously but who has always been disparaged by Critics as being too schlocky and hammy; so one by one he murders them all in the most gruesome scenes out of Shakespeare's plays. I think there's a lot of the real Vincent in that one, and Diana Rigg makes a very nice surprise appearance!

I recall reading several years ago a post at Small Dead Animals. There was a local tv station in Ontario that put together a kids' show "The House of Frightenstein" (which is true, I have seen a couple of episodes). This was in the late 1960's early 1970's and they had a small budget, but they wanted Vincent Price to read these little bits of verse at the end.
Price agreed, cut his fee because "it was a kids' show". Price shows up and the costume him up and he runs through half of the stuff. He only had to read the little lines once and he could repeat it in his perfect style. They take a break and he's disappeared and they wonder what happened. Well, Price comes back, he had the taxi driver take him to the Beer Store and he picked up a case for the crew and then sat and told them stories of old Hollywood and of the actors and actresses before they got back and finished up their recordings. And he signed pictures for people and posed for snapshots.
I remember reading it and thinking "Why can't more people be like that and just not be a jerk?"

That is a good one, but the reason older buildings work better for that is most of the modern ones are much more open in floor plan. Narrow corridors and smaller rooms everywhere just lend themselves better to horror.

When I got to Claremont Men's College in the fall of 1979, some of the baseball players told the story that, in May earlier that year, they were at the Division III Western Regional baseball tournament in Chicago -- and there was a game that, had they lost, they would have been on the famous American Airlines Flight 191 (from Chicago to Los Angeles) that lost one of its engines and part of the wing on takeoff, killing everyone aboard.

There's been stories for years that underneath the campus of University at California Irvine, a labyrinth of tunnels were dug. It was a half-assed nuclear war/civil defense idea. (The campus was originally built in 1965, but has had tons of new buildings and renovations put in since then.)
The problem is of course, there was really no plan, rhyme or reasoning behind the design of the labyrinth, and no evacuation plan or even organization of the system was ever developed. People who claim to have toured the tunnels say they found them very creepy.

I believe Vincent was one of those actors who everyone liked to work with - when he prepared for a part, he didn't just memorize his own lines, he memorized every line in the script (he was no dummy) and he could cue anyone who missed a line.

I saw Vincent Price do a one man stage show back in the day. Nearly two hours of recitations, memories, funny stories. Enthralling.
I have the cookbook he and his wife accumulated, traveling the world for recipes, with stories about the context, service and so on, on my bedside table. Lovely piece.

My dog has taken to staring at the ceiling over my favorite chair in the
living room when I'm sitting in it, her eyes following something
hovering up there. Every now and then her head cocks to the side as if
she's listening. Also sometimes she flees to the other side of the room,
looking back as if she's being chased. It creeps me out.

We got upstairs and were looking at the bedrooms. I opened the door to one, turned on the light, and the first thing I saw was a daybed, with the brass rails, and the fluffy white thing around the lower part, and the pillows with the frills.
The creep went right up my spine right then, it took a lot to keep me from bolting. I just said something non-sensical like "Interesting," closed the door and moved on and was so totally glad to be out of that house. If that house - built in the late 1970's was not haunted, then they owners were putting out a bait pile for ghosts.
You want ghosts? Well creepy daybed in an otherwise empty hose is how you get ghosts.

I've been in two aircraft 'Incidents'. The lesser, was going off of the runway in Cincinnati, the serious one was striking an approach-light tower in the fog while landing in Augusta Georgia.
The latter was a *very* attention-getting experience. I really didn't think I would ever fly again, but I have.

I have > 1000 nights in the Central American jungle, sleeping in deep, in Mayan caves, in Mayan building remains, and... others... that predate, we thought, the Mayans. Olmec, Toltec or lord knows.
One cave, something waaay in the back is alive. And Does Not Like Humans. Violent, angry go away vibes. Lights die, just peter out. Swim back out, they come on again.
Other caves, you better give thanks and make an offering before bedding down or it's nasty nightmare city. Do so, and you sleep like a baby.

Way back when in the mid 1970's we were camping at a park near the Straits of Mackinac (UP side). My family and Uncle Fred's family. So we were being pests and dad suggested we go to this old cemetery and find out whcih was the oldest gravestone. And idiotically we did - I was about eight, Matt about four, Tom about eleven, Pat about 10. We did find some old gravemarkers, back to the 1850's-1860's.
And then it started to get dark and Tom and Pat decided to scare me and Matt. They did such a good job we bolted. Alas, Matt tripped and I trampled him. He eventually caught up after Tom and Pat finished scaring us and then scared themselves into bolting.
I ran all the way to the campsite, about a half mile or so without stopping. Pretty good wind I had that young.

If you want a good scare read The Man From the Train. Theory is that a train travelling psycho went around the country killing entire families. (There was a spike in family murders, by a non-family member, during that time, circa 1912). MO was houses near the train station, no dog(s) on the property, family with multiple kids, used a hatchet found on the property, covered all the mirrors in the house, etc.

On the first leg of the flight, he started hearing what sounded like a girl or a young woman sobbing in the back of the aircraft. He knew he was alone, and could see that the rear of the helicopter was empty.
He made a precautionary landing, found nothing to explain the noise. As soon as he took off again, the sobbing resumed. He heard it all the way to his destination ... but when he took the mechanic at that base up on a check flight, the noise was gone.
He never did find an explanation for the sobbing, and never heard it again when he flew the aircraft, but he said at least one other pilot had the same experience while flying solo in it.

Like I said about house-hunting and then coming across that daybed in that otherwise empty house. I totally felt the wrong and kept enough together for dignity and self-respect to get out and never go back.

I really liked The Ring (the Amurrcan one). Nicely creepy. Several viewings have taken the edge off, but the first time I saw it was memorable.

Scott Adams explained during the last election that novel things are persuasive. Those terms are novel in politics so they help the stories and perspectives rise above the fray. Trump used this to his advantage in 2016 with stuff like "low energy" and "lyin'". That had never been done before and it was attention grabbing. Yes, Lyin' is new in politics. "Lying" isn't. But "lyin'" had probably never ever been heard before.
It helped that he was 100% correct, but you can be correct and be ignored. As most (good) Republicans are when trying to explain the failure of socialism/communism etc. It bores people. You need to grab attention.

After my parents divorced, my mom and I moved into a house that hadn't been updated in years. The extended family came up and did a big one-day renovation and repainting kind of thing, and it looked a lot better.
But one thing that always bothered me was the basement, particularly the stairs. They were the kind that had no backs on them, so you could see through them. I hated those damn stairs. Our cat did, too, and we'd put him down there when there was company and he figured out how to turn the knob to get out!
We moved away about a year later and I largely forgot about the place, but when reminiscing about it some time ago, my mom remarked "Yeah, it was creepy.
The old lady who lived there before us hanged herself in the basement - right behind the stairs. I kept it from you so you wouldn't be scared. That was why we could afford it - no one else wanted to buy it."

Just keeps piling on the unease and creepiness till that final scene toward the end....if the hair isn't rising on your neck by then...well...give up horror movies.

My uncle was stationed in Libya in the early sixties. He was going to take a flight, but had a flat tire on the way and missed it. Took a few weeks to find the wreckage of that plane in the Sahara.

Something similar has happened, the scammers used my number to place robo-calls. So, someone 'redials' the number (mine) and I answer.
Me: "Hello"
Caller: "Who is this?"
Me: "Who is this?"

Like I'd seen it move out of the corner of my eye and could feel it was "something". We always greet these things the same way. Welcoming and friendly. They don't hang around.
Anyway that same night at around midnight we were laying in bed about to drift off to sleep and our cordless phone beeps and then lights up, as it does if you had just put it back in the cradle. It was across the room. That was the last of it, but so friggin' weird.

I don't really relish these encounters. They're not fun. I don't repeat them as scary stories, though they were. But Jesus name prevailed every time.
