As part of the House's impeachment inquiry, Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, a director of national security affairs at the National Security Council, is expected to testify Tuesday that he listened to the July phone call between President Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the Situation Room, and reported his concerns to the NSC’s lead counsel. In prepared remarks obtained by Fox News, Vindman wrote: "I did not think it was proper to demand that a foreign government investigate a U.S. citizen, and I was worried about the implications for the U.S. government's support of Ukraine."

The intelligence community and professional diplomats believe they are the one who should be in charge of this country and have thought so since at least FDR. The Church Commission was a minor bump in the road but it convinced what we now call the Deep State that it needed to branch into US politics.
This plan came to fruition with the election of George H W Bush. Since then, the Deep State has had an iron grasp on foreign policy and has been allowed to do as it pleased. Clinton didn't give a rat's ass about foreign policy and, hey, the end of history and all that.
W is his father's son and 9/11 only gave the Deep State open political support for nigh to unlimited spying powers. The Deep State turned a massive, massive failure to its advantage.
Obama's foreign policy was Foggy Bottom's wet dream of globalism and rule by the experts.
Then came Trump. Trump is outside the system. Trump thinks they are idiots, not gods among men. Trump was identified nearly immediately as a threat and has been treated accordingly. And now that Trump won't roll over, like, say, Paul Ryan and John Roberts did, the Deep State is a cornered animal and is lashing out.

A lot of the generals will do anything they are ordered. Not all, but too damn many. There will be a handful of patriots, and the lower ranks will ignore the chain of command to follow whichever faction they agree with.

This is a spot on assessment.
Diplomats generally choose people like them to join the ranks of the diplomatic corps. Generally Ivy League, liberal, etc. Passing the Foreign Service Exam is difficult, and from the moment you report to A-100, the beginning diplomat training class, you are told you are among the elite. That feeds your ego, especially if you were a dweebish intellectual in college/grad school.
If you rise in the ranks, you gain power, and you think you are really something. That self importance, especially after spending time living in a region and hobnobbing with the literati of the host country fuels the decision making at State. So they think they know more than anybody else about diplomacy. In some cases, they actually might, but those people tend to be helpful, rather than obstacles to actual foreign policy that is the United States ' interest.
They usually do not last long. They are not promoted and forced out, leaving the group thinkers to remain and screw things up more.

On the larger point, the more I learn about the bureaucrats surrounding the president, the less I like. They seem to believe the job isn't so much to advise the president as to direct him. And when he doesn't do what they want they undermine him.

This isn't good for Nancy.
The electoral in red districts will have the impression that their Democratic congress people aren't stopping impeachment because it keeps going.
And there will be no vote where the red district Democrats can vote against impeachment and take it back to their constituents as proof that they are working against impeachment.
Instead of killing impeachment and giving her moderate Democrats a win they can take back to their constituents, Nancy's trying to have her cake and eat it too. The activist left will also get tired of this at a certain point and engage less with the Democratic Party as a whole when they realize that it's failure theater.

As a Jew, myself, I wish people would stop hanging angel wings on us, and assume purity of motives, because "chosen". I used to do this myself, then a Hillel rabbi in East Lansing told me and my friends to stop pretending Jews are perfect saints. We're not, and Russian Jews were not all saints in the Soviet Union and Kaganovich and Yagoda were instrumental in the Ukraine famine in the 30s. I would be curious if Vindman's family left because they were religious or due to their politics. If politics, were they dissidents against Moscow, or fearful of being associated with the leadership? Before Ilhan, I thought we vetted people thoroughly, I am no longer sure.

For all the loose talk about no "due process" in the "inquiry" (which is undoubtedly true) the missing forest for the trees is that the first requirement of due process is to know what you're being charged with. This is the cornerstone of 500 years of Anglo-American legal tradition, and embedded in the basics of due process in Constitution.
Without starting with "a charge" or even jurisdiction of a "prosecutor" there is no due process possible, no matter how many witnesses you can call in your defense, if you can cross examine etc. because the "charges" are entirely open-ended i.e. Your Life is on trial. Put another way, this is The Trial brought to life, and they want DJT to play the part of Joseph K.
