Pre-Halloween Creepy Realization Thread:
You're Living in a Simulation, and There's Always a Glitch

Think you perceive the world accurately?

Think your memory is sound?

Okay, then:

Question:

In the original Judy Garland Wizard of Oz -- yes, the one you all remember -- what color was the gun the Scarecrow wielded?

What's that? You say, "What are you talking about, he didn't have a gun!!!"

Yes he did.

And no, it's not a deleted scene.

And also no: Not when the actor is playing him as a farmhand. No, I mean when he's the actual Scarecrow.

It's not a trick question.

It's in the movie.

The Scarecrow is packing heat.

Not under his clothes. He takes out the gun and wields it.

So what color was the Scarecrow's gun?

Wait to hit the comments or "view more" until you've thought it over and searched your memory.

The answer is "silver." The Scarecrow is packing a silver revolver.

Sometimes your own brain has an Uncanny Valley in it.

Ethan Van Sciver mentioned this on The JACK show, on Cecil's channel. It should be cued up to the Scarecrow's Got a Gun discussion.

This is the Mandela Effect, that's what I'm talking about.

It's sort of like when Santa Claus starts handing out medieval weapons in The Lion, The Witch, and Wardrobe, but I do remember the "Presents from Father Christmas" scene.

10 Actually, don't. I was half asleep, but I remember the revolver because I'd never noticed it before. Lots of little stuff you can pick up on if you watch a move 100 times or so, trying to get a kid to calm down.

My middle kid was fascinated with that movie. It's actually really good and I didn't mind the repeated viewings. It was better than Sponge Bob or the other crap she could have been watching.

58 Abstract: A corollary of the Simulation Argument is that the universe's computational capacity may be limited. Consequently, advanced alien civilizations may have incentives to avoid space colonization to avoid taking up too much 'calculating space' and forcing a simulation shutdown. A possible solution to the Fermi Paradox is that analogous considerations may drive them to avoid broadcasting their presence to the cosmos, and to attempt to destroy or permanently cripple emerging civilizations on sight. This game-theoretical equilibrium could be interpreted as the 'katechon' - that which withholds eschaton - doom, oblivion, the end of the world. The resulting state of mutually assured xenocide would result in a dark, seemingly empty universe intermittently populated by small, isolationist 'hermit' civilizations.

89 My favorite Mandela effect since it's my experience:
In the awful Bond movie "Moonraker" when Bond and Jaws (Richard Kiel) fight some battle, Jaws comes crashing down out of the sky and instead of getting killed, gets up and brushes himself off... and then that pigtailed blonde nerd girl shows up.
He smiles at her with his metal teeth.
She smiles back as the love music builds on the soundtrack, and as I (and others) distinctly remember, the groan gag is that she's wearing braces.
But she is not wearing braces. She just smiles at him. So, not really a gag there if you watch the clip NOW... unlike in the previous programming of the Matrix when we ALL saw the damn braces back in 1980. I know I did.
And I'd very much appreciate the lame-ass teenage alien playing programming this simulation to QUIT FUCKING WITH ME

Yeah SOB is funny. And I loved Robert Preston in that. He's great every single time on the screen, but for some reason never seemed to get much work. Without him, Music Man would have sucked.

She smiles back as the love music builds on the soundtrack, and as I (and others) distinctly remember, the groan gag is that she's wearing braces.
But she is not wearing braces. She just smiles at him.

Yeah she had those old school industrial strength braces, too. That was the laugh.

Tami sent me an email asking if I could check on rickl, since he lives not too far from me, and hoped I could check on him. I was all too happy to help, and since I was not able to go there personally, I asked my partner - a fantastic detective - to do me the favor.

Any hoo, I was dumbstruck at how concerned and distressed than a fellow Moron may be in distress. I'm not a big name here, and I read more than I comment, but what makes this place special is the people. Tami, Ben Had, and so many more of you were truly concerned about another Moron's health, and it made me feel we aren't over the cliff yet.

Everything seems to be in order at rickl's house, but my partner is headed back tonight to check if the lights were on, and/or if she sees anyone inside.

Never seen those 3 either. No interest in anything except Oklahoma, although I hear you get real sick of that song (like that damned bazuki song in The Third man that completely ruins any sense of suspense or drama in several scenes).

199 89 My favorite Mandela effect since it's my experience:

Posted by: fescadi at October 25, 2019 07:53 PM (odMWV)

Holy fucking shit she absolutely did have braces. I can see her in my mind. And she had braces because OF COURSE she would because it's a gag to go along with Jaws.

What. The. Fuck.

Yes, the movie did well, but it was also very expensive, which cut into its profit margin.

It clearly spoke the sense of dread - depression without end and war clouds gathering. There's a reason Garland became a huge star and "Over the Rainbow" an instant classic.

Also important to remember that this movie was going up against some of the greatest movies ever made. Gone with the Wind, for example, which remains the biggest hit in movie history.

(Don't quote constant dollars, look at tickets sold. The thing was yuge.)

Just looking at the movies of 1939 makes one sad.

367 Read the last couple of William Gibson's books to see how living in a simulation works.

I don't find simulation Theory at odds with my belief in God and the Bible.

Let's get weird and mash some things up. Ray Kurzweil Singularity is Near. And The Rise of Spiritual Machines which came before it. Basic theory is that Moore's law applies to intelligence not just to transistors on a chip. At some point everything in the Universe is intelligent or Intelligent and then what?

Asimov short story about a computer AC - analog computer - that keeps getting smarter and smarter. Until it is the last thing existing and says Let there be light!

The experimentation that supports the concept of the simulation is that the Universe is ragged at the edges - particularly the really small edges. It starts looking pixelated. Of course, it may be that our really small experimentation sensors are not capable. But maybe there is not really a difference.

Think about Percival Lowell and Mars canals. He saw them. With his best instruments. The canals were the best we could see. Until the instruments got better. And then the canals were laughable.

But what if there were canals? And the "software" changed.

I am amazed at the detail I see in the clouds in the sky now. I do not remember them looking like that when I was young. I don't know if it is because I am older and more experienced, but I remember the puffy clouds and the wispy ones. The highly convoluted ones that look like brain matter, I don't remember. I certainly don't see paintings with those types of clouds.

Our knowledge of the universe gets different with our ability to see/discover it. You know that right now our understanding is that even though the Big Bang is the leading cosmological creation science, the universe is evenly distributed as far as we can see. There is no center that things are expanding from.

So all of that is a bit stream of consciousness, but in the end, whether we live in a simulation is immaterial - it is how we live.

417 It always bothered me that at the end of Wizard of Oz, you're never really sure if she really went to this wonderful land (if Oz really existed) or if she was just having fevered dreams of her farm life.

And yeah I think Famke Janssen is very lovely. She's got that bunny nose thing where the tip of her nose moves when she talks too, that's kinda cute.

The girl who hits me past my armor (other than Phoebe Cates) is Dana Wheeler-Nicholson. She didn't do a lot, sadly, but she was the wife in Fletch and Wyatt Earp's druggie girlfriend in Tombstone. She is like the prototype for how I want a girl to look, somehow. Wonderful voice, too

Eckhart saw Hell too. You know what he said? He said: "The only thing that burns in Hell is the part of you that won't let go of your life; your memories, your attachments... they burn them all away." But, "they're not punishing you" he said, "they're freeing your soul". So the way he see's it, if you're frightened of dying and-and you're holding on, you'll see devils tearing your life away. But, if you've made your peace then the devils are really angels, freeing you from the earth. It's just a matter of how you look at it, that's all. So don't worry, okay?

Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at October 25, 2019 08:19 PM (KZzsI)

****

Indeed. 1939 was a watershed moment in the "old Hollywood" studio system that generated some of the most wonderful movies of all time, including six, or even seven, that could be quite reasonably found in just about everyone's "top ten movies of all time list"

Now - want to really cry?

Here are the best picture nominees for 2017:
Arrival
Fences
Hacksaw Ridge
Hell or Highwater
Hidden Figures
La La Land
Lion
Manchester by the Sea
Moonlight

Eventual winner? The ghey one - Moonlight - a wholly unforgettable film, as were the rest, with the possible exception of Hacksaw Ridge and Manchester by the Sea. What an embarrassment Hollywood has become - for so many reasons.

Btw - I forgot the scarecrow's gun - but after seeing the still I do recall the scene. They had been sent to kill the witch and all had weapons of some kind (except Dorothy I recall). It was a bit of a toss-away "prop" gag, I think (a gun and some rope against a magic wielding witch who, with her talisman helm, could summon a vast army of flying monkeys to do her very bidding? Heh. Funny.)

489 Now - want to really cry?

Here are the best picture nominees for 2017

Yeah I kinda went off on Facebook recently, riffing on this concept. I started with 1999 (20 years ago) listing the best movies of each year, moving by 5 year increments. Every single year by this arbitrary choice (1939 was just coincidence) was packed with great, entertaining, and culturally significant films, as far back as 1934 where I stopped.

There were some somewhat dry spells (in the 60s it was a bit lackluster) but even they had better content than we get now. I almost feel bad for theater owners, they can only show what is made. If it weren't for films like Avengers, I think they would go out of business. Who wants to go to the movies these days for 12-15 bucks a ticket to see this crap?

Countdown
The Great Alaskan Race
Maleficent: Mistress of Evil
Zombieland: Doubletap
Gemini Man
The Addams Family animated
It Chapter 2
Joker

Every year its a host of crap with maybe one standout film, and even that isn't all that great.

And I'm not acting tough, I'll freely admit that about 80% of The Last Unicorn absolutely scared the piss out of me when I was little, and that's animated, not even live-action.

TWoO wasn't scary, it was just a chore. It was a classic movie that kids were supposed to like, so I had to endure it and pretend to like it, otherwise I'd be disappointing whoever was showing it. It was the movie equivalent of eating zucchini or tuna casserole. You had to do it and pretend to like it because it was a duty.

The problem is that it's difficult to translate enough of the background into a two hour film to make it understandable.

I have often enjoyed your posts, illiniwek.

Materialists want to use "Ockham's Razor" on this as if "explanation" was the same thing as "theory". To ex-plain something is to lay it out there and make it plain.

They want to collapse "entities", forgetting that Ockham's principle was no more entities than were needed to explain something in full.

So, they give us the handwaving called "emerging properties". Now, I'm not saying that that's not how it happened. However, the possibility that properties can "emerge" doesn't explain anything.

I get what your saying

but when you restore an early painting, you don't really use "paint"

it's a matter of many layers of a colored glaze, which is probably refracting the light

if you were to try to match a black area on a painting with a "black" paint

well, you'd have a mess

you have to be able to see the color underneath

which takes many years to perfect

731 Abraham: cool. Hey wife, god said I had to sleep with the maid. No, seriously.

Sarah: that isn't how I heard it.

Actually she's the one that suggested her maid, then she got mad at the maid and hated Hagar for having a kid when she could not.

Still, funny bit.

Guess where they got a screwy name like that.

1914, "TikTok of Oz," L. Frank Baum.
First robot character, sort of ("robot" not invented yet).

And, "Baum wanted to get paid."
Not for this one, he didn't. He'd died in 1919.

742 They probably just handed out whatever "weapon" props were around the studio, because the other two were armed too. Because the forest was so spooky.

The Mandela part of the "Mandela Effect" always bugs me, because I remember growing up how Mandela turned out to be mediocre at politics after he got out of prison and became President of South Africa. It wasn't as bad as Zimbabwe, but that's a low bar to pass.

To me, people killing him off in prison in their minds tells me they'd rather he be a martyr, instead of showing how South Africa didn't improve after apartheid ended.

744 "they give us the handwaving called "emerging
properties". Now, I'm not saying that that's not how it happened.
However, the possibility that properties can "emerge" doesn't explain anything."

Posted by: Axeman

yeah, I'd never heard of emerging properties ... but I think even Einstein saw an intelligence ... he then went on to claim that "but a belief in a personal God is crazy". His world was the physics and math ... but even there he saw "intelligence".

So on a simpler level I think .. if Einstein saw a far superior intelligence behind the physics (creation) ... why the heck would there not also be an intelligence behind the soul life, and the spiritual life, the personal life? "If I were God", I'd get tired of just doing math.

It is our nature to enjoy other life ... maybe we didn't come up with that on our own, maybe it is innate, given to us.

That's a current day Siamese - wedge head. Or rather, since it doesn't have the pointed fur it is a wedge head Oriental.

Mengele cat breeders usurped several cat breeds and mutated them to hell. Wedge Head siamese, Persians with Peke-face, and Burmese that often die of skull deformities because they are going for a certain look.

Poor animals.

The Myth of Jason and the Golden Fleece is like a pre-Iliad/odyssey adventure tale. The golden sheep flew out of Greece to the far side of the Black Sea.

758 The biggest Mandela Effect for me is the scene with Jaws and Dolly. She had braces. She doesn't now. WIthout her having braces the scene doesn't even make sense.

Posted by: Chestertonrocks at October 25, 2019 10:36 PM (VvtSf)

759 The Mandela Effect is that Stephen Biko died around the time most people heard about Mandela for the first time. Since most people can give a F for one third world revolutionary versus another, people mixed up their names.

The glitch is that we don't really remember coherent stories. We reconstruct them, when called upon to remember them. The Scarecrow holding a gun never imprinted on my brain. Maybe I never noticed, maybe it slipped out of my head. Either way, everytime you "remember," you are only building connections on the fragments that are there.

The simulation is that you and me eist in the same world, rather than that we all live in 7 billion different minds that never interact except through the impressions we make on each other.

The person who lives behind me is on the other side of a tall fence. His home could be a portal to another universe without it affecting my life at all.
