Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Saturday Overnight Open Thread (10/26/19)![]() An Engineer dies and goes to Hell. Dissatisfied with the level of comfort, he starts designing and building improvements. After a while, Hell has air conditioning, flush toilets and escalators. The engineer is a pretty popular guy. One day God calls and asks Satan, "So, how's it going down there?" Satan says, "Hey things are going great! We've got air conditioning and flush toilets and escalators, and there's no telling what this engineer is going to come up with next." God is horrified. "What? You've got an engineer? That's a mistake - he should never have gone down there! You know all engineers go to Heaven. Send him up here! " Satan says, "No way. I like having an engineer on the staff. I'm keeping him." God says, "Send him back up here or I'll sue!” "Yeah, right," Satan laughs, "and where are you going to get a lawyer?" The ONT Is Always Looking Out For YouTM Don't do this.............. Ingenious? Or destructive? A rock in West Omaha is catching everyone’s attention for its ability to wreck cars. That’s right, this is not a Hollywood movie pitch, I’m talking about a rock, not The Rock. Someone put it in place to stop drivers from cutting the corner, but some of them still do it. And get owned. Since the rock is more or less shaped like a ramp, if a car hits it with just a little bit of force, it gets stuck right on top of it. Locals have been documenting these incidents and they even created a Facebook group to share them. It might not be one of the popular ones (yet), but it sure is amusing. Well this didn't work out too well. But, he did die doing something he enjoyed, so there is that. The worst nightmare of any hunter checking on a kill occurred in Arkansas. ![]() Damn, I'm not as remote as I once thought. Nothing surprises me anymore. However, I did raise an eyebrow at this one. Trial by Kyle.
"Auto-Brewery Syndrome", drunk without drinking? After years of inexplicably getting drunk without drinking alcohol, having mood swings and bouts of aggression, landing a DWI charge on the way to work one morning, and suffering a head injury in a drunken fall, an otherwise healthy 46-year-old North Carolina man finally got confirmation of having alcohol-fermenting yeasts overrunning his innards, getting him sloshed any time he ate carbohydrate-laden meals. Through the years, medical professionals and police officers refused to believe he hadn’t been drinking. They assumed the man was lying to hide an alcohol problem. Meanwhile, he went to an untold number of psychiatrists, internists, neurologists, and gastroenterologists searching for answers. Those answers only came after he sought help from a support group online and then contacted a group of researchers at Richmond University Medical Center in Staten Island, New York. By then, it was September of 2017—more than seven years after his saga began. The New York researchers finally confirmed that he had a rarely diagnosed condition called “auto-brewery syndrome.” The Most Depressing places on earth. Well, at least their names. Bone-in Ribeye tenderizes man. From Alexander the Great being buried alive to one man paying to watch a little girl be cannibalized, these true horror stories go way beyond Rated R. Be careful of who you grind. Genius Award Winner. OCTOBER 22--The Alabama woman who was recorded grinding her rear end into the crotch of a cop attempting to handcuff her early Sunday is facing a pair of criminal charges, according to court records. April Teale, 24, was arrested by police on misdemeanor disorderly conduct and harassment charges. The 2018 University of Alabama graduate was collared outside a Waffle House in downtown Tuscaloosa, just blocks from Bryant-Denny Stadium, where, earlier that evening, the Crimson Tide football team defeated the University of Tennessee. As seen in a brief video recording that has gone viral, Teale was pinned up against a Waffle House window as a cop sought to handcuff her. Teale took the opportunity to press her buttocks into the officer while breathily declaring, “Oh, yeah, you like that? You like that, yeah?” Tonight's ONT has been brought to you by Irish Rolling Pins. ![]() Notice: Posted with permission by the Ace Media Empire, AceCorp, LLC and your favorite watering hole. About the rock: Yes, Omaha drivers are that stupid. I could write a hundred page post about my many narrow escapes. I keep suggesting that if the Omaha City Council wanted to make itself usefull, it could decriminalize the use of turn signals. (It must be illegal because even the cops don't use turn signals.) We also have extremely under performing schools judging by the number of people who can't count to four.

Slightly serious:
My parents passed away some years ago now, but I was planning a visit back to my old hometown. One person I thought I'd look up was a friend of my mother's, who had also worked at the school I went to. I knew this person was in assisted living but I figured a visit would be nice. But when I tried to set it up I learned that the person I'd intended to visit is in intensive care after a serious accident. The moral of this story is: don't wait. Reconnect with that old friend NOW. Call up your relatives and say hi NOW. Send a letter to your favorite old teacher NOW. Who knows what can happen? @Insomniac and others like us who had extremely dysfunctional families and childhoods:
Don't know if it brings any comfort, but I'm currently reading through Dennis Prager's commentary on Genesis -- it really is stunning how much wisdom is contained in The Torah, and I regret I'd never really been taught that. [They should have called it "The Book of Wisdom."] Anyway, one of the major themes Prager observes is that EVERY family discussed in Genesis is dysfunctional. That is, it is really the norm. One other thing I've discovered after getting heavily into genealogical research the past three years is how dysfunctional the childhoods were of both of my parents and their parents ... crazy stuff, like children witnessing a murder/suicide of their father/mother then sent to an orphanage where they were abused by priests and nuns, and fathers cuckolded raising their non-biological children in resentment, etc. And lots of alcoholism ... The town I grew up in (for certain values of grew up), Lawrence Massachusetts, had a little hot dog stand off the side of Canal street - literally, hanging off over the canal on a pier, probably for some quaint historic zoning or tax reason. They did footlong dogs, deep fried, so the skin crackled and burst. They're called "rippers"; you'll see that kind of preparation around New England. The place was Lawton's, and it doesn't exist any more. So if you're wandering around Lawrence Massachusetts and want to find something similar, just call out "I need a foot-long ripper, here". Hi Horde - This got willowed from the last thread...but we've talked about this and it's an knowledgeable update on Durham/Flynn.
I have just come from a dinner with the former US attorney from the Eastern District (NY) and an actual acquaintance of Andy McCarthy of the Southern District (NY) and NR. The discussion obviously went to recent events revolving around Flynn and Durham - and Andy's rather limp discussion on Neil Cavuto' program today (where is Neil, by the way?). My friend would like to reiterated that: 1. Investigations are done by Local LE or the FBI case officers - NOT, I repeat not, by DOJ prosecutors - they get case officers assigned to them and they use them to gather evidence as needed - these DOJ lawyers build "cases" to prosecute - especially if they are criminal US attorney's like Durham. They're only purpose for being at the DOJ? To bring criminal cases that go to trial. Otherwise, they just recommend dropping them. 2. Rarely, if ever, do DOJ prosecutors meet up with an attorney of Sydney Powell's (Flynn's lawyer) caliber. The usual defendant's lawyer, even in a high profile case, is from a typical big DC or NY firm (Cleary Gottlieb, Arnold Porter, Cravath/Swain/Moore, or Fried Frank) where, in court, they have little experience or they figure they'll lose. So they settle. The DOJ's experience is to feast on these lawyers. Sydney Powell is different. 3. Despite what Andy says on TV, it is known among AUSA that you try to get targets to plead on the best case the target thinks you have, or, barring that, you get him to plead on the best case you actually have...but you may have neither that's worth a damn. The point being, if he violates your plead agreement, you had better be able to go to court and convict the target on the crimes you told the court were part of the plea. Not some other charge...judges will not be amused. 4. If you lose the case or its dismissed altogether based upon prosecutorial misconduct, it doesn't really matter what the plea agreement on file was - you will never return to this target or anything tangential to it - not fucking ever! 5. Given the quality of the defendant's attorney (Powell) and the info that has been fed her, its a near certainty that this is not a "high risk" play as McCarthy related on Cavuto's show today, but a quality play that puts the US attorney and the DOJ in a non-winnable corner - she wouldn't have proceeded if she wasn't certain or near certain of the outcome - she's not some partner at Baker McKenzie - she would play this to win. 7. My Friend is not certain how the judge (Jackson) will call it, these guys can be typically disposed to the DOJ lawyers, they know them and might be forgiving, but this judge has a reputation as being hard nosed with prosecution for these Brady violations. Wow, if I want a couple of dogs like that out here among the cows & corn, I'm'a hafta make 'em myself ... SAD ! Well I could ... but ...
Got a case or so of BallParks in the freezers in the basement ... and I made excellent pickle relish back in September ... no tomatoes, though. Aahhh, if only I wasn't 250-odd miles from Gene & Judes .... So others answered all the Linux & WINE questions back in the last thread, so I will just add an encomium for Linux Mint - every computer at Chateau D'Eez is Linux Mint except the Win10 atrocity Mrs Eez has for all her antique Adobe graphics / publishing programs, and the local server running Ubuntu Linux. Currently setting up an old laptop as a testbed to run her Adobe stuff under WINE or in a Win7 VM so we can lose that thing. That remoteness map is fun, but lacks ... what ... granularity ? There are a couple of Maidenhead Grid Squares in CONUS that are almost inaccessible to ham radio operators who collect such things. One on the CA coast, one on the mud flats of the Mississippi delta. Irish Rolling Pin is great, already sent that image to a couple of folks ! Rock story reminds me of, lemmee see, aahhh, somewhere in the far west chicago 'burbs a 24 hour gas station on (64 ?) with a landscaped median divider; early mornings you might often see some car that saw the open gas station and pulled a hard left ... bottomed out over the divider, all 4 wheels in the air. SAD ! O - tay, that's my screed for the night, bedtime here, g'night everyone ! Seeya inna mornin ! Posted by: sock_rat_eez - we are being gaslighted 24/365 at October 26, 2019 10:33 PM (bwo3w) 279

I was with family today - the mention of hard childhoods reminded me of an amazing story a sister in law told me today. We've been related for about 8 years, second marriages both for my wife's brother and her. She's a dedicated mom, does church work, came from Florida and other than leaving the impression that her childhood was unhappy, has never said anything about it. (although all of us noticed that she had NO childhood pictures of herself or her birth family)
So it came out that even though she lives in Louisiana now, she hates fish and seafood, and she suddenly said well, it was from the time when she was about 10 or 11, and her father had been beating both her and her mother more and more frequently, so one day her mother took her and they just left. No money, no place to go, so they found some homeless people camping in the woods near a beach, and the two of them lived under a tarp in those woods all summer. And they were always scared to leave for fear her father would find them and REALLY beat the hell out of them. So, she hates fish because for that entire summer, half cooked fish that they could scrounge up there near the beach was all the two of them could get to eat. and I thought ok, now that was a tough childhood. WW II anecdote, from Rick Atkinson's "The Day of Battle": Supposedly a U.S. private is ordered to march a captured German officer down a steep mountain path at night, under heavy enemy fire. One other thing about running Windows in a VM. Licensing. Unless you a retail license, which you then 'transfer" to the VM, you can't activate it. There are ways around that for Windows 7 and earlier. I wouldn't know anything about that, *cough*daz loader*cough*. With later versions, they locked down the activation enough that I don't think anyone has found a clean way around it. But Win 10 is fully functional, save for "personalization". But the above *cough* will get Windows 7 activated fine under a VM. It would be best to start playing around with it now, get Virtualbox and create the VM. You'll have tons and tons of updates, and Win 7 End of support is Jan 2020 -- after that no more updates, and who knows how long the Windows Update site will continue to work for it after MS pulls the plug. What I think is behind the "i Hate laywers" emotion: It's a gut reaction to our frustration at how Government, in all of it's manifestations, has expanded until in one fashion or another, it controls every facet of our lives. For criminals and the underclass, that dominance is represented by the Police, and that's who they hated, but for everyone else, a lawyer will be the one a private citizen deals with , and hence the one who gets blamed. (Even when the bureacracy is at fault, and they usually are, who ever knows who they are? Masters of disguise, they're like the insects that make themselves look like branches and leaves. It's very hard to stay angry at an impersonal force that you can never see, people have got to put a face on their anger.

Consigning Leonard Bernstein & Andrew Lloyd Webber to artistic hell? How VERY precious! You';re so... effete! Your mom must be proud. Posted by: mnw at October 26, 2019 10:46 PM (Cssks) *polite cough* I didn't say anything about ALW. As for Bernstein, I'm also not saying anything others have also said. I for one like his Mahler, Berlioz and Haydn. His CBS recording of the William Schuman 3rd Symphony is historic. His Falstaff is my favorite. We owe him a debt for his services to American music. But, really, outside of West Side Story, the Candide overture and, maybe the Chichester Psalms, what of his music really will endure? He complained he didn't want to go down in history as the composer of WSS. Someone nearby muttered, "Better that than 'A Quiet Place'." I isten to his CBS recordings and hear energy but poor ensemble. The later DG recordings are better played but the effects are so exaggerated as to make them unlistenable to me (Elgar's Enigma Variations, Tchaikovsky's Pathetique Symphony). I'd be the first to say Bernstein was a man of great talents. But I just don't buy into the hype around him. OK? Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at October 26, 2019 11:04 PM (7rVsF) 414

Someone was willing to write, in between campaigns, that Mrs Clinton regularly attended Methodist services in the District, and herself led a Bible study group. I am not a Methodist, and so would not know if it was true, but someone recently told me that they are against drinking.
There was a rock story in San Francisco. The heights opposite Cliff House were once the Sutro mansion (the Sutro baths are not far away, but around the corner). The estate became a public park, and for a long time was a classy place, with a sculpture garden. Somewhere in there (my aunt thought it was WPA era), some chicken-wire-and masonry imitation boulders were added, to create some sort of "Portals of The Past" scene. They lasted an awfully long time, but the park got abused, and by the 1970's they were an eyesore and a hazard, and so the city proposed removing them. And that's when you learn something about San Francisco. There was born a massive "Save Our Fake Rocks" movement, with fund-raisers, many protests, posters. I thought the bumper stickers must be a joke, until I made the mistake of asking about it. The movement managed to delay the improvement for several seasons. Since the rocks had not been built to last in the first place, and the park was a crime haven that was virtually abandoned by then, actually saving them was out of the question. But if you propose doing something in SF, someone will write a song against it. There are those who think that San Francisco has gone to hell all at once just recently. This is just not fair. I once sued a former collegue to whom I'd loaned a considerable amount of money -- as a favour, on easy terms... To make a long a story short, he didn't repay the loan...
I did, however, have the presence of mind to have him sign a promissory note for the loan, and my suit was over in literally two minutes with a judgement in my favour! No easy terms for him after that! Interest then set by the court, my lawyer fees paid by him, collection charges, etc.... Now that guy, he got bum-f*cked good and hard, and with no lubrication whatsoever! Posted by: Zettai Roshia-no Asetto at October 26, 2019 11:12 PM (7WaWV) 450

I have worked with many lawyers over the years, both directly and through interactions with the "other side." I can honestly say that the vast majority of lawyers are upstanding, moral folks who take their jobs very seriously. Only a handful of the lawyers I interacted with (none that I worked with directly) were of the bad variety. Sooner or later those bad apples got their comeuppance, either through poor reputations or ethical charges which resulted in losing their law licenses. Every lawyer I have worked with directly has been of good moral character and were fine human beings.

A Catholic priest, a rabbi, and a Baptist preacher are out fishing. "You know," said the priest, "we spend our days listening to the troubles of other people. Maybe since we're out here all alone, we should listen to each other's troubles." The others agree that this would be a fine idea. The priest starts. "I'm a compulsive gambler. I once lost all the money for the new roof on the church. Fortunately I won it all back again, but I know that sooner or later I'm doomed." The rabbi says "I'm a compulsive womanizer. I've slept with at least 50% of the women in my congregation, old, young, pretty, ugly, it doesn't matter." The preacher says "I'm a compulsive gossip, and I cannot WAIT to get back to shore." Every lawyer I have worked with directly has been of good moral character and were fine human beings.
Posted by: Legally Sufficient --------- I've known quite a few lawyers, a couple of them good friends, but, here's the deal. The very first thing that a law student learns is, 'For every argument, there is a counter-argument'. It need not be factual, honest, true, or anything, but it must be made. If you've been on the receiving end of that, it is not an endearing quality. I recognize this among my lawyer friends, at the drop of a hat, they will go into lawyer mode. It is easy to recognize. Every now and then, I have to remind one or another, 'You're making a lawyer's bullshit argument'. Anecdotal: For better or worse, I was once deposed by some very expensive Armani-suited Chicago lawyers. They oozed a 'We're going clean this rube's clock, and be on a plane back to Chicago tonight' vibe. Yeah...no. Discovery depositions are not at all like trial depositions. The lawyers most often are pretty clueless about what exactly to expect. Their problem, in this case, was that they were unaware that I had worked in forensic engineering for a while, and had far more knowledge of the process than they imagined. After a couple of days, and literal cheers and laughter from the defendant's (vicariously, my) lawyers, the Chicago crowd limped back to Chicago. Ultimately lost their case too. I've known quite a few lawyers, a couple of them good friends, but, here's the deal. Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at October 26, 2019 11:44 PM (KoKdw) A very significant part of my time at work is dedicated to compliance with federal regulations, and a lot of compliance people are either lawyers, or else frustrated lawyers who missed their calling. Lawyers and engineers can often get along very well, which sometimes surprises people. Engineers also know all the engineer tricks to watch for, and they're glaringly obvious when lawyers try them, because use different means to approach the same goal: given this set of rules and constraints, exactly what can I get away with? arguing the plain obvious language in law doesn't actually mean exactly what it says.-- Exactly what it says, eh? If the original occupants .... who took possession of the dwelling ... pursuant to the rental agreement with the owner no longer permanently reside there, an owner may increase the rent by any amount allowed by this section to a lawful sublessee ... who did not reside at the dwelling ... prior to January 1, 1996. (CA Civil Code section 1954.53(d)(2) Question: does the term "lawful sublessee" mean a person who is now a lawful sublessee and resided at the dwelling before 1996 but not as a sublessee (say, a minor child) or does "lawful sublessee" mean the condition/description of lawful sublessee must have existed before 1996? Yeah, I'm one of those lawyers, sort of. I read the legislative history of the law and figure out what they were trying to accomplish and then if the plain language doesn't sync up with the legislative history, try to figure out where the rub is. English is not the most precise language, sometimes legislators don't know the difference between a predicate nominative and a relative restrictive clause following a subordinating conjunction, and sometimes the plain language makes no damn sense. Conversely, play back the tracks of Airplane from the same songs, without Grace Slick's vocals. Minimalist, powerful, evocative. Yet empty without her vocals. Scammers, maybe?
Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at October 27, 2019 01:16 AM (QugKX) Speaking of scammers, my friend has encountered a new one. She's getting divorced and re-fi'd her house to pay off Shithead and get him off the deed. All fees/taxes have been paid and all the paperwork filed. She's now received two different mailings, one from CA and one from FL (she's in NY), claiming for around $100 she will receive her notarized copy of the deed, which she obviously already has. It seems as if scammers are going through public records on house sales and sending out these letters for small amounts because, as anyone knows when you buy a house, one just keeps writing check after check for this and that. If one doesn't look closely at the letters, one might think, 'Oh great, more fees' and just write another check. While Grace Slick could belt it out with the best of them, her voice also had a haunting quality on the softer Airplane songs. 'Pretty As You Feel', from 'Bark', and 'Triad', from 'Crown of Creation', are two such examples. Airplane didn't just rock, but they could do country rock/rockabilly quite well, too, as shown in the song 'The Farm' from 'Volunteers'.

I've slept with at least 50% of the women in my congregation, old, young, pretty, ugly, it doesn't matter." The preacher says "I'm a compulsive gossip, and I cannot WAIT to get back to shore."
