Casey Mattox -- a champion beta-orbiter of all the most egregious Ahoy Maties on Twitter, and is one of the few people "Pierre Delecto" followed -- guesses, or perhaps, was told by Mitt Romney himself (again sockpuppeting), that "Pierre Delecto" is almost certainly a play on in pari delicto, a Latin phrase meaning "both parties are equally to blame." I think it means literally, "in both, guilt." ("Delicto" also appears in in flagrante delicto, which I think means "blazingly guilty," that is, so guilty as to be on fire (in flagrante).) Sounds and awful lot like Mitt Romney is one of those "True Conservatives" who thinks conservatism is best expressed as a synthesis of a few conservative ideas with an awful lot of progressive ones. That's what the "Both Sides" people push.

Honestly, there is simply no way to know what impeachment or impeachment with a trial would mean. In normal times, you would assume it would lead to the end of the presidency because for Congress to go down that road, it would mean the country was behind them. But these are not normal times.

While we need a much wider scope, I think the republic can *maybe* be saved if just three parts of the government are completely dismantled, with everyone above GS-11 terminated and barred from civil service forever:
- The intelligence agencies. All of the intelligence agencies.
- The DoJ, including its KGB arm called "FBI"
- The State Department
A lot more than that is needed, but starting there would deal with a bulk of the problem.

No, there are not. But they clearly want to go down this road. We're hyper-polarized at the moment and a lot of the GOP want Trump gone and damn the consequences. I suspect that if the vote were secret, he'd be out after a 30-second trial in the Senate.
There are no grounds for impeachment and the entire thing is a farce, but these are not normal times and it looks like they're going to pursue it. McConnell is going to drag it out in the Senate if it happens. There is no way to know his motivation for that or what the consequences will be.
Will it move the needle on Trump's popularity? Probably. Which direction? I have no idea. Will the Senate vote to remove? I doubt it very much but I rank it as "outside possibility" if I had to lay a wager on it today.
Just because it is utterly preposterous doesn't mean they won't do it. As they drag out the proceedings in the Senate, they're going to be watching the polling (the real polls - the internal ones) like hawks to see if it's hurting Trump enough that they think they can get away with doing it.
There is nothing predictable about this - a partisan pseudo-impeachment without any controls, checks, balances or honor during a period where the president's own party hates him and everything is so shot through with corruption that corruption itself has become the state is entirely new territory.

I don't subscribe to that theory. Nobody does all that work for 18 months just to lose on purpose. But both of them kinda gave up when it looked like Obama would win. McCain I can't really blame since he really had no chance. No Republican could have won against him in 2008. Mittens however could have won had he played dirty, which he refused to do.

Nope, the reason there has been no vote on articles of impeachment is they can't find a crime.
Once they post that, with no crime THEN it will hit the courts.
But its another one of those cases where it does not seem to matter WHAT the Constitution actually says, just what the media tells you some Court said 150 years ago.
A High Crime, or High Misdemeanor, means you have broken some law. Really hard to make a case that the term Crime, or Misdemeanor, is not defined.
It leads to a case where we have Humpty Dumpty making legal definitions for the rest of us (which is already the case).

They're trying to square the circle now, but (if you'll pardon the mixed metaphor) they've painted themselves into a corner.
They can't kill it because that would disastrous for them, they can't vote on it because that would be disastrous for them regardless of outcome (unless the fix is in over in the Senate), and they can't just let it die and pretend it never happened because Trump will never let them and the Dem candidates all stepped in it by endorsing impeachment.
They have no way out, and so it could go in a very weird direction.

Yes, impeachment is a political act. It's also the only way to remove a president for committing illegal acts and no sane person is going to vote to remove Trump because he tweets mean things and gives leftists the sadz. There has to be an actual crime to get significant bi-partisan support and so far they have squat.
Particularly not when the real corruption from 2016 is about to start hitting the fan and changing the discussion completely.

I live surrounded on all sides by the northern Utah, Wasatch front Mormon nevertrumpers. They are all stuck in their little elitist bubble groupthink. I can never, ever reveal to them I'm an actual Trump supporter, that'd be utter social suicide. So much for supporting the republican POTUS in a deep red state! Depends on the area.
I get them thinking Trump is boorish and icky; they are still butthurt Romney lost 2012, and long for what never was. Where they utterly, utterly lose me is thinking that voting anyone but Trump in 2020 is the principled, rational choice, and that sabotaging and undermining all the good he is doing for the economy and foreign relations is at all sane. But they do.
God bless the rural conservative Utahns who love Trump, they will save the Wasatch Front GOPers from themselves.
