My first impression about this painting is that it is pleasant. It isn't dramatic or powerful, just a nice scene done with huge skill. The model is lovely. The color scheme is distinct without being glaring.
Looking at this work and some of Jose Ferraz de Almeida Junior's other paintings, there is a photograph quality about them. It's not a photo realistic aspect so much as a snapshot quality. Also, although not in this scene, a number of his paintings show a real sense of humor. Posted by: JTB at October 31, 2019 09:45 AM (bmdz3) Posted by: Muldoon at October 31, 2019 09:45 AM (mvenn) 57

Candy cigarettes . . . when I was a kid, there were two kinds: the white chewy ones with the pink-painted tips, and the gold standard, the chocolates. Each chocolate tube came in a white paper sleeve, so they *looked* like real cigarettes. I think at least one brand had the Camel logo on the box. Those were good.
Didn't encourage me to start smoking, Camels or any other brand. But to this day, when I hear about cigarettes, especially if someone in a prison camp is using them as money, I think of the chocolate ones. Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at October 31, 2019 10:02 AM (ClOmq) 150

The idea that anything said on that call was inappropriate or rises to the level of removal is ludicrous. Here is the sum total of what was said on the call regarding the Biden's.... "The other thing, There's a lot talk about Biden's son, that Eiden stopped the prosecution and a lot of people want to find out about that so whatever you can do with the Attorney General would be great. Biden went around bragging that he stopped the prosecution so if you can look into it... It sounds horrible to me." He asked him to look into the circumstances of the firing of the prosecutor and to work with the US Attorney General. There is literally nothing remarkable or illicit about what Trump was asking. This is all preposterous. I really wish the Republicans were a better political party, because this nonsense is become frustrating. Texas I-20 is always interesting - default is bumper to bumper, pedal to the metal, feels like Days of Thunder with everyone drafting - until you get to the wreck, and then it takes forever to get around. Seems like every other time I head to Dallas, i'll see the SUV laying on its side with everyone having to detour around it. Once it was a black suburban on it's ROOF laying right in the middle of the interstate. Thought "now I'll bet that was a wild ride!" Saw an honest to god ferrari once where the idiot had spun out in the middle of heavy traffic, and there were pieces of it up and down the road for 200 yards. Well, that's Texas driving, as much as I see of it.

The other problem with Gnaw-luns traffic is not primarily with the drivers, or the bad road surfaces. The city apparently disbelieves in left turns. The vast majority of intersections here have "NO LEFT TURN" plastered on them, and you have to drive through the light, U-turn (sometimes most of a block away), and come back to turn right at your original intersection. No wonder nothing moves.

++++++++++++++ We see more of this in Denver, too, though not as extreme - also due (I think) to the huge in-migration the past several years. When there's no dominant driving culture anymore, it descends into madness because the lowest common denominator (e.g., the rudest average group) dominates behavior. Everyone knows the paper rules but no one knows the practical rules because practical rules don't exist anymore due to dilution, and everything normalizes to madness. The damndest thing I ever saw on the road was when I was a courier driver in L. A.. I was inbound on the San Bernardino Fwy about ten miles out of Downtown when, for whatever reason, I happened to look to my left. There, in the bus lane, was a car, going backwards. At 60 mph. As it was slowing, I checked it in my side view mirror. It completed a 360 degree spin and apparently came to a stop. How the driver managed to get the car to do a 360 spin around center mass, and stay in the lane, is something that has always mystified me.

I'll admit to bending some driving rules or guidelines, from time to time. Like every afternoon. The ramp where I get on the Miss. River Bridge swoops up, after a last light, from the right lane in a two-lane avenue. If I sat politely in that right lane, it'd take me another 1/2 hour to get home. I zoom down to the last 10 cars or so and blink-and-edge my way into the right lane.

This is a very interesting article. It is talk of minutes with a priest, Fr. Lampert about exorcisms, for those of you who aren't at work or have a hour to spare during lunch. There is also a written bit but not nearly as interesting as the talk. The priest was speaking to college students at Seton Hall University:

Oooh ooh, when I was at CVS yesterday I saw a Hasbro robotic companion cat for sale ("looks and acts like a real cat!"). I guess that means it ignores you and leaves batteries for you to step on at 2:00 a.m.
