56 I find portraits from this era difficult. The artists really didn't have a lot to work with. Facial expression was declasse and portraiture was merely documentation. Keep it interesting had to have been tough for the artist. This one does have a variety of textures, but there is little color or tone variation, and the lighting is kinda drab.

91 This painting is remarkable, especially for the time. van der Weyden painted in the first half of the 1400s. I find many portraits from that period to be rather stiff. The young woman in this work is lively, close to realistic. And her direct gaze adds to that aspect. No doubt this is my imagination, but she appears to be about to smile or laugh. The whole approach is pleasing and effective.

Looking at some of Rogier van der Weyden's other paintings with their use of brilliant color and technical accuracy, this is a plain, almost unadorned, work. The simple dark background with the muted earth tones of brown and off white clothing is calming. He even captures the weave of the material. The woman's skin tones are wonderful and stand out from the earth colors. Then right near the center of the image are her blue eyes, making their impact greater. I'm impressed.

And yes, I appreciate her boobs.

Posted by: JTB at October 21, 2019 09:51 AM (bmdz3)

92 Elizabet. I think her name should be Elizabet or Elizabetta. Her friends called her Betty. She married a merchant and had 12 children. Half of them survived childhood and gave her dozens of grandkids to spoil. Yep. I'm giving this lady a nice life. She deserves it.

A discussion I've had with many over the years; prior to about 1920, virtually all cultures and religions (especially ours) accepted this as a simple fact. Faith was not the path to free you from suffering, faith was the path to give you the strength and courage and meaning to fight through the suffering that is an inevitable part of living in this world. Everyone at all levels accepted this, as it had always been true.

About 1920, by my estimation, a new culture began to set in which was Happy Happy Joy Joy, which held that the only point in life was constant entertainment, and saw no point in life other than that. It took 2 or 3 generations for that to go from a fringe to being the dominant strain in American life, but here we are.

200 A discussion I've had with many over the years; prior to about 1920, virtually all cultures and religions (especially ours) accepted this as a simple fact. Faith was not the path to free you from suffering, faith was the path to give you the strength and courage and meaning to fight through the suffering that is an inevitable part of living in this world. Everyone at all levels accepted this, as it had always been true.

I dunno. Maybe. It seems more oriented to making you live a drab, controlled, repressed life to cultivate dependency, conformity, and ease of control.

It's really hard to tell in this type of art. Portraiture, while being about likeness, is also about projecting a desired look. There's propaganda involved. Warts, scars, deformities, were downplayed or eliminated all together. These paintings were used for many things, including showing off to potential suitors. There's a famous portrait of Duke of Urbino that only shows him in strict profile. He had lost an eye and part of his nose in an accident and would only be pictured from his "good" side.

"The media" is such a fractured thing at this point, that I think it needs to be defined in these poll questions.

Who are the respondents thinking of? Are conservatives thinking of the New York Times or Fox News? What about liberals? What about moderates?

Twenty years ago, when the media was much more homogenized, this question, as it is asked, held some worth in its responses. Now? Less so.

Yeah. Forgot about that one. In the ancient times it came from the shell of a particular shell fish not native to the Mediterranean. Only the super rich could afford it, and later it was reserved for the Caesars only -- on pain of death in some eras. I don't know if that was still the origin of the hue by the Renaissance, but I don't recall seeing a lot of purple in this art. Not even in depictions of Jesus. It's almost always a rich, royal blue.

The purple appears more in Byzantine art.

Yeah. And once the association between color and rank became codified, anything purple was for imperial use. Porphyry was used many times for personal imperial use. Constantine had a porphyry sarcophagus made for a member of his family. You can still see a copy of it in the Church of St. Costanza in Rome. Another famous work in porphyry is The Four Tetrarchs in Venice, supposed to be of Diocletian and his co-rulers.

Dude is a control freak.

I saw a talk from the woman who was his visual effects producer on Titanic.

They were in the sound mix booth and the sound guys brought in their sounds for the helicopter. He stopped them as it was playing and said, "You captured this sound over land, didn't you?"

"Yes."

"You have to go capture it over water."

The sound guys looked over to the woman and asked, "Can he tell the difference in sound between salt and fresh water?"

The Democrats couldn't have better players enlisted to destroy their party in the eyes of most Americans. There isn't much difference though, between Clinton and Romney, both are losers who cannot get over being rejected by the populace. Romney managed to use his religious affiliation to run to a state that would elect him based on that affiliation, so he can try to work out his rejection issues by posing as an interested Senator. Clinton has no such pocket of groupies and she wasn't going to go back to being a lowly junior Senator from New York. She has no where to go to try to effect anything and so she sits and mutters and when someone finally gives her a microphone, she babbles BS nonsense like this.
