A naked woman had to be rescued after she scaled a roof and straddled a statue on top of a cathedral building in Fort Worth, Texas. An armed man who broke into an Apple store in Dallas was shot dead by a security guard early Tuesday morning. Around 2:30 a.m. Oct. 8, the suspect attempted to break in to the Apple store on the 3100 block of Knox Street near McKinney Avenue. The suspect attempted to disarm the security guard — a retired Dallas police officer — but was unsuccessful. Did they find that? I seriously doubt the really It took the Surgeon General to say it about smoking and it was as official as it gets. They said the same about dip in the 80s but that was based on a hysteria about one poor kid and Congress mandated it. Even today, check any chew or dip, no surgeon general warning. The reason is they can't prove it and they have been doing that for almost 40 years.
Not doubt vape is no good for you like dip and booze and fried foods. But I doubt they proved it causes cancer. No one has linked nicotine to cancer. Same reason no one says nicorette causes cancer. People are really mixed up about nicotine,. One causes addiction and the other crap like tar cause cancer, Take away the tar then figure out what the problem is.
I don't recommend using any of this stuff. It is all unhealthy and a huge waste of money. But the vaping hysteria is really odd to me. Sure, kids should not do it But they only count how many are doing it and they are not counting how many are not smoking as a result. It is almost like smoking is near extinct among the young and now you have to bring it back. Bad knee jerk policy. If it really is carcinogenic, let the people know for sure. But don't lie to them and try to sell magazines based on hysteria.

Atlanta has two teams headed for the playoffs. I am dubious. Portland soccer games are about as white as the Nuremberg Rallies - given that it's Atlanta, maybe there are a few more black fans, but SIs description is perhaps overdone.
I watched a video of the fans at an Atlanta match, and saw a couple of black people and one Asian among the couple of hundred fans visible.
No matter - it is a clash of Good against Evil, and woke Sports Illustrated is there to write lengthy articles on it.

Yeah, MisHum blew the surprise. I tasted myself a fucking Popeye's Spicy Chicken sandwich, *and* a mild sandwich to boot. They FINALLY got it back out and available again!
But here's the kicker... the journalist I work with in my office, Brady, asked me to write a review of it. I've already done so and my piece should run in the Westminster Herald-Journal on October 17. (Spoiler alert: yeah I liked it, especially the spicy one. It was like there was a party in my mouth and everyone was invited!)
Next, Brady wants me to do a blind taste test of the original Whopper versus the new Impossible Whopper. I'm not as excited about that but for another article, why not... :-)

And if they can truly prove it is horrible, let it be known. The E.U. Banned dip in the 80s over hysteria, it is illegal there though their citizens smoke like chimneys. In Sweden, they have low smoking rates and a high level of snus use. They also have the lowest cancer rates in Europe. But the E.U. will not change the law although they know they are banning a substance proven to be safer. Their argument is "why add one more bad thing". Good call. Ban something proven by the top doctors in the world to be safer because you don't want to add something else.
it is all bad, i think I have been clear on that. But governments can be so arbitrary and conniving it is shameful. This should be about helping people and telling the truth as you know it.

Same thing on the offramp near my store. Smokes, big cup of Tim Hortons coffee, tats. The awesome thing is they all live together in a house you can see from the ramp. They work two-hour shifts, then get government assistance out the ass because they have no reported income.
I did some math with my kids and we figure they average a toonie every second light change. It works out to $40-60 an hour.

I am up there all the time. Cabin near Finland MN. Too bad we get Cidiots up here too much. Castle Danger etc. are very pretty. People don't realize we even have terrain like that up here. The goal is to convert out log cabin into our full time retirement home, but that's a long way off. Kids to get through college etc.

Quick MIL Update: She was conscious today and they took her off the vent. Still in a lot of pain (two broken ankles and a broken wrist will do that to you). But the lung is re-inflated and the aortic sleeve seems to be holding. Still a long road ahead of her.
Her SO is still in very bad shape - has had two heart attacks in the hospital since Sunday night, they put in a pacemaker last night and hope for the best. Still lots of other injuries and broken things to deal with, but have to get his BP, etc under control first.
Prayer for both Marilyn and Tom appreciated.

i never recommend stocks but this QSR is worth mentioning. The stock has gone up over the last two months but Popeye's is only a small part of their company. There is no pure play here. QSR is mostly Tim Hortons and then Burger King. If you want to make an impossible burger and chicken sandwich play go for it, but not on my blessing. It is also a kind of weird company. They themselves talk about how little control they have over the three independent companies in their portfolio. I don't totally understand why that it but it is something they make a point of.

I think our know-nothing press confuses body armor with a tactical vest. I've read a lot of stories in the past year where perps are shot dead while wearing body armor. Given that LEOs are taught to shoot center mass, and have questionable skills in many cases anyways, it seems unlikely that these kills are
all head shots.
At any rate, if the police spokesperson says it was body armor, the press will dutifully report it as such, but I have my doubts.

qdp - I live less than a mile from Atherton. I think it is the wealthiest city, but not sure. TFG and Hilldebeast both had multiple fundraisers there. I've inspected a few of the larger homes in Atherton and suffice it to say their carbon footprints are a wee bit larger than yours or mine.
That being said, I don't know if most of Atherton is affected by the blackouts. That mostly affects Woodside, which is pretty much just across the street from me, up in the hills to the west. (Atherton is to the south).

Meanwhile, Instapundit has a link to a Twitchy article about a former Blizzard lead who's had enough of the company. Mark Kern (who's ethnic Chinese, and has lived in both Taiwan and Hong Kong) posted a lengthy thread on Twitter that focused on Blizzard's actions, and also talked about how China has apparently been buying its way into the video game market (he claims to have been removed from his own company because he turned down what was essentially a $2,000,000 bribe that would have required him to let a Chinese company exert influence on the way his own company developed its games).
At the end of his tweet thread, he mentions Epic exclusivity. For those who pay attention to video games but are unaware of what that refers to - Epic is a long-time video-game developer. Recently, they've been attempting to gain dominance in the digital distribution market for video games, competing largely with Steam (and Origin and GoG to a lesser extent). The way that Epic has done this is by paying money to game publishers for exclusive rights (for one year, which is when the sales are by far the most lucrative) to distribute their high-profile new games... frequently after the games have already heavily advertised on the current king of the market, Steam. Steam has recently responded to this by changing the wording of its legal agreement so that anyone who markets their game on Steam is prohibited (with penalties) from signing an exclusivity deal with another digital distribution platform.
Why does this matter? It matters because Epic is owned by a Chinese company named TenCent. So this very blatant and hostile market grab by Epic is essentially a way to give the Chinese the dominant distribution platform for PC games. And since the dominant platform gets a lot of eyeballs, having that position would allow the PRC some influence in what sorts of games are published.
Epic is probably best known currently as the developer of a popular game called Fortnite.
Kern also briefly mentioned his current project - an MMO called em8er. He didn't mention what it was about in his tweet thread, but a quick search revealed that it's going to be a Kaiju versus Mecha game. I figure that with a subject like that, it's at least worth a look when it gets to a later point in its development...

That makes sense, since the father of the pill, Carl Djerassi, was a local dude (Stanford). Djerassi Ranch is in the Woodside hills. Don't know much about it other than it has a resident artist program, and you can see some sculptures on the ranch from I-280.

Maybe a big rant on the TRIPEL AAYAAYYAYAY industry generally. I dunno. Ace is better at this sh!t than I am, obviously, which is why I just comment here.
The developers of Everspace, which was quite a good indie game, have a kickstarter to do a sequel. They've already promised not to go the Epic route. Too many indie devs have taken our money and then sold the game through Epic, thus screwing over Steam and GOG buyers, which is most of us.

Damn, I saw an item on Insty this weekend, linking to a pic of Doc taking off from Miramar after the Miramar Air Show. I happened to be down in Vista (San Diego North County) with Average Wife last week, visiting her parents. If I had known, I would have taken my FIL to see Doc. He has Alzheimers, but his memories of service on a KB-29 during the Korean War are undiminished. I'm going to be keeping an eye on Doc's and Fifi's schedules; hopefully one of them will make it to the San Diego area while FIL still has his memories...

Okay, it's past 250 comments so I'll share my news.
Yeah, MisHum blew the surprise. I tasted myself a fucking Popeye's
Spicy Chicken sandwich, *and* a mild sandwich to boot. They FINALLY got
it back out and available again!
But here's the kicker... the journalist I work with in my office,
Brady, asked me to write a review of it. I've already done so and my
piece should run in the Westminster Herald-Journal on October 17.
(Spoiler alert: yeah I liked it, especially the spicy one. It was like
there was a party in my mouth and everyone was invited!)
Next, Brady wants me to do a blind taste test of the original
Whopper versus the new Impossible Whopper. I'm not as excited about that

What an awesome opportunity to see all that.
The DC-7 here at my airport attempted to leave for the Delta museum in ATL and promptly blew #3 in a giant smoky mess. Grenaded it. The R-3350 in all variants were cranky and the B-29 was rushed into service with them and all sorts of overheating issues. ie Blow up.
The Best 3350 operators were Neptune Aviation of Missoula on Fire Tankers. They operated them since the 50's. Way longer than the military did and only with 100LL Octane gas, not 115/145 and the increased Manififold pressures attendant.

Not as bad as a B25. My Gramps flew 29's but knew a guy who was flying a 25 for the confederate air force at air shows in the early 80's. He gave us a ride. One of the best memories I will ever have, I was 11 or 12 maybe. Rode in the nose gunner spot for most of it. Louder that shit, didn't care! It was a dream.

The TU-4 was an exact copy of the B-29, reverse engineering a couple of B-29's that crashed in the Soviet Far East during the war.
The TU-95 "Bear" is the ultimate development of turboprop technology - it has incredible range, and it is incredibly noisy. Bear crews tend to suffer permanent hearing loss.
Amusingly, even though "Bear" is the NATO codename for the plane, the Russians have picked up on it too, and call it the "Medved" (Bear).

They reverse-engineered every system on the plane. Remote turrets, fire control systems, the latest in Norden bombsights.
And most significantly, the Boeing cabin pressurization regulator system.
That alone moved their high-altitude development, quite literally "into the jet age".
Conversely, it's said that when Japan ordered her engineers to reverse-engineer the B-29 from crashed artifacts, that they reported back to their superiors, that the science and engineering was years ahead of the best that Japan had to offer.
Meaning, they knew how it worked, but had no idea of how to make the parts, and make them work as a whole.
The Russian tale is in a lot of the literature. I'd need Anna Puma to chase down the veracity of the Japanese legend.

One of the stories that is told of their reverse engineering efforts relates to their desire to exactly copy every bit of Boeing's war winner. One of the interred B-29s, fuzzy here, had a natural metal crew tunnel over the bomb bays where the other two were still painted green there. So the Soviets compromised and only painted half the tunnel green in their copies.

I think the Bear was more recent.
But one of them was. Three B-29s landed in the USSR, and were interned there (the Soviet Union wasn't at war with Japan yet). The Soviets didn't have anything like the Superfortress (they didn't even really have a heavy bomber), so they put together a program to copy the design. And they did that, right down to the armor patch that one of the bombers had in place.
It was a pretty note worthy endeavor, particularly since the bombers apparently used parts measured in inches and feet, and the pre-existing Soviet factory tools were all designed to work in metric. They apparently had to make a completely new set of tools using English measurements to get the work done.

Similar issues when White Sands was retro-engineering the V-2. Even with von Braun et al they had troubles. One of them was that the German stuff was metric and the tools they had were inch.

I'm guessing that machining the parts was one of the big problems. I've read up on Romania in World War 2. And the engineers there had a lot of good ideas that would have boosted Romania's armed forces quite a bit during the war. The problem was that the ideas in question required modern (at the time) equipment. And to get that equipment, they needed certain machined tools. And those machined tools had to be crafted by slightly lower quality machined tools, that had to be crafted by slightly lower quality machined tools, etc...
Romania, being largely a peasant country up through that time, just didn't have the industrial base to even *start* doing that sort of stuff. When they were able to get the necessary equipment before the war broke out, they made a good-quality fighter. But after the start of the war, when components became hard to get, they couldn't get the precision parts they needed, and quickly fell behind everyone else.

I'm pretty sure there was at least one actual case. A toddler got hold of one of those sets of rare earth magnets sold as toys and swallowed a bunch of them.
Two got on opposite sides of a loop of intestine and pinched the loop together so hard that it went gangrenous in the spot pinched between the magnets. I don't think the kid actually died, but it was pretty serious nonetheless.

A station on the Dalton Highway hit 0 F the other day. First zero reading of the winter, but sadly will not be the last.
8 inches of snow on the ground north of Talkeetna. Here in Los Anchorage, we've just had a couple of hard frosts (enough to kill grass and plants) but no real cold weather or snow yet.
This is the time of year when those of us who live in the northlands start to question that decision.

I understand you and I don't take any of this lightly. I have long advocated pulling out of places that don't want us and threaten us. But the Kurds are a special case. They have been allies for decades now. I am saying lets do our best. In fact, and I won't speak for anyone, but i bet a lot of spec op types would volunteer to fight with the Kurds.
I don't want any more Americans to die in the ME period. But there has to be a way to defend at least the Kurds in iraq. There has to be a way. We defend islands all over the world without a thought. No one is going to take St. Barts or Fiji. .I am not trying to be funny here. I am saying there are deals that can be made. Turkey has a lot more to lose from us than we have to lose from them. That is Trump talk and real talk.

a lot of people are bitter right now. We support the president and hope he makes the right plays here. We are arguing because there is a divide. But it is not the truth to say it is America first vs continual war. i always try to be fair and i think people see that. No way I am trying to be unfair here. I say screw the left and the MSM gadflys trying to make the kurds into an issue. They don't care about the Kurds. They just want hits on a daily basis.

CD Projekt Red owns Good Old Games (or GoG). But they've never been exclusive about any of the stuff on their platform, including their own games.

EA doesn't use Epic. Origin pre-dates Epic's platform, and is EA's wholly-owned digital platform. It's been quite a while since EA released a PC title on any other digital platform.
Basically, if you want an EA title via digital and on a PC, then you use Origin. And no one else uses Origin.
Personally, I don't really mind that. If EA wants to do it that way, that's their business. They miss out on the extra visibility that they'd get by having their titles on Steam or GoG. Microsoft arguably does something similar, since many of their titles (such as Forza) are only available via the Microsoft Store. The only company that I really have an issue with is Epic, and that's due to Epic's habit of grabbing titles that have already been advertising on other platforms, and then turning them into Epic exclusives.

two things before I go and you probably know the first. Floyd the Barber had some type of disability a season or two into the show. That is why you always see him sitting in the later seasons
The second one always gets me. Frances Bavier, the lady who played Aunt Been moved to Siler City NC and spent the rest of her life there after the show. This woman was from Manhattan but chose to move to the same part of NC. I believe they mentioned Siler City a few times on the show. It is pretty obvious this show was shot in hollywood. For someone to be so taken with a state as to move there because of a show is pretty cool to me.

yeah, ok, odd is fair. I doubt the guys from WKRP moved to Cincinnati. I love NC so I get it but yes it is odd. I guess she never married but will have to check on that. I really like Eastern NC and get the pull. But yeah, it was a bit odd all around. But giving up Hollywood for what she portrayed is pretty cool. So many actors say one thing in films and live another way. Yet people take those film comments as Gospel. Anyway, it is interesting trivia. I guess she was a bit of a shut in in the end. That is sad for sure.

Dude, I had a spicy chicken sandwich for dinner. Made the damn thing myself. 1/2 chicken breast butterflied, dredged in my spice grindered blend of all sorts of seeds (coriander, cumin, etc.), with powdered paprika, chili powder garlic, onion and ginger mixed in. Cooked in a frying pan with butter and Worcestershire sauce. On a toasted roll with cheese and b-b-q sauce. Easy peasy. And I didn't have to hunt for the damn thing, either.

good, don't do it The bean counters keep statistics and they like to mention how many have died tipping over a vending machine. You can look it ;up i guess. But to me it is the image of having to rock back and forth, you can't to it in one try. But again, don't try it! It was just an image lol.

Sure. When you tip over a vending machine, it will most likely break, especially if it has a glass front. So you'll get free soda and/or food from tipping over a vending machine. You can't get cans of soda from tipping over a cow.

AS everyone says impeachment is a purely political action. If the Repubs stay firm in the Senate, Trump can not be removed. But you have to rely on politicians to never go wobbly. And for that, the Repub message has to at least mitigate the Dems. The Dems have all of media, academia, and Hollyweird on their side. We have to respond with some info on the R side. Again, he simply can not be removed if R's don't go wobbly ANd yeah, like the article said, the Dems don't even want a real vote on this. I hope the author is right and impeachment will ruin the Dems.

Had to cancel wound clinic Tues 'cause she was too weak. Collapsed while washing face at sink. Got her into local cancer center and they gave her pain med, fluids and vitamins through her port.
Yesterday went to STL for Dr and chemo appt. Canceled chemo but sent us to clinic. She got pain med, fluids and 2 units of blood. It was a long ass day.

I wonder if the Utah Utes realize what they have done. They have done nothing to help Utah. They have only brought scorn and bewilderment upon the state. We all know Utah is conservative. They could have picked anyone out of a hat and he would have done better by the state. What did electing Mittens accomplish? He telegraphed that he was going to be against the administration. But Utah made a big mistake. Fat chance a utah rep gets a national nod anytime soon. Again good state, bad rep they chose.

But once the Senate gets the indictment (impeachment), then the Republican senators get to subpoena everyone under the fucking sun, including That Fucking Guy, to testify under oath. Once that testimony is given, any asshole RINO who still votes for conviction based upon the obviously bullshit impeachment should eat a bag of dicks live on CNN. Even Brennan is starting his 'walk-back' because he fears testifying under oath because of the lies he already promulgated while not under oath.
Impeachment by the House Dems would be a prime example of 'The Rule of Unintended Consequences'.

i wont touch that as i really don't know enough about it. Hell, i know nothing about it but I don't deny it exists. What i don't get is what they think Romney could do. Is he advancing utah interests? Maybe he is and I just don't get it. But there have to be other UTES who are conservative and don't make their life goal to take down their own president. Why not send a young Orrin Hatch type? Like I said, I really now nothing of the inner workings here. No doubt Mitt was given the job for whatever reason. I thought it was name recognition but I don't know the details. I still say it hurts the state with R's.

I know that in this area, we have a huge opportunity educate and change folks minds.
Had another conversation yesterday with another neighbor from two streets over.
He felt that he was the ONLY one who felt the same way that the rest of us do here.
Because one thing that conservatives in general really suck at is outreach on a personal level.
We want to see a rally with thousands in attendance.
Almost like an old time revival.

I know a German doctor who told me if he knew what he was getting into he would have bailed young. He told me that national insurance means you are only reimbursed a certain amount-- eat you the rest. Some make up the margin with volume, hence here you end up with a plathora of patients running a guanltet of needless appointments, fraudulent claims from doctors, doctors unwilling to prescribe anything (unless you clearly state you will pay out of pocket), etc..
Talented European doctors leave. There is no incentive to take on more patients and "help" sick people as there is no gain for taking on more risk and headaches.
But hey. We got social insurance. G-d help you if you actually needed serious medical help.

The problem with that is it would be crappy insurance just like my retired Tricare. No Doctor within 65 miles of me will take it as Primary Insurance because the reimbursements are so low and the wait for reimbursements is so long.
Anything they gave us would basically be at Medicaid levels. Good luck finding anyone who would accept that kind of insurance.
