Steve Hayes and Jonah Goldberg -- "Two of the Biggest Names in Conservative Journalism!" --
🚢 🚢 🚢
Launch Their Newsletter, With Surprise Guest
🚢 🚢 🚢

I give it thirteen months. The liberal donors will stop subsdizing it shortly after the 2020 election.

Two of the biggest names in conservative journalism -- Steve Hayes, formerly of the now-defunct Weekly Standard, and Jonah Goldberg, a longtime National Review star -- will launch The Dispatch, a digital media company, on Tuesday.

Why it matters: The Dispatch, citing "worrisome" trends in journalism on the right, is plunging into a tough space --conservative, but not a booster of President Trump. "The conservative movement was not intended to be a handmaiden to a single political party," the co-founders say in a letter to readers.

So... there will be some boosting of the Democrat Party?

The website will go live today, the first in a string of newsletters begins tomorrow, and Goldberg has begun the first podcast, The Remnant.

...

The co-founders raised roughly $6 million from a few dozen investors.

Gee I wonder if I can name every single one of them off the top of my head.

Now, this sentence means what I think it does, right?

Hayes and Goldberg -- along with their senior editor, former National Review senior editor David French -- are longtime critics of Trump.

That's not as clear as I'd like, but it does seem to me that they managed to somehow lure David French away from the National Review, which he was destroying with his pro-Democrat bias and where he was getting absolutely hammered in the comments day-in, day-out.

🚢 🚢 🚢

Yup, French has surrendered:

A friend calls it "The Great Cvcksolidation."

Wow, David French went from having a prominent perch at the longest-lived conservative opinion journal to being an editor at a... newsletter, and an expansion-team newsletter at that.

That's some promotion.

So, their new hire -- former Slate editor Rachel Larimore, who then worked at The Bulwark -- embraces their image as a promoter of Drag Queen Story Hour by posting a meme of a drag queen vogue-ing.

So much conservatism.

As long as David French could stop writing at NR, that'd be nice.

I like NR more than most, but French's presence is the single largest drag on the entire masthead. He's a joke, and I have a feeling that Lowry was looking for ways to get out of some kind of contract with French.

Complete ignoring. Its a non entity, with no power, influence, or significance. They're meaningless, its no more important than if I and two of my buddies Dave and Tom made a newsletter at home and mimeographed it to hand out door to door.

Pay them no heed. They will be relying on outraged responses to clickbait nonsense for any publicity or response at all. If you, ace, and the rest of the commentariat just blow them off, it will wither away and come to nothing. Their only hope for any continued future is being noticed.

132 "The Remnant" is very powerful imagery well known to both Jewish believers and Evangelical Christians. It is used several times in Biblical prophecy, most notably in Isaiah Chapter 10:

The Remnant of Israel

20 In that day the remnant of Israel,
the survivors of Jacob,
will no longer rely on him
who struck them down
but will truly rely on the Lord,
the Holy One of Israel.
21 A remnant will return, a remnant of Jacob
will return to the Mighty God.
22 Though your people be like the sand by the sea, Israel,
only a remnant will return.
Destruction has been decreed,
overwhelming and righteous.
23 The Lord, the Lord Almighty, will carry out
the destruction decreed upon the whole land.

-----

This is one of my key reasons for wanting Trump to get reelected. Don't get me wrong: I love the guy, I love what he's doing, and I want him to continue being President on his merits.

But his reelection would be the Cuckopalypse. Their entire reason for existence was to keep the Deplorables on the Uniparty plantation, and they failed. Now their purpose is to herd us back inside in the gates. Once they fail at that, they will have no use, and will be dispensed with.

As of next November they'll be congregating beneath Beltway overpasses, sipping Cisco from brandy-glasses, lecturing each other about the Importance of Civility in Our Divided America, and devising their next Exciting New Venture Grift.

The one that will let them finally afford pants.

*NOTE* The Dispatch, according to my email from Hayes this morning, expects to fund itself through paid subscription starting in 1Q2020. This is impossible. It will never happen. French, Goldberg, and Hayes will be closing up shop in December of next year. Book it.

=========

That right there is why the entire Never Trump movement is a complete joke.

Their height of power was in 2016, and it was pitiful then.

They had Evan McMuffin who had the relatively modest goal of spoiling Utah in the hopes of somehow getting the presidential election to the House. He ended up 3rd.

Known Trump's in 2020 not going to be less popular with Republicans and conservatives than he was as Unknown Entity Trump in 2016.

If Goldberg and Hayes honestly think they have the influential reach to actually effect the outcome of the election, their delusion madmen. If they know they don't, then they're without morals and total grifters.

I'm leaning towards the latter.

That argument is shot since Trump has pushed for more conservative things than any president since Reagan. You can talk a lot about Trump in some not-nice ways - his simple, blunt language, his lack of polish, his rash public exclamations, the sometimes counterproductive fights he picks, his fairly poor (particularly early on) performance with regard to picking subordinates, etc. There's plenty of meat on that bone.

But stupid? By what measure, and with what evidence? The man is *clearly* not stupid. You can't get where he's gotten in real life or in his recent political life if you're stupid.

This is just yet another manifestation of that great Trump meme with a picture of him facing the camera in black-and-white, captioned with "I am not their target. YOU are their target. I am just in the way." These people can gargle my nards.

I would like to wish the two notable conservative thinkers, Jonah Goldberg and Stephen Hayes well on their new venture, The Dispatch. I have enjoyed reading the thoughts and opinions of these two esteemed conservative intellectuals and The Dispatch will help fill a void that has existed since conservative thought and opinion has been less about true American conservatism and more about partisan cheer leading.
I am also pleased to announce that I have been invited to participate by submitting the occasional op-ed to this exciting new venture.

Yeah and it was a pretty strong case; not only in the past, but during the election he was making some pretty non conservative positions. I still live in the fear that he'll revert to type if reelected, but its not a very strong fear. It was an easy argument to make: he supported both Obama and Hillary in the past. He pushed for government healthcare. He used to be pro-abortion until very recently.

But now, there's just nothing to that argument and all they have left is "ew he's icky"

To conserve is to take action to protect or renew. Maybe it is the fracker or drillers in Texas. Or the Vet that starts a new franchise. It is the acts of economic freedom and personal liberty that work to conserve the republic.

380 Is there a name for the phenomenon that is: any time one comments/tweets about someone's spelling error they inevitably make a spelling error within their critique?

I do not understand why people criticize spelling unless its a continuous, stupid thing. Its too easy to make mistakes typing (especially on a tiny phone keyboard) and we all do it. Its like criticizing someone for tripping or spilling a drink.

503 Guys,

Re: Liberal Fascism

The writers at the Claremont Review essentially claimed that Goldberg cribbed his thesis from their writings, but then did not acknowledge them:

A review in the Claremont Review of Books said:

Goldberg is certainly right when he says that most academics have willfully ignored modern liberalism's progressive-fascist roots, although scholars such as James Ceaser, John Marini, and others (including me) have in fact been calling attention to the progressive origins of modern liberalism for the past 20 years. Liberal Fascism clearly draws from these works but makes surprisingly little reference to them, even in a few instances when the book's observations sound awfully familiar. Yet if Goldberg proceeds, in some respects, down a path blazed by others, he does so with the kind of terrific writing and energy that is certain to make the connection between modern liberalism and its statist ancestors a more prominent factor in America's political battles and debates.[31]

...

I hear there's a backstory here, too, and that they would have been more forceful in accusing him of plagiarism had they not worked out a back-room agreement -- Goldberg would write a later article noting how important Claremont was to this thesis, and Claremont would refrain from saying "plagiarism" more clearly.

It's going to be funny to watch as businesses try to get generators in to maintain power, but the local and state governments will nix that because of zoning and permitting issues.

They do NOT like those big diesel generators, and it's almost impossible to legally install new generators in CA urban areas anymore, without violating the law.

I had a long talk with a PGE exec a while back and he shared some private concerns the company has. They're barely able to sustain the demands of people right now, it was in the context of electric cars. He said at night when everyone turns on their lights, the system goes into the red, groaning with the drain and barely able to keep up.

They need to build more power plants, like three or four. But everyone always votes against it.

I'm not shocked at her power - she and Bill have spent 2+ decades using the money they get (foundation, PACS) on buying loyalty. They have people because people owe them their careers. For example, they used their foundation to host VIP seminars in which lucky media people were moderators, thus boosting their careers/network. Do that enough and those media people will not want to report negatively about you.

However, that power doesn't mean she can get elected. 2016 proved that. She's only gotten less likable, less healthy, less emotionally sound since then.

But when your previously left-leaning political vehicle is being dragged (kicking and screaming) back over the center and actually (gasp) toward the right? Yeah, that's weapons-grade nonsense right there.

Google HQ no, SF no. Any datacenter worth what it pays its ops management has been testing their backup power sources.

713 I'm always shocked at how powerful she is in the party.

I think it's foolish to think she's lost that power. She may have the institutional muscle to make it happen.
- - - -
I'm not shocked at her power - she and Bill have spent 2+ decades using the money they get (foundation, PACS) on buying loyalty.
