Hey Big Government, Here's A Novel idea: Mind Your Own Damned Business

Try fixing the potholes and the porous borders and try to get a handle on your out-of-control spending and the obscene lawlessness among your law enforcement agencies. When you are done with that there is a long list of other significant issues that need to be addressed. And then maybe you get to worry about what private citizens do to themselves.

But what is most frustrating about the current brouhaha about vaping and e-cigarettes is the focus of the discussion on whether they are harmful or beneficial. That's not the point! The issue is clear; does the government get to control our private activities and behavior?

I think cigarette smoking is dumb, so I don't do it. I have no interest in vaping, so I don't do it. But if you want to do it? Have at it! As long as you are responsible for the consequences of your behavior, why is it my or the government's business?

The fact that these behaviors are far less destructive than cigarette smoking and can assist people in quitting smoking is nice...really nice! But once again, as long as there is no deleterious effect on society, why should we care? Sure, you can argue that the health effects cost us money, but that is what health insurance is for. Charge more for smokers and vapers (even though the data are sparse) if you feel like it.

Setting the Record Straight on Vaping

There’s a lot to unpack from this recent piece in The Federalist written by my friend and former White House advisor, Katy Talento, which endorses government plans to limit access to e-cigarette devices and flavors. I’ll take her main arguments — which are the ones most commonly made to support vaping bans — one at a time.

Vaping Is Just as Bad as Smoking

Katy belittles the idea that vaping is a public health win. Yet harm reduction is a valid goal, and vaping has helped millions quit traditional, combustible cigarettes. This is in part because vaping allows people to continue to mimic the physical act of smoking (which is particularly important to women) but with a device that delivers the nicotine in a safer, non-carcinogenic way.

Don’t take my word for it. Consider the positions of Public Health England, the Royal College of Physicians, and Cancer Research U.K., all of which endorse e-cigarettes as an effective smoking cessation tool. A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine confirms the efficacy of these devices, finding that smokers who used e-cigarettes were twice as likely as those who used other smoking cessation tools to successfully quit smoking. And these public health organizations estimate that vaping is 95 percent less harmful than smoking. Even the FDA admits that vaping is safer than traditional smoking.

That's all great, and it exposes the Left's mania about control of every facet of our lives, except of course killing babies. But conspicuous in its absence is a substantive discussion of free will, of freedom from interference by the government, of liberty to make our own decisions.

Oh...the article is from The National Review, and it is a morass of statist, big-government love. That the author stumbled onto the correct conclusion seems to be coincidence. I wonder what William F. Buckley would have said?

Believe it or not, this country's mints used to issue coins with "Mind Your Business" as the motto.

The first was the Fugio cent, a copper coin designed by Benjamin Franklin as first issued in 1787.

13 And once again, focusing on what government is doing is sorta like trying to put the toothpaste back in the barn, after it's already escaped from the asylum.

Government is going after vaping because the Big Tobacco Industrial Complex, and the Big Pharma NRT Industrial Complex don't like the fact that vaping is OFTEN a safer alternative to smoking, AND a more effective means of quitting that shitty NRTs.

So govie is doing the bidding of their masters, the big corporations who own the politicians.

What is annoying about the "but the healthcare costs!" argument is that they only care about the costs for uncool (i.e. non-elitist) habits and activities.

Rock climbing is very dangerous, so are motorcycles and scooters - even bicycles. Hey, I could even argue that pot is dangerous* because it gives you the munchies that make you eat bad food. Try selling a ban on those things in SF

45 For a great perspective on the progressive mindset and why they seek to control every aspect of our lives, check out the 1916 movie Intolerance, which is free if you have Amazon Prime. It weaves together four stories around this theme. Three of them are set in historical times and focus mainly in religious Intolerance, but the central story is set in contemporary times, and revolves around progressive attempts to reform mankind by controlling people's lives "for their own good". At the heart of it is the fact that the founder of the progressive organization which seeks to control how everyone lives is basically a bitter old spinster who hates to see anyone else have any joy in their lives, but who unfortunately has an extremely wealthy brother, and therefore power.

People voluntarily hurtle themselves down mountains, equipped with nothing more than a couple of elongated flat shoes, and two sticks in their hands.

The devastation caused costs businesses to lose millions of dollars each year, with accidents happening all the time. Not to mention the cost to communities, who have to send fire and rescue teams up the sides of mountains, dangerously risking their OWN lives to help the willing participants in their own destruction.

How can government allow such things to continue.

In Oregon too. Two deaths. We lose more to drowning at state parks each summer.

Some commentator, probably Michael Malice, said that China will never fully reject One Child policy because it is the most invasive thing that government can do to its people.

I think this is as good an explanation for our government's actions for all my lifetime at least, and the state and feds would implement the One Child program here as well, if there was a ghost of a chance that it could be enforced.

74 Try fixing the potholes and the porous borders

This is a problem with politicos: the desire to make everybody better people than they were. As Mooch/Lawrence Taylor once threatened said, "[Barack will demand] That you push yourselves to be better. And that you engage. Barack will never allow you to go back to your lives as usual, uninvolved, uninformed.

Sod off, swampy. Your job is to fix the potholes and the porous borders, AND THAT'S IT.

The mayor of our little burg evinces the syndrome. It's not enough to fill the potholes, etc. No. He's got to make our little burg better, more crowded, more chi-chi. He's forcing out auto repair shops and such to put in, e.g. craft beer places crowded with wearers of man buns, eliminating parking ultimately to make downtown a pedestrian mall, and instituting policies to encourage show compassion toward vagrants.

If I wanted to live in a chi-chi liberal utopia, I'd have moved to one in the first place. Which, as astute observers will note, I did not.

"Journalists" have the same problem. They're trying to remake the world (largely in Karl Marx's vision, apparently), inspired by those hairballs Bernstein and Woodward. You're reporters, OK? So just report. No need to editorialize or lead us to the Promised Land.

109 In my old burg, a far flung suburb/exurb, there was a proposal to put up an apartment complex. The residents were up in arms over the idea. And eventually we got the project cancelled.

But holy fuck was the mayor a piece of shit about it. His entire argument was essentially it's unfair that we upper middle class residents of the town get to experience all the good things about our town. Why not let less fortunate people experience it too? And if you disagree you have no heart.

I'm 100% sure he was in the pocket of developers as were a few of the city council members.

Luckily enough people showed up at city hall every day to finally get the vote overturned. But it really opened my eyes up to how corrupt local govt is. It's always about the fucking money.

Seems like the only one interested in that is Trump - I have no doubt that is part of his trade war with China, and why we've seen some huge fentanyl busts recently.

He understands that the open border allows so much harmful stuff to enter the US, and that enemies such as China are happy to use it to wage chemical warfare on US citizens. I read recently China was forced to sell their lease of a US port (maybe Long beach? my memory is bad) - that is key, removing their ability to import bad stuff like fentanyl, infected food, empty vaping cartridges that are then filled with harmful oils and sold on the street.

Three things, and you left out the most important of them.

3. Kill people.

The trick is to ensure that gov't only kills foreign enemies in order to defend the nation, or irredeemable criminals with due process of law. Unfortunately, that's a nearly impossible trick, historically speaking, even within the US and we're probably the closest that any gov't in human history has ever come to pulling that off.

Monsanto has been demonized since forever. The anti-GMO nitwits have had it in for Monsanto ever since they began their program of genetically modifying plants. Farmers had it in for Monsanto because under the license agreement farmers could not retain the seeds of GMO crops. They've set it back a few times, generally when a Democrat gets elected.

And the "atomic scientists" in question are a political organization, not any kind of scholarly group. If you look at an issue, guess how many papers about actual "atomic science" you'll see? Hint: that would be none.

Among this month's "scholarly" features about "atomic science":

A food to farm as climate changes: elderberries

Students want "can do" leaders on climate

How the Koch brothers got us here

See any "atomic science" there? Neither do I.

I think OP used "cold turkey" to indicate a total switch from cigs to vapes, with no transition period of using both. So maybe a misuse of the term, but he got his point across.

And "cold turkey" itself originally referred to heroin/morphine addiction, not tobacco. Users who quit cold turkey would often develop goosebumps on their skin, which is how the term came to be.

It does seem to me that "second-hand vape" would cause the poor bastard who inhales it to be dosed with some of the vape's payload, be it flavor, nicotine, or whatever.

Many carried devices so they could inject directly into a leg while seated a table.

One of the things I find interesting in the television programs on the Sherlock Holmes is how much smoking they do.

At the same time we should be shutting our eyes to what is constantly passing before them were we to affect an ignorance of the the fact that a belief of the deleterious effects, particularly upon young people, has become very general, and that communications are constantly finding their way into the public press denouncing their use as fraught with great danger to the youth of both sexes."

If you were referring to the Jeremy Brett series, there were some amusing stories about that. In the original stories, Sherlock smokes a pipe when he wants to ponder things in his room, and he certainly never smoked cigarettes. But Brett was a 3 or 4 pack a day smoker, and couldn't stand not having a cigarette in his hand. They got him to do the pipe smoking thing as much as they could, but when they were filming they would have to take breaks every 20 minutes or so while he walked off set to smoke. Finally, the director and producer gave in and said fine, you wanna smoke cigarettes, smoke as many as you want. So Sherlock smokes cigarettes now.

There's some sadness as that series progresses, you can see Brett getting sicker and sicker. He died of heart disease.

What are we going to use for a name for the various whistle blowers coming forward?

We may as well stick with the same theme and call the Democrats first hearsay whistle blower "Hand Job".
Whistle blower number two can be called "Reach Around".
And since we know there will be more we might as well get ahead of the game and name number three "Circle Jerk" then "Gang Bang" for number four.

284 The reason the federal government is getting involved in the vaping industry is because close to 100 people across the country have had serious, permanent lung damage in a very short time due to vaping. Who doesn't support looking into a product that is causing serious and yes, fatal, lung damage?

Now, it turns out thst the damage seems to be csused by illicit concoctions with THC but that also include harmful chemicals. These look to have been repackaged so as to look legit. We wouldn't tolerate corn whiskey with methanol, we shouldn't tolerate this. We also no longer allow flavored cigarettes to be sold, so there is precedent for banjing flavored vaping solutions.

When the government becomes the insurer of last resort, it will want a say in what people do.

Total guess here, but hubby and I have been amused (gallows humor) at watching MA repeat all the same steps as CO re: pot legalization. .....
----

Nah. The biggest problems are whether there should be home delivery and how POC are getting shut out from getting a license to see it, because they don't have the connections or money.

The funny thing about the POC thing is, the woman pushing it as a problem is a pot shop carpet bagger from Colorado who got a license and opened a store in Lee Mass. One would think she would have stood aside for that.

Where I live, the closet shops are about 10 - 15 miles away. Other than the other stupidity of paying through the nose for licensed weed it hasn't been a big problem other than traffic in Northampton Mass.

I don't care if there was a thousand shops and they were all next door to schools. As long as you are not DUI material driving stoned, I don't care.

As the original post stated, do what you want and if the consequences are not good it's on you.
