Hey Big Government, Here's A Novel idea: Mind Your Own Damned Business
Try fixing the potholes and the porous borders and try to get a handle on your out-of-control spending and the obscene lawlessness among your law enforcement agencies. When you are done with that there is a long list of other significant issues that need to be addressed. And then maybe you get to worry about what private citizens do to themselves.
But what is most frustrating about the current brouhaha about vaping and e-cigarettes is the focus of the discussion on whether they are harmful or beneficial. That's not the point! The issue is clear; does the government get to control our private activities and behavior? I think cigarette smoking is dumb, so I don't do it. I have no interest in vaping, so I don't do it. But if you want to do it? Have at it! As long as you are responsible for the consequences of your behavior, why is it my or the government's business? The fact that these behaviors are far less destructive than cigarette smoking and can assist people in quitting smoking is nice...really nice! But once again, as long as there is no deleterious effect on society, why should we care? Sure, you can argue that the health effects cost us money, but that is what health insurance is for. Charge more for smokers and vapers (even though the data are sparse) if you feel like it. Setting the Record Straight on VapingThere’s a lot to unpack from this recent piece in The Federalist written by my friend and former White House advisor, Katy Talento, which endorses government plans to limit access to e-cigarette devices and flavors. I’ll take her main arguments — which are the ones most commonly made to support vaping bans — one at a time. Vaping Is Just as Bad as Smoking Katy belittles the idea that vaping is a public health win. Yet harm reduction is a valid goal, and vaping has helped millions quit traditional, combustible cigarettes. This is in part because vaping allows people to continue to mimic the physical act of smoking (which is particularly important to women) but with a device that delivers the nicotine in a safer, non-carcinogenic way. Don’t take my word for it. Consider the positions of Public Health England, the Royal College of Physicians, and Cancer Research U.K., all of which endorse e-cigarettes as an effective smoking cessation tool. A recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine confirms the efficacy of these devices, finding that smokers who used e-cigarettes were twice as likely as those who used other smoking cessation tools to successfully quit smoking. And these public health organizations estimate that vaping is 95 percent less harmful than smoking. Even the FDA admits that vaping is safer than traditional smoking.That's all great, and it exposes the Left's mania about control of every facet of our lives, except of course killing babies. But conspicuous in its absence is a substantive discussion of free will, of freedom from interference by the government, of liberty to make our own decisions. Oh...the article is from The National Review, and it is a morass of statist, big-government love. That the author stumbled onto the correct conclusion seems to be coincidence. I wonder what William F. Buckley would have said?

The devastation caused costs businesses to lose millions of dollars each year, with accidents happening all the time. Not to mention the cost to communities, who have to send fire and rescue teams up the sides of mountains, dangerously risking their OWN lives to help the willing participants in their own destruction.
How can government allow such things to continue.

In Oregon too. Two deaths. We lose more to drowning at state parks each summer.
Some commentator, probably Michael Malice, said that China will never fully reject One Child policy because it is the most invasive thing that government can do to its people.
I think this is as good an explanation for our government's actions for all my lifetime at least, and the state and feds would implement the One Child program here as well, if there was a ghost of a chance that it could be enforced.

Don't vape or smoke never have, 2nd hand or 3rd,4th or 5th smoke is not harmful, would have died long ago as my dad from my early childhood toteenage smoked around me all the time.

I've always felt local government should be one place free from rightwing/leftwing tensions. I mean mayors don't have to worry about making the world a better place to live. They should worry about making their towns and cities better places to leave.
But now it seems to all be about attacking the interests of the people who elect them.

A few weeks ago I read an OMG OMG OMG we're all going to die article about - wait for it - 3 deaths from paddle boarding in the state. You'd think the world as we know it was ending the way they went on and on about the "dangers" or paddle boarding. None of the 3 were wearing life jackets.
And of course the solution was more govt, more rules, more regulations. Because I'm sure the 3 assholes who are too cool to wear a life jacket would absolutely have followed even more stringent rules.
I'd guess on any summer weekend there have to be 50,000 people paddle boarding in the state. But because 3 idiots didn't wear their life jacket, the other 49,997 will now have to put up with more shit and pay more to enjoy the sport.

Five years ago someone here (maybe even the boss) put up a thread about e-cigs. I was a pack-a-day smoker then. That post inspired me and I quit cold turkey, switching to e-cigs and eventually vapes.
I stopped coughing and had twice the energy, with none of the stress of quitting.
You will never convince me that vaping is even one tenth as harmful as smoking.

In my old burg, a far flung suburb/exurb, there was a proposal to put up an apartment complex. The residents were up in arms over the idea. And eventually we got the project cancelled.
But holy fuck was the mayor a piece of shit about it. His entire argument was essentially it's unfair that we upper middle class residents of the town get to experience all the good things about our town. Why not let less fortunate people experience it too? And if you disagree you have no heart.
I'm 100% sure he was in the pocket of developers as were a few of the city council members.
Luckily enough people showed up at city hall every day to finally get the vote overturned. But it really opened my eyes up to how corrupt local govt is. It's always about the fucking money.

He understands that the open border allows so much harmful stuff to enter the US, and that enemies such as China are happy to use it to wage chemical warfare on US citizens. I read recently China was forced to sell their lease of a US port (maybe Long beach? my memory is bad) - that is key, removing their ability to import bad stuff like fentanyl, infected food, empty vaping cartridges that are then filled with harmful oils and sold on the street.

I switched to them, and then a year or two later he talked about the book by Alan Carr, How to Stop Smoking the Easy Way. Read that the day before an Ash Wednesday, and quit "for Lent." I think nicotine is mildly addictive, where the degree of intensity is variable, but it is not carcinogenic. Burning tobacco smoke is. It sort of follows to me that inhaling almost any burning product can't be good for you. Vaping seems closer to inhaling moist air with an nicotinoid aroma!

I've seen the remains on the seedier streets of Portland where little micro-breweries and specialty coffee shops attempted to operate small restaurants with a few outdoor tables and chairs. I can only gather that the patrons were averse to sharing the sidewalks with bums and violent druggies that abound.Now abandoned, you can still see these creatures walking around like zombies, or animatedly talking to themselves or getting into a scuffle with one another in front of these now boarded up businesses.

It does seem to me that "second-hand vape" would cause the poor bastard who inhales it to be dosed with some of the vape's payload, be it flavor, nicotine, or whatever.
And whatever happens to all that propylene glycol? Does it settle out on walls, floors, and furniture? Or does it just evaporate. Tobacco smoke sure as Hell stains the surfaces of rooms and cars, after all.

If you were referring to the Jeremy Brett series, there were some amusing stories about that. In the original stories, Sherlock smokes a pipe when he wants to ponder things in his room, and he certainly never smoked cigarettes. But Brett was a 3 or 4 pack a day smoker, and couldn't stand not having a cigarette in his hand. They got him to do the pipe smoking thing as much as they could, but when they were filming they would have to take breaks every 20 minutes or so while he walked off set to smoke. Finally, the director and producer gave in and said fine, you wanna smoke cigarettes, smoke as many as you want. So Sherlock smokes cigarettes now.
There's some sadness as that series progresses, you can see Brett getting sicker and sicker. He died of heart disease.

What are we going to use for a name for the various whistle blowers coming forward?
Watergate had "Deep Throat"
We may as well stick with the same theme and call the Democrats first hearsay whistle blower "Hand Job".
Whistle blower number two can be called "Reach Around".
And since we know there will be more we might as well get ahead of the game and name number three "Circle Jerk" then "Gang Bang" for number four.
The back alley of the internet has plenty of more material when needed.

One of his longtime musicians, I forget the name, died after falling asleep with a lit cigarette which set the couch on fire.

The reason the federal government is getting involved in the vaping industry is because close to 100 people across the country have had serious, permanent lung damage in a very short time due to vaping. Who doesn't support looking into a product that is causing serious and yes, fatal, lung damage?
Now, it turns out thst the damage seems to be csused by illicit concoctions with THC but that also include harmful chemicals. These look to have been repackaged so as to look legit. We wouldn't tolerate corn whiskey with methanol, we shouldn't tolerate this. We also no longer allow flavored cigarettes to be sold, so there is precedent for banjing flavored vaping solutions.
When the government becomes the insurer of last resort, it will want a say in what people do.

Nah. The biggest problems are whether there should be home delivery and how POC are getting shut out from getting a license to see it, because they don't have the connections or money.
The funny thing about the POC thing is, the woman pushing it as a problem is a pot shop carpet bagger from Colorado who got a license and opened a store in Lee Mass. One would think she would have stood aside for that.
Where I live, the closet shops are about 10 - 15 miles away. Other than the other stupidity of paying through the nose for licensed weed it hasn't been a big problem other than traffic in Northampton Mass.
I don't care if there was a thousand shops and they were all next door to schools. As long as you are not DUI material driving stoned, I don't care.
As the original post stated, do what you want and if the consequences are not good it's on you.

Vaping? I have a solution for both smoking and vaping.The Vaping helmet.Looks like a fish bowl filters the smoke from escaping into the environment it will be like a car, re burning and inhaling the vaped product endlessly into the vaper.
