Absolute Shock CNN Poll: It's not the "True Cons" of the Republican Party Who Are NeverTrump, It Is the Moderate/Left Wing of the GOP That Is NeverTrump

But how could this be?

I have been repeatedly assured by the NeverTrumpers -- all of whom are urban professionals with strong liberal sympathies and leanings -- that they are in fact not liberal-leaning at all, but in fact the very Truest of all True Conservatives.

And yet here's a CNN poll showing that almost everyone in the GOP who is anti-Trump or "NeverTrump" hails from the... left of the party.

I... I don't understand it. It's as if the NeverTrumpers, the same people who lied endlessly about their actual preferred candidate in 2016, are still lying about their actual politics.

It's as if a rump of connected-to-corporate-money liberals has been tricking and conning the actual conservative base of the party into supporting a soft liberal rule for decades, and that this cohort -- which is no more than 25% of the party, tops -- is now angry that they have been found out and ejected from their position of Minority Rule.

And yet, that's what the Science (TM) says:

But CNN/SSRS polling in September suggests that Trump should be more worried about a part of the Republican Party that gets less notoriety: the more moderate part. This part of the party won't play a large role in impeachment proceedings, but their feelings toward impeachment and Trump in general could hurt his re-election bid.

The yearning for impeachment and removing Trump from office has risen significantly among moderate and liberal potential Republicans (i.e. Republicans and Republican leaning independents). Nearly a third of moderate/liberal potential Republicans in our latest CNN poll said they wanted Trump impeached and removed last week, while about two-thirds didn't want that. Back in late May, the split was 16% for impeachment and removal and 81% against it. This is statistically significant movement.

The seeming shift of this moderate/liberal potential Republican bloc shouldn't be too surprising, given what a different CNN poll found in early September. In that poll, 25% of moderate/liberal potential Republicans disapproved of the job Trump was doing as president. Only 69% approved. Trump's job approval ratings with this moderate/liberal Republican bloc looks like the percentage who want him impeached and removed from office.

This is why anyone who's serious about border/immigration enforcement cannot be called "very conservative" on this issue by this group of well-heeled urban liberals -- that would make them liberals on this issue, which they are, but they want to lie and continue misrepresenting themselves as the very ne plus ultra of conservatism.

So they brand a position of actual border enforcement/immigration law enforcement as "Nativist" or "Nationalist" or even "Racist" -- anything except that which it is, conservative, because if they're compelled to admit that they're a cadre of unreformed paleoliberals tracing their political ancestry to the Nelson Rockefeller liberal wing of the party, and then the liberal saboteurs in the Reagan Administration, and then the liberal tax-raisers of the Bush the Elder administration, conservatives just might start wondering why they're allowing control of the "conservative" media and the Republican Party itself to remain in the hands of people who are not conservative, but merely wealthy Democrats who want to fight for the freedoms of corporations.

Update:

I suppose that this is why the Conservative Inc. fellows were so sure that Trump was just giving lip-service to the conservative beliefs and that he was merely a con-man who would betray the Right when he got into office.

Because that is what they do and he was stealing their grift.

Hey, they worked years perfecting that grift.

67 I'm not that far right--but I am a vocal advocate for the social right, all the same--and I got the idea that the middle-right has been "farming" the right for years.

And I think this cinches it.
Posted by: Axeman

I'm not really that far right either, but I am a believer in, get this, representative political democracy, and I believe that a majority conservative party should have, get this, majority conservative representation in political office, bureaucracy, think tanks, and media.

137 Other than wanting lower taxes, there's essentially no policy preference held by the NeverTrump wing that overlaps with the Republican base.

And even the NeverTrump lower tax stuff is preferred more in the abstract (might involve a messy political fight you know) and it anyways tends to manifest mostly in Donor Class friendly ways (inheritance tax reductions, corporate tax reductions, carried interest regulations, etc.) rather than just straight income tax cuts.

Coalitions don't have to share every preference, but it's real difficult when the overlap is a single issue and everything else is in diametric opposition.

190 Trump's support has grown in many of the places he won in 2016. Democrats are counting on the Midterms as an indicative that his support is shrinking. But those race dynamics and voting patterns are much different than the General. Plus think about how much has changed since then and what is coming. Russia is gone, Ukraine is blowing up plus the actual Democrat policies. Barr and the IG reports are going to start rolling off.

Even with the midterm bias against the administration, certain trends in 2016 kept up in 2018. Ohio, for example, retained its solid red status if not even more so. Ohio has always been a bellweather, and if it is not in play the rest of the Midwest slides rightward along with it.

Yes, she's a terrible person, a lousy candidate and not well, but this time she may have learned from her mistakes-will go the Midwest, will marginally apologize for calling Trump voters "deplorable". will say "In my time away I have given a lot of thought to things and I realize that miners perform a valuable service." She will be coached carefully, will lose weight, will get another facelift and the election interference will be even broader deeper and the cheating on an even greater scale.

The bulk of her allure in 2016 was her inevitability. That is long gone, and the leftist tilt of the party hasn't helped her either. 248 Everyone who watched his 2016 campaign knew that he was already at the put up your feet and coast stage of his career. He's had a nice couple of years with a Federal job, he doesn't need the money. I'm sure he'll come back to Texas and get some Emeritus status at one of the Universities, allowing him to fund raise and go to some parties and football games on weekends. I think he's done everything he ever really wanted to do.

I feel like Rick Perry could have been a real contender, but he just seems sort of lazy.

He also unfortunately got into the whole Hispandering wing of the GOP that probably cost him the nomination in 2012. Saying we didn't "have a heart" because we didn't want subsidized college tuition for illegals was when I wrote him off.

He would have been a world better than Romney though.

---
We are in total agreement on those two sentences.

Well, I think it's a no-brainer that deceiving a good chunk of the electorate on whether they have representation is anti-republican (small r).

Also notice that the Washington Crowd-Management party no longer invests anything into the idea of an informed public.

You get an email saying that the head prosecutor of Russia has official documentation on Hillary committing crimes in Russia?

It should be against the law to even meet with someone to discuss that, citizen!

There might be something behind Joe Biden's VISIBLE conflict of interest in getting Ukraine's prosecutor fired?

Foreign information is HIGH CRIME! (If Democrats are going to lose.)

Of course, they created the word "swiftboating" which is for the dirty tactics of publicizing a counter-story so close to the election that the candidate can't counter it with all the News horses and all the New men.

I once convinced a liberal that JFK was far right by attributing some JFK quotes to Rush Limbaugh. The liberal scoffed, saying he'd expected no less from a far right nut job.

Then I told him they were JFK quotes, and provided a link.

329 Funny, if Volker's testimony were so devastating, the Dems would have already leaked all over the damn place.

Let me put some learning on everyone...

Withholding aid for the Ukrainians not investigating 2016 is NOT the same as withholding aid for not investigating Vice President Kinnock and his drug-huffing spawn. Because Barr and company are digging on the former, the strategy is make people believe it is the latter. That's what every bit of this is about.

ace, you have been saying this for years, when there is a coalition, you need to deliver to those who make up the coalition, at least now and then, in order for that coalition to survive. The GOP spent decades not doing that. The reaping has begun.

Look, the moderate wing has every right to push to reclaim their power. That's how politics works. Where I got all something something is when the French Davidians lie about it being about power and cloak themselves in Absolute Moral Authority. Yeah, no.

I would decline to be interviewed for a poll. I don't think I'm unusual in that respect. I'm not a joiner, don't want to be helpful to them, and I don't trust them to keep it anonymous, especially after the last several years. I think people who agree to be polled, and aren't sort of suspicious and hostile, skew to the political left.

By election day, polls will show a Democrat sure thing, again, and be wrong, again.

But dicks also fuck assholes - assholes who just want to shit on everything. Pussies may think they can deal with assholes their way. But the only thing that can fuck an asshole is a dick, with some balls. The problem with dicks is that sometimes they fuck too much or fuck when it isn't appropriate - and it takes a pussy to show them that. In fairness, the quote is attributed to the late William F. Buckley, who said he founded National Review as a place where these former leftists who wised up could write. Yes, a majority of them (but certainly not all) were Jews, and the Podhoretz Brothers also started Commentary magazine for them.

415 These people are losers. It's built into their DNA. They wouldn't know what to do if they win, which is why policy wise when they do stumble into office, they go along with the D's. Oh, sure, they put up a slappy fight. But that's of course just for show. If they were to win anything, they might be held responsible for what happens after. Since success has far fewer vectors than failure, they calculate that responsibility is too risky of an endeavor. You can see this mentality in Kasich and Romney pushing for a primary EVEN THOUGH FOUR STATES AREN'T GONNA HAVE ONE. It's a formula to lose. It's a formula for losers.

I think a large part of the hatred of Trump is because he's shown that stuff can get done, and it can get done quickly. No "reaching across the aisle", no "if we only had all three branches and the popular vote" BS, but working as the executive within the powers of the executive.

We're so f*cked when he's gone, though. The Democrats have already shown what is coming.

I'm pro-Trump because he's Still Not Hillary.

I'm pro-Trump because the "left" has lost it's mind and that's frightening. I don't want them EVER to have power again.

I'm pro-Trump because he's don't magnitudes better at foreign policy than any president in my life-time. I guess when you build hotels overseas you actually get a good idea about how foreign governments work. And North Korea may get sorted, and that's worth the History Books right there, if nothing else good happens that's enough.

442 Posted by: Synova at October 04, 2019 04:48 PM (BD/yx)

I tend to agree. In the 30 years in which he was a public figure but not yet into politics, Trump sure didn't act conservative, which made it hard for me to believe his act in the primary.

But eventually I evolved to the point where, as a conservative, I don't care if my President is a conservative, but only whether he implements conservative policies.
Maybe Trump doesn't believe in the ideology of it. Maybe he's only doing this stuff to get elected. But who cares? In the end, conservatism isn't a coherent ideology anyway. It's a temperament.
