One intriguing hypothesis as to the source of their behavior is that the berserkers ingested a specific kind of mushroom with psychoactive properties. Nuclear Winter for generations - in addition to Global Cooling."
Woah. So nukes could lead to an ice age? ------------- Flashback, 1991: Cornell University astronomer Carl Sagan says Saddam Hussein's orders to torch Kuwaiti oil wells, if carried far enough, could unleash smoke clouds that would disrupt agriculture across South Asia and darken skies around the world. "You need a very small lowering of the average temperatures of the Northern Hemisphere to have serious consequences for agriculture," Sagan said. Scientists in Maryland and Colorado say such a disaster would require fires at hundreds of wells burning for months, but they agreed the potential exists in Kuwait for a "very catastrophic" environmental event. My memory is the nuclear winter calculations were falsified, intentionally, in scope.
A major nuclear war would throw a bunch of dust into the air - like say Karakatoa did - cooling the hemisphere it happens in for maybe a year or two. But Sagan and co intentionally claimed it would be more serious and cause something like an ice age. Well the line about X becoming indistinguishable from parody now applies to pernicious jackasses like Romney, not just pundits, the press, academia, or the Dems.
Forget all the context that makes any Trump request to Ukraine to share or pursue info about wrongdoing by American officials. Even shorn of context, it is a perfectly reasonable request. Not inappropriate in the slightest. Americans committing crimes and/or committing massive improprieties under color of authority overseas do *not* acquire special immunity by being political rivals of anyone. Just as those taking up arms do not get special immunity in the context of ongoing war - they get smoked if possible. And Biden's Ukraine misdeeds, shorn of context, are breath-taking, I recommend you try it some time. Romney seems phony to us; but he is sincere in his way. We have here discussed the role of Islamic apocalyptic, in ISIS. I see no reason we cannot do that for LDS. Brigham Young in 1855 delivered that is known as the White Horse Prophecy. "when the Constitution of the United States hangs, as it were, upon a single thread, they will have to call for the 'Mormon' Elders to save it from utter destruction; and they will step forth and do it". I suggest that the Senate is where G-d has called Romney to play kingmaker. Or so Romney believes. Posted by: boulder t'hobo at September 22, 2019 10:12 PM (ykYG2) 142

Progressive school districts are telling their students that they, personally, will die from climate change Unless Something Is Done. Furthermore, these school districts are normalizing mental illness - the students are being told that if they are depressive and hysterical over climate change, that something is wrong with them. We do not have the luxury of gradual change. In other words, democratic political processes won't work fast enough. They are preparing the field for a Democratic President to rule by decree. 22 Red Adair was a great American hero.
Posted by: ALH The real Red Adair was quite a character, and quite wealthy and successful. My late uncle used to make machined parts for his team they used to cap well heads (after putting out oil fires). He (uncle) used to fly down to Houston and land at Red's HQ, which was right on the airport taxiway. Red had his own 727 (or was it a 737 - I forgot) (?) parked right at his HQ, ready to go at a moments notice. Posted by: Bozo Conservative....lost in America at September 22, 2019 10:07 PM (hVpH7) I had the very great pleasure of meeting Mr. Adair in Kuwait, at the oilfields. he called me little lady, bought me dinner at the firefighter's chow hall, and gave me a Red Adair belt buckle, as 'a little sumpin' to remember him by." He and the teams turned that mess into usable oil fields in 9 months, about five years sooner than all the reporters were screaming it was going to take to put out all the fires. Elizabeth Warren the platonic ideal of bitchy shrew?
The only reason why Warren was elected to the Senate in 2012 was that Obama was at the top of the ticket. What a Cuck! George Will: Conservatives Would Win If Trump Loses https://t.co/k89pPKJWUF?amp=1 Would conservatives be better served by Trump losing in 2020 and having to find an actual policy agenda going forward? Yes, yes, and yes. There's no question about that. What would that look like? You would get arguments outside the political class from people like Yuval Levin and hopefully me. Within the political class, people would start paying attention to those arguments. Postwar conservatism was a bookish movement - Richard Weaver's Ideas Have Consequences and Friedrich Hayek and Milton Friedman - that evolved into a network of intellectual think tanks like American Enterprise Institute, the Cato Institute, and the Heritage Foundation. I think we'll have that again. There will be younger writers and younger politicians, and we'll have a genuine fight to see what comes next. There are signs of intelligent life in Congress, which knows it has delegated its job to presidents who will not always be progressives. But first, we have to clear the ground and remove this awful presence from our lives. "For all the scaremongering, their were some great nuclear war movies in the early 1980s."
If you're into alternate history, a kinda interesting site to check out is 1983: Doomsday. You may remember the story of Soviet Col. Stanislav Petrov, who, on Sept. 26, 1983, saw four incoming American missiles on his radar screen, and (correctly) reported them as a technical error rather than a real attack. Now, consider what would have happened had Col. Petrov NOT been there that day, and someone else who lacked his instincts had assumed the attack to be genuine, alerted his superiors, and started the ball rolling on all out nuclear war? That's the premise of 1983: Doomsday, which traces, in more or less real time, the reorganization of the world's societies and nations in the post-World War III era. Even now, more than 35 years later, what used to be the US, USSR, China, and Britain are still broken up into numerous smaller states, and technology and communications are just getting back to something perhaps resembling the pre-war "normal." 377 Hoping to get together with the gang to play in the next month or so. We use the 3.5 Edition with some house rules. I am running them in my African campaign and it's been a blast. Mixing in all kinds of things - vampires, mummies, ghost pirates along the eastern coast, etc. etc.
And I've tossed historical things in the mix. We've played for over 30 years as a group and I have been playing since the late 70's. Good times had by all. And it's an excuse to drink soda and eat junk food for the weekend. Posted by: turambar at September 23, 2019 12:19 AM (Gylu/) 386

So, saw Mark Knopfler at the Santa Barbara Bowl on Friday. The old man shuffles across the stage rather than struts, but he's still brings it. Backing him were ten other musicians, all old white guys. But, among them they played 49 different instruments, so there's your damn diversity. The venue was spectacular, and the weather was perfect. The people in the row in front of us were like fidgety school children, constantly moving seats or getting up to get more beer. The ladies behind us were chatty Cathy's, but fortunately the music was mostly loud enough to drown them out.
Marks playing and singing were spectacular, and his banter was entertaining, concise, and devoid of politics. He said his plan was to keep performing till he trips on stage and can't get up, so if you ever have a chance to see him, I'd highly recommend it. He will be welding up the hanging bar and hinge system, in order that Weasel's steel plates will quickly return to register after a hit, ready for the shooter's next round, nearly instantly. Beats the hell out of chain-hung plates on the rifle line. Means that Weasel's precious instruction time won't be wasted in waiting on chain hung plates to finish oscillating after a hit. I've got some wood to pre-cut before the Mo Meet, too. I think the attendees will be well pleased with the Shooter's Smorgarsboard they'll find laid out before them. Wait till you get to remove and install a marine toilet in the cramped head of a 30 ft. sloop. One needs double jointed shoulders, elbows, wrists and fingers to form the compound bends necessary to get "this wrench" on "that nut" and turn them the right vs. the wrong way. Followed by the USCG NCO dropping that dye tablet into the bowl, and your pumping the "flush" pump, with the "Y" valve directed to the holding tank. And you pray that not smidgen of that neon blue shows up at your boat's waterline. Cause that's one helluva 'spensive fine. Mobile home? Let me at it. Soon as my car needs some brakes, that is. If you look reallllly carefully, you can see that the lady golfer is using a 5-wood -- and yet her gaze is toward a point in the distance not really high enough over the horizon to be looking at a perfectly struck 5-wood shot. instead, she's looking at the height that perhaps a 3-wood ball's arc would take. This means that although she may have had good "form" in her swing, she probably topped the ball a bit -- not so badly that is ruined the shot, but just enough that she missed "the sweet spot" upon contact. Slightly topping a 5-wood isn't actually that bad of a thing to do -- the ball will not reach its full height, but instead will go out straighter and (in some instances) even further that well-stuck 5-wood shot. But going further isn't always what you as the golfer wanted -- which is usually why you chose a 5-wood in the first place, instead of a driver.(i.e. a 1-wood). She may have overshot the fairway on a dogleg, if that was why she was hitting a 5-wood, or overshot the green on a par-3 (notice she's teeing off). But she looks satisfied with her shot, so she'll probably be OK. Posted by: zombie at September 23, 2019 01:32 AM (Q3dyo) 470

Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia Even if everyone in the USA moved into caves and we immediately shut down all energy usage and all carbon burning forever, living off foraged berries and carrion, it would have nearly zero effect on the carbon in the atmosphere -- because the US is not causing the "problem" (if one insists on defining it as a problem, which it isn't). The "problem" is being caused primarily by four countries -- China and India (due to ungodly amounts of coal burning) and Indonesia and Brazil (due to diminishing extent of their rainforests). And whatever manufacturing the US scales back on here domestically, where we do it relatively "clean"ly, will be taken up by China instead, where they do it "dirt"ily. Whatever restrictions that Congress puts on energy usage here, therefore, will actually INCREASE the amount of carbon going into the atmosphere, on a global scale. So even the leftist Climate Alarmists, if they were honest (which they aren't), should be in favor of amping UP the US economy, not in favor of throttling it. Needless to say, all of this is a hoax and a farce, because more carbon in the atmosphere means more plant growth worldwide (a documented real phenomenon known as "global greening"), which brings with it not just "carbon sequestration" (thereby naturally eliminating the "problem" through self-regulated balancing) but actually a fabulous INCREASE in biodiversity, all over the planet. Ultimately, it doesn't matter in the slightest what laws and regulations congress passes, not merely for the reasons you accurately cite (slow pace, and incompetence) but because nothing we do here on this continent is relevant to the issue, even if our government was quick and efficient in getting things done. A good exercise for anyone frustrated by our lack of space capabilities is the exploration of the world via the oceans using sailing ships.
It took quite a few hundred years for humans to go from the square rigged deep hulled ocean going craft to fully explore the various places unavailable by other means of travel. Even after knowing the value of exploitable resources it still took many years for trade (out and return) to take place on any scale. Many colonies were lost through disease, lack of planning and enemy action. And all this in conditions survivable via normal activities of humans. (air readily available, food and water with some planning but usually available locally) For space travel we've got to take everything we need to survive with us and manage to propel ourselves. A heavy burden both size and technologically indeed. And there was/is no real need to do this exploration. Keep in mind that it wasn't until farming had reached a point where more people could survive and the population began to increase was exploration for the purpose of colonization begun in larger degree. When we have need of the special conditions of space for vital products (micro gravity, vacuum, lack of weather effects and quiescent geological conditions) and for exporting excess population will the drive for better vehicles in space become large enough to get a sizable minority into space. (our only really feasible answer to wayward asteroid collisions) Once we begin to travel more and more in intraplanetary space will better and faster means of propulsion be invented/developed. It may require the conditions of space for some of this technology to be discovered. I personally believe that when we reach the heliosphere (that gravitic boundary at the edge of the influence of the gravitational pull of our star) will we be able to perform the experiments needed to understand gravity fully so as to derive ways to control that force. (my personal belief is that at the interface between gravity fields of the stars will be found a physics that is not discoverable surrounded by gravity as we are and that travel between stars within a human time frame will begin) So although we didn't plant a colony on the moon, or get our flying car, we did take the first hesitant and expensive steps proving it could be done. Now we just need the reasons to do so for profit. Posted by: jakee308 - Hylozoist at September 23, 2019 02:05 AM (cxIsI) 487

It is the OCEANS, covering 71% of the planet, where all the "heavy lifting" of atmospheric self-regulation happens. As you correctly note, the world's jungles are NOT the "lungs" of the planet -- instead, photosynthesis in the ocean by plankton etc is where all the oxygen is coming from, on a scale that dwarfs any terrestrial contribution. Humans? Don't make me laugh. Carbon=bad? Don't make me laugh. Higher temperatures=bad? Don't make me laugh. Every aspect of this whole issue is misconstrued by the activists and the media. Posted by: jakee308 I don't understand how there can even be a "heliosphere" -- a "boundary" beyond which there is no gravitational effect from the Sun. According to General Relativity, every bit of matter in existence warps the space-time continuum, such that the sun's gravitation effect should in theory extend throughout the entire universe, with (admittedly) exponentially diminishing effect the further out you go. In fact, a single neutron 14 billion light-years away should, in theory, warp space-time everywhere, such that (with precise enough measuring devices) we ought to be able to detect it. If this is all the case (which I believe it to be), how can there be some arbitrary boundary at which the sun's gravitational pull reaches zero? Perhaps it gets so small that it is of negligible consequence, but as far as I know it can never be "zero" gravity. Posted by: zombie at September 23, 2019 02:18 AM (Q3dyo) 493

The heliosphere has nothing to do with the Sun's gravitational field. It has to do with the Sun's solar wind and magnetic field. Basically it is a bubble around the sun, of a radius of about 11 billion miles, that is "dominated" by the sun's solar wind and magnetic field. The boundary is known as the "heliopause" and this is the boundary of intersteller space, where the Sun's plasma domination ends. Voyager I crossed that boundary a while back and the data it was sending back showed the expected change in the plasma environment. But, drugs are good.
3 die, 4 others in serious to critical condition in Pittsburgh. All wearing an orange wristband. Went to an event, went to a house for an after party/drugs. I get a daily briefing from the NYT.
Background: Mr. Trump has accused Mr. Biden of using his position as vice president to help a Ukrainian energy company in 2016 that was paying his son Hunter. There has been no evidence that the former vice president intentionally tried to help his son. So we can move right to impeachment. Posted by: Bandersnatch at September 23, 2019 06:36 AM (FNXDu) 555

I'd like to suggest the Boulder Hobo to try women, not girls. He can thank me later. And probably somewhere besides Boulder, unless he's into aromatherapy. acupuncture. herbal medicine, visualisation, yoga, reiki, biofeedback, chiropractic, yoga, kinesiology, homeopathy, iridology, massage and other forms of bodywork, meditation and visualisation, nutritional therapy, psychic readings.....
I can point this out because I have family in Boulder, doing quite well, lovely town, nice people, but their fellow citizens are all really nuts, except for the Mexicans. Posted by: Ass Chum at September 23, 2019 06:39 AM (Jj+59) 558

I always imagine the afterlife as sort of like the high school cafeteria and you have to explain how you got there. After the "Big Dig" in Boston a 2,000 lb ceiling tile fell off the roof of a tunnel and killed a girl driver. I'd hate to go to heaven and have to say oh yeah a tunnel just fell on me. I'd really hate to say that I was the first h.sapiens sapiens to die from marijuana. Posted by: Bandersnatch at September 23, 2019 06:44 AM (FNXDu) 562

Before my knee was replaced I officiated three high school sports. Often my weekends were dealing with parents attempting to live vicariously through their children. I still miss reffing quite a bit. The parents are not one of those. My predecessor as Scoutmaster for our troop admonished me before I assumed the responsibility that I would have far fewer interpersonal problems among the youths, for whom the troop existed, than from their parents and guardians. He certainly was right. There have been incidents of significant discord among the adults over the twenty years that I have been involved with the troop. Every now and then their echoes will reverberate among current adult members, usually from two up to four individuals. When that happens, one of the immediate thoughts that comes to my mind is, "JFC, that incident is OVER, its outcome was SETTLED, and there's no damn good that'll result from continuing to SNIPE at one another because of it. GROW UP AND KNOCK IT OFF." Posted by: Krebs v Carnot: Epic Battle of the Cycling Stars (TM) at September 23, 2019 06:50 AM (6G4DD) 571

"Without a fundraising surge to close out this quarter, we do not see a legitimate long-term path forward," campaign manager Addisu Demissie wrote in the memo. It is laughable that any campaign staff member would use the word "legitimate" to describe any aspect of Severely Heterosexual Senator Cory Booker or his campaign. He is a Fools' Gold plated fraud through and through. Nevertheless, he is in good company, because all the other Dims running are Fools' Gold plated frauds, too.
