Not The ONT You Were Expecting, But The ONT You Deserve

dl0HcXQ.jpg

We've secretly replaced tonight's ONT with a mixture of Justin Trudeau blackface memes and Japanese commercials starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. Let's see if the Horde can tell the difference.

I heard a whisper in the tunnels today
They were comin' for my neighbor and they took him away
He was preachin' revolution when he talked in his sleep
and his mother called security and sold him out cheap

What a perfect place
Everywhere you look you can see his face
This perfect place

It's such a comfort when he knows what you think
It's a little like Santa Claus faded to pink
We got the cutest little cameras hangin' everywhere
After a while you just forget they're there

75 Busiest day ever on the main range on my duty day, yesterday. And some of it was hunting-season tune-up/sighting-in [for guys taking trips to CO or WY, for elk, in 2 cases] - but a lot of it was not [evil black rifles, lots of pretty 19O3s, just to torment me I think]. We were wondering what was going on. We didn't figure it out.

Rested, the Mosin shooting Soviet surplus ammo was perfectly acceptable at 1OO yds. Off-hand was not that bad, but need to practice a lot more. Also, prone, and 2OO yds, and raising heart rate first. But a 1924 rifle with iron sights and cheap military ammo being pretty much practically accurate is fun.

No Border Patrol sightings, quite rare. And oddly, F-18s flying comparatively low/slow. Chopper traffic of all kinds common out there, fast movers not.

My Iron Maiden albums were hit and miss. Capitol/EMI. Piece of Mind skipped from the get-go. I was pissed. Number of the Beast and the first two are good though.

195 Laura reported on the climate strike stuff, but the big story is the homeless problem in Seattle, and the cop who this week filed a $10 million lawsuit because he was ordered to clean up one of the sites and got sick.

For those not on the west coast, this homelessness happens in Democrat-run cities. It is out of hand. It's filthy and disease infested. I could show you blocks of tattered tents on the side walks, or 35 year old broken down motor homes lining streets of some of the neighborhoods.

The motor homes get tagged and then towed. Then a few months later, a couple of people buy them back at public auction for a few hundred bucks, and then rent them out for a couple of bucks a day to the homeless. And then the process repeats itself.

Yet the Mayor and city council say nothing about it, other than "we have to do something."

Ya' think?

Seattle, a billion dollar city run by ten-cent brains.

Which, nobody has to like prostitution, but it ain't human trafficking. And it renders the term rather useless.

There is a river that flows into the Pacific Ocean, and scientists have found high levels of nasty disease in the ocean and along the beach in both directions.

Dr Drew said he has told his kids and his family to stay out of the ocean for fear of catching disease.

Typhus, TB, and other nasty stuff has been detected in the river feeding the ocean, from the waste that is runoff during rain.

That defines failure. But white nationalism, racism, blah, blah, blah.

It would be interesting if you had some already sampled competition in the bag when you finally find a Popeye's sandwich.

My guess is this is just a lot of hype, but I would be glad to be proven wrong.

I have not found a really satisfying fast food chicken sandwich yet.. Chik-fi-let is pretty damn good.. but I am not crazy about the corn mean breading..

Culvers here in the very limited midwest is good, but should have more meat and also has the cornmeal breading.. Popeyes looks like it uses the same crispy crust as their chicken fingers.. so it would be nice to go into detail on this stuff.

That's not necessarily the case, anymore.

Mono titles bring big bucks these days. Lot fewer of them around.

Just depends on which run it was from.
If it was an original Meet the Beatles and not the 80s re. the Mono would have the larger population, I believe.

One of the peak cases of audiophile lunacy I read a while back was a review of a very expensive USB cable to be used for digital audio purposes.

A USB cable. The guy claimed he could hear the difference with the superior USB cable. Plus, you had to "burn it in" to get maximum effect.

This was digital of course. The whole point of digital is that it doesn't matter what the quality of the transmission medium is. It either gets through or it doesn't.

I had always assumed that human trafficking referred to women, including underage girls, being kidnapped and forced into prostitution.
On "Cops" type shows the prostitutes seem to mostly be female junkies who go into prostitution voluntarily to get drug money.

It's a terrible business, but a big part of the problem seems to be addiction.

Combine that with the nasty strains of diseases that are coming from with the illegals from all over the world, and the rising amount of anti-vaxxers who are eroding the herd immunity numbers, and we are looking at a pandemic, or several at once.

It's only a matter of time before they have a bubonic plague outbreak in LA. There was a story about that a while back. The infection rate in the exploding rat population is getting close to the threshold where it can then start jumping to humans easily.

And then all they'll have is Chinese antibiotics which will all be contaminated with rocket fuel.

I see some of the much-liked [around here] pundits and journalists are providing the stunning insight that there can be no "scandal" involving a president's exercise of his near-unlimited discretion in conducting foreign policy, especially WRT dealing directly with foreign officials - so the whole "whistleblower" thing is ridiculous. Line staffers do not "blow the whistle", on f***king policy questions, on the f***ing president. As some of us noted immediately, and as most of us *should* damn well understand.

Nothing against these people, but when their obvious observations are met with such praise and respect, it makes one wonder just how low-information things are even among the *more* informed and thoughtful slice of the populace.

417 Just got a bit of welcome news.

Listed a full kitchen of circa 2008, GE "Profile" kitchen appliances on Craigslist.

22 cu.ft. fridge/freezer/ice/watermaker. High-end, glass-top "slide in/over" oven and range. The glass top extends out 1/2" over each side, and covers the stove/countertop gap. Front controls, and it's easily the most accurate temperature holding oven I've ever used.

Combo Microwave/Vent Hood, Stove Light.

Basic "Profile" series dishwasher. Works like a champ, but is loud as hell.

All of that is out in the garage, 'cause it's all been replaced with new LG stainless stuff.

I told my boss about the Craigslist ad, and after one look, she writes me to say she wants to buy it all, at asking price, no haggling.

Given that I priced it all about 15% higher than Craigslist averages, I'd say I'm doing OK.

Stuff is all eleven years old, but it's damn near mint and it all works.

Just so happens she's building out a guest apartment over her garage, and she was looking for something EXACTLY like this to buy, and this is all one source, one series, matched colors, etc.

And that pays back about 1/5 of what all the LG stuff cost.

Oh, and I did all the remove and re-install work. Let's just say that the LG stuff was a magnitude of order harder to do than the GE it replaced.

That added complexity was due to anti-tip devices, odd electric and water connections in their dishwasher, and having to have some sheet metal custom bent to create a plenum to match the microwave's 2"x10" exhaust vent to the house's 5" diameter "to exterior" stove vent.

But Home Despot wanted right at $400 to install all this.

I should've paid 'em to do it. Watching them try to solve the mircrowave vent puzzle would have been worth the price of admission.

418 What, precisely, do these kids want in order to stop global climate change? And how far back do they want to go? All the way to the ice age? Maybe just to the Midieval Warming Period? Or just 1959?

Friday MSNBC highlighted a climate change protest in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, where three people stood under gallows on ice blocks with nooses around their necks.

Host Yasmin Vossoughian said, "Millions of young people are taking to the streets to call for action on climate change. The global march includes events in 150 countries. What started this morning in Australia, Asia and Africa is now surging across Europe and the Americas. In Berlin, protesters used a striking visual message to push for action. Standing on ice blocks with nooses around their necks. A stark call for change before it's too late."

MeTV has rotated around back to the first season of Perry Mason. First season Perry was a bit more badass than later Perry. He would get very close to crossing the legal line, employing clever legal trickery.

He just suggested without telling his client to fire a gun harmlessly right before the cops got there to arrest her for murder in order to make the powder test they would do useless.

Later Perry would never do that.

I'll put $100 on this as fact and cause.

Unless "dedicated" to an automotive factory's shipments, most of those Ro/Ro ships carry a LOT of Heavy Equipment as a major part of their lading.

Well, a D-11 Cat has to be chained down *just* a bit more securely than a row of 110 identical VW Passats.

And it's when that chain-down job fails, that the shit hits the fan.

If a single Passat were to break containment, well, it's going to bounce around a bit, damage some neighboring cars, but the odds are thin that it's going to break enough *other* vehicles free to cause an incident.

Let a D-11 Cat break it's chains though? Or a Massey-Ferguson Harvester? (and "etc." to include EVERY kind of heavy equipment).

Well then, when that happens, Mr. Cat slides downhill across the deck, and that much mass and momentum breaks EVERY chain on EVERY piece of other heavy equipment in encounters in it's path.

And ALL of those mechanical monsters end up on the downhill side of whatever deck they're on.

Guess what phenomenon then tends to repeat on every other row of every other deck?

Odds are near 100% that this is what caused that ship to flop over mid-turn.

Didn't take a hurricane at sea.

Just ONE careless chain-down by the Stevedores, and the ship carrying enough knots to cause an actual heel in the turn, and well, that's when the first domino was tipped.

Remember that Boeing 747, carrying an M-1 Abrams out of (IIRC) Baghram airport? Thing stalled in an extremely "nose up" attitude shortly after takeoff.

That's cause the tank broke chains and slid to the aft of the cargo deck, rendering the aircraft's Center of Gravity "unflyable".

Somehow, the pilot got the nose down a bit, and the tank slid forward, confounding every flight control input the pilot could bring to bear.

This resulted in a near-zero forward airspeed, complete "stall" of air over the wings, and a plunge to the ground in "straight and level" attitude.

We've all seen the video of that one, I think?

https://tinyurl.com/y3ackokc

In comparison.. I'm thankful that all of this ships' crew escaped and survived.

Would have been full loss of crew, I think. She went over faster than a back alley whore when gifted with a pair of twenties.

There was ZERO time to deploy a lifeboat, and much less to don survival suits.

Outside of that dredged shipping channel, I'd expect an average water depth of fifteen to twenty feet. And that's what the ship looks to be lying in, there on her side.

Shelley Winters could've damn near waded out.

Or maybe it was Shelley Winters who slid to the downhill side?

Never too late. Do what the fuck you want to do, its that simple. Pick a lane and go for it. I mean yeah, you have to fixate on a few important things, like job, health, etc but there is always time to do things for you. There are no rules, just pick something that interests you and go for it. It can be big, it can be small, what matters is that its something for you. You are the captain of your voyage. I always say this, but the longest journey starts with the first step.

Means that if I find myself on the plains of Afghanistan, equipped with a Barrett .50 cal rifle topped with a Nightforce Scope, then my purpose is to take out Hadji at long range and with extreme prejudice.

Conversely, if I find myself aboard a forty foot sloop in the mid-Atlantic, my purpose is to navigate safely to shore.

And if I find myself innocently minding my own business at 12:15 am CST, and Nurse Ratchett happens to log on, then my purpose is to BRACE BRACE BRACE! Well, okay. That's if YOU find yourself here and she logs on and then it's YOUR purpose.

And that's as it should be, my friend.

507 324 I owned a 1987 Ford Ranger. Lots of miles but finally the clutch went. Too much to repair.

I got the bright idea because I had the money to buy a new one.

Ergonomically it was a POS. They redesigned it to look on the outside puffery and on the inside it was cramped for me.

Couldn't afford a Toyota or I would've gone Japanese.

I hated that car for the 7 years I owned it. Turned a 50 year Ford Man into a NEVER EVER FORD AGAIN.

I owned a Ford Ranger for about 5 days. I bought it only to realize that I felt like Chris Farley "Big guy in a little suit". I sold it quick and bought a Dodge Dakota. That was a good truck, I just recently got rid of it when it became more Mopar rust than Mopar parts. I replaced it with a Toyota Tundra which I really like, except the seat won't.....quite....slide back enough for my 6' frame. I mean, an inch and a half would do it, but nope. Won't really make a difference, none of these are daily drivers, they're just something I keep around for when I need to haul something, but, a damn inch and a half. Hell, I'd be happy with an inch. Everything else about the Tundra works great. (These are all 97 (Ford) to 03 (Toyota) trucks - old trucks you pick up for a couple grand to have around for lugging stuff)

531 > In comparison.. I'm thankful that all of this ships' crew escaped and survived.

There's an old Alaska bush pilot story about a similar incident, but on a smaller scale.

The pilot was flying a heavy piece of equipment into a remote site. When he landed and hit the brakes, he heard the equipment break loose and start to slide forward. As he had no desire to have it go out the front of the plane and hit the runway with him squashed underneath it, he spun the plane around so it was going down the (fortunately icy) runway backward. The equipment exited through the rear of the plane instead, and the pilot lived to fly another day.

Not recorded: whether he beat the shit out of the person who was supposed to secure the equipment.

late 2018--early 2019

Rudy gets wind that the Ukrainians are saying that the Obama administration tried to get them to meddle in the 2016 elections AND that Hunter Biden was doing dirty deals in Ukraine thanks to his corrupt dad.

Rudy starts investigating, and then:

*leak*

The Ukrainians reveal that he's planning to go there, it gets politicized in the US, and Rudy hangs up on them.

This summer:

Ukraine: "Hi, State Department, we're new, and we'd like to once and for fvcking all give you, absolutely free, this evidence we have that your precious Obama tried to USE us to sway your 2016 election and his old coot veep used your God-damn financial leverage against us so his son could do some dirty deals here."

Uncle Sam: "Why didn't you tell the DOJ?"

Ukraine: "What the fvck do you THINK we did? We tried to get on a fvcking plane to meet with someone but your stupid embassy in Kiev dragged its feet on the visa approvals. So we hired a certain famous US attorney to hand-deliver a package to the US attorney in SDNY and never heard a word back!"

Uncle Sam: "Hmm, okay. We'll send you Rudy."

Ukraine: "Great! The famous Rudy! Listen, maybe we can patch things up with him, show you guys we'd like to make deals and such."

And that's where we stand. Does William Barr have NOTHING to do with the SDNY for God's sake? Talk is now that the Ukrainian parliament is going to assemble a package to give to the US Congress since our DOJ isn't interested in...what's that "J" stand for? 554 When I was young, I did stupid shit because I too young and inexperienced to know better which often led to calamitous results which I now review with the benefit of hindsight as humorous and formative.

In my middle third, I applied the wisdom of my past and avoided glaring potholes to ease the travails of my life and achieve greater comfort and security.

But now, as I enter my final third, I sometimes contemplate if I should not follow deer paths which lead invariably into uncharted territories because the potentiality of failure seems preferable at times to the certainty of comfort and success.

Is it insanity to crave the uncertainty of potential of failure over the mild comfort of predetermined outcome?

560 I'll also add: Just like Montreal speaks a version of French. But the French consider Montreal/Quebec French to be muddy or dirty, and look down on it. In non-earth shattering news, the French are snobs to even other French-speaking peoples.

That is pretty vague though an
interesting question. If you are investing in stocks at a late age, I
would say go for the sure thing. If you feel your life has been
measured out with coffeespoons, and adventure is what you laek, then go
for it it if the risk is only to yourself.

Something
you see when people get into investing is the idea that the only
possible risk is wild fluctuations in their investments. The risk
almost everyone discounts is that you can take too few risks and in the
end never reach your goals. Yes a crazy net stock can be risky and
too many can be a problem. But if you only invest in rock solid bonds,
your risk is that you will never reach your goals or even have a chance.

Being too conservative is as risky as
being too loose with your investments. The key is to come up with a
plan to achieve what you want and do the best you can. There are still
no guarantees no matter your choice. But in general I would go for the
sure success over the risk of failure. The key is why are you taking
the risk and how important that is to you. In the end, none of us get
out unscathed.

I spent some time in Newfoundland, not far from Port au port, and it didn't take too long to get the hang of it. Mostly, Newfie English is derived from Irish English. And there are some unique words, a Jackytar is a Micmac Indian who migrated to Newfoundland to fill the void left by the Beothuks, who went extinct.

Predestination vs free will is one of the eternal questions. Bhuddists believe if you fuck up, you will be reborn, but at a lower station in life. The Matrix presupposes predestination. How else can The Oracle predict your future, up to a choice?

I like the take in Terminator II via Sarah Connor -- -- "The whole thing goes: The future's not set. There's no fate but what we make for ourselves." Terminator 2: Judgment Day

572 i read long ago that the Quebecois are often more militant about the French language than the French themselves. The French are more open to English idioms than the Canadians. One example is when they say "weekend" The French normally say "Le Weekend" while the Quebecois say "Le fin de semaine".

I am not saying the French are not snobby but that they often has less to prove. Sometimes the far flung redoubts are the most militant. Same reason why Brits in Gibraltar act more British than those in the UK.

591 I note the increasing use of the term "neo-liberal" by people of the Chomsky school and other Leftists as a way to confuse and deflect from the disastrous failures of progressivism. Like the Bolsheviks would attack the Mensheviks. To this hardcore pseudo-intellectual Left, Obama would be considered a "neo-liberal." Just more gobbledygook to explain away the total dead-end of Leftism, and to cry for ideological purity.
