145 Hi Anna.

I'm at home packing up my possessions. I took a break to watch a good pre-Code Edward G. Robinson movie about tabloid journalism ruining innocent lives, called "Five Star Final. It's melodramatic, but I don't mind; melodrama is just concentrated emotion if it's handled correctly.

Whole lotta drinking and smoking in this flick. It was made a few months before Prohibition was repealed. "God gives us heartache, and the Devil gives us whiskey," says Robinson's character before he downs another shot.

166 Among the living legends I've seen, probably the greatest was seeing Rush on their final tour.

For the encore, they re-created their early high school gymnasium-playing days, with a real basketball hoop and the stage decorated like a gym. They wore 70s clothes and broke out the double-necks and played a mini-set of the early stuff.

I just sat there thinking, is there any more memorable way to go out than, after an already killer set, to take it back to the beginning like that for a little final reminiscing with the fans. It was awesome in the truest sense of the word.

185 I'm glad Kris pointed out that it looks like his head is on backwards. (Hello, Spaceballs.) That was my first impression.

The artist's skill is obvious and less wooden than other painters of that period. This reminded me of the Mona Lisa with the bold figure in the foreground and receding countryside as the background. The delicate flower against the very masculine figure seems odd but there may be a meaning I'm missing. The thumb ring, in the same way, seems odd as well but thumb rings always look awkward to me.

The artist's Wiki page has a copy of a Solario sketch in colored chalk which I think indicates his talent more than the oils.

242 185 I'm glad Kris pointed out that it looks like his head is on backwards.

Posted by: JTB at September 17, 2019 10:05 AM (bmdz3)

Things we would consider effeminate today were considered manly back then. This was the height of the Renaissance, a period of rediscovered Humanism. They endevered to appreciate the beauty and experience of life and its pleasures--nature and its beauties, for example. A delicate flower juxtaposed with a specimen of manliness could show that this man is a truly of the Renaissance zeitgeist.

Also, could be a subtle idea of his care for a delicate flower of the human female kind. Flowers also represented female sexuality. He could be in the market. That it's a carnation, he may be advertising that he's just not in it for the sex. I doubt it, but that's could be what he wants to portray.

as to the whining Tulsi Gabbard was doing, that should pretty much eliminate her in the eyes of anyone on the conservative side here, as some have. Trump hasn't actually made any moves yet with response to the situation, other than to hold talks with our allies in the region. Something will probably happen, but we don't know what.

But Tulsi has shown once again that even though she may not be as idiotically liberal as some other candidates, she's still a whore for Iran, and always has been. Just like Valerie Jarrett.

grammie, In 1991 I covered for our local newspaper a concert with Vince Gill, Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks. Trisha had just released her first hit. I got to interview Vince after his part of the show. The nicest guy on the planet and so incredibly talented. I love his singing but his skill on guitar is beyond outstanding. It was a horribly hot and humid day and he just kept graciously answering reporters' questions.

Look for duets with Vince and Alison Krauss on Youtube. Sheer heavenly music.

BTW, Trisha had recently released her first hit and I got to interview her as well. She was a sweetheart.

Garth put on a great show but wasn't available for interviews. He had to run to another concert and his bus pulled out right after the concert.

Thompson brought a support clown to his firing and has become a viral sensation.

According to media reports in New Zealand, Thompson suspected he was facing the axe at the advertising agency where he worked. He was told he could bring a "support person" and decided to bring a support clown.

The New Zealand Herald reported "Joe The Clown," a professional clown, by the way, made balloon animals as Thompson was told he was being let go, while making a suitably mournful face.

The clown mimed crying as Thompson's employers slid the paperwork across the table and made a balloon unicorn and poodle to lighten the mood.

We should note that Trump has NOT jumped and done anything at all yet, except talk to regional allies. If Bolton were still in the administration, missiles would be flying.

In looking at what's going on, I think great caution is warranted because it is clear that Iran *Wants* to provoke us into launching an attack. Why? What is their game? They keep pushing and pushing, started with shooting down the naval drone, mining the tankers, now this - but what is their game? Why are they trying so hard?

When your enemy is trying to push you into doing something and you don't really understand why (I admit I can't fathom Iran's strategy here) then Caution is to be greatly advised. My guess is that they believe America doesn't have it in itself anymore for either regime change or winning a war, so the kind of conflict that they're hoping to incite is one they can manage.

The other side, again, I guess, is PR. If America puts boots on the ground in Iran for whatever reason, Europe may be more likely to side with Iran, robbing the US of any sort of international support for the measure. This could feed into the US getting into a fight it has no intention of winning, combined with increased sympathy from European allies (who are, perhaps, telling Iran behind the scenes just this) and Iran could end up with minimal military loses but increased freedom after the aborted American actions.

I guess.

I've watched the first two episodes of Country Music, the Ken Burns documentary. Absolutely fascinating, and I've learned a ton. It is very even handed in which is simply states and shows photos of minstrels shows, complete with all the black face, but describes the shows in how they contributed to the furthering of bringing black and African music into the genre from the beginning. It doesn't shy away from discussing the singing brought by slaves, but it doesn't freak out about it. It matter of fact explains how it is part of country and especially gospel.
The photos, recorded music from the 20s and 30s and the occasional movie reels are amazing. The episode tonight will start at the end of the 30's and the WWII era. I highly recommend it, NO COMMERCIALS , the two hours are shown straight through on PBS. Additionally, the documentary cuts in to current and elderly country stars who quietly describe what they have been told by those passed on about the eras. Roseann Cash and Merle Haggard's interviews are great.

There is simply no way you can let all the direct action Iran had been taking either by themselves or through proxies. No response to the attack on the Saudis will invite escalating violence that's going to finally lead to more people getting killed. I prefer not to get to that point and strike first. It's going to be which targets and what capabilities we take out, not whether we go or not. I applaud Trump's patience on these matters, but I'm wondering whether he has the guts for any action at all. So far he's been all hat, no cowboy.

I strongly suspect that Iran is following advice given to them by John Kerry and Valerie Jarrett. And the news out this morning is that oil prices are falling because oil production will be restored quickly. That means that this was NOT a majorly destructive attack - which means that it must have been done for Political reasons, not military or economic reasons. 455 Oil flow wasn't interrupted because the Saudis have at least 30 days of supply they immediately tapped into. There is still some pretty substantial battle damage, but they will repair it on a priority basis within the window. The real intent was to show Saudis weakness, and mostly give them a big financial hit- which they did. The ARAMCO IPO was even delayed, but frankly this was the last good excuse.

You will, and should see Iran and their proxies take some hits, with our support. We know where the ordnance was launched from and how it was accomplished. Right now the Saudis are putting their C-RAM systems in place and, if I were a betting man, I say the Iranians get some type of payback in the next 72 hours. Take away the 16th century cap and hairstyle and plunk a Roman helmet on that head. Steely blue eyes that say I've seen a thing or two.
That why I hate those paintings titled "Portrait of a Man'' or "Portrait of a "Woman". I like to know who they were and what they did.

459 Here's the entire concert, I think. Giddens appears at 6:00, and 46:00, the latter is a knock-out rendition of 'Crazy'. http://tinyurl.com/yy9dep9u

462 I did a google of Andrea Solario.. a lot of his male portraits look like this guy!

And he seems to have had a fascination with the beheading of St John the Baptist.. he painted several different version of it!

463 It would be really fun if Israel bombed Iran in response to the Saudi attack.

Just mix things up a bit.
Posted by: TexasDan at September 17, 2019 11:05 AM (hr5kG)

Israel won't do the hit, but you can be sure the two erstwhile enemies will be sharing intelligence , logistical support, etc.
Both have very good reasons to hate Iran

465 I got it. Solario and his assistants would paint some of Portraits, but not the whole thing, and stockpile them. No face, no hands, etc. Guido's friends and Guido come in, says he just got made, and they'd like to commission a portrait. Solario would say sure, have a seat here. He draws a few sketches, tells him to come back tomorrow. Guido does, and Solario has Linebacker #4 on the easel with the face sketched in. Nothing quite matches, but, when he's done, yeah, that's Guido! Nice!
