Raphael Julius.jpg

Portrait of Pope Julius II
Raffaello Sanzio da Urbino

Raphael is one of my favorites, but I had never seen this until recently, and boy am I glad I went looking. When I think of Raphael I think of grand paintings, but this is relatively small...only about one meter high. According to the history it was ahead of its time for portraiture, especially that of popes, and laid the groundwork for the next few centuries of papal portraits. Not bad for a guy who died in his mid-thirties!

This topic has been extensively discussed by the Central Committee and the subcommittees for art and truth. Pictorial or other representative art of trees or tree products within a painting do NOT make it art. This decision is final, and binding.

61 The juxtaposition of the red and green are lovely. Usually these colors are hard to combine because they are compliments and really do clash violently if not done right. Adding black to each of the colors deadens their individual vividness, allowing the red in his costume to come forward. Also notice how the red and the green areas are very close in size. White is used to balance them out and rest the eye. The composition is quite simple and minimalist. Very nice.

109 Raphael was patronized by Julius II and Leo X. This rather honest portrait of the martial pope in his later, disappointed days is rather excellent. I liked Raphael's characterization as the smug, self-conscious artist who's got it made in "The Agony and the Ecstasy". (It was tweaked to contrast him to Michaelangelo more, but hey, it works.) When Raphael died Leo X was so distraught he took a vacation to cope and ignored all news for a while....including reports of an uppity German ordained monk who was criticizing his fundraising efforts.

112 Past 100, so OT.

A family friend passed yesterday. He was one of the good ones.

Rudy was one of the most amazing men that I ever met. A German who was born in Holland, he grew up under Nazi occupation in WWII.

He later worked for Cummings Diesel and moved to Israel and was responsible for retrofitting their Sherman tanks. Rather than flee Israel during the 1973 Yom Kippur War, Rudy accompanied Israeli Army Tank Commanders to the Golan Heights where the Israeli commander of his tank was killed and Rudy returned fire on Syrian forces.

The tanks retrofitted for the IDF played a major part in Israel's miraculous victory.
May the memory of Rudy Gerdes be blessed.

R.I.P. Rudy. You will be missed. Thank you for your friendship.

The portrait was made towards the end of Julius's reign and life, when Fortune had turned against him and he was being hammered by Spanish and Imperial armies intent on reversing his earlier gains. 138 Thank you for selecting this! Raphael's portraits are some of his greatest art. His portrait of Balthasar Castiglione is the archetype of the Renaissance man. On the other hand, his portrait of Pope Leo X ("God has given us the papacy. Now let us enjoy it!") reveals the man's corruption; and the cardinals d'Medici and Rossi, also depicted in the portrait, look like a pair of Mafiosi - which, in effect, they were. I am amazed the Raphael wasn't punished for his candor; I guess that, like Goya in later centuries, he could veil truth with just enough flattery to make it palatable to his subjects.

189 179 Red Letter Media has had a video taken down by Warner Brothers or YouTube or Google for reviewing a 30-year old movie (Gremlins 2). The reason? Copyright violation for showing clips from the 1990 film during the review. The speculated reason? A CEO character from the movie (Mr. Clamp) is favorably compared to President Trump.

When the Landsknechts sacked Rome in 1527 due to back pay issues, they used the statue for artillery target practice until it toppled. Then the statue was broken up and recast as a bronze cannon named "Julia".

They paid homage to the Past in their works over and over, and never stopped studying it. Some saw their work as a challenge to be met or surpassed, but they still respected them. It was Modernism's mistake to write off the Past Masters as being in the past and no longer relevant. That they had nothing more to learn from them. It's a testament as to how Democrats broke the Court, and made it totally political. Like toothpaste out of the tube, it can't be put back.

Up until the fight over Bork, it was accepted on both sides that a President had the right to have his confirmation affirmed, UNLESS the nominee was totally unqualified. Political considerations were held to be out of bounds. Bork changed all that, but in 1993, the GOP Senate thought they could just ignore that and go back to the way things were.

We don't know any of the details, of course - but we should note that ALL International Diplomacy between leaders of any two countries involves an "unidentified "promise" to an unnamed "world leader" in exchange for an unknown action or object."

That's why Diplomacy is done confidentially. If this were not so, then it would be conducted on the front page of the newspapers - and no agreements would ever be made.

The only times when this would be highly objectionable is if the gain being sought is personal, and not related to national policy goals. Like when Hillary shook down foreign governments and got "donations" to her foundation.

I can't really blame the Modernists for feeling this way though. They knew WWI was going to happen and couldn't stop it. When it did happen, it was such an apocalypse that they were looking for anything to make sense of the aftermath. They thought Traditionalism was the root cause of WWI and so thought that the only way to prevent another one, to heal, and to rebuild was to do away with the culture that caused it. It was very reactionary and short-sighted, but I understand it.

Then it happened again. It had to be devastating.

My prediction. Liawatha or Sanders will actually win the primary, but the power brokers in the DNC will rubber stamp Biden, just like they did with Hillary in '16. This will piss off the commie antifa left wing of the party and they will stay home. Biden's ensuing campaign will, ironically, look alot like Hillary's, with him stumbling and gaffing his way through while everybody questions his health and mental acuity, while his handlers try to limit his public appearances to minimize the damage. The media screams all the while at the top of its lungs how Biden is up by 300% in all polls and is a lock, and turns up its anti Trump propaganda to eleventy.
Trump wins easily on election day. Yawn.

Good.

Some lib asked on Twitter what the Founders would think of Trump trying to hide his tax returns. They had it pointed out to them that the Founders would be horrified at the concept of a tax return.

The one land border is supposedly the sticking point.
Posted by: Blue Hen at September 19, 2019 11:02 AM (AtcKV)

The reason it's a sticking point is because in the agreement which ended the conflict with the IRA, the British Government agreed that there would be no hard, controlled border between Northern Ireland and the rest. Putting border controls in means ripping up that old agreement, which both parts of Ireland are very opposed to.

Which is why I say, Ireland has to go if Brexit is to succeed. Probably Scotland too. End the UK, just let it be England again.

Putting border controls in means ripping up that old agreement, which both parts of Ireland are very opposed to.

Then keep the agreement, maintain the existing border and let people go shopping as they please, North or south. If it ever becomes a conduit for EU refugee dumping, dump them back on the Eire side.

Or re-write the agreement. Neither North or South want a resumption of the previous state of affairs. Or scrap the agreement, and let Ulster and the Republic sort it out.

and of course there would always be someone quietly promoting this, taking baskets full of Donations from the Sinful, and promising them Absolution for their Guilty Souls.

Totally down with the notion of taxing barter goods, however.

I've come to the conclusion that the Founders were far from in agreement on just how centralized the govt was supposed to look, agreed to disagree long enough to get something ratified, then resumed the fight once that was done.

372 Adding black to each of the colors deadens their individual vividness, allowing the red in his costume to come forward.
Oil painters generally don't use black right out of the tube to tone down the vibrancy of the hues. Especially during the Renaissance, the black pigments derived from burnt ivory, soot from ashes, or charred grape vines would impart a dirty look to any color they mixed with. Usually the way to tone down a primary color is to mix it with its complement.
It does look like Raphael swished some black around in the green field behind the Pope. I'd have to see this IRL though to discern what pigment he used. Because imo those swishes do look dirty.

Or to mix a complementary color yourself and then gradually introduce this into the main color.
If you have oil paints handy you can try this out. (The rule doesn't apply strictly to acrylic paint because they are a horse of a different color.)
