The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

"Problems are manifesting in all three dimensions of the energy industry triangle: climate protection, the security of supply and economic efficiency," McKinsey & Company

Quote II

“The ELCA will also continue to accompany and advocate for immigrants who are seeking asylum and do what we can to see that undocumented immigrants are aware of, understand, and live into their rights under U.S. law.” Rev. William Gafkjen

Quote III

“The thing that has been lacking in this debate has been an earnest and real conversation on debt and deficits and government spending, and I find it astounding to watch the number of Democratic debates that I’ve seen and no mention, no conversation on where we’re going with regard to debt,” Former Gov. Mark Sanford (R-SC)

Quote IV

“The 14th Amendment of our Constitution actualized what many of the Founders wanted, promoting equal protection under the law for all Americans,” “If I could, I would end the antiquated electoral college. Twice in the last 20 years the popular vote winner was denied the presidency. This is an assault on our democratic principles, where the dictum should hold true: one person, one vote.” Constitutional expert Barbara Streisand

Quote V

“The way we look at the business is tied to some very basic fundamentals that haven’t changed for decades, if not hundreds of years. Exxon CEO Darren Woods

Quote VI

“That is kind of shocking, with all the procedures the banks have set up, checking and double-checking and triple-checking, there`s no way anybody gets away with that stuff,” Nate Weaver

How long before the usual suspects blame this on us? Mass shooting reported in the Netherlands.

According to Google, that translates as . . .

In a shooting incident on the #heimerstein in #Dordrecht, several victims were killed. We are present with many people and investigate what has happened

From the Associated Press . . .

Police in the Netherlands have tweeted that three people have been killed and one other person has been seriously wounded in a shooting in a residential neighborhood in the city of Dordrecht.

Police spokesman Wim Hoonhout has told The Associated Press that “It seems like a family incident.” No further details of what happened Monday have been immediately released.

Just because you are unsavory, it doesn't mean that academia won't take your money and hang with you. Just ask Joi Ito.

New documents show that the M.I.T. Media Lab was aware of Epstein’s status as a convicted sex offender, and that Epstein directed contributions to the lab far exceeding the amounts M.I.T. has publicly admitted.

Update: On Saturday, less than a day after the publication of this story, Joi Ito, the director of the M.I.T. Media Lab, resigned from his position. “After giving the matter a great deal of thought over the past several days and weeks, I think that it is best that I resign as director of the media lab and as a professor and employee of the Institute, effective immediately,” Ito wrote in an internal e-mail. In a message to the M.I.T. community, L. Rafael Reif, the president of M.I.T., wrote, “Because the accusations in the story are extremely serious, they demand an immediate, thorough and independent investigation,” and announced that M.I.T.’s general counsel would engage an outside law firm to oversee that investigation.

The M.I.T. Media Lab, which has been embroiled in a scandal over accepting donations from the financier and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, had a deeper fund-raising relationship with Epstein than it has previously acknowledged, and it attempted to conceal the extent of its contacts with him. Dozens of pages of e-mails and other documents obtained by The New Yorker reveal that, although Epstein was listed as “disqualified” in M.I.T.’s official donor database, the Media Lab continued to accept gifts from him, consulted him about the use of the funds, and, by marking his contributions as anonymous, avoided disclosing their full extent, both publicly and within the university. Perhaps most notably, Epstein appeared to serve as an intermediary between the lab and other wealthy donors, soliciting millions of dollars in donations from individuals and organizations, including the technologist and philanthropist Bill Gates and the investor Leon Black. According to the records obtained by The New Yorker and accounts from current and former faculty and staff of the media lab, Epstein was credited with securing at least $7.5 million in donations for the lab, including two million dollars from Gates and $5.5 million from Black, gifts the e-mails describe as “directed” by Epstein or made at his behest. The effort to conceal the lab’s contact with Epstein was so widely known that some staff in the office of the lab’s director, Joi Ito, referred to Epstein as Voldemort or “he who must not be named.”

And yet you and I are the deplorables.

Speaking of unsavory, One America News Network sues Rachel Maddow, NBC and Comcast for defamation.

One America News Network (OANN) filed a $10 million defamation lawsuit Monday against MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow.

OANN is suing Maddow, MSNBC, Comcast Corporation and NBC Universal for defamation, alleging Maddow “maliciously and recklessly” went after the network by suggesting it is a Russian state propaganda outlet, the complaint reads, according to Law and Crime. Maddow said that OANN “really, literally is Russian propaganda” on “The Rachel Maddow Show” in July.

Former Rep. Robert F. O'Rourke once again displays his complete ignorance. We cannot remove every illegal alien but Americans will gladly hand over everyone of their firearms to the government.

“No. I don’t see the law enforcement going door to door. I see Americans complying with the law. I see us working with gun owners, non-gun owners, local, county, state, federal law enforcement to come up with the best possible solution. I have yet to meet an owner of an AR-15 who thinks it’s OK that we have these kind of mass killings in this country,” he said.

Just because I think the mass shootings are horrible doesn't mean I'm going to hand over my AR-15. And as a matter of fact, I might buy another one or three.

Until today I had never heard of Sophie Salmon. But, I admire this young person's grit.

A University of Wisconsin-River Falls campus official told a freshman student that police would be notified if she refused to get a permit before rolling a "free speech ball" around a grassy area of the public campus.

Sophie Salmon is a freshman at UW-River Falls who is trying to start a Turning Point USA chapter at her new school. As part of her recruitment efforts, Salmon inflated a six-foot “free speech ball” on Thursday. The ball was designed to serve as a platform for students to write whatever they pleased, but it also attracted the attention of university administrators.

After less than half an hour of rolling the ball around campus lawns, Salmon was confronted by UW-River Falls Conference and Contract Services Manager Kristin Barstad outside River Falls' main building, University Center. The official informed the student that she lacked the proper permissions needed to exercise her free speech on public university property and needed to take the ball elsewhere.

Big t*ts. Small to non-existent brain.

“Baywatch” actress Pamela Anderson shared a brilliant idea online about the entire world being allowed to vote in the U.S. presidential election.

As if the anti-globalists don’t have enough to worry about.

“I believe Everyone in the world should be able to vote for the US president, because it has an impact on all of us …” Anderson tweeted.

A French's solider view of a US solider.

And combat? If you have seen Rambo you have seen it all - always coming to the rescue when one of our teams gets in trouble, and always in the shortest delay. That is one of their tricks: they switch from T-shirt and sandals to combat ready in three minutes. Arriving in contact with the enemy, the way they fight is simple and disconcerting: they just charge! They disembark and assault in stride, they bomb first and ask questions later - which cuts any pussyfooting short.

Hoping and praying that America's treasure returns from that hell hole sooner rather than later.

Mexican drug gang. Brutal, judge, jury and penalty enforcer.

The man, in his 30s, was attacked in revenge for allegedly raping a woman in Mexico City, Mexico, last month.

The gang released a graphic video of the moment the man was mauled by the pitbull terrier as a warning to other sex attackers, authorities believe.

He was stripped naked, handcuffed and held to the ground by five men before the dog was let loose.

If I lived anywhere near Ft. Worth, TX The Alpine Range would be a regular stop for me. An ammo bar, awesome.

The Alpine Shooting Range of Fort Worth, Texas, is now offering ammunition by the pound and has gotten in some good shots at Walmart for the retail giant’s recent surrender to anti-gun forces.

Alpine, a full-service gun store and range in business for 50 years, opened up a new ammo bar and trolled the mega-retailer on social media days after Walmart announced it was discontinuing the sale of ammunition for handguns and short barrel rifles. The move by the retail chain has been mocked and scorned by gun owners throughout the country.

I certainly hope they were charged an inordinate amount to be rescued. "Ship with Climate Change Warriors caught in ice, Warriors evacuated"

Arctic tours ship MS MALMO with 16 passengers on board got stuck in ice on Sep 3 off Longyearbyen, Svalbard Archipelago, halfway between Norway and North Pole. The ship is on Arctic tour with Climate Change documentary film team, and tourists, concerned with Climate Change and melting Arctic ice. All 16 Climate Change warriors were evacuated by helicopter in challenging conditions, all are safe. 7 crew remains on board, waiting for Coast Guard ship assistance.

Something is very wrong with Arctic ice, instead of melting as ordered by UN/IPCC, it captured the ship with Climate Change Warriors.

A Massachusetts man is facing charges in Connecticut after authorities say he was caught with five pounds of marijuana and other drugs inside his car.

Police in Wilton, Connecticut stopped a car on Route 7 around 11:15 a.m. Thursday after officers spotted the driver texting while driving, police said.

A hard working and caring teenager is our Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

Finn Blazer, a pupil at Thorpe St Andrew School, was out on his paper round in November last year when he came across the unconscious woman in the driveway at one of the houses on his route.

The now 14-year-old called for an ambulance and waited with the woman, who lived alone, carrying out chest compressions for 20 minutes until paramedics arrived - which he had been taught in primary school.

I'm happy, when we first started dating she didn't like boating. I eventually sold my share of a boat I had on Lake Erie. Now she likes it, we have a pontoon, I have my fishing boat and she has her Aqua Lark. Upgrade the seats or the whole pontoon, she'll like it more. We're on a 1300 acre lake rather than Lake Erie though. Thought is to eventually go to bigger lake south, or possible Florida Keys or USVI.

123 Thanks, MisHum, for another great ONT.

Watching Michael Mann's very flawed but very fascinating 1983 film "The Keep," which will probably never get a Blu-Ray release because both Mann and Paramount hate it and continue to fight over it.

Mann's original cut was over three hours, and I'm sorry, but you can't sustain "dread" over three hours. It just becomes wearisome rather than dreadful. Paramount cut it into a version a bit over two hours, and apparently no one liked that version either because it was a box office bomb. Original novelist F. Paul Wilson also hated it, so count me in as one of the very few fans.

And yes, as mentioned, it has flaws. It's got flaws left and right. Let's start with the obvious: in WW2, a monster is killing Nazis. WHO DO WE VOTE FOR?!

But: and here's why I mention the film at all. At around the 45 minute mark, Molesaar, the villain, makes his first appearance.

And it's honestly one of the most gorgeous scenes I've seen in ANY film, in ANY genre. It just is one of those "chills down the spine" moments, as we see the cloud creature assemble itself to the strains of Tangerine Dream's version of Thomas Tallis' "Gloria."

It is, as mentioned, break-taking. And I'd love to know how they did it, in a pre-digital age, after effects supervisor Wally Veevers died midway through production.

Recommended for that one sequence alone, though there are other things in it worthy of mention.

That's interesting because "The Hunt For Red October" was the best adaptation of Clancy's books Hollywood has done. The rest were mangled horribly. My favorite Clancy book "Red Storm Rising" will never be made into a Hollywood movie for which I am thankful. "The Cardinal of the Kremlin" would make for a fantastic movie but for Hollywood being retarded evil crapweasals, so I'm thankful they skipped that one too.

181 "The Keep" is not a perfect movie, or even a good one. It has its high and low points, like most movies.

The scene I mentioned, Molesaar rescuing the girl, would be perfect to snip and put in a time capsule. Honestly, if you can find a way to see that one scene (it used to be on YouTube) it's worth your time.

The scene where Molesaar sabotages his own plan--"Kill your daughter, okay?"--should have been different. "Help her understand" or something.

The movie wants to cast Molesaar and Glaaken as "evil" and "good," respectively, but I think it would have worked much better as "warring factions, neither good, nor evil, but controlling the other though winning a contest."

But what do I know.

Thanks again to MisHum for putting up with me. Off to some semblance of sleep.

What's this story that's lighting up the leftysphere about a former Russian spy (worked for the CIA) now living in Washington D.C.?

Well, where else would an ex-Russian spy go?

Anyway, Ken Dilanian thinks he's hot dirt because he found the guy out and knocked on his door. Then some US guys in a van came along and said "Who are you, go away."

Oooohhh, Kenda Starr!

And the NY Times chimes in that the guy gave the CIA all kinds "insight" into Putin, which convinced the genius CIA that Putin tried to get Trump elected.

The left is all panting over it.

We finished up the New River fire yesterday morning.
That country gets slicked off about every year, but the fine fuel loading off down in the breaks was heavy and just kept sneaking out wherever it could. We pounded that fire with tankers and still had trouble.

247 DB, there's still plenty of time left in CA's wildfire season, as you know. Next two months are the historic high activity period, I think. Just over a year ago there was some fire excitement rightcha here, 1/2 mile away, down below by the interstate. Coulda been even more exciting, but air attack was good [reservoir 2 minutes away, constant rotation by 2 Hueys and a SkyCrane].

Rousing finale was runs by 2 S-2s - I didn't think the topography would allow it. First run, plane emerges from the smoke, flying right at us on the valley rim, you could see the crew up front, it probably went over us at under 2OO feet. Outstanding and fun. Whole neighborhood/pocket canyon was watching from their backyards - so as activity was dying down I yelled "remember, Blue Angels are always last!". Many got it. Quite an air show.

It was pretty clear to me that some inversion had happened. MSM sniffs out sooper secret spy in hiding from Putin and...KNOCKS ON HIS DOOR TO INQUIRE WHETHER... etc facepalm.

US law enforcement intervenes and tells them to kindly get lost.

Moral of story: The CIA pried him out of Russia because Trump was going to out him. Oh and also (this is where I knew we had entered pure fantasy), the CIA had used him to develop their dead-certain 100% belief that Putin strong-armed the election for Trump.

Incongruously, (Trump's) federal law enforcement is protecting him.

And the MSM is here to ferret him out.

Timing on modern x86 CPUs is arcane and subtle. No rhyme or reason to it, seems like. Well, there is, but it's beyond me.

I got obsessed with this the past few nights playing around. I'd never written any assembler for 64-bit, and thought I'd learn. So I was playing around. It used to be easy to beat a compiler, and it still is sometimes.

But one little routine, the compiler blew me away, and I got obsessed with why.

I just finally beat the compiler, and have no idea why, really.

Up until about the 486, timings were very deterministic and trivial. This sequence will take N clock ticks. Now, with pipelining, out-of-order execution, branch prediction, speculative execution, it's all a complex mess.

That's the difference between cortiscosteroids, like prednisone and similar, which are powerful anti-inflammatories, vs anabolic steroids, like testosterone.

307 Hi nurse!

Yes, I went to the lightshow at Montlake. Went on my brother's boat, he just brought it down from Anacortes and has it in Lake Union.

They wouldn't start the game until 30 minutes after the last lightning strike. Every time another bolt hit, crowd groaned, standing in the inside corridor.

Little LCD and girlfriend, and a close family friend couple were with us. The boat shuttle wouldn't run, so they left and brought and I stayed to take the boat back, After about 90 minutes waiting, they Ubered back to the car.

5 minutes later, they announced the continuation of the fame, 11 minutes left in the first quarter.

Little LCD was pissed, he kept texting, but drove so he had to go.

The crowd that stayed had a great time, up to the last minute.

We got ready to go after Cal got to the 3 yard line, got an immediate shuttle.
Could have been waiting a long time otherwise, there were only 2 shuttles left.

308 98 Assuming it was a serious question...

The Hmong are an ethnic minority in Laos. The CIA & U.S. military recruited many Hmong to assist us in Viet Nam-- as scouts, etc.

After the war ended, many Hmong were re-settled in the U.S. for their own safety. The communists considered them traitors.

Posted by: Legally Sufficient at September 09, 2019 10:45 PM (rubPk)

Back in the day, the Hmong were known as the Montagnards (from the French experience in The Land of Bad Things) or 'yards in casual conversation.
They were the mountain people in Laos whom we recruited to fight the VC and the NVA. They have a warrior ethic and although small are very tough people. The lowland Vietnamese discriminated against them for centuries and when the Vietnamese and lowland Laotians went communist it was no big trick to recruit the Montagnards to fight them. The 'yards hated the Vietnamese and communists just added to the reasons to hate them.
DuckDuckGo for General Vang Pao and check out his efforts to return to Laos to kick out the Commies. Not sure if he really cared about taking over the country. I get the vibes that he just wanted to kill commies.
The 'yards were/are loyal and respected fighters.

There are groups in California, French Guiana, and Minnesota (IIRC) who escaped Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia after we pulled out in '75.

Legend has it that descendents of early American Special Forces teams still exist in the mountains of Laos. The teams became members of the Hmong families and never came back. See Project White Star and Colonel Bull Simmons.

My nephew married a Hmong. My wife asked her who are the Hmong? The young lady with a perfectly straight face replied, "We're just a peaceful people who no longer have a home." I would have appreciated a beverage warning before she made that statement.

Some of the younger generation in California have taken to organized ("gang related") car theft.
They are good at it.
Unfortunately, some die due to gang related activities.

The first generation grow vegetables anywhere they live. The Hmong in FG grow the majority of vegetables produced in that country.

They have strong family ties. I like the ones I have known. Even the car thief who was later killed in a drive by.

Well, it's a thorny thicket, and I'm glad that I'm putzing with carburetors right now rather than code, but, were I to guess, I would guess that the compiler's convoluted, lengthier code is using instructions that, in the aggregate, execute more quickly.

Jeebers, I love opining about stuff that other people are doing. "Say, have you tried...."

It's almost impossible to write assembly as efficiently as a commercial (or FOSS) compiler for a modern CPU. The people who wrote the compiler are optimizing for things like pipeline bubbles and parallel instruction execution, which is something you're not going to be able to do without pretty intimate knowledge of the architecture.

But furthermore, f*** the joke our justice system has become. Democrats and bureaucrats decide who is above the law (the less american you are the better) and then go ruin lives over petty political garbage.
If prosecutors get "discretion" on what laws they want to enforce, against whom, and when, then i damn well get the same discretion as a jury member.
Hope others feel the same way. Just dont mention jury nullification during the selection process.

Another thing about optimizing compilers and timing loops is sometimes the damn thing will optimize everything away to nothing. :-)

It gets a little too smart for its own good. I was comparing function times, one in C and one in asm.

Well, the compiler noted that the C function results could be calculated at compile time, since the input was known. It thus optimized it all away. It ran the loop, but the loop was nothing.

The result was some ridiculously fast result. One then has to find a compiler switch to turn that off, or make changes so the compiler can't know the result and has to actually run the function.

I note that Bush and McCain are so pro-Saudi that I would rather have nothing to do with them. And Kerry and Obama are so pro-Iran that they might be in jail, in a saner world then this.

To what degree is American politics wagging the dog for the Shia Sunni split in the middle east? (And the fever-dream that Israel controls everything is even more ridiculous in this light.) If we could make oil barons (and drug lords for that matter) so poor that they can't buy up US politicians that would be great.

_________________

They actually have all sorts of rights in the U.S., which is very, very wrong.

Thanks to the Supreme Court case of Plyler v. Doe, they have the right to enroll their kids in our taxpayer-funded public schools and have them educated at our expense.

They also have the right to "free" (i.e., U.S. taxpayer-funded) treatment in our ER's (thanks to a stupid federal law known as EMTALA).

And of course they also have due process rights, Miranda rights, and all the other rights that U.S. citizens have in our judicial system.

And those are just their formal rights. They also have informal rights in many jurisdictions, such as the right not to be held on an ICE detainer, the right not to be arrested for certain crimes, the right not to be prosecuted for certain crimes, the right not to have lengthy sentences imposed (such as the illegal alien bank robber in MA whose judge gave him a sentence of less than one year for two armed bank robbery convictions, because the judge didn't want the illegal to be deported, which would have been required if he'd been sentenced to more than a 1-year term). And illegals also have the right not to file or pay state or federal income taxes, not to register or insure the vehicles they drive on our roads, and many, many other rights not afforded to mere U.S. citizens or legal residents.
