Gun Thread: Damn AutoCorrect! [Weasel]

pinky grip tester scaled.jpg
Scientific Thing What Measures Pinky Strength

Who among us hasn't been the victim of autocorrect? Although it can be helpful with the occasional typo, for those who make them, it can also be a nightmare when a word or two are unintentionally changed and completely alter the meaning of a sentence! Am I right?

Let's find out what the ever-loving Hell I'm talking about, shall we?

Last week, while thoughtfully composing the Gun Thread and carefully researching and triple fact checking the material, I wrote:

The fact is, the pinky must be allowed space to join the other fingers, because the pinky is very important and contributes much to your grip strength and it really matters a lot when shooting that your pinky is on the grip so please get a magazine with a pinky extension. Amen.

Well, as can happen to anyone, autocorrect changed that to:

The fact is, even with space to join the other fingers, the pinky doesn't really contribute much in terms of grip strength and it doesn't really matter if it's on the grip or not.

Boy did I ever feel stupid when I saw what happened! As you can imagine, the email was fast and furious, and as soon as the thread was over I had this waiting in my inbox from our pal Jimbro who wrote:

I'm an Orthopedic Surgeon and the small finger adds a lot to grip strength. Here is an article from the National Institutes of Health - US National Library of Medicine, regarding the contribution of the ulnar digits to grip strength.

Thanks for the correction, Doc Jimbro, even though it was totally the fault of autocorrect and in no way a result of my half-assing the job. And with that little unpleasantness out of the way, let's pick up where we left off last week!

*******

Grips Pt. Dos
So what happens when a gun just doesn't feel right in your hand? Say you're looking for a particular gun and find a great deal but as you pick it up you find your hand is too big or too small and it just feels awkward as shit? Do you pass up the great deal and look for something else? How about the larger calibers? Did you finally buy the 44 Mag snubbie you always wanted, but find the recoil makes it just too painful to shoot so you leave it in the gun safe?

No! No I say!!

I love the Smith & Wesson Model 10, but I'm convinced the original Magna grips were designed as a bad joke. To me, they're too small and feel funny. And not 'ha-ha' funny in a good way, either. Since I'm something of a purist when it comes to things I collect, I leave the Magna's on and just live with the fact that it's going to feel a little goofy when I shoot that particular gun. Same with the Remington Rand 1911A1 I own. I'm sure there are probably aftermarket grips available which might be more comfortable and ergonomically correct, but am I putting them on the pistol? Hell no. As long as I own it, it'll have the correct bakelite grips. These are guns that I shoot just for fun and I'm frankly more interested in the original aesthetics than getting a perfect fit.

It's a pretty simple matter to change the look and feel of a gun by changing the grips. Do you have giant cartoon hands and want pink Hello Kitty grips on your 44 Magnum? I'm sure you can find them. Two aftermarket grip manufacturers mentioned last week are Hogue and Pachmayr, and I have examples of each. I am a big fan of the rubbery Hogue Combats and have them on my daily carry pistol and also on a revolver I carry at the farm. Pachmayr makes a line of grips called the Decelerator which do a really good job of cushioning the recoil of large Magnum cartridges particularly during prolonged range sessions. Both are popular enough that in some cases they are offered as standard equipment by certain manufacturers.

Here are Hogue wrap-around grips on my carry pistol which add both the rubbery grippiness, but also fit my hand better than regular flat grips.

hogue combat kimber scaled.jpg
Hogue Wrap Around Grips

Here is a stock photo of the Pachmayrs. I like them for prolonged large magnum caliber range sessions, but they have more of a squishy 'gel' feeling. I'm sure this contributes to the cushioning, but some might find it a little strange at first.

pachmayer decelerator scaled.jpg
Pachmayr Decelerator Grips

Spend some time looking around at the manufacturer's websites linked above. They offer first rate products in just about any size, shape and style imaginable.

There are also a lot of companies making aftermarket grips in all price ranges and some are truly custom, where the maker will incorporate your own design and sizing requirements. I only mention the mass production examples I have used, Hogue and Pachmayer, but an internet search will return dozens of choices for smaller custom shops which can offer a tailored product. It pays to look around and find a shop that will really work on getting you what you want.

How about you all? Has anyone used a true custom grip manufacturer and what was your experience? Did you have them sized up or down, or was your modification in design only?

Concealed vs. Open Carry
A couple of nights ago, one of Mr. O' Spades' posts turned to a discussion of concealed versus open carry, and I rather brilliantly observed it might be interesting to continue that conversation tonight. As long as I have owned guns, Virginia has allowed open carry, however, there was a time when it was virtually impossible to get a concealed weapons permit in the Commonwealth. Remember Oliver North? I recall reading somewhere that during the Iran-Contra mess, even he wasn't allowed a permit, being unable to demonstrate a sufficient "need" to the courts. Sometime after that, it all changed and Virginia became a "shall issue" state.

Anyhoo, I carry concealed regularly, but I do not think I have ever openly carried, even though it has always been allowed. Carrying a weapon is a big responsibility and I can't think of a good reason to advertise the fact that I'm armed. At best it's likely to simply attract unwanted attention when I'd rather be blending in with the scenery. When I'm at my property in the country, I open carry when I'm working or riding around on the tractor but that's mostly for pest management and I'm not sure it counts because I'm the only person for a half mile in any direction.

So what do you think? Do you live in an open carry state and do you exersize that right, or do you prefer to carry concealed? Can you think of a scenario where you would want people around you to know you're armed?

Butt-Mart is Dead to Me
By now we've all heard Wal-Mart recently announced they were prohibiting open carry in their stores and also discontinuing the sale of certain ammunition. CVS, Walgreens and Kroger soon jumped on the bandwagon, prohibiting open carry in their stores. I will tell you I was never a frequent Wal-Marter to begin with, and I'm sure as hell not going to become one now. I think these are largely symbolic gestures in an attempt to be seen as doing something in the wake of the shooting at their El Paso store. Time will tell, but I cannot imagine this will sit well with their shoppers, but I also suspect the company will get away with it because for many people these stores are the only game in town now that they've run everyone else out of business.

What other actions could the company have taken in response to the shooting? How about nothing? How about something for the victims and the community as a whole like setting up a scholarship fund? I don't know, maybe they're doing those things too, but I think what they have done only emboldens the anti 2nd Amendment retards, while not accomplishing anything really significant. Besides offering the Board of Directors cover from the shrieking left, that is.

With so much gloomy bullshit in the news, how about a tiny ray of light? Our pal Winston, dreg of society sends us a report from Washington State, where all appears not to be lost!

I wanted to share these shots from the Kittitas, WA, county fair 4 H exhibit. There remains some sanity in the world, even out here. Good kids and there was an even larger display on bows and hunting. They did not mention a preference for long v cross bows. The fair also features re-enactors from the 9th and 10th Cavalry. Lots of detailed history and period weapons and gear. Good people doing an amazing job of education. Another gentleman had a display of his firearms, in a log cabin, on the grounds.

Thanks for sending this in Winston, dreg of society. It's nice to see there is still some hope!

16 I'm not going to be around for the gun thread tonight but I wanted to drop this in before I leave for the night.

Last week, talking about the Philly cell phone store shooting, I wrote:

180 But the good guy appears to put 3-4 *more* rounds into the bad guy as the latter is lying motionless on the ground [!]. No movement by the perp, but flashes clearly visible, trigger pulls, etc.

Unless I'm missing something, I think our good guy might have a problem.

Yeah, who does he think he is? A cop?

We've all seen video and read reports of cops who lose their sh*t and unprofessionally dump dozens of rounds into (or in the general direction of) a suspect. I don't apologize for my scorn for those cops or the system that far too seldom holds them accountable. But to slam all cops was tarring with too broad a brush and I do apologize for that.

I was mostly goofing around when I wrote that, but probably should have clarified the pinky doesn't add MUCH. To me it's a non-issue. Yeah, it feels odd when I'm at the range but doubt I'd notice if I were trying to shoot somebody.

Only the "icky" cartridges will get dropped, like handgun rounds.

Of course a .38 special isn't likely to kill you through a wall. Full-powered rifle ammo will.

Posted by: Weasel at September 08, 2019 07:14 PM (MVjcR)

27 Regardless of what the pinky contributes in terms of strength, a lot of shooters don't get anything out of it other than having it help them pull shots off to the side when they flinch.

It's not uncommon to see people shoot the compact pistols a little better than the full size pistols as a result, even if they don't like the grip. Example: G19 vs G17

Sight radius on the smaller pistols is a bigger issue than grip.

That said, unless I'm in the mountains I usually don't carry because most people here are civilized. We have some loony commie types here but they are keeping a low profile.
As for open carrying west of the mountains, except again, in the mountains, no way, even though it's a good idea, as you will be harassed by the cops and the whiny liberals will shit themselves raw. I was once threatened by some woman for smoking a cigar in public. She was going to call the cops.

This is why I don't have an issue with Kroger saying they ask people not open carry.

That's fine. It's their store, Michigan (and Ohio where they are based) are shall-issue states.

Michigan has open carry, but you can't do it and drive. A non-CPL holder would therefore have to get out, go to the trunk, unlock and load the weapon and holster it in the parking lot.

CPL holders can carry while driving, so you'd be moving your comfy, concealed pistol out in the open...why?

And don't get me started on the jerks who carry their SKS into the public library. I'm convinced they were paid by libs to pull that crap.

Back during my all-expense-paid tour of somewhat sunny Southeast Asia, I used to wrap the pistol grip with t-shirt strips to build it up to better fit my meathook. It was really useful even when soaking wet.

Some do. The H&K VP9 comes with three sizes each for the side panels and backstrap, so you have 27 possible grip configurations. They're plastic, but on a full-frame 9mm like that, it's very likely that a proper grip fit will do more for you than padding. Just like a well-adjusted sling and proper posture can reduce a rifle's felt recoil as much or more than a recoil pad.

Haven't seen the video, but from CPL class they told us to empty the weapon. Lethal force is lethal force. Don't be fancy, don't aim for the leg, just shoot until it stops moving.

Of course, it's one thing if you have a five-shot revolver. Emptying an extended mag may be a bit excessive.

Wally World is dead to me too.....bastids.

A note to SKS fans, check your bayonets. When these rifles came into the country, most had to have their bayonets reattached. Some were re-installed edge side up when extended when it should be the opposite. Both Chinese spike and Russian blade types.

Here is a website which explains it and how to check, with pictures.

Kroger is still on my good list because they told Moms Demand Something Or Other that no, they weren't going to go gun-free in all their stores, they were going to abide by the relevant statutes in the area for each store. It was a while ago, and I don't remember what the crisis of the day was, but I do remember that.

63 Doesn't add much?

Weasel, lay your forearm on the desk, palm up.
Now, let your view go from finger tips up to your elbow.
Make a tight fist and observe visually, as well as feeling, the muscle structure in your forearm and where your grip feels the strongest in your hand.

Or don't.

Posted by: teej at September 08, 2019 07:27 PM (gJ3Vg)

64 On the subject of grip strength, it isn't always obvious how best to grip. Perhaps deliberately gripping with the pinky is the smart thing to do?
When gripping a tennis racket the tendency is to grip it with the fist and it is actually most effective to focus on gripping with the ring finger, the rest follow.
Conversely, you can relax your whole body by relaxing your tongue.
The time you wasted reading this comment you can never get back.

Radar, that's one of the things I compared on my range trip yesterday. I'm not sure if the guy in the vid was flipping his safety off with his gun in the holster; it appeared very fluid like round in the chamber ready go, draw, shoot.
There is a slightly perceptible delay (for me) in thumbing a safety off.

It's the same logic as a revolver - one less thing to worry about.

One reason I prefer revolvers for carry is that they are simple and ready to go. No fuss, bang right there on the trigger pull.

That's what appealed me about the PPQ. Bang on demand, no fuss. Why complicate things?

Because a safety is just one more thing to deal with in a high stress situation. I can't imagine how much adrenaline would be pumping through me in a situation where I was sufficiently threatened to have to pull my gun. Yes, you can train past it but why do you need a safety in the first place? Keep your booger hook off the bang switch.

I think I get what you're saying. All guns are generally ergonomic, I think. To me the difference comes when the grip is too small and it feels like my fingers are too long. A slightly beefier grip usually solves the problem for me.

Yes I was in a Buttmart that very day and they had 3 Colt AR's in the case at a rediculous markdown price. I told them I was headed to housewares to get a plastic tote and would be right back to buy at least one. While I was gone, about 10 minutes, and having decided to buy all 3, they disappeared. A day that will live in infamy. I probably have bought 1K rds of assorted ammo in Buttmarts all over the US since there have been Buttmarts. Jimbo's test was flawed.
Splinting the little finger forward is completely counter to the dynamics of the hand and gripping.

When gripping, a the hand naturally curls with muscle, ligament and tendon in concert. By artificially restraining the little finger forward the coordination and orientation of the other three fingers is completely askew rendering their function much less than normal.

114 I noticed the CMP store isn't listing that inexpensive surplus ammo for the Garand. Without getting into a political discussion, I think the anti 2A will attack through access to ammo. I recently picked up 1,000 150 grain bullets for Garand reloading. Hornady FMJ-BT style. A bonus is I can use the same bullets to reload for 308 and 30-30. (Single shot for the 30-30 since these are spitzer type.)

I load so many cast bullets it seems strange to have FMJ stuff. I do have the ability to cast my own bullets for the Garand that won't lead up the barrel but the jacketed gives some latitude.

An easy real world two part test:

A. Tape your little fingers in a splint as indicated in the pic., then type some. Say, participate here.

B. Curl your little fingers to the palms of your hands and tape them secure. - not sadistically -
Then type as indicated above.

Is there any comfort or stress, or ability to function difference?

Holding the little finger extended while curling the other three is unnatural whether it is touching the grasped object or not. The grip test is flawed.

122 Here in TX open carry is allowed except for places with a 30.07 sign. However, I wouldn't personally do so - I like the idea of neither confirming nor denying that I am armed. That being said, I'm good with the option existing, in case a need arises where I need to open carry.

Walmart cut off its nose to spite its face. I remember loading up at Walmart before going to the range in Houston (Top Gun Range - if you are in the area and haven't been, quit waiting for the bloody invite and JUST GO THERE) because, damn the ammo was cheap compared to Cabela's or Academy or other places I had been. And on my way out I picked up a few other things I needed rather than make a separate H-E-B run - hear that, Walmart? That's your operating principle, you morons!

Walmart might THINK they are the only game in town but not anymore. There's amazon, there's other stores in the small town near me (Dollar General is there but I won't set foot in there for reasons of my own.) I can load up on groceries on occasional runs I have been known to make to H-E-Bs in other portions of the state. As for ammo? Lots of options abound.

The way I see it, lots of businesses - big, and the sainted, virtuous small businesses have run me off in the past, and that's fine - if you want to leave my money on the table, no sweat off my balls, as it is often said...

JTB, I don't cast but wouldn't for the M1 anyway. FMJ is fine. Actually I'm a boring reloader for both M1s, Garand and carbine. Just do the standard load for the carbine, and close to standard/best shootin' for my rifles for the Garand. But that's OK. I reload partly just to save $$$ and ensure supply, works fine.

And the HXP ammo sold out a while ago, last of the major [non-corrosive] M1 surplus food, I think. Not connected to nefarious efforts to infringe/harass via ammo, which are under way and have been for a while, so JTB you're correct about that.

135 Oh, btw, my Walmart is the one closest to NRA HQ.

It is of a size that they never carried firearms.

They were during the Obama days bare of 22LR and many times 9mm and 5.56

Since Trump they've had good stockage. As of Friday their ammo cabinet was bare of any ammo you might want. Except some overpriced box of 9mm. Not sure what made it special perhaps they were gold not lead.

Posted by: blaster at September 08, 2019 08:07 PM (ZfRYq)

136 I've used Talon grips on my smaller autos. And it makes a big difference.

My XD9 and CZ P07 both have good grips out of the box, really locking in my grip without being painful.

I don't have a ton of grip strength, which I regret but....tech jobs. I have been experimenting with different grips to see how it affects accuracy. And I'm...starting to re-think the whole 'high, thumbs stacked' grip. I'm finding a lot of my low/left groups happen with that grip. While if I lower my thumb to fit in the groove engineered into the group, my groups are tighter and my shots are...well, still too low but they aren't low AND left.

9 mm day. Trying to work on a couple of things previously alluded to. Beretta 92FS, Ruger SR 9 C, S W MP 9C and G32 with 9mm barrel.
No warm up. From standing, sitting, walking. Draw and Tueller drill.
Shooting for survival instead of small groups.
Takeaway, you have to practice the safety off piece. Except with the Glock. Beretta maybe a nice military carry, but that decocker cant be smoothly flipped unless your thumb is unnaturally long. Ruger ok. SW better. Glock best. If you keep booger hook off, etc.
The speed of encounter in that vid brings things into focus.

143 As for the open carry/concealed carry....I mostly carry concealed. But I do like living in a state where, in theory, if I need to go around without my gun concealed I won't go to jail. Probably.

Usually I'm open carrying when working in the back yard or if taking the trash out and don't want to bother with a jacket.

Tactically, concealed carry is better. People may very well assume I have a gun....and they'd be right...but better to make people wonder.

155 Anyway, range report and I'll try to keep to short

Was doing more accuracy training after the one-handed drills caused some...deterioration. Last week was my CZ P07, this week was the XD9.

And I'm noticing that I'm really pushing my shots low. Consistently. IF....IF I pull slow, moving only my trigger finger, the bullets go into the middle of the target like magic. But most of the time, I'm....dunno, consistently flinching? I mean, it's really consistent. Frustrating.

But groups were good. Some were really good, one hole groups a 7 yards or a 5 shots grouped like dots on dice. Others were a bit wider but on the whole....the XD9 is a very good pistol.

I'm just a little pissed at how I'm shooting it.

156 By law Massachusetts of all places is an Open Carry state. No one of course beyond uniformed security actually does it through due to also being a May Issue state where a Chief of Police can revoke or restrict your license (yes, there are such things as "no carry" Licenses to Carry in Massachusetts) at any time for anything they can get a judge to rubber stamp as a "public safety" reason like a t-shirt they dislike.

157 I carry concealed here in town, as does Giggles. It makes me happy, I'm not advertising and it will come as a surprise to the perp if and when we have to draw. And neither of us want that, at all. I open carry on the property, if out of sight of the cabin. Or if hunting.

A neighbor put his rifle down once to creep up and peep over the rimrock. he got a weird feeling, like being watched. He was... good sized lion was stalking him. he scooted real fast to his rifle and made noise and stuff. says he won't ever go without a firearm ON him when out and about ever again.

161 A few years ago I started having numbness in little finger and somewhat in the ring finger of both hands.
Having had some nasty issues in the past with my neck I self-diagnosed a pinched nerve in my neck.
Lo-and-behold the nerve conduction tests came back as no problems in the neck area.
A referral to a neurosurgeon discovered pinched ulnar nerves in both arms. The damage was irreversable and could eventually result in the little fingers being inflexibly curled onto the palms of my hands. The good news was that surgery could be done to "release" the nerves and further damage would be prevented.
The surgeries worked and I am happy to say that, although, the mild tingling and numbness continues the problem has not worsened and, over the years, the nasty scars up near my elbows eventually faded.
I have no appreciable loss of strength in those fingers.

Incidentally, the power on a sword stroke, using a katana, comes from the little finger of the left hand. Did you ever wonder why a traditional yakuza apology involves chopping off the little finger of the left hand at the first joint and presenting it to the offended party?

Oh, and my blue-eyed strawberry-blonde brother did not get the ulnar nerve surgery and one of his little fingers is pressed forever (short of amputation) onto the palm of his hand. It is bothersome and gets in his way.

The longer you wait the more irreversible damage occurs.

162 comment drift strikes again: the reason to reload for the 416 is that Barrett factory ammo is 8.90/round, and they're out more often than not. like right now.

primed brass from them is 5.35/ea and new projos are 1.99. used ones are 1.25

figure my labor is free and the only variable is the cost of powder. i've already contacted the projo maker for load data, and am trying to see if anyone else caries the unfired Ruag brass.

I've always wondered why some rubbery grips cover all parts of the grip except the palm.

I get the "better grip" argument; the Hogue grips I have practically weld my hands to my current weapon of choice ... and they also cover everything, so there is some cushioning in all directions.

But there are other rubbery grips, like on the 1911 in the photo. Why not thin-down the sides and put a .125" strip on the grip safety and also on the grip?

190 If you want to increase grip strength, buy a P64. You have to hold it pretty darn firmly because of the snappy nature of the Makarov round and it takes some practice to be able to squeeze hard with the three little fingers and still have a loose trigger finger muscle.

But there are other rubbery grips, like on the 1911 in the photo. Why not thin-down the sides and put a .125" strip on the grip safety and also on the grip?

Michigan used to have a ban on switchblades. The only people who could lawfully own a spring-assisted folding knife were people with one hand.

It got repealed not that long ago. The State Police testified that they had noticed zero trend on these items as murder weapons and opined that it must have been a panic over West Side Story or something.

215 Open carry vs. concealed carry. To me this is really not much of an issue.

When I carry my gun concealed it give me the best chance of survival in all situations that I can think of.
When I am concealed, am one of the crowd. No one is looking pointing at me "Wow he has a gun" and any potential bad people who are set on causing violence, will target me first. (I will concede that open carry could cause someone to think twice about a confrontation) but they have the element of surprise and can make the first move on me.
Unless I am one of the first targeted (unluck of the draw in most recent shooter cases). , I will have an opportunity to react

A public range near here (Moron endorsed!) has a six-round maximum per mag. I don't mind for exactly the reason you mention. Loading and unloading drills are great.

I also find it forces you to keep acquiring the target, so it's more realistic than simply getting a good sight alignment and plinking away.

Even on other ranges, I rarely load more than 10 rounds.

223 Say what you will about Hi-Point pistols, they do have large grips. I have the .45 and it's heavy but fits good and is very comfortable to shoot. Yeah that blow back will disturb you aiming but that's okay as the weight will bring it back on battery quite well and absorbs the shock so it doesn't bother you hand.

One thing I did do was get the carbine in .45 also and that's just insane firing a pistol caliber with a carbine length firing grip is just like shooting bb's.

I understand as a collector you'd want to keep the orig. gear to maintain historical value and such.

For me a firearm is like one of my screwdrivers. I buy them for the fit and function and if they're not right then I either get another or change the one I have till it works the way I want it to.

the early side effects are amusing: stopped to buy two notebooks for the BORS instruction manual. herself made two copies, one with holes on the right, the with holes on the left, so you could use the back of the previous page to write notes, etc.

got two, one blue for the left, and black for the right

thirtyish guy rang them up as i chatted with someone i kinda know, then he said, "It's waiting for your card".... i was confused, then realized he was talking about paying.

since the only "card" i have is mine, and that's where the VA beer money goes, no way in hell am i wasting that money on stupid books, so i handed him a 20 out of the grocery money i get each week to run the house, this being a "house" expense.

i continue to chat with my "friend" winding up the convo as he counts out a stack of ones, with some coins.

being of sound mind, i double checked to make sure i wasn't accidentally shorted.

he'd given me 20 singles, so i actually made a profit on the purchase.

they don't teach these people *anything* these days. there's a young man, the son of the owner at a local butcher store we frequent. i've been teaching him how to count change back the old fashioned way. Dad is amused and Granddad is pleased, and boy do i have a story for him the next time i stop by.

236 I've never 'openly' carried although when I go to visit my brother in Indy, who lives in one of the worst neighborhoods in that city, I carry my 1911 on a hip holster and cover it with my shirt. Okay, somewhat cover it with my shirt. The print is unmistakable. Trust me, it's one of those neighborhoods where you kinda sorta want them to know you're armed.

Usually, though, I keep my little Seecamp concealed when running around in my little Mayberry-like town. I sometimes carry my S&W Airweight snubby on my hip, but it's snug against my body and you wouldn't know it was there.

My state (Indiana) allows open carry but I carry concealed partly because I usually don't want to let people know I'm armed and partly because I don't want anyone to feel discomfited.

255 I live in a big city in an open-carry state. Never seen any regular people open-carrying.

IMO you just look too conspicuous. Law enforcement personnel are the only people who always open-carry, and nobody pays attention to them because that's expected.

Probably the only way NOT to stick out while open-carrying would be to look like law-enforcement, which is not legal.

292 rhomboid @ 243 (heh 243, get it?) As to ammo, the cheapest is always steelcase. I have burned lots of that stuff, but only in AK's, because they were made to digest steelcase. I will use it or alumimum case in revolvers, maybe just maybe a bolt action but not in any of my AR types (unless piston-driven) or semiauto pistols. Could brak an extractor or pull of the case rim and leave the tube in the barrel throat. And that sucks as they say. YMMV.

303 Jogging at sunrise in the place in question [remote mountain trail in San Diego County] was pretty much the textbook/manual example of "things NOT to do to be safe from mountain lions".

By coincidence that year also had a rash of incidents of the big kitties venturing into suburban areas [biologists said they couldn't explain it], causing a proposition to be put on the ballot to re-establish limited hunting of the cats. It lost. Back then, CA had a few pro hunters on retainer who would be called in for dangerous/apparently ill cats. Dunno about today, assume that has not changed.

You know correct me if I'm wrong but I've never seen a phrase in the Constitution that gives the Supreme Court the right to decide what is constitutional and what is not nor that it's a "Living" constitution. (implying that it can grow and shrink and become other than what was first written)

I'm really tired of (old fogies deciding what's constitutional and what is not with no redress to their decisions) well other than impeachment but that's hardly likely.

319 A lot of these guys run a campaign just to get the money to spread around. This is the way the law works; if they quit, they have to use the money left over from donations to pay all the bills of the campaign. Any left over from that can be used by the person who ran for donations for other people, other races.

This is why so many get in on the campaign they can then use those donations without asking permission on other people races and they then become influencers in the race.

It may be too late, but does the grip on the .45 feel too small or narrow?

322 On the ButtMart thing, only positive I see is benefit to fun stores, which usually use the help. But I think any and all examples of this kind of dumb, craven, misinformed, bigoted, irresponsible corporate version of crazy mob behavior degrade the culture and push us further into the idiocy now half-consuming the country on many topics.

Imagine the megaton-impact of fresh air that might occur if a big company came out with a reasoned, well-informed comment on things like this, chiding others for joining the mob, and asking their customers, as citizens, to better inform themselves and think through important questions.

I measure our distress as the distance from *that* kind of corporate reaction, to what we in fact are getting. Measurable only in light years.

326 Perhaps I should read the manual.
I just found out my 1911 s can be put on half cock by pulling back on the hammer. This pulls in the grip safety so I can pull the trigger with my thumb solidly jammed against the hammer. I do not have to fuss with the grip safety to lower the hammer. This is useful when adjusting the holster and the like.

I must be over 2,000 rounds by now and have never had an issue.

I will say that the PPQ is mysterious to me. At first, I thought I had it figured out. But then - if I may use the metaphor - it's like a lover. You explore new techniques, new approaches and you see it in a whole new light.

Riding the reset? Dangerously fun. I can't decide if I want to go all-in or merely flirt with that feature. Anticipating the break is likewise risky, but you can have some great shooting that way.

It contains multitudes. One of my better purchases. If the ticker can take it, I want to shoot next weekend. The PPQ shall accompany me.

Major faux pas. It would be scandalous. I'd show up at the range and people... people would talk. Hushed tones. Furtive glances.

Oh. It's that guy.

So even though it's an hour more cleaning and another couple pounds of ammo, they all come, pretty much, every time.

I once had a hard lockup on a 1911. It was the result of the primer not being seated far enough into the round. They were some reloads that a friend had given to me.

That particular lockup was scary. Fortunately for me, the gunsmith was at the range at the time. He put on heavy glove, put a brass rod down the muzzle, and hit the end of the rod to free the round. We were both waiting for bad things to happen, but, it worked, Which relieved us both, but, most especially, the gunsmith.

Leave "SCOTUS says" to the courts.

Then next class, damn thing happened again. I even got camera phone pics of the jam.

Eh. It's in the 'range toy' category now. I have other options, thankfully.

Hate to say it, but you're limp-wristing it.

Or something like that.

Could you be anticipating the break? Do you try to ride the reset?
Posted by: Convalescing Author A.H. Lloyd at September 08, 2019 09:52 PM (cfSRQ)

Maybe. If so, it's the only pistol that I limp wrist.

No, riding the reset causes different failures. A dead trigger I can fix with an immediate action. And that's probably partly my fault, trying to be fast and fancy.

Look, you guys love the PPQ, I get it. I really do. Like I said, the gun shoots like magic. I'm just one data point but I can't trust it. I got XD and Glocks and CZs that I can carry instead. Maybe some day I'll have a buddy or a friend's kid I can gift it to.

That's why I think it's something with anticipating the break.

Having someone else shoot it for a while is the best idea. Have them put 100+ rounds through and see what happens.

Alternatively, do a session of hate-shooting with it. You know - tight grip, steady firing for area rather than pinpoint accuracy.

The other night, watching Jaws, I noticed Quint manually cycling his M1, and excessive muzzle flash. Clearly lame blanks, or more likely the weapon wasn't set up for blanks. Wouldn't cycle correctly.

391 Two thing:

A Hogue grip made it possible for me to use my Walther PPK/S as my carry gun. It didn't do anything for the .380's lack of stopping power, but at least the puny cartridge now fits my hand (admittedly large) and I can carry it.

As far as spellcheck is concerned, her's one made in hell: There is a find chronograph out there that uses doppler to measure a bullet's speed. Doppler is a form of radar, an the company somehow wanted to tie the name of their product to the laboratory, hence the name LABRADAR. Spell check thinks I meant to write the name of a popular breed of dog, so EVERY FRICKING TIME I TYPE Labradar, SPELL CHECKS IT TO Labrador.

It is almost impossible to type the correct name of the product. Every time I try, this machine that is smarter than I am changes it to the name of a breed of dog.

Take THAT, Spellchuck!

394 My Gen 2 Glock 21 doesn't fit my hand at all. But damn if the gun doesn't shoot. Might be my most accurate pistol at 25 yards with irons.
Posted by: Mark Andrew Edwards

I carry an M&P .45 Shield. A little small for my hand but the gun makes me look like I know what I'm doing. My favorite gun fits like a dream, shoots like a dream except for a nasty habit stove-piping a round once per hundred or so.

Calif has some weird code too.

Sheath Knives are not to be worn, and they will nail you for it in the city.

But SWORDS? AOK as long as in the scabbard.

I think its due to swords still being a legal part of military dress uniforms, or it could just be the usual politicians can't be consistent thing.
Posted by: Don Q at September 08, 2019 08:36 PM (NgKpN)

Actually you can carry a fixed blade knife in CA as long as it is not concealed. Any concealed fixed blade no matter what size is illegal.
Most cops do not know the law regarding knives in CA because they are too lazy to read the California Penal Code regarding knives in its entirety.
If you read the CPC it starts out about not carrying dirks, daggers, etc., drones on for three quarters of a page and then says "except when suspended from the waist." And there is case law where a guy had a fixed blade strapped to his lower leg and was deemed to be in compliance, because the pants went all the way to his waist.
I was a sworn peace officer and spent many a graveyard shift reading the penal code for entertainment. Even veteran cops do not know the law. Most assume double-edged blades are verboten. Not the case.
But, ANY folding knife can be carried concealed in California. A few years ago a company produced a folder called the Sifu targeted at the California market. It was a very large folding knife.
Oh, and automatic (switchblades) with blades lest than 2 inches are OK, but what's the point. There are a ton of great knives by Kershaw out there that are more reliable and open with minimal effort. I had a Mini-Reflex that I had the spring replaced twice due to breaking (no cost, but, still when you want a knife, Now! you don't want to worry about the spring being broken).
Oh, no gravity knives as defined by being able to be opened solely by the weight of the blade or by a flick of the wrist (this can be a tricky one if you have a well lubed, well worn folder that was not designed to be a gravity knife but becomes one if the officer flicks his wrist enough times to get the blade to snap out).

The problem with ignorant cops is they can arrest you and you will beat it in court, but you have to go to court and the process becomes the punishment.

396 Glock-30 Gen 4 I just bought, came with 4 different back-straps to adjust for your hand size. As it's a double-stack .45, it's already pretty big, but some of us have long fingers...

397 "Did you finally buy the 44 Mag snubbie you always wanted, but find the
recoil makes it just too painful to shoot so you leave it in the gun
safe?"
No! I did buy it and carry it concealed and it shoots just fine, but then I can shoot a 12 gauge single handed and that shoots fine was well and the recoil doesn't bother me.
