Hold Your Breath And Stamp Your Feet And Pass Laws All You Want: The Price-Demand Curve Will Never Change

I know...I know...NO MATH! But this is really just a pretty picture!

Demand-curve-9b76b609.png

Unionizing Uber

Uber lost $5.2 billion in the second quarter of 2019. New York City already imposed a minimum wage of $27.86 for Uber and Lyft. Taking an Uber in New York is now more expensive than calling for a car service. And customers voted with their wallets by looking for other options for going from A to B.

Uber trips dropped by well over a million in one month.

That million rides represented fewer passengers using Uber, fewer drivers finding a niche in the market, and less viability for the ridesharing market and the entire gig economy.

But a bunch of ignorant, elitist assholes who don't even take Uber and Lyft because they have cars and drivers paid for by the city of New York will feel oh-so-virtuous, because they have protected the common man, the ignorant laborer who doesn't know any better. You know, by destroying an easy entry-level job he could do in his spare time.

But the reality is worse. Much, much worse. It's just a crooked dodge, and any New Yorker who pays attention to the machinations of the taxi and limousine commissions scams will know what's what.

A gig economy is based around flexibility and convenience. That's a problem for municipalities which make money by taxing established industries. New York City is destroying ridesharing because it makes a fortune from auctioning off taxi medallions. Ridesharing ruined that business, so it's ruining ridesharing.
The taxi medallion business was a huge cash cow for the connected elites, and when Uber and Lyft arrived, the value of a taxi medallion crashed. And they would have none of that! So they set their sights on ridesharing companies, and lo and behold!

Apple is COMING OUT WITH THEIR NEW PRODUCT line on Tuesday! OMG!!!

Yeah, I know, I know - a real snoozer, right?

Tim Cook got a few years out of following the roadmap of new products that Jobs wrote out before he died, but now, he ain't got nothing.

The big excitement will be how many transgender presenters Apple trots out on Tuesday - they used a transgender presenter for a developers conference a few months ago, so I'm sure that Cook won't pass up the opportunity to do so again for a much bigger audience.

Remember, when you're out of ideas, double down on the Social Justice Warfare!

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate said he would allow gig workers to unionize to "put the interest of workers first."

"There are people in the gig economy who go through more jobs in a week than my parents went through in their lifetime," Buttigieg said during the debate when answering a question about trade. "That's why I propose that we allow gig workers to unionize, because a gig is a job and a worker is a worker."

Posted by: Bertram Cabot, Jr. at September 08, 2019 02:16 PM (aKsyK)

37 I have taken exactly TWO Uber rides in two cities. So my experience is hardly definitive. My first ride was in a large city. An Uber to the airport was almost exactly the came cost as a local taxi to the airport.

My 2nd ride was a local hop to pick up a car from the repair shop. It cost me about $10 including the tip. I could have walked the distance in an hour. I could have ridden my bike in 15 minutes, but I couldn't fit my bike in my small sedan ruling out that option.

Uber will be a small part of my transportation plans. If it is regulated out of business I won't be surprised. I hear nightmare stories about drivers actually earning negative income and effectively paying Uber to drive for them.

This has never made sense to me.

Posted by: Mr. Peebles at September 08, 2019 02:12 PM (oVJmc)

I had to look that up since that number sounded so ridiculous - okay, now it makes more sense. As they grew and prepared for an IPO, Uber had given away a very large number of restricted stock options. They all vested at the time of the IPO, which took place in the 2nd quarter. $3.6 Billion of their "Loss" was associated solely with the vesting of past restricted stock options, triggered by the IPO. So that part had nothing at all to do with actual operations, it's just financial engineering.

Posted by: Cosmic Charlie at September 08, 2019 02:51 PM (PUmDY)

164 This story covers a lot of ground and brings in a lot of different threads.

-Uber and Lyft (or at least the idea) also stands athwart the public transit idea as well. I like the idea of trains (but hate public transit) but the problem with them is that they do not do going from point A to point B. They take you (or goods) from somewhere near point A to somewhere near point B. You then have to make up the difference at the two ends of the trip.

-what is the current wage for an Uber driver outside of these big cities? Even the $27 an hour mentioned in the story seems kind of high. If this wage was arrived at due to demand and the two companies trying to lure drivers away from each other and made sense because they could actually sustain the cost (the demand was actually that high) then I would not have a problem with it, but that is not the impression I get.

- I always wonder if the Cash For Clunkers idea was not actually striking at the whole idea of private ownership of vehicles in general by striking at supply and therefore driving the cost of both the item itself, but also at the service industry supporting cars in general. (I have always wondered how maintenance shops were affected by getting rid of not only older cars that needed more service, but also were by and large easier to work on.)

172 Uber and Lyft have unusual and flawed business models. They pay a mega shitload for insurance which is a big driver in why they lose money. Real money as in cash out the door

Biggest long term problem is that they've been underpaying drivers when you include auto maintenance expense. After the driver goes to the shop and pays $1000 they quit. Driver turnover averages less than a year

In the meantime the people on the bottom of the food chain who relied upon cheap used cars for transportation were priced out of the market. To this day I am convinced that was part of the plan to force them onto public transportation.

Even though there was no successful legal challenge to the law, I and others are convinced that if it had made it to SCOTUS it would have been ruled illegal.

201 I had an Uber driver tell me last month that they have shifted the model to paying drivers for "seat minutes" so he gets paid for being a driver whether there are fares or not. Which sounded shocking to me, because thats a JOB. If true, it could explain the losses, partly.
Posted by: BunkerInTheBurbs, still needs a new Nic! at September 08, 2019 02:42 PM

Not completely true.

Before approximately 21 Aug., drivers were paid a rate per mile and a rate per minute from the time they picked up a passenger ("pax" in Uber-driver speak) until they dropped them off. In general, the longer the ride, the more profit for the driver.

Around that time (depending on city), they upped the $$/min., dropped the $$/mile. Drivers started getting paid when they accepted the ride, and drove to pick up the pax, as well as getting paid during the trip. $$ ends, as before, when the pax is dropped off. (The preceding applies to a single pax-trip only. There are arrangements that pick up and drop off additional passengers during a 'trip', and in general, the driver only makes a fixed fee for each additional pick-up.

Both Uber and Lyft are squeezing the drivers hard. Their investors have been subsidizing passengers heavily.

216 Greetings:

I pushed a hack in NYC in the early '70s during one of my attempts at a college education. I would work evenings, Thursday through Sunday usually from 4pm to 10 or so. Back then, drivers got 49% of the meter plus tips. Once I got $40 on the meter, I'd usually had about $10 in tips in my pocket. $30 was my daily goal and it had a direct effect on my quitting timr.

Then came the "gypsy cabs" which were the taxi equivalent of today's homeless folks. Initially, they focused on ghetto areas under the guise of taxi racial discriminations but they didn't stay there long once they figured out that the city wasn't too interested in applying the rules to them.

One more bit of tid. AT one point, the taxi union went on strike (in the middle of winter no less) because older members were retiring and there wasn't much moola in the pension kitty. So, the union sold out the couple of year driver by reducing their pay to 40% with the 9% going into the pension fund for the career drivers. That's when I started looking for the exit.

* After they crush the competition, they raise prices by a lot
* They expand into delivery services and eventually replace the post office
* They perfect AI driving and fire all their drivers
* They put car manufacturers out of business; in the future, few people still own a car, 90% rent one by the hour
* They may get cozy with and become an unofficial arm of the government (i.e. the payoff is in the form of political power)
* All of the above
Surely that's too ambitious and unlikely to succeed, but it's creepy nevertheless.

Posted by: GWB at September 08, 2019 03:11 PM (JJCAp)

Er. No. Price is the equilibrium market clearing point at which the purchaser is willing to pay what the supplier is charging, and what the supplier is willing to produce at given demand. The supplier seeks a price point at it's lowest marginal cost of the last widget produced. The purchaser seeks a price point at his highest marginal utility. As you can imagine, that's a pretty intricate dance on both sides, and the equilibrium price is only an approximation.

313 And, yes, the graph is correct. Imagine that price is horizontal to the x axis and it is variable. As prices rise, demand falls. As prices decrease, demand increases. But, as others have pointed out, the price of widgets are not arbitrary. That horizontal price line moves up and down according to the equilibrium clearing price. It is that mechanism that socialists try to pretend does not exist at their peril.

Posted by: ObjectionSustained at September 08, 2019 04:49 PM (+dfXz)

316 Simplistic supply demand graphs are for Econ 101
Posted by: Ignoramus at September 08, 2019 04:49 PM (1UZdv)

Simplistic, but axiomatic. Sure, a supplier can attempt to set prices above market clearing equilibrium, but demand will adjust and find another supplier, or demand will switch to another widget that provides greater marginal utility than the widget being offered above the natural clearing price. At that point the original supplier will have to fall back to the lower price point. Price is a dependent variable.

Posted by: ObjectionSustained at September 08, 2019 04:58 PM (+dfXz)

Posted by: Ignoramus at September 08, 2019 04:53 PM (1UZdv)

Price elasticity has to do with demand sensitivity. In the case of inelastic demand, the demand curve is steeper - in extreme cases the curve can be almost vertical. Posted by: Ignoramus at September 08, 2019 05:05 PM (1UZdv)

You are right that a demand curve on its own provides no information about price points. You have to have a supply curve to determine that. But here, the demand curve is correct, but it only displays a generality of price/demand sensitivity. Run a straight edge horizontal with the x axis and move it up and down the y (price) axis. It will correctly tell you - generally - that the higher the price of a thing the less demand there is for it. On a supply/demand curve, the y axis is always the price variable. It's kind of counter intuitive.

You could draw a demand curve with demand as the y axis and price as the x axis, but it would be an inverse function. The curve would end up being convex instead of concave. However, the established graph is the one posted above.

329 If gas were to go $10 the demand would still be there, but less satisfied. Price serves as a rationing device.

The demand curve is based on widgets purchased at a certain price. If gas went to $10 per gallon it would show the demand curve to be correct. Fewer people would buy fewer gallons of gas. Thus, the higher the price the fewer units sold. Demand is not the same thing as desire. It is the decision to acquire a widget because it meets marginal utility at an established price. Price is established by supply/demand equilibrium.

Posted by: PG at September 08, 2019 06:37 PM (iqCkn)

341 demand in this case is relatively fixed, but not completely. Uber increased supply, but they may not be sustainable if they find they are losing money. And government interfering also means the situation is not normal price/demand driven analysis.

It is the medallion controlled supply, using government to cripple competition. Pay government enough and they will put the thumb on the scale, pay them more and they will prosecute your enemies, and ignore your own crimes.

Posted by: illiniwek at September 08, 2019 06:42 PM (Cus5s)

342 Uber got a key ruling in NYC. Only medallion cabs can pick up street fares. Judge ruled that using Uber's app is not the same as hailing a cab on the street. The market value of 12,000 NYC medallions was $14 billion; now it's less than $2 billion. Mostly because this ruling blew up the medallion business model. Using an app to find a cab is easier than waiting for the cab to find you. And any schmoo can drive a cab using GPS

But Uber doesn't "own" this. Lyft and new copycats using ride apps can too (and there are already copycats in NYC)

343 If I'm in business, I'm looking for how I can satisfy that demand at the current market price. ie. can I increase supply, or deliver a substitute.

Why would you act against your own self interest and keep the price low in the face of higher demand? If demand will support a higher price at the same marginal unit price of production you will, in fact, cause a market shortage. The other day my favorite lemon tea was on sale for 1/2 price. What a great deal... That is until I got to the store and there was none left on the shelves. Of course there are sales and marketing strategies that go into pricing other than market clearing considerations. The point, though, is you don't meet increased demand by holding the line on prices; you raise the price to service current demand.

345 If demand will support a higher price at the same marginal unit price of production you will, in fact, cause a market shortage.

Meant to say:

If demand will support a higher price at the same marginal unit price of production you will, in fact, cause a market shortage IF YOU DON'T RAISE PRICES.

346 Saying that demand goes down when price goes up is a tautology that makes the model work. It's of limited utility when you get into the real world.

What actually happens is that you have no trades above the market clearing price. (Assuming lots of widget makers so no pricing power). It's not the demand went away, it's that the model demands a straight line.

Think flat screen TVs . Years ago people going to Wal*Mart craved them. The demand was there but they couldn't afford them. Cut the price and sales shot up. Even with the price cut, the dollar volume sold is probably much greater.

347 " you will, in fact, cause a market shortage IF YOU DON'T RAISE PRICES."

That's because price rations who gets the widget (or flat screen TV).

At the market clearing price, there are always some who would have paid more.

348 Now if instead of saying demand goes down when price goes up, you instead say "you sell fewer units when price goes up", then I agree with you.

Depending on price elasticity you may increase revenues despite raising prices. More so, for profits if you have strong margins and pricing power. That's the luxury market.

349 When demand goes up
And supply goes down,
People gather 'round
And they all begin to frown.

350 Entry level? Thats cabs driven by minorities and immigrants. Ubers are driven by people who can afford nearly new cars. Uber doesn't believe in laws I am surprised if they pat their drivers 37 dollars an hour taxi drivers don't get that.
