Saturday Morning Coffee Break

rise-shine-20160126-14.jpg

***

Good morning Horde. Hope you all had a nice week. Let's take a look at a few things that didn't get too much attention here at the AoSHQ.

  • Coupons for health care.

  • Sometimes you have to pass on the double dog dare challenges.

  • Quite the hurricane prevention move.

  • Say goodbye to Nigerian email schemes, say hello to AI schemes.

  • Not sure about you, but my Mom taught me never to point at anyone.

  • Some people need to work smarter not harder.

  • Quite the amusement ride.

Feel free to comment on these stories or something else. After all this is an open thread. Be nice to the 'ettes. Don't pee in the pool or run with sharp objects.

    Have a great weekend!

Good Morning Morons today is Saturday, September 7, 2019. On this date in 70 AD a Roman army under Titus occupied and plundered Jerusalem. Some speculate that the Ark of the Covenant was spirited away following this raid. But Jewish scholars still say it was spirited away during an invasion previously by the Babylonians. Indeed there are hundreds of theories on what ultimately happened to the Ark.

It's pretty typical for conquering groups with another religion to destroy religious objects of the conquered group.

Just to show that their god is more powerful.

This winter will be The Winter. I will put a kiddie pool on the back deck. I will fill it with hot water and run some heater elements out to it. I will put some aquarium air stones in it. I will bring my iPad out to it and post on the ONT from my redneck hot tub, in the snow, wearing an earflap hat.

19 (continuing the Costco conversation from last thread) We actually do have a decent amount of storage space, so having a year's supply of toothpaste might not be so bad.

As for banning concealed carry, unless they have a 30.06 sign, they can fuck off. Customer agreements and gentle "No handguns please" signs have no force in law. In Texas, that 30.06 sign is the only thing that can legally prevent concealed carry.

28 what guitar are you looking at, BackwardsBoy?

A brand spanking new MIM Fender Strat. Player Series. They revamped that line last summer with a different tremolo, new pickups and a tone control for the bridge pickup, which is new.
I've always loved the sound of a Strat. My guitar-playing buddy whom I've spoken of here before loaned me his Area 51 Squire a while back and I've been learning some tunes and trying to get decent on playing some lead. Never owned an electric guitar before.

Learning a new instrument keeps these 29-year-old synapses firing and helps stave off...um...something. I forget what, exactly. But it's fun.

The original ark almost certainly disappeared when Nebuchadnezzar sacked Jerusalem and carried the entire ruling class off into 70 years of exile. (If it was still around at that point, which is not certain) Maybe the Babylonians carried it off, maybe it was burned when the 1st Temple was burned, one group in deepest Africa says that they are the descendants of a group of Jewish priests who escaped the burning, took ship, and fled down the African coast where they intermarried with the locals out of necessity. And that they still have the remains of the Ark today.

Saw a special report on that group once, it was actually fascinating. It's a black tribe in Africa, of course, but genetic testing showed all of them to have a very high number of genetic markers that are only found in historical Jewish populations, and to this day the tribe still uses traditional Jewish names.

There's actually a difference in how different groups treat these kinds of things that say a lot about them. Barbarians sack, and burn, and destroy, because that's all they know how to do, and they have no concept or care for preserving things for the future. Strong, confident cultures and empires, however, will grab symbols of power and authority from conquered peoples and transport them back to their own seat of power, to add to their own claims of Power and Authority.

One amusing example of this is how ancient Egyptian Obelisks of the Pharaohs have over the centuries ended up in Byzantium, Rome, London, and NYC.

Companies have been taken over by the SJWs. Business decisions be damned it's all about virtue signaling. I was reading a Morningstar report about a fund and Morningstar now has a "Carbon score" for funds. Meaning how much or little the fund invests in companies that are related to the fossil fuel industry. Wouldn't want a bad carbon score now would we comrades so don't invest in any companies like that. And a lot of investment companies are doing ESG (environmental, social and governance) meaning how left wing are the companies they invest in. They think the Millennials will prefer funds that are all SJW. Again the hell with performance for investors just virtue signal

It's not Walmart's open carry or ammo sales that will affect business. It's this:

"Today, I'm sending letters to the White House and the Congressional leadership that call for action on these common sense measures. As we've seen before, these horrific events occur and then the spotlight fades. We should not allow that to happen. Congress and the administration should act. Given our decades of experience selling firearms, we are also offering to serve as a resource in the national debate on responsible gun sales."

    Rome, London, and NYC.

Posted by: Tom Servo at September 07, 2019 09:06 AM (V2Yro)

    ---
I think there's a difference between conquering a people and preserving antiquities.

The obelisks taken to London and NYC had zero spiritual meaning to the Egyptians. They were abandoned curios as far as the locals were concerned and the fact that Egyptians (and other Arabs who took over far more ancient cultures) are happy to sell it off speaks volumes. To them, it's just junk rich foreigners inexplicably want. (Sort of like oil, which they also didn't discover and had no idea what it was.)

The Romans had to smash the temple because Jews refused to bow before Caesar. It's a key point. Rome was very tolerant of differing religions. You could sacrifice to whomever (or whatever) you wanted, but you also had to include a pinch of incense and wine to Divine Augustus.

The Jews (and Christians) wouldn't do it, so they had to be crushed.

The key difference is that while Judaism was (and is) largely a tribal religion (conversion is different and they don't evangelize), Christianity was not, and eventually overwhelmed the pagans, flipping the script.

Then it was the altars to Jove that got smashed or converted into churches.

Big box retailers run on small margins, and if you shift that curve even a little, it's going to hurt them a lot.

121 The entire story about Buttigieg and his claim that "the Bible says life begins at breath" is an incredible indictment of the religious illiteracy of our media today, even the ones who are supposedly conservative.

The answer to Mayor Pete is "No, the bible NEVER says that, not anywhere, you made that up to justify your perverse and wicked mangling of Christianity." But the Bible DOES says specifically, many times, that life begins in the womb.

I tried to figure out where this idiotic claim of Pete's came from and I finally discovered it's from the Creation story, which not even many Christians take literally. (I believe it is a poetic metaphor for those things that were deep in the past for the writer) Genesis 2:7, on the creation of Adam:
"He breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and it was then that the man became a living being."

Even if you wanted to give this a literal meaning (and I don't, I think it is poetic, in a classic middle eastern tradition) then it only applies to Adam, the first man who was created, not born, not to all men. To use *this* to justify murdering a baby in the womb is not simply idiotic, it is blasphemy and damnable.

I saw this with all seriousness - Pete Buttigieg is NO Christian. He is an apostate and a blasphemer and an abomination to any true followers of Christ.

135 I like to deep-fry bacon. You can cook up a whole package in just a few minutes, and every strip is perfectly crisp throughout.

Plus you then have all that yummy grease just waiting for fries, tots, or hash-brown cakes.

If you try it, be sure to underfill the oil on the deep fryer somewhat, 'cause you'll have a lot more in there before you're done.

I was so excited that I told my parents how to do it. They laughed and said that it was the first thing everyone did back when the first Amana Radaranges came out, which was a little shocking. I thought I'd discovered it and here they are microwaving bacon before I was born.

I don't know what you guys are talking about, but no, in the world of service agencies, the concept of "stakeholders" is independent of who is getting paid. It's about who has a "stake" in whatever it is you are doing.

So if you are operating a dog park in your community, people who own dogs are stakeholders, people without dogs, who use the sidewalks around the dog park are stakeholders, neighbors are stakeholders... hell, some people probably say dogs are stakeholders.

Everybody who is going to feel the effects of this dog park, they all have a say, whether they pay money or not.

I use a sheet cake pan because it is easier to handle, but the aluminum foil is the perfect solution for clean up. I have a sort of grilling rack* that fits the pan so the bacon is not being fried in the bacon grease and the spatter is minimized. I find for thick cut bacon it takes 28-30 minutes at 400F,
I also have started turning the bacon at about 20 minutes in and sprinkling lemon pepper on the top side before putting it back in the oven.

179 "Stakeholder" as used by the Left is just another mechanism to destroy individual rights and limit freedom.

"Stakeholder" means that they have a "stake" in whatever you want to do, because-

in some vague and/or imaginary way it might affect them.

    Ex:

You wish to sell guns at your store.

NO! You may not do that because someone might shoot them accvidently or no cuz gun-owners are always spewing bullets everywhere!!!!

    etc.

It's a way to give people, who don't use your business and never will use your business, who will never be customers - a stay in your business.

Also, expand to include whether or not your church can follow the Bible or teach your child that there are only two sexes, or BBQing meat on your grill -

    for everyfuckingthing you do,

there's an insane progtard who has a "stake" in preventing you from doing it.

I think we can stop calling it temporary when it's been going on for more than a decade.

Most of the hippies grew up, cut their hair, got jobs, and started behaving like adults. Many of these millennials are already into their 30s, and they're showing no signs of growing up.

However, like with hippies, one thing that pushed them along was the generation coming after. The 80s saw a lot of people come of age who rejected a lot of the counter-culture bullshit of the hippies. Likewise, you have kids growing up today who think the commie bullshit of the millennials is just that, bullshit, and they're making fun of all the trigger warning nonsense coming from their elders.

They're our only hope, because expecting millennials to finally grow up... well, yeah, no. Not happening.

258 Here's how you save money on medical care....you negotiate.

My wife had a hospital stay that cost about $15K. Insurance covered $11K. For the remaining $4K I went to the admin and said, I can give you $3K today, or I will get on the 0% interest plan you offer, make the minimum payment and and you will get paid fully sometime in the 2nd administration of Eric Trump (OK I made that last part up).

And they gladly agreed to take $1K off the bill if I paid in full.

Same thing when my first kid was born. I knew we'd be on the hook for about $5K outside of what insurance covered. So I went to the hospital ahead of time and offered to prepay in exchange for a discount. They gladly took that offer and gave me 30% off.

Medical care is like any other business, don't pay MSRP. Negotiate.

They took the lefty crap and cranked it up a few notches. Then they turned on their elders as not woke enoiugh. These people never rebelled, so sad.
hell even the '50s generation rebelled. People that don't know history talk about the 50s s the last hold out of conservatism and they were beaten down by the 60s folk. Wrong answer if you are a historian. in fact, the 50s generation were the exception with their conservative values. The gens from the 30's and 40s were far from conservative. The '50s gen were the rebels. And then we had the 60s, more libs but not all as the media puts forth. There were always good Americans who sacrificed for this nation in every generation. Hell, even the Millinnials have many who stand guard.

It's not Walmart's open carry or ammo sales that will affect business. It's this:

    ---
    It's both.

And the ammo thing will matter because people go there expecting to find stuff and when it isn't there, they get upset.

The pattern of boycotts is usually a initial surge and then it tapers off and goes away.

But when you pull product, it actually grows over time as people who don't watch the news realize that the thing they came to buy is no longer there.

Sport rifle calibers and handgun calibers are very popular, and people doing their big shopping trip are going to be annoyed when they're gone.

Plus, don't sell the People of Walmart short. Word travels fast in small-town America.

Witness how West Virginia went from solid Dem to solid GOP in a decade.

Walmart has sent a clear signal that it hates its customers and doesn't trust them with guns.

And now to a more serious subject. I have freaking had it with chicken fajitas!! Fajita is a particular Spanish word that means a specific thing. Fajita means "little belt". It is describing a specific cut of meat that looks like a belt on the cow. It is a cot of beef. You can not more have chicken fajitas than you can have duck fajitas. Again, if you like them, it is ok with me. But it annoys a bit. And don't get me started on calling grilled veggies at Chipotle "fajita".

I think that's awesome. I feel like I missed out on that. My kids wanted to go to SEC schools for that reason and I had to incentivize their going to higher ranked but non sec schools by paying their frat dues. It's a shame that more can't have that kind of football spirit instead of LGBTQ awareness being the end all and be all. Hating on football culture is part of hating on the patriarchy and advancing the beta twits. When we go to war, I don't want "the band" in charge of the infantry. We can only take a bit more pussyhatness.

Recently an Alabama player was being interviewed after the NFL draft and the reporter asked him what he thought it would be like to play in front of sixty thousand people who came to watch the pro team's games every week. He handled it beautifully, too. His response was something like "It will take some adjusting, but I'll probably get used to it eventually."

(he'd been playing in front of 100K+ people every week before then)

Related: I suspect there's a very good reason the state of Alabama doesn't have a professional football team.

369 Alabama is a college football state. The NFL would not matter a lck there. Hell, the only reason the NFL matters in Texas is they love football so much. In Texa it goes high school, then college, then the NFL. Most don't notice this because Texas loved football so much. The NFL and Cowboys get their glory but high school and college comes first.

Also, the NFL has historically been a Northern league. Look at the history, this league was made up of teams from the North. There was a time not long ago when the Washington Redskins were the most Southern team they had. There is a reason you still have Redskins fans in the Carolinas and further South and West.

There is a reason the Cowboys and Redskins are such bitter rivals. The Redskins owner did everything he could to keep the Cowboys out of the NFL. Back in the day, the Redskins radio broadcasts went all the way to Texas.

Look at the Southern Teams like Atlanta and New Orleans. They came long after the NFL of the North.

Too much goo inside. Everywhere you place them, they'll be messy and smelly. And if you try to drive over/through them, the tires will become mucked up and slippery with it, and I don't know but I suspect it will stick to the inner workings of one's automobile, and gum it up something fierce.

379 A campaign worker for Josh Cole's (D) campaign just came to visit. I let him tell me who he was canvassing for, before saying "thank you for your time."

Instead of politely leaving, he asked why I wasn't interested in Cole's material. I informed him that I was inherently opposed to being ruled by, dictated to, or made subservient to anyone, anywhere, and that I actively opposed Cole's campaign.

Mr. Volunteer man told me "that's what's wrong with this country right now."

I posted on it earlier, but I think not doing ALL your shopping at Walmart will be enough for them to feel it. People used to go buy their oil, a Rubbermaid, and groceries from them, but now they're only buying the Rubbermaid because nowhere else sells it?

405 I have a practical life-skills question to ask the Horde:

We have a car we are planning to sell. We let it sit for a couple of months, and now it won't start without being jumped. It required jumping every time we want to start it.

Is it worthwhile to try to add water to the battery? The procedure sounds a little hazardous. Our other thought was to put the oldest battery from one of our other cars into the car for sale and buy a new battery for the car we will keep.

The car for sale is a '98 Sable, so we are not expecting much for it -- $500-800 maybe.

Posted by: JoeF. at September 07, 2019 11:10 AM (NFEMn)

There is a history behind that. I don't know all the details or most of them but can give you a few tidbits. First of all, the Cowboys were winners and that matters. They have only been around since 1960 and have won their share.

Secondly, I was told they used to give a ton of tickets to miitary types and this spread their fan base around the country. one last thing, and something that always perplexes Redskins fans. Anyone who has spent time in DC knows that the Cowboys are the second most popular team in that town. It has been that way for decades, there is nothing new about it. What it comes down to is the Cowboys were one of the first teams to integrate, in fact they may have done it from day on
( i am not sure about that). The last team to integrate was the Redskins. A lot of people who grew up in DC loved watching Bob Hayes play for the Cowboyss against a local team that did not allow black athletes.

And finally, the Cowboys were smart by marketing "America's Team" There is a reason the owner, general manager, and coash are in the NFL hall of fame. Today they are the most valuable sports franchise. Many like them and many more hate them. Like Howard Stern realized long ago, that is the cat bird seat.

410 We have a car we are planning to sell. We let it sit for a couple of months, and now it won't start without being jumped. It required jumping every time we want to start it.

    -

It will sell a lot easier with the new battery. If I were buying it would make me wonder if the alternator needed replacing, for one. That expense will help sell the car and can be accounted for in the price.

You might find a used battery on Craigslist, too.

412 Is it worthwhile to try to add water to the battery? The procedure sounds a little hazardous. Our other thought was to put the oldest battery from one of our other cars into the car for sale and buy a new battery for the car we will keep.

If you know the water levels are low, add some, preferably distilled. Pour slowly, using a funnel. Wear old clothes; IF you splash, the clothes will ace holes after you wash them.

Have you driven it enough to charge the battery?

Unless the donor battery is the same fitment as the dead battery, swapping is likely to be problematic.
