Food For Thought

We Need Christian Nationalism Because Religious Neutrality Has Failed

Interesting article about the role of Christianity in the founding of this country, one that I mostly agree with. Broadly speaking (and sometimes narrowly), if you show me a national problem we're dealing with, it can pretty easily be traced back to abandoning traditional Christian values. Note: this does not mean that everyone has to be a Christian, but I believe that a society based upon traditional Christian values (what we called American values up until the mid-20th century) works better than one that doesn't. “Wives obey your husbands, husbands love your wives as Christ loved the church” is a pretty good basis for a marriage no matter what religion both spouses follow. I'll let y'all argue about the “obey” hot potato in the comments, but remember it's a dual instruction. Whatever parameters you put on obey should be considered in light of the equally binding charge to the husband that he be willing to lay down his life for the wife. Somehow that part always gets left out by the feminists.

Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves

Remember the brothers video with the baseball bat a few weeks back? It's not like sisters are a walk in the park either.

Saddest thing about this is that it proves I've reached a certain age, because my initial reaction was “Wow, mom's kinda hot”. Love the look on her face too.

24 The essay I had trouble with was the "1519 project" essay mooted earlier.

I don't think Cortez / Cortes (spelling in the 1500s was, I suspect, as loose in Spain as it was in England) had any real notion that he was abolishing Aztec human sacrifices. I think Cortes was a sorry little figurehead who spent his whole time in New Spain being used.

source : Matthew Restall's When Montezuma Met Cortes.

The Spanish had some genocidal bastards (Alvarado) and Catholic bigots (de Landa) in their train. Cortes, to his credit, was neither. But he was also something of a b!tch. So when some of those genocidaires and bigots showed up - and there were plenty of those on the indigenous side as well - Cortes rolled with the punches.

The breakout is on her left front side. She's having the "shooting/stabbing" pains, and they're following the nerve back around her back.

We got her to the doc this afternoon. The rash had popped up a couple of days ago, and we thought it was just some sort of insect bite. But the shooting pains and very tender skin told a different story.

They've got her on acyclovir. Keep your fingers crossed.

48 hey, I *feel* for Cortes. He was a nobody in the Caribbean until Diego Velazquez (sp?) stuck him "in
charge" of a fleet full of Spanish pirates and sent the lot to Mexico. Mexico, at the time, I think we all agree, was a snakepit of Indian kingdoms all of whom REALLY wanted to massacre them some Aztecs, as the Aztecs had done to them.

Cortes survived all that, and even tried to learn the languages; and then was robbed of any opportunity to rule the place properly. In large part because of Velazquez, who was truly genocidal, back in Cuba.

Since Cortes was Catholic, I do hope his shade has done its time in Purgatory and is now in Heaven. [Not saying he should be a saint.]

Yes, shingles is caused by herpes zoster, the chicken pox virus. When you're first exposed, you get the chicken pox.

Then, the virus goes dormant, but still alive in your nerves. When it decides to pop out again, that's shingles.

It's not contagious, except for anyone who hasn't had chicken pox. A person with active shingles can transmit the virus and cause chicken pox in someone who has never been exposed.

I don't have any IRL friends left. I HATE PEOPLE so fucking much. The world is ALL fucking LIES and IGNORANCE now, and I feel like there's something really really HORRIBLE going to happen really really soon. There is no truth, there is no reason or logic, and there is no trust. NOTHING remains.

I read scripture, but I have no faith, and I just don't have it in me to do what the Lord tells me to do. I can't bring myself to LOVE monsters and liars and ignorant people, like the Lord wants me to. I cannot love a MONSTER like Dylann Roof. I cannot love a LIAR like Maxine Waters. I cannot love an IGNORAMUS like Bernie Sanders. Can you? How? PLEASE do not tell me "Love the sinner, hate the sin." I will NOT believe you!! If I got to heaven, and Jesus introduced me to Dylann Roof, I'd head right for the elevators, and hit the DOWN button. No, actually, I'd pry the door open and swan-dive down the fucking shaft.

I'm pretty sure God means to destroy us very soon, just like He's destroyed so many other evil societies in the past, so my prayers feel insincere, and actually insulting to God.

You guys still have faith in Trump. I don't know how many of you were around here during W. ALL us morons had faith in W, and the whole thing turned to FUCKING DOGSHIT. It's futile to put trust and faith in people. I think we're all fucking doomed. We deserve to be swept away, but it still SUCKS.

It's recommended for seniors, what the age is now, I don't know. But when you get 29 and stay there for about 20 years or so, it's a good idea.

Shingles occurs more often in the over 29 crowd.

Seriously, it's over 50 I think when the probability starts rising.

The pain and suffering of a bout of shingles is well worth the price. If you get it after the shot, it is mild and goes away in a few days.

92 82 Hi Morons! I'm sorry to lay this great big stinking rotten egg here. I know I've given you EVERY reason to despise me, and have no right to post this lament here.

99 69 Yes, shingles is caused by herpes zoster, the chicken pox virus. When you're first exposed, you get the chicken pox.

Then, the virus goes dormant, but still alive in your nerves. When it decides to pop out again, that's shingles.

Mine decided to pop out 3 years ago in my eyeball. Very expensive to treat. Now I'm taking Valocyclovir in a suppressant dosage. Seems to be working.

Yes, shingles in the eye is a big problem. That's the trouble with me and the forehead outbreaks. If it gets in your eye, well, it's not too good.

Another complication is "postherpetic neuralgia", where the pain persists -- nerve damage, for months or years after the original outbreak.

And the worst of that is again, when it involves facial nerves, which is "tic douloureux" or trigeminal neuralgia.

That is *severe* facial pain, causing you to wince and contort your face. It's torture.

If things keep going the way they are? First exclusion from society. No jobs, no social connections, no public life for anyone that doesn't sign on with the left's agenda. And that agenda will get more and more extreme.

Then comes the official government condemnation, profess what the government tells you to or prison. "Bigotry", which will include Christianity and basically what was considered normal views on sexuality circa 1992 will be banned.

And at that point either we see a violent reaction "Revolutionary War 2.0" OR we get Big Brother. Who will likely imprison the common people for all the antics the left celebrates now anyway.

159 NaCly, BB and B is one of our favorite ..... food stores. World Market, same company now, so select locations have a small food/wine/beer section. But excellent selection of high-end ingredients/snacks, and craft beers.

But the only reason it's a favorite is the discount coupon thing. When they have what we want, it knocks enough off to make the price equal to house brand/big store, but quality is better. Just occasionally drop by, location is convenient, but it's become a beer source.

160 18-1, smallpox might not actually have killed as many Mesoamericans as was claimed. Directly.

It did disfigure the survivors, and it certainly demoralised the rest of them. Demoralisation means suicides and fewer children being born.

The biggest direct killer of Mesoamericans was the cocolitzi. I'd heard this one was paratyphoid.

Except that Roof put his beliefs into action.

Oh I meant specifically how a Spaniard with smallpox ended up in Mexico.

My memory is that Cortés went to Mexico against the wishes of the Spanish governor of Cuba. The governor sent an army after Cortés into Mexico.

Cortés persuaded this army that there was more glory and riches to be had in Mexico then there were in dragging him back to Cuba and...ended up with the army he needed due to the governor's opposition.

One of the soldiers sent to stop him though had come down with smallpox though...and it was this vector that led to Cortés spreading the disease (again unknowingly).

Oh, I see what you mean. That's my recollection of events as well.

It's also my understanding (and I find this funny in a dark sort of way) that of the new army that joined up with Cortes, most of them died soon after. When they all marched back to Tenochtitlan, that was just before the Aztecs rose up and drove them out, and they had to swim across the lake to get away. The ones who'd been with Cortes from the beginning knew to travel light, but the newcomers plundered all they could first and when it came time to swim,....well.

The average internet crank was placing bets on how many hours Epstein had to live. The interrelations of the Europeans and the American Indians were very complex and it is sad that the left is trying to make that knowledge verboten.

My amusing fact of the day - the Iroquois introduced the Indian of Indian reservations. As successful warmongers they often had to decide what to do with defeated tribes and often moved those tribes to areas convenient for them. Of course in some cases they just plain exterminated their neighbors well.

Of course adult human sacrifice is NOWHERE near the worst thing the Aztecs did.

They had a "holiday" they celebrated by sacrificing children. But the god they were sacrificed to, as a water based god, required tears - the more the better and based on the remains we've found...they were very good at their tasks.

219 Hello ONT my old friend...

I was in Vernon, NJ today, where I learned of the legend of Action Park.

An enclosed water slide with a complete loop where customers ended up with bloody noses. A wheeled ride with no brakes that shot down a concrete-and-fiberglass track. A freshwater pool with giant waves that required lifeguards to rescue over two dozen people a day. New Jersey's Action Park, which quickly became known as "Accident Park", had it all. It was arguably America's most dangerous water park...

One extreme example was the park's Alpine Slide, which has been described by an old Action Park regular as, "essentially a giant track to rip people's skin off that was disguised as a kid's ride."...

One of the park's most notable attractions was the Tidal Wave Pool, one of the first to open in the United States, which quickly became one of the most dangerous rides at the park. Nicknamed, "The Grave Pool," it was filled with fresh water, not sea water, which made patrons less buoyant and left strong swimmers and non-swimmers alike literally in over their heads as waves that could reach 40 inches at high blast. The 12 lifeguards on duty rescued, on average, 30 people a day on high-traffic weekends.

As part of the anything goes atmosphere no one cared about the drinking age. Doctors said nearly everyone they treated for injuries was inebriated, no matter what age. A guy got electrocuted on a kayak ride because there was a live wire in the water.

Of course adult human sacrifice is NOWHERE near the worst thing the Aztecs did.

------------------

The Romans have a lot to do with the disappearance of human sacrifice in the Mediterranean. They occasionally engaged in a little of it themselves, but by and large they didn't like it and avoided it. And then they enforced that on everyone else in the region. It's worth noting that human sacrifice was one of the reasons why "Carthage delenda est!"

243 If things keep going the way they are? First exclusion from society. No jobs, no social connections, no public life for anyone that doesn't sign on with the left's agenda. And that agenda will get more and more extreme.

You're already seeing loyalty oaths in academia - if you want to be hired or promoted, you have to sign a written commitment to "diversity". if you think that your university should simply hire the best people available, no academic career for you.

Columbia's English Literature department got some flak for not placing a single Ph.D. graduate in a tenure-track position, yet still admitting 18 new Ph.D. students into the program.

A Columbia professor explained that they couldn't cut back on the number of students admitted,,because that would hurt the department's "diversity" goals.

Translation: Columbia's "diversity" admits are terrible, so if Columbia only admitted "diversity" candidates, it would destroy what was left of the English Department's reputation.

247 @225 Here's a question I've wondered about - why didn't the Viking exploration of North America lead to the spread of disease across the continent the way the later European presence did?

----------------

Probably a mix of a few things.

IIRC, the Vikings in the New World aren't believed to have interacted all that much with the locals (aside from exchanging arrows on occasion). So there was less opportunity for diseases to jump ethnicities. The colder climate probably helped. And the population confronting the Vikings was completely different from what the Spanish faced. The Spanish were working their way through heavily urbanized areas, with lots of people per square mile. The Vikings were living in a much more sparsely settled area, where infecting one local didn't necessarily mean that a thousand others would be exposed by the end of the day.

Posted by: junior at August 23, 2019 11:06 PM (Fp6vo)

248 In all seriousness, the Vikings were always a relatively small group of persons, on the fringes of society, and the ones that went to American were hardly in contact with the mainstream of Euroasian society. The Conquistadores and such were often scraped out of the teeming cities on the Mediterranean coast, port cities which would have been exposed to every disease on the Eurasion continent.

Don't really have a good answer to that. My immediate guess would be sheer luck--either the Vikings didn't have any carriers with them, or the two sides weren't in contact long enough for disease to spread, or both.

255 Iceland itself does not support a huge population

Iceland's population is so small that it couldn't maintain an endemic population of people with measles.

So historically, Iceland has been ravaged by periodic measles epidemics caused by an infected person off a ship, everyone gets immunity, and then there are no measles cases until enough non-immune people are born in Iceland to support a new epidemic.

But actually picking up some interesting stuff, like fission cross-sections, and little tidbits he tosses into the annotation, like who really came up with the implosion idea for a plutonium-based bomb [not who is sometimes credited], and brief commentary on personalities [Oppenheimer, Teller, Groves].

I think that's a different kind of backing down. Cortes intended to establish Spanish dominion over Mexico, so whacking another Indian city along the way cost him nothing personally.

I don't know if I'd go as far as you in assessing Cortes. He was not a nice man, but he was a good leader, and from what I've read, I'd much rather have dealt with him than say, Pizarro and a few others.

(don't remember which bunch it was that did this particular one, doesn't really matter) They believed that their gods talked to them when they hallucinated, so first they would drink some Jungle Juice they made up, and then - and this is the good part - they would take a large spine off a cactus, with barbs on it, and they would push it all the way through their own penis, and then they would work it back and forth til the blood really flowed, til the pain gave them really intense hallucinations. That's what really got them off.

Posted by: Charles the Simple at August 23, 2019 10:54 PM (w7U7L)

***********

Hi Charles (and Maegan). I'm a knitting designer. Ravelry isn't a blog, it's an entire website which hosts not only fora, but has massive database of yarns, yarn shops, retailers, and patterns (including mine, search Gingy and you'll find me there). I have opened shops on Loveknitting and Patternvine, to provide another option for those Ravelry-averse, but those are marketplace-only.

She might want to google Our Unraveled. It was a site made in the wake of Ravelry's anti-Trump announcement. I signed up but I haven't used it. I know of another but the name escapes me at the moment.

If she wants to email me to get my shop links, I can be found at gingy knits at that gee mail place- (you can figure that out, right?).

Some of us, a lot of us, just wanna knit. And the conservatives are the ones who a) don't bitch but merely leave; and b) actually spend money. My pattern shop on LoveKnitting made more money last week than my Ravelry shop in the entire month.

***
The Norse settlement in Newfoundland (and excursions further inland, to Greenland and points south) lasted only ten years and they had only limited engagement with the local peoples. Further, the Beothuk people were on the island of Newfoundland exclusively - which is 180 km from the mainland. It's a little far to go in a kayak to carry disease.

PS: If you ever get the chance, go to L'Anse aux Meadows. I got to stand in the exact places my ancestors stood. It was amazing.

The character is descended from the Mesoamerican natives, and needs to masquerade as a holy figure to get the pre-Colombus Mesoamericans to follow a particular plan. And the novel makes it pretty clear that part of the "make myself look like a holy figure" involves use of a barb as described above.

The character also notes that his ancestors were quite obviously nuts.

People really do believe that the whole thing was made up or didn't happen.

I remember there was a holocaust denier who died a while back - can't remember who he was; my vague recollection is that the only reason why the news noted his passing had something to do with how he died. And one of the articles about him that I glanced through mentioned that once while visiting a former Nazi concentration camp, he got into an argument with another visitor about whether the Holocaust really happened.

So, yeah, people really are that hard-headed.

376 > Actually, Quasar led the way with their Black Masking technology as a layer overlaying the Red/Blue/Green phosphor matrix.

One of the last really great U.S. televisions -- "works in a drawer". "Quasar. By Motorola."

Right around that time, Panasonic made their classic business move. Japanese products still had the reputation of being junk, so they went to RCA, et al and said "Look, our TVs are good, and cheap, too. We'll sell them to you for less than you can make them for yourself and you can just put an RCA label on them." The bean counters went for it.

Then Panasonic went to Sears, et al, and said "We'll sell you the same TVs we're selling to RCA for less than they charge you, and you can put a Kenmore label on them."

Not long after that, there weren't any non-Japanese TVs.

Bill Gates later ran the same game on IBM with MS-DOS.

But, the Nazis were also killing all the Romani, the Gypsies. They were in the camps as well.

Yet we have no specific word for when THEY were being exterminated.

And no one has ever even proposed a Gypsy homeland.

Bought this 42" Samsung flatscreen in 2007.

It's still a fantastic image, sharp as hell, fully saturated color palate.

I've seen the 4k displays, playing their ENHANCED 4k "demo" Blu-Ray disks. Yeah, awesome.

How much broadcast, cable cast, sat cast, etc. cast out there, is IN 4k format, much less the new hawt 8k freshness?

I'll likely upgrade in a year or two. Buy 4k, and know that the snobs will consider it already obsolete.

But it's a fool's errand to spend many times more on a still scarce format that won't be common until your new TV purchase is 'bout ready for the trash bin.

Buy ONLY after the new format is in Common Distribution. Sooner, and you're simply spending vanity bucks.

The Itanic forecasts were some of the worst -- not as bad as federal govt. budget estimates, but pretty bad.

Look at the charts for "projected Itanium sales" vs the reality.

Itanium was something else, and gave Chipzilla some comeupance. The Itanic was going to be the killer 64-bit chip, the one that would replace the x86 architecture. It was totally different.

I remember at the time, late 90s, I was all hepped up for the new Intel 64-bit instruction set, and looked at it. I MEGLO'd. "Huh, this is totally different". And ridiculously complicated.

And then AMD came out with 64-bit extensions to the x86 instruction set, known as AMD64, x64 and x86_64.

And that was the one that became the standard 64-bit system. Intel had to copy it, with a standard joke being Intel's version was the "iAMD64", which was a real slap to Intel.

Intel realized it was dead way before now, but HP had invested so much it it, and that is what kept Intel making it for so many years.

The control system for the T-stat is 24VAC, driven off a control transformer. It's not dangerous for electric shock, but you can short them out and blow the little fuses for the thing, which means opening up the unit.

Some simple heating systems using "mV" thermostats, driven off a "thermopile" (enough thermocouples to generate enough voltage and current) driven by the pilot light.

450 The arrest %s are from DOJ latest data release, I think.

There's an invisible [because suppressed/ignored] crime wave occurring across the country involving illegal aliens, many of them repeat offenders [normal pattern with criminals], turbo-charged by "sanctuary" lawlessness. This is apart from the crime wave of DUIs including those resulting in mayhem/homicide, and of course the enormous ID theft involved in illegal employment.

ONT so maybe it's safe to not self-censor. While the Dems are unspeakably and despicably complicit, and the GOP [95%] is *little better* [oh, yes], the administration is largely a failure on this [and is doing literally nothing, politically, to even prepare the ground to do anything about it].

And the country doesn't give a f**k - it doesn't affect them, directly, negatively, immediately, so it's not happening [and the collapse of anything resembling a press keeps everyone nicely uninformed about what's going on].

And we won't raise the topic of the ongoing constitutional trainwreck as the DOJ/WH haplessly further the grotesque transformation into a court-run, "sanctuary"-enabled mess through their inaction and mindless submission to anything barfed up by even a single lawless "judge".

451 Well, I am off to bed. Started the poor wretched Panhard up today, and after much rowing with the shift lever, backed it out of the driveway, and drove it over by the shop. Fired up the shop vac, and began vacuuming up all the broken glass from the back window (presumably a rock strike from the lawnmower). The shop vac cacked out. Done like dinner, it is.

So I abandoned the window glass cleanup, and turned to the sagging engine mounts. It had a pair of thick rubber biscuits mounted such that all the load on them was a shear load. Not real bright, guys. I removed the old biscuits, and began fabricating angle brackets so that I could use a pair of Studebaker rubber biscuits, set vertically, so loaded in compression, not shear. One side is now done, and the engine remains supported by a jack. And it's all bolt-in, so it could be put back to original, should anyone care to do so. This is an old rally car, so it came to me modified in some respects.

Everyone knows there is a breakdown of basic law and order, yet the GOP will NOT make it an issue.

It would sweep them into HUGE gains in both the House and Senate, and ensure Trump's reelection.

Yet, they don't talk about the BASIC problems.

The only reason I can think of, is they actually LIKE the status quo, not understanding what it is doing to our society.

Get the t-state fixed but meanwhile get a space heater - they're convenient and often a good option anyway. A few miles off the coast further south, but we rarely use the heat now, just a space heater or two, plus sweats and good warmth boots for the "cold" [ha] nights in "winter".

Okay, Morticia, I found the installation instructions for those 4000 series T-stats. It looks like a simple, non-heat pump system.

Turning the heat on is probably as simple as jumping the R(red) to the W(white) terminal.

What type of furnace is it? Oil, gas?

On those, the blower is usually turned on by the system itself when the plenum comes up to temperature. Otherwise, you'll connect the G (green) fan lead to R as well.

Only do this if you're comfortable with messing with it.

remove line feed.

By jumping, or "hot-wiring" it, the heat will run continuously until you break the connection. Run it until it gets warm enough, the break it. Until you get the T-stat replaced.

And you can pick up one at any big box Lowes/Home Depot, etc store.

480 Not to gross you guys out, but a two weeks ago I thought - from visual evidence when I turned to flush the terlit - that I had worms. A visit to the doctor, tests, and finally identifying the critter in the terlit (Brachyiulus pusillus, which are everywhere around these parts this time of year) indicated in short order that I did not. So all's well worm-wise, thank goodness.

I'm just really surprised at the effect it had on me. I was absolutely freaked and creeped out, and still haven't recovered! Depressed would probably describe my current symptoms, and that surprises me too, since I've been through an ample ration of reverses in my life and have always stayed up-beat. Apparently the ol' emotional reserves, like pretty much everything else, just ain't what they used to be.
Good to know, I suppose. Guess I'd better take it into account in the future.

Maybe, it extreme rhetoric and rubs me the wrong way too. But these things usually have a pretty short half-life. But, notice that recently Democratic candidates have come to saying a vote for Trump is a vote for white supremacy. Even worse than what Trump said about disloyalty to Jews, imo.

https://youtu.be/8gHGBUj1i2M

But in the actual report CBP issued a statement that they'd avoid the cemetery that's along the path of proposed levee-wall. So, just speculation. Only the headline and chyron misleadingly said "Veterans graves to be "Dug Up" for border wall" like it was happening for real. Saw lots of Nevertrumpers sharing the story and saying how disrespectful Trump was to the military.

...but, then I got thinking. These are WWI and II veterans, not soldiers killed in action. So, wouldn't that pretty much classify every cemetery in America? And I pulled up this place on Google maps.. and its tiny, one acre of an old church tucked between a couple residential plots where everything else around for miles is farmland.

26°05'10.6"N 98°11'04.6"W

Anyways, they ought to avoid this place and just let the wall have a 1,000 foot gap. The Boarder Patrol HQ is only a mile to the west anyways.

510 I have been listening to and studying the Christian Faith in the spirit of the church fathers. The "obey your husbands," portion is related to obeying in the ways of faith. Christianity was radical in that women, slaves, etc. were all equal in the eyes of God whereas other faiths and political systems viewed them as non entities. Remember, early times preists could marry and had families (St. Peter himself was married). But women could be married. Males were deacons, presbyters, bishops, etc, so it was obey in the ways of faith and men were expected to protect at all costs including laying down their lives for their wives as Jesus died for his followers. Celebacy of preists and such began being born out of ascetic movements which most rapidly grew in Egypt. Monastic communities arose as people left cities when they viewed some churches as moving astray and more people took ascetic like vows.
