347 Oregon Muse: What chess app do you use?

Posted by: Dennis Johnson at August 17, 2019 08:39 PM (x+pTm)

I use Chessbase v. 13 to maintain my database of chess problems I think may be suitable for the AoSHQ Chess Thread. I also have Fritz. v. 11, which I suppose I can hook into Chessbase, but I haven't spent any effort in figuring out how to do it because I'm lazy.

Instead, I use the Stockfish engine with the Tarrasch Chess GUI (available from http://www.triplehappy.com) for when I need to test out possible problem solutions.

Intermediate Problem - Black To Play (1034)

Goal: Black can exchange his knight for White's queen
Hint: Set up a discovered attack

Hope to see you all next week!

___________

Note: that cryptic line of letters and numbers you see underneath each board diagram is a representation of the position in what is known as "Forsyth-Edwards Notation", or F.E.N. It's actually readable by humans. Most computer applications nowadays can read FEN, so those of you who may want to study the position, you can copy the line of FEN and paste into your chess app and it should automatically recreate the position on its display board. Or, Windows users can just "triple click" on it and the entire line will be highlighted so you can copy and paste it into your chess app.

___________

So that about wraps it up for this week. Chess thread tips, suggestions, bribes, rumors, threats, and insults may be sent to my yahoo address: OregonMuse little-a-in-a-circle yahoo dott com.

Possibly the thing on the Corporate Leftist Machine that angers me most the past 3 years, whose engine is the Democrat Media, is how they ignore and denigrate Melania Trump.

She is an exceptionally fine human being in addition to being gorgeous. And yet, I believe every major fashion publication in America has yet to put her likeness on the cover. In 3 years. An international model who is stunning, not once.

I won't go into how badly it angers me, because of that red flag law passed in my state a few months ago. The same red flag law that does not require an actual court order to take my guns away.

Haha, they wouldn't find most of them anyway.

69 Bandersnatch, can you recommend any Italian films that have English subtitles?

Not a expert, but...

Two Women. Post-war chaos in Italy with Sophia Loren and her daughter trying to survive impossible conditions and abuse. I think Sophia won an Oscar for that.

Seven Beauties. Again, war/post-war, Giancarlo Giannini is very judgmental about how his sisters should behave until all the shit hits the fan and he realizes that survival is enough.

Mediterraneo. Sheesh, still in the war. An Italian deserter hops all around the Med. He keeps saying "una razza una faccia" (one race one face) to all the Greeks and Lebanese and Moroccans he meets, because the peoples of the Med all look alike. Then they all fuck him over.

La Dolce Vita. It's been a long time. They splash in the Fontana di Trevi setting a bad example for tourists ever since.

Iere, Oggi, Domani (yesterday today tomorrow). Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni do things.

These are all ancient. I was watching a recent TV series called My Brilliant Friend. Modern, but again set in post-war Sicily. They speak a mix of Sicilian and Italian. I still have some episodes recorded but I forget where it's from. I think HBO or SHO.

95 Tonight is fishy fishy, right?

So, I'll just post this here for those looking for a good movie to watch tonight:

Saw "Angel Has Fallen" yesterday-

I'm a fan of the "...Has Fallen" series, so I had high hopes for this installment, and-

was not disappointed at all.

Tremendously entertaining movie from beginning to end.

Very fast pace. Barely stops to take a breath. Great action - the opening assassination attempt is simultaneously horrifying and awesome. Great directing.

Excellent acting all around.

I really like Gerard Butler as an action hero. Dude, is no Hollywood pretty boy. He looks like a thug. And real or no, his face looks like he's seen pain in his life.

Script is very good except when it's not. Some character motivations are shall we say unclear in the service of serving up big action and confrontations. SJW posturing kept to the barest of minimums.

If you want a pure popcorn adrenaline action movie in the style of the best 80s-90s action movies-

Go see "Angel Has Fallen".

Check it out.

Extra!

Stay for a silly but funny scene in the middle of the credits.

Bonus!

All of the "..Has Fallen" movies are excellent fun and highly entertaining. "London Has Fallen" is probably my fave. But, "Olympus Has Fallen" is great fun as well.

96 I had no idea that the book The Goldfinch was made into a film - and set for a 2019 September release. I guess I shouldn't be surprised by this since much of the book is overloaded with NYC leftist ego-stroke (ofc right wing terrorism.) Boris and Theo's grifter- father being the only mildly interesting characters in a 800 page book full of ..... meh.

In the book Boris is a pasty, gaunt, Ukrainian with greasy hair that looks like it was self-cut with rusty sheep shears - certainly not the mildly gay looking metrosexual soyboi shown in the trailer. Pippa's bedroom is not a sun-drenched Jane Austin boudoir - it's a dark, gritty, subterranean hovel. Hobie is a 6'3" WASPy white guy, not a round-faced black dude.

bleh.

preview of the movie thread: one of the things that makes Flash Gordon so much fun (besides the soundtrack by Queen) is that it was made by two parallel production crews - one in England that always wanted it to be a comedic spoof, and another one in Italy that wanted it to be dark and scary. At the end the two teams work just got mashed together, and you get things like Princess Aura being threatened with horrible gruesome torture, and then it turns into a pillow fight.
