Ruth Bader Ginsburg Undergoes Treatment For Cancerous Tumor On Pancreas

Cancer again.

Headline corrected: I thought she had surgery to remove the tumor; but I think now they only gave her radiation therapy.

A friend speculates they avoided surgery because the negatives (dying due to surgical intervention) outweighed the positives. But that's uninformed speculation.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has just completed three weeks of radiation treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, the U.S. Supreme Court disclosed Friday.

The radiation therapy, conducted on an outpatient basis, began Aug. 5, shortly after a localized cancerous tumor was discovered on Ginsburg's pancreas. The treatment included the insertion of a stent in Ginsburg's bile duct, according to a statement issued by the court.

Doctors at Sloan Kettering said further tests showed no evidence of disease elsewhere in the body. The treatment comes just months after Ginsburg was operated on for lung cancer last December. The 86-year-old justice has been treated for cancer in various forms over the past 20 years.

The tumor was confirmed as cancerous:

The abnormality was first detected after a routine blood test in early July, and a biopsy performed on July 31 at Sloan Kettering confirmed a localized malignant tumor.

I don't wish anyone ill health, with maybe a few exceptions who I can't even think of right now, but those who keep blabbering about "Muh Judges" and how we should have let Hillary Clinton win in 2016 and let whatever Democrat win in 2020 should know the survival rates for pancreatic cancer:

Buh Muh Principuhls, huh?

Caveat: Commenter "Sanfranpsycho" says that a tumor on the pancreas is not necessarily the same thing as pancreatic cancer. I assumed it was, and I (thankfully) do not have any knowledge of pancreatic cancer.

But this quote from shibumi, combined with the doctors checking to see if the cancer had spread to other parts of the body, suggests to me that this is pancreatic cancer:

"Pancreatic cancer is a disease in which healthy cells in the pancreas stop working correctly and grow out of control. These cancerous cells can build up and form a mass called a tumor. A cancerous tumor is malignant, meaning it can grow and spread to other parts of the body."

Another commenter points out that cancers spread throughout the body, so that a cancer generated by one organ, say the skin or colon, can spread or lodge itself to another one.

I don't know either way.

Dueling Doctors: In the comments, two people who are either doctors or medical technicians (or who say they are) have differing opinions:

Two possibilities.

1)Primary pancreatic CA. Treatment is the Whipple procedure, a devastating surgery. At her age would be nearly unthinkable. Radiation would only be for show.

2)Metastatic cancer to the pancreas. Treatment would be according to the primary, perhaps why radiation was used. Surgery is less commonly used.

With her history, #2 is far more likely.

[speaking] as an Interventional Rad who puts in biliary stents, she has pancreatic cancer

The average octogenarian cancer patient to show up with a new pancreatic tumor might get a stent if they're lucky, but otherwise they are being sent off to hospice and being made as comfortable as possible.

I'll plug my site - https://breastcancersharing.com/ - radiation is covered there with links to cancer sites explaining in more detail. I'm still undergoing my treatment until the end of the year and then fingers crossed to check it.

My father just recently obtained non-hodgkin's lymphoma and they got rid of it in very little time with only radiation and chemo - no surgery.

A friend - who was a colonel in the US military just got the bad news she had the pancreas cancer, with only 3 months to live. She had a sore stomach, was diagnosed right away, and told 3 months. 154 also, a tumor in the pancreas doesn't necessarily mean it was a pancreatic cancer. Cancer from another site can metastize to the pancreas. For example skin cancer, melanoma, occasionally metastizes to the pancreas.

296 I wish the woman no ill will personally, but if she lasts till 2020 the Dems will invoke the No SCOTUS Appointments In An Election Year clause of the Constitution.
And if I recall correctly the GOP has invoked that as well, so this will all probably hinge on the election

But the bigger issue (broken record time) WE NEED A CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT TO LIMIT SCOTUS TO 9. The current composition rests entirely on federal statute, and historic tradition. But historic tradition is now out the window and bet every nickel that as soon as the Dems obtain sufficient legislative power they will pack the Court with several new Judges to "balance" the Court.

The American replied, "Now that IS interesting, because I have a brother-in-law who's a queen."

Our Founders did not intend this at all, but until we have some sort of violent revolution, this is who really runs America.

The Supreme Court kept itself in check for the most part until Earl Warren, who ran for President and lost, and decided this was how he would run the country.

Ever since, liberalism keeps racking up victories through the SC.

444 I don't wish cancer on anyone either.

But one thing I know for sure, if she has been cycling through all of these cancers that people are mentioning and she has had a series of chemo treatments, no only are you sickly throughout that time, but you get what is called "chemo brain" or "chemo fog" where you lose your memory, and it usually stays in the system for a year.

So if she is also on pain meds and going through these treatments, she is nowhere near 100%.

In my case, I found I lost my short term memory - and it is taking quite a while to drain from my system.

No way she is able to do her job. No way. And they keep coddling her as if she's still all there. Shame on her for not - like everyone is saying, stepping down and enjoying what little time she has. But she loves the power, it is way too obvious. Look how she preens in public. She's a "celebrity." They cannot give that up.

I'm a Catholic, but I know exactly what you mean. It is a tragic mistake for religious minorities to have this much power over a court, particularly when it so obviously comes at the expense of the majority nation. Catholics have certain points of dogma and cultural tradition in favor of their scholarship and legalism. But they need to let American Protestants make their own laws, because they are the majority.

481 The fact that she already had lung cancer just this year, and has had other cancers in earlier years, suggests to me that the cancer on/in her pancreas is "metastatic," meaning that it spread there from somewhere else, and did not originally originate in the pancreas. And that once one has cancer that is metastacizing, you are essentially doomed. It'll just keep popping up everywhere, with increasing frequency. They can fight them off one by one, but as you age and as the cancers/tumors increase their frequency, it ultimately becomes a futile battle and they give up.

Same thing happened to a relative of mine who was, coincidentally, 86 year old too. first they detected it in her stomach, then her bones, then her head, then here and there and there and it was obvious it was unstoppable. Died 4 months later.

My God, you have figured it out.

In a couple of months, maybe weeks, all of the "news that matters" will be gathered in some Ed Woods looking science lab-y thing.

RGB will be in one chair, AOC in another. Something that looks suspiciously like a 1960s beauty shop curler hair dryer will be on each of their heads. Lights will flash, buzzing sounds, pops, a FLASH and smoke will arise from the now burnt out device.

BUT WAIT!

The renowned chief Harvard scientist, fresh off a surprise billion dollar grant to fund all of his future research and mansions and private jets etc will pronounce the consciousness transfer a full success! AOC is now RGB!

Sadly, the machine, resembling a spray painted refrigerator box, was destroyed in the process and can never be used again, or even tested.

Chuck Todd, Chris Wallace, that chick that looks like a dude, that other chick, the potato head guy... all will CONFIRM the success to the American people. Any "conspiracy theory" trolls questioning he success, or making an obvious meme, will be digitally disappeared from social media.

RGB will begin the next 50 years of her term on the Supreme Court.

While I disagree with her judicial philosophy, I'll pray for her health - no one should have to go through what she is likely dealing with. 553 A mental exercise: Two people you know nothing about except one's an Evangelical and one is a Catholic. Which do you think is more conservative?

We have Ted Cruz, Evangelical, vs the late Phyllis Schlafly ... for those we do know.

The current Pope is Catholic and I wouldn't trust him with any important decision.

Christians are Christians, Roman Catholics are Roman Catholics - the Catholics made that distinction abundantly clear when they spent several centuries torturing and murdering Christians because they weren't Catholics.

Many of the Catholics crossing the border now have more in common with Voo doo and other pagan syncretizations than anything that resembles orthodox Christianity.

And no, the American Religion is not Christian either.

So if one excludes the American Religion, we would have jurists who subscribe to the Imago Dei, human flourishing and understanding the origins of Rights. They would also understand what Just Justice is, and wouldn't confuse social justice or social marxism as an acceptable form of justice.

With Catholics, because it is similar to Islam in that it isn't just a religion, its a political system and culture, there is no guarantee that the jurist would keep the ideology of this nation's Framers. Likely would have the judgment of your typical eastern seaboard leftist or an amalgamation of central american socialist catholicism.

We went to go look at her and it was love at first sight. As rickb223 says -- you make room for more. She is a handful, a tyrant to the dog yet loves to cuddle with her, and is full of character. I'm glad we got her. Do I catch myself calling her by our previous cat's name? All the time. Just makes me appreciate what they both brought to me.

594 I hope the Chief Justice will allow RGB all the time off she needs to rest, recover, be with her family, and focus on herself. The Court can manage just fine with only 8 justices for a while. Nobody should pressure a sick old woman to continue working while she is fighting any kind of severe illness. Similarly, no one should pressure the sick old woman to resign. The example of Sandra Day O'Conner -- first woman of SCOTUS, appointed by Reagan, who retired gracefully in 2006 and continues to live and serve -- need not apply. There are certainly precedents for Justices to hang onto the robes until carried out of the courthouse on a gurney, and Justice Ginsburg can determine for herself whether she will follow the O'Conner, or William Rehnquist, path.

595 RBG already had Whipple seven or eight years ago on localized pancreatic tumor. If this is a resurgence of that cancer then she is in great difficulty. Pancreatic cancer is very resistant to chemo and radiation. Two of my cousins passed from it within months of diagnosis.
If it is secondary tumor the result will depend on the type of primary cancer. My wife passed from stage 4 melanoma. A secondary tumor on her pancreas was the killing agent. We were told radiation treatment would fo more harm than good as melanoma, like pancreatic, is very resistant to radiation. She had same manifestations as Jimmy Carter. She received a new drug, Yervoy, which failed. He received yervoy AND keytruda which was not yet available for ordinary patients. He survived.
This is not a good situation for RBG. I wish her no pain and suffering, but I wish, not just for political reasons, that she retire to be with family and friends. And to be in a place where meds can greatly limit her pain.

To start with, the type of cancer is known - it was confirmed by biopsy. If it had a good prognosis, it would be in their interest to publish the type.

Second, saying the tumor is "on the pancreas" is odd phrasing. It sounds designed to imply it is
not primary pancreatic cancer, without (falsely?) stating it.

Last, stating that the biopsy "confirmed a localized malignant tumor" is just rubbish. If a biopsy shows malignancy, it raises the possibility of distant metastasis that cannot be ruled out by that biopsy alone.

Just some thoughts; it is possible all of this is just sloppy, ignorant journalism... Draw your own conclusion.

601 Glad I missed this thread. Just got my post Whipple wife home from pontoon ride on the lake. That 7% number is new to me.

Oh, she may be weak in body and sharp in mind.

604 Given what she has done to the US, her rewards await her in a place where it is freezing cold. The ninth ring is noted for that.

605 I am two years cancer-free but still getting checked every 4 months.

I wouldn't wish cancer on Hitler, Stalin or Mao. It's horrible. It's not something to joke about.

However, RBG should retire and spend the rest of her life with her family. If she's getting any form of chemo in addition to the radiation, it can negatively affect her mental acuity.

606 That slime Axelrod is saying a vacancy will rip the country apart. And by using the word "vacancy" I think he means "Senate Democrats on the judiciary committee"

607 RBG has 2 months max left to live.

608 The fact that she's had most of her pancreas removed because of pancreatic cancer is most likely why they avoided surgery this time.

609 Long time lurker here. My dad died of this disease. Anyone with an ounce of humanity and who has had any personal exposure to pancreatic cancer would not wish it on another human being. You can't say "I'm glad he/she has pancreatic cancer" and still be a human being. It is an ass kicking, ravaging disease and there's nothing you can do about it. My father was diagnosed around Thanksgiving and was gone by St. Patrick's Day. He suffered every single one of those days, sometimes horribly. We were told that his experience was typical.

Pray, fervently, that you do not suffer this fate.
