Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | Ruth Bader Ginsburg Undergoes Treatment For Cancerous Tumor On PancreasHeadline corrected: I thought she had surgery to remove the tumor; but I think now they only gave her radiation therapy. A friend speculates they avoided surgery because the negatives (dying due to surgical intervention) outweighed the positives. But that's uninformed speculation.Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has just completed three weeks of radiation treatment at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York, the U.S. Supreme Court disclosed Friday. The radiation therapy, conducted on an outpatient basis, began Aug. 5, shortly after a localized cancerous tumor was discovered on Ginsburg's pancreas. The treatment included the insertion of a stent in Ginsburg's bile duct, according to a statement issued by the court. Doctors at Sloan Kettering said further tests showed no evidence of disease elsewhere in the body. The treatment comes just months after Ginsburg was operated on for lung cancer last December. The 86-year-old justice has been treated for cancer in various forms over the past 20 years. The tumor was confirmed as cancerous: The abnormality was first detected after a routine blood test in early July, and a biopsy performed on July 31 at Sloan Kettering confirmed a localized malignant tumor.I don't wish anyone ill health, with maybe a few exceptions who I can't even think of right now, but those who keep blabbering about "Muh Judges" and how we should have let Hillary Clinton win in 2016 and let whatever Democrat win in 2020 should know the survival rates for pancreatic cancer: "Pancreatic cancer is a disease in which healthy cells in the pancreas stop working correctly and grow out of control. These cancerous cells can build up and form a mass called a tumor. A cancerous tumor is malignant, meaning it can grow and spread to other parts of the body."Another commenter points out that cancers spread throughout the body, so that a cancer generated by one organ, say the skin or colon, can spread or lodge itself to another one. I don't know either way. Dueling Doctors: In the comments, two people who are either doctors or medical technicians (or who say they are) have differing opinions: Two possibilities. 1)Primary pancreatic CA. Treatment is the Whipple procedure, a devastating surgery. At her age would be nearly unthinkable. Radiation would only be for show. 2)Metastatic cancer to the pancreas. Treatment would be according to the primary, perhaps why radiation was used. Surgery is less commonly used. With her history, #2 is far more likely. [speaking] as an Interventional Rad who puts in biliary stents, she has pancreatic cancer Comments(Jump to bottom of comments)1

If this was a newly diagnosed pancreatic cancer, other than putting a stent through it to alleviate any symptoms associated with obstruction, do you think doctors would be subjecting a frail 86-year-old patient with a history of multiple other cancers to radiation treatment if they weren't desperate to get her meat-husk across the November 2020 finish line?
The average octogenarian cancer patient to show up with a new pancreatic tumor might get a stent if they're lucky, but otherwise they are being sent off to hospice and being made as comfortable as possible. From experience, sometimes they will do the radiation if the cancer is really bad and want to shrink it pre-surgery, OR if they can control it and zap it away from the radiation and/or do chemo.
I'll plug my site - https://breastcancersharing.com/ - radiation is covered there with links to cancer sites explaining in more detail. I'm still undergoing my treatment until the end of the year and then fingers crossed to check it. My father just recently obtained non-hodgkin's lymphoma and they got rid of it in very little time with only radiation and chemo - no surgery. A friend - who was a colonel in the US military just got the bad news she had the pancreas cancer, with only 3 months to live. She had a sore stomach, was diagnosed right away, and told 3 months. She is already suffering and took a military transport home because flying commercial was out of the question. She had a nurse fly with her. She had also been a nurse. Very sad. A wonderful lady. And if I recall correctly the GOP has invoked that as well, so this will all probably hinge on the election But the bigger issue (broken record time) WE NEED A CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT TO LIMIT SCOTUS TO 9. The current composition rests entirely on federal statute, and historic tradition. But historic tradition is now out the window and bet every nickel that as soon as the Dems obtain sufficient legislative power they will pack the Court with several new Judges to "balance" the Court. I don't wish cancer on anyone either.
But one thing I know for sure, if she has been cycling through all of these cancers that people are mentioning and she has had a series of chemo treatments, no only are you sickly throughout that time, but you get what is called "chemo brain" or "chemo fog" where you lose your memory, and it usually stays in the system for a year. So if she is also on pain meds and going through these treatments, she is nowhere near 100%. In my case, I found I lost my short term memory - and it is taking quite a while to drain from my system. No way she is able to do her job. No way. And they keep coddling her as if she's still all there. Shame on her for not - like everyone is saying, stepping down and enjoying what little time she has. But she loves the power, it is way too obvious. Look how she preens in public. She's a "celebrity." They cannot give that up. Posted by: artisanal 'ette at August 23, 2019 03:59 PM (vEIlU) 445

She's had colon, pancreas and lung tumors already. Pathology has not been released for any of them as far as I know, so it is hard to tell what she's got on the pancreas right now. Usually pancreas primary tumors kill pretty fast. She did not get a Whipple with her first pancreatic tumor either which mitigates against a pancreatic primary Last time.

Trump's female selection is yet another Catholic. Posted by: Blue Bird of F'ing Joy at August 23, 2019 03:56 PM (lD3vL) I'm a Catholic, but I know exactly what you mean. It is a tragic mistake for religious minorities to have this much power over a court, particularly when it so obviously comes at the expense of the majority nation. Catholics have certain points of dogma and cultural tradition in favor of their scholarship and legalism. But they need to let American Protestants make their own laws, because they are the majority. The fact that she already had lung cancer just this year, and has had other cancers in earlier years, suggests to me that the cancer on/in her pancreas is "metastatic," meaning that it spread there from somewhere else, and did not originally originate in the pancreas. And that once one has cancer that is metastacizing, you are essentially doomed. It'll just keep popping up everywhere, with increasing frequency. They can fight them off one by one, but as you age and as the cancers/tumors increase their frequency, it ultimately becomes a futile battle and they give up.

The two doctors you mention actually do not have differing opinions, so much as the first one just gave a more detailed answer. The Whipple is devastating in a younger patient, really hard post-80 to justify it unless the patient is quite robust. In any case, she has had multiple bouts with cancer, which is never a good sign. While I disagree with her judicial philosophy, I'll pray for her health - no one should have to go through what she is likely dealing with. A mental exercise: Two people you know nothing about except one's an Evangelical and one is a Catholic. Which do you think is more conservative?
We have Ted Cruz, Evangelical, vs the late Phyllis Schlafly ... for those we do know. The current Pope is Catholic and I wouldn't trust him with any important decision. Christians are Christians, Roman Catholics are Roman Catholics - the Catholics made that distinction abundantly clear when they spent several centuries torturing and murdering Christians because they weren't Catholics. Many of the Catholics crossing the border now have more in common with Voo doo and other pagan syncretizations than anything that resembles orthodox Christianity. And no, the American Religion is not Christian either. So if one excludes the American Religion, we would have jurists who subscribe to the Imago Dei, human flourishing and understanding the origins of Rights. They would also understand what Just Justice is, and wouldn't confuse social justice or social marxism as an acceptable form of justice. With Catholics, because it is similar to Islam in that it isn't just a religion, its a political system and culture, there is no guarantee that the jurist would keep the ideology of this nation's Framers. Likely would have the judgment of your typical eastern seaboard leftist or an amalgamation of central american socialist catholicism. Whipple is only done when acted it is inoperable he cancer is considered operable aka curable. it has not spread from the pancreas and doesn't obstruct the bile ducts or encase the mesenteric arteries or veins. once the ducts are obstructed it has spread and is inoperable.that is when we put in stents as a palliative treatment. I hope the Chief Justice will allow RGB all the time off she needs to rest, recover, be with her family, and focus on herself. The Court can manage just fine with only 8 justices for a while. Nobody should pressure a sick old woman to continue working while she is fighting any kind of severe illness. Similarly, no one should pressure the sick old woman to resign. The example of Sandra Day O'Conner -- first woman of SCOTUS, appointed by Reagan, who retired gracefully in 2006 and continues to live and serve -- need not apply. There are certainly precedents for Justices to hang onto the robes until carried out of the courthouse on a gurney, and Justice Ginsburg can determine for herself whether she will follow the O'Conner, or William Rehnquist, path.

RBG already had Whipple seven or eight years ago on localized pancreatic tumor. If this is a resurgence of that cancer then she is in great difficulty. Pancreatic cancer is very resistant to chemo and radiation. Two of my cousins passed from it within months of diagnosis.
If it is secondary tumor the result will depend on the type of primary cancer. My wife passed from stage 4 melanoma. A secondary tumor on her pancreas was the killing agent. We were told radiation treatment would fo more harm than good as melanoma, like pancreatic, is very resistant to radiation. She had same manifestations as Jimmy Carter. She received a new drug, Yervoy, which failed. He received yervoy AND keytruda which was not yet available for ordinary patients. He survived. This is not a good situation for RBG. I wish her no pain and suffering, but I wish, not just for political reasons, that she retire to be with family and friends. And to be in a place where meds can greatly limit her pain. Re her cancer - not enough info available to prognosticate. This could be a recurrence of her previously diagnosed pancreatic cancer - was it an adenocarcinoma or a neuroendocrine tumor? Could it be a Metastasis from her colonic carcinoma? What blood test was abnormal? Was the tumour compressing the pancreas, in the vicinity of the pancreas, or within the organ itself? Does she have jaundice from bile duct obstruction? The only thing we know is nobody lives forever

Combining medical knowledge, awareness of media bias and logic, it sounds like they are sugar-coating the situation.
To start with, the type of cancer is known - it was confirmed by biopsy. If it had a good prognosis, it would be in their interest to publish the type. Second, saying the tumor is "on the pancreas" is odd phrasing. It sounds designed to imply it is not primary pancreatic cancer, without (falsely?) stating it. Last, stating that the biopsy "confirmed a localized malignant tumor" is just rubbish. If a biopsy shows malignancy, it raises the possibility of distant metastasis that cannot be ruled out by that biopsy alone. Just some thoughts; it is possible all of this is just sloppy, ignorant journalism... Draw your own conclusion. Posted by: Dr. Lurker, MD at August 23, 2019 06:08 PM (5cBBt) 601

You can't say "I'm glad he/she has pancreatic cancer" and still be a human being. It is an ass kicking, ravaging disease and there's nothing you can do about it.
