Sefton: sefton at cutjibnewsletter.com | LOL: Gillette's #WokeMarketing About Toxic Masculinity Went So Well That They're Completely Flipping The Script And Now Making Ads About... Male FirefightersOh, so sometimes Toxic Masculinity saves lives and builds civilizations and stuff, too? I did not know that. I guess Gillette realized that after writing down $8 billion on their brand value. PS, you're dead to me and no number of ads about firefighters or soldiers will resurrect you.Razor brand Gillette says it is "shifting the spotlight from social issues to local heroes" after an ad delving into "toxic masculinity" caused a customer backlash. The new ad, which launched last week, stars Australian firefighter and personal trainer Ben Ziekenheiner. "I've been a firefighter for 19 years," Mr Ziekenheiner says in the ad. "People sometimes ask if it's scary. It can be, but like anyone who has a job to do, you prepare -- not just in terms of your equipment but also mentally and physically."Now get this: The ad spruiks the brand's SkinGuard range, highlighting the issue of sensitive skin for men who shave every day -- including firefighters, who are required to be clean-shaven as it enables a proper seal for their breathing mask. "We have a very clear strategy when it comes to how we authentically connect with our consumers," said Manu Airan, associate brand director for Gillette Australia and New Zealand.Authentic. Authentic. Now where do I remember seeing that word, in the contest of Gillette's brand management? Oh yes. In an interview with Gillette's woke marketing guru, three months ago. It was just three months ago that Gillette's #Woke #Feminist brand managers were babbling about Social Justice being the brand's "authentic" corporate voice. Tell us more about the thinking behind the Gillette ad. What was really the impetus behind it? I think there are a couple of things. Certainly, we encourage all of our brands to find their authentic voice in how they want to communicate with consumers and stakeholders."Stakeholder" is a political term, not a business term. It does not mean shareholder. It's a political term of art, a euphemism, for special interest pressure groups. When Hillary Clinton talks about "conferencing" with "stakeholders," she means Planned Parenthood. Note: Commenters in the business of business tell me I'm wrong, and that "stakeholders" has been incorporated into CorporateSpeak for at least 15 years. So while it can be motivated by current events and current conversations that are happening, it still has to be what's right for the business, for the brands, and for the consumers they serve. Otherwise it's unsustainable, or even worse, it shows up as artificial. You don't say, Corporate NPC. The Corporate NPC redefines the completely-political euphemism "stakeholder" to mean the Gillette Razor Community, whatever that could possibly mean. The reality is today, stakeholders of all kinds, whether it's consumers, investors, or employees, they expect more from brands than just selling products. They want to know what they believe in. They want to know their values. But do they? Or did you just want to try a new branding strategy to jumpstart your dying brand? They want to know the people behind them and the actions they're taking on important issues. And that was the impetus for Gillette. So it had been the case that attacking traditional masculinity while celebrating a very non-traditional form of femininity -- namely, rebranding morbid obesity as healthy and confident at any size -- was Gillette's "authentic" corporate voice.
And now firefighters and traditional ideas about masculinity are its "authentic" voice, suddenly? Here's a thought I just had: Maybe neither of these poses were "authentic corporate voices." Maybe corporations that sell you widgets don't have voices of any kind, and certainly not "authentic" ones. I guess having to take an $8 billion writedown on your brand's value can spur you to reevaluate what your "authentic" corporate voice really is, huh? Will Gillette return to featuring more fit women in its womens shaving product adverts, I wonder? Will Gillette soon discover that cute women with good calves were its "authentic" corporate voice all along? By the way -- Gillette showed its actual authentic corporate voice when it announced that declining sales were "an opportunity" for them. Mr Airan said while shaving frequency had been reducing, "for us it's an opportunity". "Despite shaving frequency decreasing our sales have increased (thanks to) the innovation we are bringing to consumers' unmet needs," he said. The authentic corporate voice? F***ing lying about everything." Your weekly reminder that this group of useless liars and crap-merchants is, as far as the National Review crew and Establishment GOP are concerned, the only people who have full free speech rights in America. Thus Spruik Zarathustra: I completely bleeped over the sentence "The ad spruiks the brand's SkinGuard range..." Spruiks? Spruiks? Is it a typo or is this a real word? Well I don't know, but there is a word "spruik." spruik (third-person singular simple present spruiks, present participle spruiking, simple past and past participle spruiked) (transitive, Australia) To promote a thing or idea to another person. That article is indeed from an Australian source. Really? Why don't you shove your razors up your ass? Best part? In that part of the consumer product market it's very hard to win share. People are very loyal to their products. Those people are probably never coming back. Even if the product was free. They were already losing share on price. This just gave people another reason to switch. Maybe because they're one of the few sponsors for Blue Jays baseball games on TV so I've seen them alot more but those ads have been running here for a relatively long time. (Baseball season start?) Not that that justifies Gillette.
OT: I don't know how it works and if it's the Jays or how our version of the FCC controls buying advertising but the Jays advertising only has about eight advertisers and the same ads are shown over and over and over throughout a baseball game. My mom and me watched the homerun derby on Fox just to see more ads than the same ones we've seen literally thousands of times. Posted by: andycanuck at August 23, 2019 04:23 PM (Dh1wo) 39

Schick's commercial of the three gorgeous bikini models standing by the pool, with topaiary plants in front of their, uh, fronts. that they start trimming with razors , the best shape of a heart being done with a schick, is hilarious, non offensive, and makes you think, hmmm, if I"m going to be shaving there, let's have it look neat.

Here's the message I sent to Gillette at their website. I categorized it as a "testimonial" since "sarcastic screed" wasn't an option:
Dear Gillette, I guess this is kind of a testimonial so I have categorized it as such. I just wanted to let you know that this week I will finally exhaust my existing stockpile of Gillette shaving products. This is a milestone for me because it represents the first time in literally decades that I will not be replenishing those items with new Gillette products. Until your idiotic "Toxic Masculinity" ad I was perfectly satisfied with Gillette's products and had no motivation to give even a second thought to changing. I was a customer on autopilot who would almost certainly have continued my existing purchasing habits forever, had you permitted me to do so. Then someone in your fine organization decided that it would be a very clever thing to use advertising money to insult and lecture people like me in your customer base. You literally spent marketing money to gratuitously offend me and drive me to one of your competitors when not spending that money would have kept me with you for life! I'm still trying to figure out exactly where the profit in this strategy lies, but I guess you guys are a lot smarter than I am and you must know your stuff. In any event, I just wanted to say good luck with the new marketing direction, and goodbye for good. I will never buy another Gillette product, ever. Yep. That's why all the personal care and cleaning products outfits give away samples in those free goodie bags they hand out to college freshman. John and Janie Freshman have probably never bought a lot of that stuff on their own before, leaving it up to Mom. If they get a free Cutthroat razor, and a free box of NoScum detergent, and those things work okay, there's a very good chance they'll keep buying those brands for the rest of their life. While I don't know this, I would not be surprised to learn that they actually PAY the colleges to put their products in the goodie bags. Unless, of course, the razor company actively insults them, or something totally idiotic like that. But of course, no sane company would do such a thing. I went to a work lecture on diversity, aka Woke Church. The guest presenter shared with us all the woke ads of the last five years and lovingly presented the Gillette ad. I think she would have made out with it if she could.
The Woke Girl Squad up at the front of the room was all yaaaaas kween! and chatty with comments and their feels. But I noticed the quiet, slightly bristly, younger white men in the back. Saying nothing but obviously feeling that nothing they might say about this mattered. So they kept their mouths shut and let the Woke girls fill up the space with chatter. THAT is who Gillette has permanently lost. The silent average person tired of being attacked for existing, and knows verbally fighting this is useless. They fight with their wallets instead, and Gillette is the loser in that fight. I think the guest presenter's heart was the right place; she was obviously scarred by life events as a kid and wants to prevent that for others. But the problem is she obviously equates the fact that life = hard + unfair, which is the universal situation of ALL HUMANS, to "life = hard + unfair because white people hate my color, gender, and size." Wrong message, and the media feeds that narrative. She knows no other. I wanted to hug her and tell her it's ok, but I would probably have been accused of assault by micro-aggression or something. "Stakeholder" is a political term, not a business term.
It may have originated in politics, but businesses have been using that term for at least a decade and a half now. Whenever I write a software test plan or a specification I include a section called stakeholders that identifies all of the people who are authorized to dictate changes in how things might be implemented or project requirements. This has been a common term across several established companies. Posted by: bonhomme at August 23, 2019 04:32 PM (9t0Zz) 102
Gillette had to change the firefighter ad.
Initially, it was a soothing, "tone down the toxic masculinity by using a sensitive caring fireman" ad. The commercial has since been recut with a rock n roll track behind it and the fireman being a little more toxic. Though, he still has a bit of soy in him.

PS, you're dead to me and no number of ads about firefighters or soldiers will resurrect you.
Even more damaging to them is that once you pick a razor most people tend to keep with it. That has been the whole basis behind the shaving industry - they are famous for it. You give away the handles and gouge consumers on the blades. It took this woke ad campaign to make me change, but I'm not going back from something that is working well and is much less expensive no matter what ads they run. It is done, not something I'm thinking about again. I suspect they are going to be cooked for a long time. Posted by: moon_over_vermont at August 23, 2019 04:32 PM (kUmUV) 105

#38 Addendum. I commented before reading all the post and see that the guy is an Aussie. That might explain why I've been seeing that ad on TV for the whole summer or more.
Because advertisers here know that Hosers are already exposed to American ads when they watch shows that are just on US stations (and not simulcast with a Canadian station where the Canadian ads are played instead of the American ones by the Canadian cable company), they've occasionally run Aussie ads just to give the product a bit of different exposure. One was the Miss Clairol series where the young guy tries to pick up a MILFy type saying, "Don't I know you from somewhere?" and she says something like, "I used to be your schoolteacher." I just bought 100 Feather blades for like $22. Probably last me 2 years.
Up until the Gillette ad, I bought both Feather and Gillette. Now it's only Feather. It's too bad, because Gillette may not start as sharp, but it was smoother and more consistent. I think Feather doesn't quite have the same level of quality control. It's not a big deal though, if I get a harsh save from a brand new Feather blade, it usually smooths out by the second or third. Posted by: Pig to man dreaming of lions ________________ I just think it's WAY overstated to the point of being a rounding error. If China does nothing, Americans are looking at like $30-$60 billion in tariffs/taxes. That's like what the US government spends in 48 hours. The tax cuts dwarf that, American companies basically got their taxes cut in half. What actually will happen is countries will move their supply chain around and less exports from China. I'm actually kind of glad they did this.
I've found brands I like better, in some cases a lot and the icing on the cake is they're less expensive! The Arm & Hammer laundry detergent is shitloads better than tide, and sometimes 30% less. Same with their deodorant, I used to use old spice. Barbisol shave cream better and almost free. Palmolive is great. Finish dishwasher detergent. Costco for paper products. I'm down to 2 razors - it takes me a while to go through them - once they're gone my house is 100% P&G free. 23 the kind of obesity that that woman in the photo has is nothing to celebrate. Gillette is ignorant and irresponsible. We need to encourage responsible behavior, not celebrate irresponsible behavior.
______________ Yeah, I really don't get what they were trying to accomplish here. We shouldn't shame and humiliate fat people? Fine, most people would likely agree with that. But we should put morbidly obese people in bikinis and photograph them as product spokes-models? Uh . . . wtf? That makes no sense. Nobody aspires to look like that woman. All that excess fat is not only very unhealthy, it's also very unattractive. And it's unlikely that she does much shaving anyway, as she probably can't bend over far enough to reach her calves on a regular basis. So what's the point of using her in the ad, other than for the SJW's at Gillette to signal their phony virtue? There's none, and that's why it's wrong (in addition to being wrong for promoting unhealthy body images). Posted by: TrivialPursuer at August 23, 2019 04:43 PM (k4dH2) 208
As bonhomme mentioned, the term "stakeholders" does have meaning within some companies, maybe specifically large ones. It represents those people who have input on and are tied into the the successful development and launch of a product or project.
The SJW bullshit comes into play when it is used externally to represent anything other than the company's product, the consumer's use or purchase of that product and the shareholder's return on investment. Posted by: Chunk Hunger at August 23, 2019 04:43 PM (sN9mD) 209

Gillette found the edge of where going woke will hurt you. It is the same edge (though at much grander scale because Gillette took a flying leap off of it, instead of a dainty little step) that Dick's found.
There are two ways to go woke. I'll call them the "Nike Method" and the "Gillette Method." The Nike Method is to use a positive image (nevermind the reality - just the image) to build up a part of your customer base. Yes, you will alienate other parts, but if you play your cards right you break even or improve a little bit. The Gillette Method is to use a negative image to tear down your primary customer base. This will kill you, and it doesn't matter how virtuous you're telling everyone you are. Dicks pissed off a major part of their customer base, but not all of it and the wine moms who need to buy junior his baseball cleats will keep them in business. Dicks got hurt, but nothing like Gillette. Gillette went full retard. Posted by: Joe Mannix (Not a cop!) at August 23, 2019 04:46 PM (I2dne) 235

It seems to come and go in waves, for a while everything was green until BP got oil all over their faces when a drill blew a gasket in the gulf. But its always annoying. Good luck to your sister, nerdygirl, I hope she finds her path to wellness. I've been--ok I am--that obese girl. It's tough when I couldn't lose weight because carbs + sugar = crack to my body. My weight was a symptom something was wrong in how my body processed nutrition, and when I would ask doctors how to fix it all I would get is 'stick the Standard American Diet and exercise and lose weight.' Which was a losing cycle for me, and unhelpful. My body not handling the recommended nutrition guidelines well, plus depression, equaled bad times. I've lost so much weight doing keto, it's been so incredible and liberating to take back my health. I am so angry at the government for convincing all my doctors and society that eating fat was the problem. It was amazing to discover my body loves burning fat for fuel, fat makes it happy. Which goes against everything we are taught, especially now that animal meat and fat = gaia weeping. People have to take responsibility for their health, yes, but they also need to have the hope that they can change it for the better somehow. When I lost that hope I packed on the weight, because it seemed like nothing I did mattered. There is a healthy middle ground between loving yourself no matter your shape or size, because you are worth it, and celebrating unhealthy behaviors even when your current weight will swiftly kill you. We as a society need to rediscover that middle. Posted by: LizLem at August 23, 2019 04:55 PM (hvf9s) 318

I stopped going because they're literally the stop-and-rob around here. Every night one of them gets robbed somewhere in the news coverage area.
A little while ago, I made a snarky comment about how it was impossible that one of them had been robbed due to their anti-gun stance. The person I was speaking with got very upset with me, because they were somehow tied to the company. "That is a lie. We do not have those signs, and haven't had them in a long time!" Even though I'm well known as The Authentic Voice Of Calm And Reason, I don't care enough about grooming to dance around the Gillette marketing dumpster fire.
I am completely indifferent to the _marketing_ decisions that companies like Nike, Gillette, Dick's, etc make. I am VERY concerned when employers FORCE their EMPLOYEES to submit to this woke horsesh!t in order to keep their jobs, and that menace grows every day. First they started forcing employees into diversity workshop training, to correct their "wrongthink." Then they started harvesting evidence of "wrongthink" from employees' and candidates' online footprint. Now we have the introduction of the MANDATORY use of "preferred pronouns" in the workplace, so that wrongthinkers are "corrected" every minute of every workday, beaten into submission to this evil false doctrine of utopian egalitarianism, in order TO BE ABLE TO MAKE A LIVING! THAT'S the thing we should be angry about, not the fact that marketers are, and have always been, sh!theads. Posted by: gp: The Future Mr. Gristelfink at August 23, 2019 04:59 PM (mk9aG) 366

USA elites were convinced that all we needed to do was to allow China to join the world in trade and diplomacy, to help it have a small bit of capitalism, and it would see the light and become a major capitalistic country, eventually turning into a free market, free country. I noticed that once a blog site, say NRO or Hot Air, become woke and go leftward leaning, the lefty trolls slowly invade the comment boards and begin chasing off the remaining conservative posters. At first, the conservative posters hang on, fighting off the wacky views of both the bloggers and the trolls. But eventually, they get overwhelmed, usually by a dozen rabid lefty posters who post hundreds of idiotic posts an hour. Right now, as Hot Air has become the latest HuffPo/Buzzfeed wannabe, the lefty trolls have invaded to the point of making the once enjoyable if spam filled comment boards unreadable. I saw this at NRO when they started tilting left, and I am beginning to see this pattern emerge - like a left wing virus - devouring a compliant host.

Yeah, this is one of those rare times where Ace gets a detail wrong.
When large corporations want to get political, but not say so, "stakeholders" is NOT a term that is used. Leftism is usually evangelized through HR, normally in the context of preaching the all-important "Diversity", or in celebrating "Black History Month", which is always a "no whites allowed" affair (you'll notice that the most important man in American Black History, Abraham Lincoln, is never, ever, mentioned, and the history they present skips straight from 1859 to about 1870 - you would think that God showed up, waved His hand, and slavery was thereby ended, even though he doesn't have any problem with it in the Bible). There's all kinds of weird crap they do - some of it downright cultish. But using the word "stakeholder" isn't part of that. "Stakeholders" just means "everyone effected by this" - everyone who has an interest (literally, a "stake"). Customers, stockholders, employees (some or all, depending), and maybe even suppliers or members or representatives of the community. It's really kind of an enlightened concept - it suggests actually thinking about how it's going to effect everybody, rather than just do whatever looks good from your own limited perspective. How much does anybody actually DO that? As they say, "Your mileage may very", and so it may ring very hollow in many cases. But political? I guess if they threw some political interest group onto the pile of "stakeholders", sure, but I haven't really seen it used that way. Posted by: Optimizer at August 23, 2019 06:42 PM (hOOi9) 550

"They want to know what they believe in. They want to know their values."
And therein lies the conceit of the left- they presume this to be true, that people don't have a grasp on their own beliefs and values, and that they (the left) are the only ones who can bring that enlightenment to the masses. Posted by: Uncle Jefe at August 23, 2019 07:31 PM (xKWHx) 553
Using "stakeholders" was a lame attempt by the corporation who employed me to include us workers in the success formulation.
You have corporate officers and management who run the corporation and you have shareholders who buy stock in the corporation and thus "own" the company. In the middle are the employees who perform the tasks assigned them by Management to achieve Corporate goals. Employees do this because they are paid to do work. If they work better, they get paid more. They can also be let go for a variety of reasons. The thought was to get the employees to buy into the company goals by convincing the employees that they have a stake in the corporation's success, so they became "stakeholders." In the age of feelz, a good paycheck just isn't enough -- until you're laid off and lose the paycheck. Then heck with the stakeholder stuff -- I just want the job and paycheck. But these ads caused me to contact P&G to demand to know what actions they would take against their marketing, advertising, and management of Gillette. No answers.
