The Economist: The World's Poor Are Eating More Meat Which Means They'll Live Longer and Healthier Lives But It's Very Sad Because of Global Warming
Plus: Slavery-Shaming from the New York Times and Nation of Islam

No, really. They're against the world's poor having healthy food.

It's not just the Economist, obviously. Business Insider also attacked those getting healthy on a keto diet because that also makes the Earth Goddess Maia cry.

And there's even more food-shaming.

The New York Times filed another entry in its campaign to make Race Reparations a viable position for Democrats to take by declaring that Sugar = Slavery.

Now that is, you know, based in fact. Sugar was one of the nastiest crops to harvest (I'm not sure why; it might just be due to the hot, wet conditions necessary for cane sugar cultivation), and as most free people did not want to do it, slaves were forced to work the sugar fields.

I'm not sure what we're supposed to take from this, though. We've all heard of the "Triangle Trade" -- sugar, slaves, rum. What is "news" in this?

There is no "news." This is just, as Doc Zero said, "battlespace preparation" for the 2020 Orangemanbad elections.

The article isn't terrible, except for its obvious intention as a piece of agitprop which pretends to illuminate slavery, while actually obscuring it.

Slavery is evil, of course.

This piece presents it as a uniquely white evil, as part of the battlespace preparation for next year's elections.

Is it, though?

Of course not. Watch this very neat (quite long but worth it) Lindybiege article about "The White Headhunter."

It's a great and interesting story in its own right, but illustrates a few points being left out of the New York Times' polticization of slavery.

The White Headhunter of the book's name is called Reston. He is enslaved himself -- several times.

First his landlord drugs him and sells him to a ship captain.

The ship captain intends to bring workers -- I mean, slaves -- to a remote and uninhabitable island in the middle of nowhere in the Pacific. He needs slaves, because the work he has planned for his "workers" -- mining guano, birdshit, by the ton -- is an unpleasant and unhealthy job that free men don't want to do.

So he is forced upon a ship to become a slave.

However, he escapes in one of the ship's boats.

After a harrowing time of starvation at sea, he lands upon a Pacific island inhabited, as Pacific islands tend to be, by Pacific islanders.

They are nonwhite.

They immediately enslave him, for no other reason than that he is alone and weak and they are many and powerful. They enslave him because they can.

He serves as a slave to the chief for a time, trying to prove his usefulness so that they do not eat him.

One job he does for them is translate discussions between the chief and European ship captains who come to call on the island.

The captains tell the islands' chiefs that if they give them men to work the dangerous, dirty mines of Australia, they will not only pay the men good wages, but will also pay the chiefs. First, with an upfront payment of rifles and steel axes and other Western goods of great value, and then even more when the men's term of service is up.

But this is a lie. The captains are blackbirders -- that means they are slavers, but they don't use force, at least not at first, to captures slaves.

Rather they enslave people through trickery and false promises. Later, if the enslaved people try to escape or revolt, then they'll use force.

They're told they will work in the mines for five years (or whatever) for wages; in fact they'll be slaves for as long as they have the physical ability to dig.

Now notice here that the island chiefs -- not white people -- are assisting in delivering over slaves to the blackbirders.

Do they know the men they're sending away will not be well-paid workers but rather slaves? Well, they probably have some idea. After all -- the moment a person of a different race lands on their shores, they enslave them.

When they fight other islanders and capture enemies, they enslave them.

So the idea that maybe these men that I'm selling to these captains are going to be enslaved is something that would probably occur to them.

So we have in this story:

A white landlord drugging a white man to "shanghai" him into slavery;

nonwhite Pacific Islanders enslaving that white man after he escapes his white slavers;

those nonwhite Pacific Islanders enslaving other Pacific Islanders and selling their own people -- their low-status men who are not part of the chief's family and not especially powerful in the tribe -- into slavery by whites.

Slavery is not a white scourge; it's a human scourge. Throughout history, until very recent times, people took slaves whenever they had the power to do so.

Blaming whites alone for this is ahistorical and nothing more than racial political agitation. It's not that whites were particularly intent on enslaving people; it's that whites developed ships and steel weapons more at a faster pace than many others, and thus had the power to do what powerful humans had done throughout history -- enslave weaker peoples.

It's also a bit strange that this author, a grandson of Elijah Mohammad of the Nation of Islam, would deign to lecture anyone about the evils of slavery without first addressing the salient historical fact that Muslims and the Arabic Middle East have had quite a long history of enslaving people themselves, and that history extends well into the 20th Century.

Why date the start of slavery in 1619? It most assuredly did not start there.

And it didn't start in America, or even in Europe. It started long before Europe was well-settled by human beings.

But the New York Times is going to pretend history started there, just as it pretends the number of deaths due to terrorist attacks starts conveniently the day after 9/11.

Like most historical topics, slavery is a story with many villains and only some heroes, and it does not fit neatly into anyone's political fairy tale.

It tells us more about humanity than about the political villain of the day -- nasty Republicans who never owned slaves and 99% of whom aren't even descended from anyone who did.

The topic cannot be used for gross political purposes.

Except if you really need it to, and you have a deep-pocketed Ruling Class corporation to fund the project to do so.

And do watch that video when you get the chance. It's terrific. I downloaded the book but haven't read it yet.

Let's put it this way: the time period in which the world had no slaves is a tiny, tiny percentage of human history compared to the time period when people had slaves.

And the percentage of people who never owned slaves is a tiny tiny number compared to the percentage who did. Everywhere. Slavery was, for the bulk of human existence, the method of getting jobs you didn't want to do, done. Then, we had capitalism which hired people and paid them to do that. And finally now we have machines to do that crap.

52 Oh, shit, this turned out to be a slavery thread. I was going to rant about sugar.

Well, I will anyway because it's about the evils of Big Corn and protectionism.

We protect sugar in this country. That is there are import tariffs that price it out of competition from HFCS. This benefits a small number of interlocked families in Florida who grow sugar with near slave labor of imported Jamaicans.

It moved candy manufacturer Mars to Canada because while there are import duties on sugar there are not on candy made of sugar.

It means, of course, that we get that nasty slop in our Coca Cola when even Mexicans -- Mexicans!! -- get sugar in their Coke.

Big Corn gets protection because of the Iowa caucuses and we get get ethanol that destroys small motors, crappy Coke, and Florida slavery.

Free trade good. Tariffs bad.

80 Same thing happened in Africa. The Portuguese and Spanish didn't start Black slavery in Africa. They came upon the trade that was already in action run by the Kings of the various tribes in the locale and the Arab/Muslim slave traders.

It was an up and running concern. Not at the level that could be reached when they started to colonize the various Islands of the Caribbean.

And of particular note is that slaves are mentioned quite often in the Bible. In fact they are mentioned in the first book. Egyptians were noted for enslaving folks. They enslaved the Nubians who lived up stream on the Nile. There's also records of slavery in Persia dating long long time ago.

That the media can get away with this is the fact that the Democrats/left have purposely dumbed down our educational "system" to produce citizens who can barely write and know little of this country's history let alone Ancient History.

It's almost as if they have a plan.

84 1619 is a dumb choice, one only an academic could love. Even if you restrict the field to the New World, Spain kicked off slavery in it's holdings early in the 1500's. In fact they were the ones who first started transporting black Africans over to work their plantations. The Spanish tried enslaving the indigenous Indians they found first (it of course would have made more sense to use the people who were already there) but due to disease and lack of physical endurance, the Spaniards managed to kill off almost all of their native populations with their attempts. (in places like Puerto Rico, their may no descendants of the original inhabitants left)

The Spaniards found that Central Africans were the only people with the physical prowess and the heat tolerance to be able to survive the harsh working conditions, and that's how they started being transported to the new world. Eventually growers in the southern English colonies picked up on what the Spanish had already been doing for a century or so.

114 I'm sure that it won't take the New York Times long to trot out the theory, recently popularized by Ta-Nehisi Coates, that all wealth in the United States exists because black people were and are brutally oppressed. (This has been a belief among black nationalists for decades.)

You have a nice house and a nice car? You only have these things because the faces of black people have been ground into the dirt for centuries. This is why reparations are required.

There may be a few holes in the theory - it is unclear how oppressing 12% of the population made 88% of the population wealthy. It also doesn't explain Canada, which is about as affluent as the United States, despite a relative lack of black people to oppress, and doesn't explain that the Intermountain West is about as affluent as the rest of the country, again without a large number lack of black people to oppress.

No matter - I'm sure this won't stop the NYT.

The whole project isn't to address slavery per se but to delegitimize America per se. America has been stained by this sin from the beginning, you see, so everything that followed - individual liberty, constitution, free markets, self-governance, consent of the governed - is sinful and illegitimate.

It's an agitprop project. If you try to counter it with historical arguments about slavery's universality, it'll just slide off their backs.

This is not really true, or at least not the whole truth. In the 18th and 19th century it was understood ( rightly and wrongly for complex reasons) that Africans were better suited to working in very hot conditions than Europeans. The sun and skin color is a part of it, but resistance (built up and genetic) to malaria was a big part of it.

It's not that Europeans wouldn't do those jobs, but certainly free people would not travel to the jungle to do them since for most of them it would have been a sure death from disease.

168 That's not entirely false but the sugar has a definite metabolic effect that, say, lettuce does not. Sugar stores in your body, it is turned into fat.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at August 21, 2019 07:05 PM (KZzsI)

Excess calories are turned into fat, regardless of the source of those calories.

Recall that fat, a triacyl glyceride, is a lipid (i.e., a highly reduced compound, not far off of being a hydrocarbon), whereas sugar is a carbohydrate (i.e., of the empirical formula (CH2O)n), so producing fat from sugar requires a lot of biosynthetic activity to reduce a carbohydrate to a fat. (Think making gasoline from sugar, to a crude approximation.)

The difference between sugar and lettuce is that there are virtually no calories (or nutrients, for that matter) in lettuce. It's basically water. You'd have to eat a ton of it to get the requisite caloric intake for any physical activity.

If there was a type of food that, let's say, caused your body to overproduce insulin and thus begin fat storage before the nutrition even had a chance to be used for movement or other biological functions, well, that food would make a lot more "excess" calories than would, for example, four eggs.

Again, while true, misleading. Sugar is very quickly broken down into fat. Other materials are more difficult (that is, they take more energy, and hence result in less stored energy). This is the secret of carbohydrates that some don't seem to grok: the more complex, the less troublesome they are. Potatoes take longer than oranges, which take longer than honey, which takes longer than a spoonfull of cane sugar. Each process uses energy, burning calories in your body, and resulting in less overall increased storage.

That's why vegans tend to be emaciated, because they're burning so much energy to break down the food they eat that little reaches their system to be used and stored.

Diabetic coma (severe hypoglycemia) occurs when you don't have ENOUGH sugar (for instance, by taking too much insulin). It's sudden and serious. The treatment for it is... ingesting sugar (or getting it IV if the patient is unconscious).

Getting too much sugar (hyperglycemia) also causes severe health consequences, but usually develops over a period of days to weeks.

If you're around someone with diabetes, recommend that you learn to distinguish the symptoms of the two, so as not to make an existing problem worse.

Which was always the case. ALWAYS. Electors were meant to be totally independent agents. That was a safeguard.

States don't have one set of electors and then tell them how to vote. Each candidate has a slate of electors and the voters vote for the elector lists. If there is a bad elector in the list that is generally the candidate's fault.

In the lefty anti-Constitutional popular vote crap, they are trying to have states send the wrong electors! - i.e. the voting in the state has nothing to do with the actual elector lists. If a state thinks that it can send any electors and force them to vote any way it wants .... that is wrong and so very, very, very un-Constitutional.

There are really three kinds of vegans.

1) the idiot college girl who thinks she's vegan while she eats ice cream
2) the person who is 350 pounds and is trying to lose weight by becoming vegan, but cheats a lot with sweets
3) the true vegan who eats only non-animal products, and that means almost nothing that has fat in it, even butter or oils.

The first two tend to not be skinny. The third has bad breath, bad skin, and is rail-thin because they are starving their body of needed nutrients as an omnivore. Almost NONE of them do what they have to in order to get the proper proteins etc (such as eat a crapload of beans).

It really takes a professional nutritionist preparing your foods in order to make it on that kind of whackball diet which is how the super celebrity rich people can pull it off.

Its not a direct process. You burn ready energy in your body, then you start to burn muscle tissue, if you go too far. Then your body rebuilds that energy and tissue from the energy in fat. So its a few steps removed.

312 No, it isn't. It's thermodynamics.

You're both right, as I understand it. It is thermodynamics in that you break down food materials into calories and energy (among other things) but your body uses a lot of chemical processes for how it handles the energy and nutrients it gets. Some of those processes are directed by hormones to different tasks and metabolic needs.

Its not one or the other.

Human bodies aren't a bunsen burner, they do all kinds of other things with the food and energy besides burn and store.

I didn't say a thing about sugar. I said the difference between energy in and energy out is the surplus or deficit. Saying that "calories in, calories out" is pseudoscience is throwing the baby out with the bathwater. You can't store a surplus you don't have; you can't store fat if you're burning more than you're taking in.

That's all.

332 Its not a direct process. You burn ready energy in your body, then you start to burn muscle tissue, if you go too far. Then your body rebuilds that energy and tissue from the energy in fat. So its a few steps removed.

Exercise will reduce fat, but not directly, like its fuel in a tank.

Sorry, but with respect, that's nonsense. (Also, what do you mean by "ready energy?")

Carbohydrates are used physiologically during short bursts of effort; sustained aerobic effort burns fat, because carbohydrate stores are limited, and quickly depleted.

351 What really annoys about the #1619 thing is that the first legally recognized slave owner wasn't until 1655. Until then, the laborers brought from Africa were considered indentured servants as was the English tradition. Typically a contracted four to seven years of slavery as payment for your debt, then freedom.

Anthony Johnson was a Virginia plantation owner who held an African named John Casor for many years past the end date as Casor had no knowledge of indentured servitude and assumed he was a slave. A neighbor of Johnson's, Robert Parker tried unsuccessfully to persuade Johnson to free Casor, then persuaded Casor to flee and Parker hired him for his labor.

Johnson sued Parker for his slave back. He argued that as Johnson was not an Englishman, he should not be held to English laws, and where he is from they take men like Casor as slaves for life. The court agreed and ruled in Johnson's favor, about four years later the legislature would formally legalize slavery for the Africans brought over on the trade ships.

And did I mention Johnson was an Angolan? Captured and sold by Arab slavers decades earlier, landed on the shores of America as Antonin, negro, and he worked as an indentured servant on a plantation in Virginia, then when freed built his own successful plantation. America's first slave owner, many decades after 1619.

Well, that's definitely part of it. But you can get just as much exercise and still put on fat around your belly as a guy or your hips as a woman as you get older. Its a change in your metabolism, because you know: you're older. And that's not wrong unless it goes to extremes.

Consider, as you age you're not as able to get around and do things you once did, so you're going to be a less effective hunter and gatherer. This means that you need to store more food to make it through the leaner times between meals.

396 But look, we're Americans, baby, and we have to deal with the repercussions of American slavery. Are the Saudis enslaving Pakistani schoolgirls morally worse? Probably, but I don't think we're in a world history scorecard competition.

In America, to perpetuate American slavery, we created the myth that the Negro is genetically inferior and not fully human. That was the only way a moral people could countenance slavery.

Yeah but that was put to rest a long time ago, and its hardly unique to the USA to dehumanize people that don't look like us -- or even to white people in the USA.

Slavery was an issue, generations ago. Now its just a club to beat people over the head with to gain political power.

The world is full of cultures that consider outsiders "not fully human".

Many American Indian tribes have endonyms that translate as "human being", "real people", and so on.

We won't even get into the astronomic level of racism among Asian cultures (or even WITHIN Asian cultures... untouchables, burakumin, etc.).

440 It is thermodynamics in that you break down food materials into calories and energy (among other things) but your body uses a lot of chemical processes for how it handles the energy and nutrients it gets. Some of those processes are directed by hormones to different tasks and metabolic needs.

What, pray tell, is the difference between calories and energy? Calories are a measure of energy, just like joules, BTUs, electron volts, etc. Again, with respect, not knowing that, frankly, does not inspire confidence.

Physiology does not acquire energy; it generates it, from food. Some fraction of food goes into cell division, repair, etc. The rest is oxidized,* metabolized by intestinal flora, and/or excreted.

Hormones are the signals of the feedback system. That's all. They don't decide anything. If you run, you rapidly deplete the O2 partial pressure in the blood, which causes you to breathe hard because the CO2 partial pressure in the blood increases, decreasing blood pH, which triggers heavy breathing.

* even anaerobic metabolism in humans ultimately results in oxidation by oxygen, because under anaerobic metabolism pyruvic acid (CH3COCOOH) acts as the "terminal" electron acceptor from NAD(P)H to generate lactic acid (CH3CHOHCOOH), which is what causes the "burn" in intense exercise. After the exercise, the huffing and puffing one does allows oxygen to reoxidize lactic acid back to pyruvic acid, so in effect pyruvic acid merely stored reducing equivalents temporarily. Incidentally, this is why mild exercise is recommended after intense exercise: to facilitate the reoxidation of lactate, which will otherwise lead to muscle soreness.

If the cement worker eats only high glycemic crap he's going to eventually get fat AND/OR diabetic because he's going to destroy his insulin response. The sedentary desk sitter needs fewer calories, of course. Both should avoid processed crap, added sugar, a lot of grains, and a lot of starches. 488 Ah, NO.

The newer cars use the same amount of energy per gallon as before (allowing for changes in the formulation of gasoline as sold publicly)

What's changed is that MORE useful work has been extracted as
due to computers than the old gas engines which were real basic analog machines and not digital with digital inputs as today's are.

They also demand a more scientific maintenance to keep up that efficiency.
Posted by: jakee308 - Hylozoist at August 21, 2019 07:50 PM (cxIsI)

Yes. Sorry "Useful work" not work wasted as heat. Thanks for being pedantic. So they're not really more "fuel efficient," they're more efficient at doing useful work with the fuel. Because people talk like that.

Technically, and we want to be technical here apparently, newer cars also extract more energy from the fuel they burn than my Ford Galaxy did, so they do get more energy for every gallon of gas they use. Technically.

If someone is interested in talking about real issues, without any PC bullshit, then there are always conversations and debates that are going to be uncomfortable for some. That's the nature of reality, itself. But the key to a serious political scholar (if one were attempting to be one) is that political ideas live on their own and are not based on who else might share those ideas. You deal with the idea, not with the person espousing it. If you can't detach the two then you aren't really interested in any political theory or governmental architecture but more of a tribal apportionment of society.

This ain't rocket surgery.

There are realities of differences in race, even if much of it is cultural. That can't be addressed with BS like disparate impact or minority preference forever. (especially when not only blacks up from slavery, but each and every imagined "minority" is made into a victim of white supremacy.

I think that we might be one of, if not the most, racially diverse functional societies in history, even with a somewhat checkered past. The real problem for the globalists is that we Americans (for the most part) really tend to view each individual as an individual. Then the Democrats and race hustlers figured out there were votes to be had and money to made by exploiting race, and here we are!

Posted by: Commissar Hrothgar at August 21, 2019 08:19 PM (BiNEL)

519 I have a theory that the bulk of people who were taken as slaves and sold to the white people on the coast of Africa were undesirable types. The folks that tribes wanted to get rid of, the stupid, the criminal, the violent, the insane, the troublemakers. I mean, why get rid of the good ones? Sell that batch of scumbags to the crackers and we'll get rid of them!

I don't have any evidence supporting this, just a knowledge of human nature.

Now genetics are not destiny, but they do play a part. The same batch of slave generations gave us Booker T Washington and Denzel Washington, its not a direct certain line. But I mean... it probably does play a part.
Posted by: Christopher R Taylor at August 21, 2019 07:50 PM (KZzsI)

You should read Sowells Black Rednecks/White Liberals. He makes a good case that the traits we call endemic to Blacks as a race or culture where borrowed wholesale from the white Crackers they lived with as slaves, which they brought from England where there were no slaves at all.

Free blacks that lived in the North tended to lose these traits and were accepted by whites there until migration from the south reintroduced large numbers of unassimilated blacks into northern cities.

Also, of course, *white* southerners with those same characters were just about as unwanted and discriminated against as the blacks.

Ironically, as the white South has more or less lost the attitudes wholesale, the blacks in the inner cities has been shielded from assimilation by white liberals and black leaders.

522 The Economist used to be a good magazine, but over the past decade they have gone COMPLETELY off the rails. Their U.S. section has long been unreadable.

If you read their editorial page you realize quickly how they work so hard to be at cross purposes with each other and how much they work to contradict themselves. (Example: The Economist HATES private gun ownership. But at the exact same time, they despise American law enforcement as too violent.) And they fall head over heels for all the Leftist/Statist fads. (Being gay is the most important thing in the world to them, for instance.) The one thing I will grant them is that they are very naked about where they stand on different topics. And I do like their international coverage. Beyond that, no thanks.

523 "The real problem for the globalists is that we Americans (for the most part) really tend to view each individual as an individual."

First, a globalist is nothing more than a person with a valid passport, especially if it has visas.

Second, since when do Americans view each other as individuals? We cannot stop classifying each other into groups. Upper-class, middle-class, the poor, Millennials (my favorite), Gen X, Gen Y, Gen Z, The Greatest Generation (implicit in that label is "a Great America is in the past, we'll never get there again, and we shoudn't try"), not to mention all the other divisions based on race, color, creed. I would be SO HAPPY if this society regarded everyone as individuals. But we don't. The Left sees to that and the Right meekly plays along by using their language.
