Harry Windsor and His Wife Criticized for Talking Up the Dangers of Global Warming Before Burning Tons of Jet Fuel for Me-Time Holidays

Before getting into that, do check out the resort the Google Camp was held at -- costing $20 million for three days, it has been reported.

Think about all the jets and yachts needed to collect the Dull and the Dim for this Roman holiday. Think about all the trees that were cut down for the resort's multiple golf courses.

And it was at this Bacchanal that Harry Windsor (he's not my Prince, nor, frankly, anyone else's) gave a speech -- barefoot, for some reason -- about how we must all do our utmost to reduce carbon emissions.

Before jetting off to Spain and then to France.

This article from Forbes notes the backlash:

British Royal couple Prince Harry and Princess Meghan Markle triggered widespread outrage recently after lecturing the world about climate change while flying around the world in private jets.

"With nearly 7.7 billion people inhabiting this Earth, every choice, every footprint, every action makes a difference," the Duke of Sussex said on Instagram a few days before jetting off with the Duchess to Ibiza, Spain and then to Nice, France.

BBC calculates that those two flights alone produced six times more emissions than the average Briton does each year and over 100 times more than the average resident of the African nation of Lesotho.

Friends of Harry and Meghan rushed to the couple's defense. "I'm calling on the press to cease these relentless and untrue assassinations," said Elton John.

"Imagine being attacked" tweeted Ellen, the comedian, "when all you're trying to do is make the world a better place."

But their celebrity defenders only added fuel to the fire. "So stop lecturing us on how we live our lives and live by example," responded one Briton.

Obviously.

This writer makes a great point about the blatant hypocrisy on display here -- what this hypocrisy was neither unconsidered nor inadvertent, but a semi-conscious power move to boldly proclaim, "The Rules do not apply to me. I am The Ruler, not the Ruled"?

A simpler explanation for the hypocrisy of celebrities who moralize about climate change is that it is a way of flaunting their special status.

Hypocrisy is the ultimate power move. It is a way of demonstrating that one plays by a different set of rules from the ones adhered to by common people. Hypocrisy demonstrates how unaccountable one is to conventional morality.

Another Google Camp attendee, the 15 year old autistic girl who has now become the newest Childe Prophet of environmental religion, is taking a ship to America. She's taking a ship in order to avoid the obvious objection of trans-global travel -- that she's pumping out a hell of a lot of carbon dioxide for someone says she's literally in a "panic" about how much carbon dioxide other people are pumping out.

She claims that this latest Children's Crusade is "zero emissions" and "carbon neutral."

You will not be very surprised to learn that that is yet another despicable lie.

In addition to all the carbon dioxide that a (mostly) wind-propelled yacht produces -- those refrigerators don't run on solar power -- she's also not publicizing the fact that the two crews she has taken on to run the boat for her will be... traveling by airplane.

There's much about this stunt and its main protagonist to mock. But just for the purposes of this article, ignore for a moment both the grotesque cynicism of egregiously exploiting a clearly troubled and vulnerable child to advance an eco-totalitarian political agenda, and the incongruity that few of us can whistle up a $4million, 18-metre (60ft) yacht from Prince Albert of Monaco to cross the Atlantic to assuage our enviro-guilt, and consider just one question.

Precisely how green is the Blessed Greta's planet-saving maritime odyssey?

...

Some intriguing revelations about the crewing arrangements emerged soon after departure. It turns out that the three westbound crossing crew will be flying back from New York to Europe, while the replacement crew of five will be flying from Europe to New York for the return passage.

So that's three transatlantic flights for Greta's Ark westbound crew to return from New York, plus five more for its replacement eastbound crew to get to New York. I'm guessing those flights won't be in Economy, either. What's their 'carbon' -footprint? Why can't she just fly to New York with her father? Or even address the United Nations via Skype?

Read the whole thing. Everything about this gold-plated "zero emissions" trip is a lie.

Help! Someone told me that Google Camp directed powerful search-lamps at the windows of the resort overlooking their outdoor party to blind anyone who dared to scan their gaze over the precious Googlers.

Not blind them permanently, of course. But to direct enough light at them that they could not lay their prole eyes upon the Exalted Googlers.

BTW, non-Googlers paid a lot of money to stay at that ultra-luxe resort.

Though I heard this, I haven't been able to find a citation for that.

Have any of you read this? If so, where?

And until then, don't take my mention of this as anything other than pure rumor. I've tried and tried to track it down and am starting to doubt the story.

Overstock.com CEO Byrne's resignation comes after conspiratorial comments where he confessed his role in the 'deep state', claiming that he helped cause "damage done to our nation for three years and felt my duty as a citizen precluded me from staying silent any longer." Byrne released an initial statement last week where he discussed his involvement in the federal government's investigation into the 2016 election interference, though he wasn't super-specific, he said he assisted in 'investigations' related to the Clintons and Russia.

Recently, Byrne turned over documents to the DoJ regarding what he said was 'the greatest political scandal in US history.'

"I gave to the DOJ documents concerning both the origin of the Russian probe and the probe into Hillary Clinton, both of which I was involved in, and both of which turned out to be less about law enforcement than they were about political espionage," Byrne told SaraACarter.com Monday.

He also claimed in an interview with the NYT that he had been romantically involved with Maria Butina, the convicted Russian operative who had infiltrated the NRA.

Also, I guess she hit it big last year by staging a student walkout in protest of global warming. No doubt all the students participating did so out of idealism, and not at all from the chance of getting out of school.

101 My fear is that everyone has stopped listening to everyone else. Echo chambers are now the norm, and manners - even forced manners - are long gone.

I was at a meeting yesterday where a salesperson said "Pennsylvania is now basically Philadelphia at one end, Pittsburgh at the other, and 'Alabama' in the middle. Can you believe those neanderthals?"

For real. I'm not making that up. This is a SALESPERSON talking to a group of five or six people. What, did he believe that all six of them voted for Hillary?

No, of course not. Trick question. He didn't think at all. Like all liberals, and many right-thinking folk, he is so consumed with his hatred for the other side, he is lulled into confusing manners (my manners, not his) for intellectual alignment. Because I am polite, and don't bring politics into any work conversation, people assume I am simpatico - even in a group of potential buyers.

Prince Harry doesn't think anything. He's an imbecile. Rich? yes. Famous? yes. Intelligent? The Windsors have never been known for their brains, to begin with. Now? Par for the course.

The problem isn't that he's an idiot; it's that he truly believes that he is right, you are wrong, and this is "settled."

You certainly don't have to be Italian to be a Fredo.

106 Anyone else really creeped out by the Greta Thunberg thing? Very Dear Leaderish treatment by so many "elites." She addressed Davos and told them they should be scared, they should panic.

She is a terror at home, and so is her sister:

After years of depression, eating disorders, and anxiety attacks, she finally receives a medical diagnosis: Asperger's syndrome, high-functioning autism, and OCD. She also suffers from selective mutism -- which explains why she sometimes can't speak to anyone outside her closest family. When she wants to tell a climate researcher that she plans a school strike on behalf of the environment, she speaks through her father. . .

Greta is not alone in her mental suffering, according to the book. Her sister Beata, who was 12 when the book was written, lives with ADHD, Asperger's syndrome, and OCD. She is prone to sudden outbursts of anger, during which she screams obscenities at her mother. What would normally be a 10-minute walk to dance class takes almost an hour because Beata insists on walking with her left foot in front, refuses to step on certain parts of the sidewalk, and demands that her mother walk the same way. . .

True, but even on the liberals' own reckoning, the argument for electric vehicles doesn't make.

Instead of burning hydrocarbons in a vehicle, they burn burn them in a power plant, then transmit the electricity - with the attendant line losses, which IIRC amount to ca. 30% - to a remote location, where the liberal charges his vehicle.

Notice that liberals rarely address the question of where the electricity comes from. If pressed, they mumble something about solar or wind power. I guess if it's cloudy and still you stay wherever you are at the time.

201 Though it's probably not apropos, it's an area of interest to me so I thought I'd share.

Your typical cruising catamaran - say a Lagoon 45, or a Privilege 50 (yes, that's a popular catamaran brand name - made in France) will typically make the 3000 nm trip from The Panama Canal to French Polynesia while burning less than 200 gallons of diesel. Sailboats today carry hefty solar panel arrays, and are often attenuated with wind generators or 'water' generators, both of which are fairly efficient since wind, sun, and water are what the sailing life is usually about.

Using the trade winds, they travel mostly downwind.

But there are downsides.

A typical average travel speed is somewhere between 6 knots and 10 knots. Which means that the total trip usually takes something in the territory of 3 or 4 weeks. It's slow. There is also the question of having to attend the sails on a 24 hour basis so it's rarely done alone, and usually done with a crew of 4 minimum. All of whom suffer sleeplessness taking shift. A sailboat of that size will also bob around on the surf like a cork, frequently causing at least a few days of seasickness.

Then there is the non-zero probability of being caught in an errant storm and dying. Modern technology and weather forecasting greatly reduce this risk but it isn't zero. Just a few weeks ago a catamaran was struck in rough seas off the coast of australia by a floating cargo container which had been lost after being blown off the deck of a freighter, and lost. 2 people were killed. But their carbon footprint was low when they did, so I guess it's worth it right.

It makes me think how much easier all our lives would be if these hypocrites all decided to 'walk the walk' and travel this way. It wouldn't be inconvenient for them to do so.
There are thousands of sailboats available for sale this very minute, all at prices which are well within the reach of our ruling class. A quick look at 'yachtworld' will show you hundreds with prices varying from 200K to 2M.

And think of all the downtime we'd get from them while they were making passage.

It definitely knocked America back on her heels. And then they stepped in on the reeling America to provide their vision of "better". They get to decide. That's who.

Sailboats today carry hefty solar panel arrays, and are often attenuated with wind generators or 'water' generators, both of which are fairly efficient since wind, sun, and water are what the sailing life is usually about.

What would normally be a 10-minute walk to dance class takes almost an hour because Beata insists on walking with her left foot in front, refuses to step on certain parts of the sidewalk, and demands that her mother walk the same way. . .

Cuomo threw a pie in the mayor's face Wednesday -- saying that if hizzoner wants his favorite Brooklyn pizza joint, Di Fara, open again he can pony up the $167,000 in unpaid state taxes the place owes himself.

"He has no legal authority to forgive state taxes," Fredo Cuomo said. "Now, if he wants to pay the $200,000 on behalf of the pizza place, he can do that. That's fine. And if he wants to get $200,000 worth of pizza, that's his business. But he can't forgive state taxes."

327 After years of depression, eating disorders, and anxiety attacks, she finally receives a medical diagnosis: Asperger's syndrome, high-functioning autism, and OCD.

What would normally be a 10-minute walk to dance class takes almost an hour because Beata insists on walking with her left foot in front, refuses to step on certain parts of the sidewalk, and demands that her mother walk the same way. . .

I had to look that up - officially, the Royals are still called "The House of Windsor", but male descendants without royal titles use "Mountbatten-Windsor" when a surname is required, since 1960.

"Windsor" was an easy choice during WW1, since it was the name of the Castle where the Royals lived throughout WW1 and WW2, and dates back to William the Conqueror.

Yep. Even more to the point, the computer models have flunked the ultimate test of a model: the ability to predict empirical results. When the climastrologists consistently predict results - i.e., prospectively, not retrospectively rationalizing past results - THEN I'll reconsider.

And by predict, I mean over a reasonable period, say, five or ten years, i.e., a prediction that can be falsified. None of this "500 years from now it'll be 0.1 C warmer" crap.

I disagree with you on hypocrisy in general, but not on this point. I won't take the mush-brained fiction of AGW seriously even if they do.

But that they deign to dictate to me how I should live while boisterously making different decisions for themselves is hypocritical and shameful. They're hypocrites and they should be called out on it. It underscores another aspect of this. No, I won't take my neighbor's use of a tinfoil hat to protect him from the mind-control rays as evidence that the mind-control rays are real - but I will at least know that he's probably not just a cynical liar making a power play.

The professional climate hypocrites are cynical liars making power plays while being all holier-than-though when talking to the proles. Screw them. Hypocrisy does matter, it's just that it's presence or absence isn't necessarily a key factor as to whether or not I take something seriously.

Hollywood is so jammed packed full of racists that I've no reason to doubt Freeman at all if his feeling was that he wasn't considered because of his race rather than that he wasn't the best choice for the part.

Sounds awful, Broseidon.

I don't mean to trivialize Greta's and her Sister's issues. Just think it's strange that this person who is dealing with some really debilitating issues has been christened as the one true voice to lead us in our quest to address climate change.

There's a lot going on in that household. I have to wonder why her parents, who have chosen to give in to a lot of the demands, think she's our problem, too. I get why they may do certain things for the girls; have an autistic niece and there are certain ways things must be done. However, I would never seek to take my niece's areas of anxiety and make them the focus of world leaders, nor would I push here before the world and expect her to provide the list of things the rest of us must do/not do.

It is not the same resort where the Googler stayed. They stayed at a much newer resort, which is a ways down the road.

Hotel Villa Athena is a beautiful old property but at least in 2005 was kinda skeezy. It was famous for Sophia and Marcello having an affair there, but it seems they hadn't changed the mattresses since. Its greatest selling point is its views at night of the illuminated temples. I imagine what you are hearing is that the Googlers came over to the temples to hold their party and shined the lights towards the relatively normal folks at Hotel Villa Athena. That would piss me off. I would have paid for that view.

451 One big problem is that measured data only goes back

Before that, you have to use proxy data, which will have varying
degrees of dependability.

Broseidon, I have anxiety/panic disorder myself. I also chose never to medicate myself and worked my issues out with talk therapy and other CBTs. which I'm very glad of. I also think that me personally, had I been born later, I would be in far, far worse shape than I am. The "laissez-faire" attitudes of the 80s helped minimize my problem. Were I a child now, I would be collection of fantastical neuroses, far more than I was way back when.

I have raised my own children, one of whom exhibits quite a bit of anxiety, in the way I was treated by my best therapists. Keep them busy, distract, positive reinforcement. It has absolutely minimized any pathologies.

What we're doing now - lionizing neuroses - is making them worse. I'm sorry, but I deeply believe this. Yes some will still suffer more severely than others due to a more serious presentation. But ALL children today will most likely have more severe, and a wider array, of neurotic symptoms than they would have had a generation ago.

It is in fact analogous to what Tom Servo is describing with the pedestalization of odd children as semi-mythological beings, btw.

In defense of Asimov, he just latched onto an idea that was already widespread and wrote speculative stories about it. Robert McNamara and all of the "Whiz Kids" of the Kennedy Administration were so sure of themselves, so sure all they had to do was apply "Scientific Methods" and they could run anything better than anybody else ever has, even a war.

The reason at least some of us don't buy into that idea anymore is that everyone who's tried it has failed so badly. Anybody who actually could think past their ideology could see that. (Lookin' at YOU, Krugman!) But, the lure of "Control" is always there to seduce the proud and overconfident.

This.

In actual science - not climastrology, obviously - you are required to disclose all of your methodology, and to submit your raw data as supplementary material. People make mistakes even doing something as hard sciency as solving crystal structures (most often from mis-assigning the space group), but the availability of the raw data, the data reduction algorithms, the programs used for generating Fourier maps, etc. mean that others can go back and find and correct mistakes.

In reviewing a paper I'd reject out of hand any submission that did not include such materials and the references to the calculational methods (which are pretty standardized).

It also shows an ignorance of what Asimov actually wrote in his trilogy. After a few hundred years the entire apple cart is upset by the appearance of a Mule, a mutant who can psychically mind control, totally scraps the Seldon Plan. Like in actual history those who only think of history only being shaped by impersonal forces come apart when a major player like Juilus Caesar, Napoleon, or Ghenghis Kahn or even Hitler disrupts the board.

The final act shows that in effect, the Second Foundation is a over-race of Mules shaping the society and the plan as they go, so again the idea of projection into the future by mechanical means of math is again shown to be inapplicable to the world of the Foundation and future Second Empire.

I had joked a few weeks ago that I would love for the bad guy to
escape in a Ford Focus because Jane Bond didn't charge the battery last
night and the movie can continue for another hour.

don't know about a ford focus, but i did once see a japanese movie of some sort where Our Hero, driving a VW Type 3 fastback, was being chased by bad guys in some tiny little Nissan something-or-other. he sees them in his rearview mirror, thinks to himself "no problem", punches it, and gets away. i laughed so hard.
