Sea Boots
Andrew Wyeth

Commenter Bandersnatch has been around these parts ever since I inherited this slot from rdbrewer. He is moving on to more mature and intelligent pastures (middle school teacher), so we won't have him to kick us around quite as regularly for our low-brow tastes.

Bandersnatch graciously pointed me in Andrew Wyeth's direction, and for that I am grateful. He is one of the giants of 20th century American art, yet I knew very little of his work. The piece above is in recognition of the interesting and serious and lighthearted comments Bandersnatch has graced us with for all these years.

[What really impresses is his rational analysis of the art; I find that kind of cogitation vanishingly rare in Red Sox fans. Perhaps one of his parents was normal...]

Bonus Wyeth below the fold.

Blue is a happy color usually associated with the aristocracy.

The colors in the painting are muted and very saturated.

Wyeth wants you to concentrate on the composition, the boots, the house and try to sort out the meanings therein.

56 I think the boots painting is the first Wyeth I kinda like. The triangle of the house is a little odd. It doesn't seem to fit for me. I think it'd be a better work without it.

As for the second... I was clueless about what fishing nets had to do with the decent of the Holy Spirit, but then it hit me. Most of the Disciples were fishermen. The nets now stand empty and unused as the fishermen have been anointed for a higher purpose. A modern image for an ancient event. Nice.

67 When the left starts freaking out that the Brazilian rainforest is burning down at an unprecedented rate remember this. They say they are losing one soccer field of forest every second. If that rate continues for 100 days, it will burn 560 square miles. Brazil is 3.2 million square miles. For comparison, the US is 3.5 million. So yes. Time to freak out and hand the world economies over to a few powerful leftists.

He said no, I'm thinking of something else, and he came up with Sea Boots, which is utterly new to me. So I get a brand new Wyeth to roll around in.

This is thoroughly modern and thoroughly ancient at the same time, and as with most Wyeths there's death lurking about.

The shape of the barn over the close horizon is like looking at a pyramid as you approach from the desert. (Not a metaphor, I've done that on horse and camelback),

The foreground boots are the portrait of the life of the man who wears them. We don't know for sure, he probably does many things like clamming and lobstering. He definitely works on the water and it's hard work. The wear and tear on the boots is very specific, it's exactly what happens from that line of work.

And the perspective shifts perfectly. You can pretty much put yourself in the chair where the artist painted. You have a flat line of sight to the barn, you look angling down at the boots, and practically straight down at the mussel shell.

And the mussel shell is perfect. Everything is perfect, but there is nothing at all photographic about this. This is a story in a guy's mind and he's put it on -- well probably not canvas -- this looks like a tempera so it's on wood.

This is why I love Wyeth.

Even longer version is that Tom Cotton has now come out and said that he was the one who recommended the purchase to Trump and he had already spoken to the Danish (Danes not Dutch) ambassador about the idea.

Greenland is rich in rare earth minerals that we need as well as China. They are a core component in electronic devices like computers and cell phones and are becoming extremely valuable and coveted.

And that doesn't include the strategic location of Greenland where we already have an air base and the Chinese are making big moves to try and insert themselves.

124 Another big thing about Greenland? It'd be a new frontier to open up for colonization. It'd be an outlet for people struggling to make it, to go out and claim something of their own.

I've always said that humanity needs frontiers, they inspire us, educate us as we learn to tame them in ways that improve life elsewhere, and provide an outlet for underachievers and social outcasts who haven't succeeded in settled society to build something they can call their own.

I've always thought the next frontier would be the seafloor or space, but I love this idea.

Greenland is kind of an odd choice. I can see reasons for wanting it, or at least pretending to. I don't particularly care about it, and I doubt Trump does much, either.

What's interesting is the reaction.

If any other President had expressed a passing interest in the purchase, there would be gallons of ink spilled in the US and Europe about the relative merits and demerits of the proposal.

But when Trump does, a million voices cry out REEEE at once.

Vikings, then Greenland was left in a sort of salutary neglect after the Plague swept through Norway/Denmark (which used to be one kingdom). Norway/Denmark started resettling Greenland in the 18th Century, and when the two countries split in 1814, Denmark got Greenland in the divorce.

My (admittedly thin) understanding is that there was a culture there when the Vikings arrived that wasn't Inuit. The Vikings left and the Inuit arrived from points west (probably starting in Alaska) and promptly "replaced" the existing culture, which is a polite way of saying they killed the men and raped the women. Then they settled in.

The time to do it is now. There's about another month of full sun, then two months. Of a reasonable day/night cycle, followed by increasing darkness, and then full night until March or so (depending on how far north you are; this timing is based on my memory of Thule 40 years ago).

I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: "Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert . . . Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them, and the heart that fed:
And on the pedestal these words appear:
'My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!'
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away."

I leave that as an exercise for the student.

As for McCoy tearing Kirk's tunic during the last scene of "The Naked Time" so that he could inject the captain with the cure, the answer is that Roddenberry and Co. had not yet decided that the hypospray could go right through clothing. Of coursde McCoy could have grabbed Kirk's hand and injected him in the wrist, or just plugged him in the neck . . . but tearing the shirt made for a much more interesting visual shot.

He said China is now designating itself as a Near-Arctic nation, even though it does not extend beyond the Arctic Circle. I guess the designation as an Arctic nation gives some rights under existing treaties or agreements.

There are 8 countries with territorial rights on the Arctic. The US is one, so is Russia and bunch of iceback countries.

Denmark is also one but only by way of their ownership of Greenland.

An interesting bit of timing with the Gibson protest was the Oberlin board of trustees was about to dismiss a professor who was a darling of the black students for her anti-Semitic /911 Truther screeds and here comes Aladin trying to steal two bottles of wine from Gibson. Yes, thanks Ace!
Publius and I are big-time procrastinators, but we're looking at a spring wedding. Maybe May. And we'll be getting started on a house this fall. I hope
Publius and his mother are sitting on a goldmine of gossip down here, and they're very parsimonious. It's kind of cruel to the locals, who are reduced to rubbernecking as they drive past the property, trying to check me out as I weed the garden. They've even confronted his mom straight on. "You know I hate to pry, but is Publius married?" She hates it when people try to pump her for info, but it's a small community and they don't have a lot to do other than gossip, I guess!
One lady even asked her point-blank if she likes me. "What kind of question is that? If I didn't like you, would I tell her?"
As luck would have it, she told Publius that I'm the perfect daughter-in-law. I feel like we're family already, even if it's not official. The way you feel means more than legal status, anyway.

498 Andrew Wyeth's father was N.C. Wyeth the painter. Wyeth is the name of a prominent family of American artists. Anyone remember the killar illustrations in The Last of the Mochicans? The Last of the Mohicans, an American adventure tale by James Fenimore Cooper, became an instant best-seller when it was published in 1826. Its popularity continued and by 1919, when N.C. Wyeth illustrated a new, deluxe edition of the book, Cooper's story had become a fixture in American boyhood.

500 Yo, Huck!

Nice article.

I find a lot in common between Wyeth and Hemingway. Both major 20th century artists who got critical scorn -- Hemingway because he wrote simple declarative sentences and Wyeth because he painted realistically.

The 20th century was all about getting precious. What were these rubes up to.

But both of them have emotional depths under what looks like a smooth surface. There's always death or loss in a simple story, or a picture of boots.

here's a very interesting article on Wyeth, and the ambivalence with which the establishment art world treats him.

Thanks, that was good. Nice to see all the other stuff surrounding him.
For me understanding his hyper brush strokes and the process of tempera paint is truly stunning. I know almost the full body of his work and it still blows me away how he was able to show light in his paintings.

503 Boston mfa had a display of wyette's paintings and I finally found one that did not depress me and was interesting. From across the room it looked like a framed black hole. As you approached it details began to emerge. When you were right in front, up close, you could see the lobster traps and fish nets dripping with water while the silhouette of a man working appeared. I loved that painting....the rest of his works i dislike

Brilliant!!! Wyeth's rendition of dinoflagellate bioluminescence in the ocean as a poacher pulls a lobster trap at night.

505 Missed the thread, dammit. I hate when life gets in the way of art.

I love these two paintings: the stark (but not barren) landscapes, the small details (the bits of shell and the worn wood of the shack), the delicacy of some elements and the use of the colors. Wyeth paintings let me hear the breeze blowing on the netting and sense the ocean near to the abandoned boots.

Just lovely. Thanks CBD.

507 He is moving on to more mature and intelligent pastures (middle school teacher).
Saying that middle school is a bastion of "mature and intelligent pastures" is like saying that "The Democratic Party is made up of free-thinking and thoughtful voters."

510 I don't think that non-artists "get" the artist's process.

Wyeth most likely painted his subjects because he liked the way they looked. Or how the boots looked against the ground with the gable peeking out.

It's so funny how viewers interpret paintings that are really just the purest form of expression:

"I see something I want to put down on canvas."

That's it. I'd like to know what Andy Wyeth has to say about his own boring-ass paintings, probably something similar to what I just wrote.

You know who has all the analysis and deeper meanings of the stuff they put down on paper or canvas? No - talent hacks. Those are the ones with All the Meanings.

Um, no. If you can, check out his "autobiography". It's a collection of his painting with about a paragraph about each one in his voice.

Everything for him has a deeper meaning. Everything is a shadow of death and loss and hope. It's not a pair of boots and it's not some nets drying in the sun.

513 511. I will look for that book, which you have neglected to name...but I have the feeling you're even projecting your interpretations onto his prose even because you are such a fan boi. If it turns out I'm wrong I'll admit it.
