lol: Disney and Sony Unable to Reach Deal on Renewing Rights-Sharing Agreement Over Spider-Man; Disney/Marvel Will Go Back to Plan of SJW Characters No One Cares About

lol.

Now, this could very well just be saber-rattling. As a James Bond fan, I heard many times that Roger Moore was done with the role, before news broke that he'd just signed to do another one at for an assumedly-larger paycheck.

But at the moment, Sony thinks it doesn't need Marvel to make Spider-Man work.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige won't produce any further Spider-Man films because of an inability by Disney and Sony Pictures to reach new terms that would have given the former a co-financing stake going forward. A dispute that has taken place over the past few months at the top of Disney and Sony has essentially nixed Feige, and the future involvement of Marvel from the Spider-Man universe, sources said.

Sony is probably fighting for some kind of deal that cedes them the Spider-Man character in perpetuity or near-perpetuity. Marvel is meanwhile thinking that if they let Sony make Spider-Man movies, they'll just fail again, and eventually give the character up due to not making movies at the contractually-specified pace (something like a minimum of one Spider-Man movie every 4 or 5 years or something).

The article explained the disagreement. It's just about money:

There is a lot of webbing here, but it all comes down to money, and it’s easy to understand why both sides refused to give ground. Disney asked that future Spider-Man films be a 50/50 co-financing arrangement between the studios, and there were discussions that this might extend to other films in the Spider-Man universe. Sony turned that offer down flat, and I don’t believe they even came back to the table to figure out a compromise. Led by Tom Rothman and Tony Vinciquerra, Sony just simply didn’t want to share its biggest franchise. Sony proposed keeping the arrangement going under the current terms where Marvel receives in the range of 5% of first dollar gross, sources said. Disney refused.

This leaves Marvel Disney with:

Iron Man dead

Captain America retired and "super-aged"

Black Widow dead

Hawkeye retired and even when he wasn't retired, still just Hawkeye

Hulk still partly controlled by Universal

Spider-Man apparently departed for the sure-to-fail "Sony Spider-Man Cinematic Universe"

Thor supposedly still around, but probably soon to be replaced by his gender-swapped replacement, also called "Thor" because no one would see a movie called "The Savage Sword of Jane Foster."

Marvel still has:

Captain Marvel, a character no one cares about played by an actress no one likes

Ms. Marvel, a Muslim-American girl who can stretch and enlarge her body like Mr. Fantastic, who no one really likes

The Fantastic Four, a team that has failed three times at the box office before, led by Mr. Fantastic, who no one really likes

The badly damaged X-Men, a very diminished brand due to overexposure and bad movie outings

The Eternals, a group of cosmic beings who never did much in sales or impact, who are complete ripoffs of DC's New Gods, another group of cosmic beings who never did much in sales or impact. Both groups were created by Jack Kirby in his declining years.

Nova, a character you never heard of and for good reason too

Quasar, a character who can be described as "the poor man's Nova"

Pulsar, a character who could be described as "a gender- and race-swapped Quasar"

Black Panther, a very overpowered and overrated character that White Liberals and Fake Geeks pretended to be totally in love with for two months

Ant-Man, a character that even Marvel itself treats like an embarrassing joke

and the Guardians of the Galaxy. I always thought this franchise was dumb, "science fiction" for people who don't like science fiction, "action" for Fake Geek Girls who don't like actual action, and I gotta think the public appetite for this crew is fading.

Oh, and I forgot: They're reviving Blade, which people are pretending to be excited about. And rumor has it that Blade will be religion-swapped to be... duh duh duh... a Muslim.

Despite the fact that characters in Marvel movies who might be expected to be Christian are never noted as such. "Christian" means, in Marvel, not really religious at all, but Blade, rumor has it, will be characterized with religious belief.

There will be no religion in all of Marvel except for Islam and... well, Norse, I guess.

So that's what Marvel has to work with going forward. Some old characters no one really cares about and some new characters no one's ever really liked.

In unrelated yet related news, Disney's stocks slid a bit due to a whistleblower claiming that Disney had overstated its income by billions in years past.

A former Walt Disney Co. accountant says she has filed a series of whistleblower tips with the Securities and Exchange Commission alleging the company has materially overstated revenue for years.

Sandra Kuba, formerly a senior financial analyst in Disney's DIS, -0.12% revenue-operations department who worked for the company for 18 years, alleges that employees working in the parks-and-resorts business segment systematically overstated revenue by billions of dollars by exploiting weaknesses in the company's accounting software.

Kuba said she has met with officials from the SEC on several occasions to discuss the allegations.

A spokeswoman for the SEC declined to comment.
...

Kuba's whistleblower filings, which have been reviewed by MarketWatch, outline several ways employees allegedly boosted revenue, including recording fictitious revenue for complimentary golf rounds or for free guest promotions. Another alleged action Kuba described in her SEC filing involved recording revenue for $500 gift cards at their face value even when guests paid a discounted rate of $395.

Kuba has also alleged that employees sometimes recorded revenue twice for gift cards, both when guests bought the gift card and when it was used at a resort. Sometimes, revenue was recorded even though a gift card was given to a guest for free following a customer complaint, for instance, according to the whistleblower's allegations.

Disney calls these charges "without merit."

Which is what I call its dying Star Wars brand, but that's a separate issue.

Are both of those things real? I don't pretend to be "down" or "hip" or whatever people are saying these days, but both of those seem like terrible and unworkable ideas. Blade *was* cool - but a lot of that was Wesley Snipes. I don't know if I'd like a non-Snipes Blade - especially if it's a woke-ass "he's a Muslim now just because it's transgressive and we pathologically hate the normals and need to fix them" variant.

Nonsense. The SEC has maybe 300 full-time lawyers on staff to oversee something like 20,000 publicly-traded tickers, each filing between 250-1000 pages of financial data per year. They are overwhelmed. How many people went to jail over the blatant frauds that lead to the 2008 crash? One person? The OTC market thrives every day on outright fraudulent pump-and-dump scams. Elon Musk has single-handedly shown how useless the SEC is. He should've been barred and\or prosecuted by the DOJ half a dozen times in the past 5 years.

Character fatigue is real. They've been pumping these out at a rapid clip for a long time now. Superhero movies got a new lease life on with the early-2000s X-Men. It was a breath of fresh air. It showed that superhero movies didn't have to be like they were in the (campy) 90s or go over the top weird like Ang Lee's Hulk. X-Men and X-2 stand alone as good movies in their own right.

Then spend a decade dialing it in and ramping up enthusiasm.

Then exploit that enthusiasm for a decade. No one should think that goes on forever. The characters and stories are tapped out now.

The real winners were Marvel executives - they sold to Disney dear the peak.

86 Willowed.
Re: Taylor Swift.

Taylor is what you get when you indulge your 14 year old daughter who dreams of being a rock star and songwriter by moving your family, sans Dad who still has to work to provide for the family, to Nashville. You then allow her to sit with adult males into the wee hours writing songs, talking about life, and dragging on joints, etc. By the time she's sixteen, your a stage mom, dragging along while she opens concerts for people such as Toby Keith. And then she becomes this big , ungodly wealthy recording artist, whose entire teenage years were obliterated so she appears to this day to be trapped in perpetual 17 year old boys are awful type of emotional stagnation.
She can't stay involved with anyone for more than a few months, it always ends in hysterics and a song describing what an asshole she dated. So now she's gone into politicking, and believing she knows about a world in which she herself, since age 14 has only known within the ability to buy whatever she wants, wear high fashion, buy mansions, defy record labels, music distributors, etc. drive fancy cars and have a cadre of help catering to her every whim.

She is no different than other "child stars" who are screwed up, other than she hasn't jumped on a wrecking ball naked, bragged about her abortions, cut her hair off with a set of clippers before she ran into the street, etc.

But it's coming.

95 Oh, they are looking at doing a movie Hawkeye when he inexplicably became a super ninja with a sword after his family was dusted. Who cares?

I know what the Marvel execs are about, they never really liked those old characters. Not the current crop of millennial douchebags in charge today. They are glad those old characters are gone and out of the way.

The problem is, people really only liked the Avengers, and mostly because of Iron Man, Captain America, and the Hulk.

Ant Man movies are fun (at least the first one was) but they aren't big earners. Who's left after that? The rapidly approaching her shelf life Black Widow who only ever had one good scene and struggles to beat up normies? Falcon, who is Captain America's crappy sidekick with wings that crap out regularly? They have really screwed the pooch with this move and I think they'll start to feel it soon.

141 It's not always possible to predict whether a movie will be good. I think that the average person didn't care at all about either Iron Man or Captain America, but their movies were quite good and people began to care. In particular, Robert Downey Jr. surprised everyone and the success of Iron Man owed a great deal to him.

Absolutely nobody cared about The Guardians of the Galaxy until the first movie came out. Then they became a big deal.

So it's possible that with the right actors and the right movies that Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, Nova, and the others could all become characters we like or even love. But at this point it looks very unlikely.

We've already had a Captain Marvel movie and it wasn't as horrible as the anti-fanboys were claiming, but it wasn't really that great. I'd predict that will be the pattern going forward... technically competent movies with good special effects, but not that great performances and not that great scripts. The MFM will try to whip up enthusiasm but it will burn out quickly as there won't be much actual love for the new characters and movies.

They've still got Doctor Strange and they haven't screwed him up yet. (I'd like to see them introduce Clea, Dr. Strange's love interest. But Ya Boi Zack has observed that modern Marvel can't seem to ever do anything with heterosexual romance.)

I never would have thought of Thor as being suited for comedy films, but they went down that road and... it worked. So they will do more of that. I'm on board.

They will be introducing Lady Thor. (Cue the SJWs shouting "She's not Lady Thor, she's just Thor!!!!") Whether I hate this or not will depend entirely on the script. At the moment, I'm not expecting it to be great.

Returning to this Sony news, I'm wondering if Marvel will now try to do something with Miles Morales, the half-black and half-Hispanic iteration of Spider-Man. Enter the Spiderverse did well and the character is generally well-received, so they might go for it and it might not suck.

I don't think it's guaranteed that Marvel movies are all going to suck going forward, but I wouldn't bet they are all going to be great or even good.

I love Blade. It would be hard to make a cool new Blade with a cool new twist, because there aren't any cool new young black actors like Denzel or Wesley or Idris to stuff into the costume.

But if the twist is "Blade goes to prison and converts to Islam, so he now has to smash the white Vampire patriarchy in the name of Feminist Allah," I swear I'll puke all over myself.

192 #129 "Ice Man is now openly gay"

According to Ya Boi Zack (and the comic pages he showed) Iceman became, overnight, for no obvious reason, 100% flaming mincing obnoxious stereotype gay. His parents reacted like it was still the 1950's. And he acted like a horrible jerk. It's all just horrible writing.

Zack pointed out that we have decades of thought bubbles showing what Iceman was thinking, and those thought bubbles established him pretty firmly as heterosexual. Zack suggested that making Iceman bisexual would have been more plausible, but this is SJW Marvel so forget plausible; go full virtue-signaling SJW.

By the way, it has already been leaked that Valkyrie (from Thor: Ragnarok and briefly in Avengers: Endgame) is a lesbian and will have some kind of female love interest. Sure, why not. But will there be any heterosexual love interest characters going forward? Will Captain Marvel turn out to be gay for Monica Rambeau? If they bring Ms. Marvel to the big screen will they also bring along her crew of sidekicks, of whom roughly 40% are lesbians?

193 Technically, at one point, Thor kind of *was* just a job - Donald Blake was Thor and only became Thor with the hammer. And he was, IIRC, just a doctor from Earth, not the actual Norse deity.

During one of the roughly 8,005 rebrandings/reboots/reshuffles/universe shifts Marvel has done since the 1960's, that changed and Thor became the actual Thor and Donald Blake was just his human disguise, and then I believe that alter ego basically got thrown into the ashbin at some point.

I would say GOTG and Thor 3 are a little irreverant, as is Ant Man, to the "Muh Mythos!" side of the Marvel canon. They got to be a little quirky and off kilter compared to the other films in the series. I still think the Jackson Pollock joke is hilarious and disgusting.

But because GOTG franchise has made a ton of money, and because of James Gunn's very strange personal behavior almost imploding the franchise, I suspect the director will not have as long a leash as he did on previous films. So we will see if GOTG 3 gets to be its quirky weirdo self, off in its own universe, or gets sucked into the Marvel Borg.

I think that 10-year run caused it. They made umpteen billions over that decade and enthusiasm has started to flag. Audiences are burned out on it. I liked Iron Man but I got my fill and didn't watch the rest of them - and I imagine that I am not the only one.

I suspect that Disney is looking at the eye-watering sum they paid for Marvel Studios (and Lucasfilm, etc.), assessing it in light of flagging audience delight, and rolling the dice on "subverting expectations" and "getting woke" to keep the money rolling in.

If it doesn't work, they probably aren't actually losing much compared to the natural downtrend and all the press keeps them in the conversation - good, bad or indifferent.

269 #193 "Technically, at one point, Thor kind of *was* just a job - Donald Blake was Thor and only became Thor with the hammer. And he was, IIRC, just a doctor from Earth, not the actual Norse deity."

Okay, it's been decades since I read those comics, but here's what I remember:

Thor was getting too obnoxious and Odin decided to teach him a lesson. So Odin trapped Thor on Earth with his memories wiped, and with a bad leg besides (he needed a cane to walk). Then after years of this, he decided to let Thor become himself again from time to time, and gave him back his hammer, but with an enchantment on it. "Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall wield the power of THOR" (something like that)

So Dr. Donald Blake went on vacation in Norway and found the hammer, and found that it turned him into Thor. And he could turn back into Dr. Donald Blake, and the hammer would become a cane so he always had a plausible reason to carry it everywhere he went.

The whole "teach Thor a lesson" thing, where Dr. Donald Blake was Thor all along, is plausibly a retcon. I'll bet they were making that stuff up as they went along; the initial setup was a straightforward secret identity thing.

Just as Superman had a weakness (Kryptonite), this version of Thor also had a weakness: he had to be near his hammer. And remember the hammer is a throwing weapon! It returns, but if someone could keep it from returning he would revert back to the frail Dr. Donald Blake.

By the 80's the comic was tired and not super popular, but then Walt Simonson started writing and drawing it, and he breathed new life into the comic. One of his stories had Odin tell Thor "you know, you've really learned your lesson, you don't have to be Dr. Donald Blake anymore." And Thor was a little bit sad because there were good aspects to his life as Dr. Donald Blake, but on the whole it was a positive step forward, and it removed his big weakness. Thor was now just Thor, the whole secret identity thing was played out. I thought it was another inspired idea from Walt Simonson.

That's what pisses me off about Ennis.

He turned Frank Castle into a sociopath.

The 'Born' comic was almost great and then it had to do that thing where the Punisher is the avatar of death personified (literally, he 'works' for death).

The Punisher is a Mack Bolan rip off who, when written well, kills bad guys who get away with flouting the law. He is a soldier fighting a war on crime.

308 I thought The Boys was a worthwhile binge with some subtle stuff to notice on second viewing too.

I don't know if I would call it woke or SJW by any stretch of the imagination though.

Sacrilegious, sure, but not woke.

I definitely think "Christians are the REAL bigots!!!" is textbook "WOKE" SJW bullshit.

Plus it's very ant-capitalism with the whole superhero "business" model being evil, etc.

I didn't think any of it was subtle. I can still enjoy media that doesn't reflect my politics, but I didn't think any of this was subtle.

Gotta say I had a similar reaction. It pushed all the wrong buttons for me. 30 minutes in, I wanted every character, including the bereaved boyfriend, to die a horrible death. It really felt like I was being hit on the head with some well-worn cudgels by some very, very lazy writers.

Good Omens is what you're thinking of. The book was pretty charming, the Amazon show is okay.

There have been a few Hogfather attempts and witches animated shows, but none really capture the appeal of the books.

Like most movies and TV shows, I guess. So maybe they're all pretty great if you don't read the books.

363 I'm a comic book geek, so I'll probably still watch some of these. I didn't watch Capt. Marvel and laughed when Thanos hit her with the Power Gem. Nobody really asked for a Guardians of the Galaxy movie, either, but both of those were great. True, the comics are SJW stuff, but a comic is easy to change. A movie, not so much. Nobody really wants to flush a multi million dollar movie down the tubes for some SJW points. I think Ace doth protest too much. The last man standing against Thanos was Cap (white, hetro, American) and while Capt. Bree Larson is on the cover of Ultimate Alliance 3, she's in the back. Marvel's own poster child for Toxic Masculinity, WOLVERINE, is in the front. If they were really pushing Larson, she'd be in front.
