True Conservative and NeverTrump Model of What a Real Republican Looks Like Mitt Romney: Let's Pass a Carbon Tax to Stop All This Deadly Global Warming

Hey, remember a few weeks back when I noted the new trend in Fake Republicanism, such as the kind practiced by Frank Luntz and David French, was to start talking up carbon taxes and leftist environmentalist dogma?

Well, here's your Third Time Proves the Rule.

From KUTV:

U.S. Sen. Mitt Romney said Monday that he believes climate change is happening and human activity is a significant contributor.

During a speech at the conservative Sutherland Institute in Salt Lake City, the senator acknowledged that the position is rare among his fellow Republicans, but one that younger people seem to respond to more strongly than older conservatives.

"In some respects, (by speaking with newer conservatives), I'll be able to make inroads with some of the young people coming along," he said...

...

Romney discussed the benefits of a carbon tax, a fee based on each ton of carbon dioxide emissions produced by fossil fuels that some major oil companies have adopted.

So bets, please: How long until the majority of NeverTrump gets behind this, all the while claiming that they're sticking with Eternal Conservative Principle while "grifters" adapt their positions to match Trump's?

Thanks to Deep State is Deep Shit.

The chief benefit will be to force our manufacturing jobs back to China, which is what this really about.

Seriously.

China doesn't and never will care about global warming, and with the Big Lie being exposed about "Free Trade," this is the only play they have left to get us to close our dirty, dirty factories and send all those jobs to China where they belong.

9 2012, it turns out in retrospect, WAS "The End of the World," as the new Agers were predicting at the time.

But not for the reason they thought.

It was the End of the World because we only had two choices for Global Leader: An anti-American socialist sociopath (Obama), vs. a virtue-signaling ultra-cuck (Romney).

Earth was fucked either way, it turned out.

Not one single other Country that signed onto the Paris agreement has managed to reduce it's emissions.

The New Hotness is to simply create unaccountable corporate masters who render the government powerless.

See, the First Amendment ties the government, but it protects corporations, who can fire you, wreck your life, doxx you, refuse to sell you things, etc. because you suck.

Just ask David French. He'll tell you that if all the grocery stores refuse to sell you food because your name is on a list of "bad people", that's okay because they are private businesses.

And they can do whatever they want.

Nothing, and I repeat NOTHING, produced even the slightest dent in the armor of his belief system. And I am, to be frank, a devastating debater in real life, as well as being (when I need to be) a very persuasive sneaky "counter-intuitive" underhanded conversation partner, in which I convince people to change their minds while pretending to agree with their original position.

None of that worked on this dude, over TWO DAYS of conversations/debate/arguments. Even though I destroyed every thought/belief/fact he imagined he knew.

These people are unfixable. They have a cult belief system that had reached the core of their souls and cannot be undone. Even if they all were on the verge of freezing to death, huddled in a cave wearing mammoth pelts are the glacier covered the last bit of land as the New Ice Age enveloped the earth, they'd STILL be worried about Global Warming and Carbon Footprints.

68 Romney is your basic unprincipled Chamber of Commerce representative and has taken McCain's spot as party contrarian designated to thwart Trumpism. I have become convinced that the major problems that Trump has with his own party is that far too many of them are bought by corporations. Perhaps, they see the whole American project crashing and burning on a large scale in the near future so they are getting it good while they can while making plans to scamper before the ballon goes up or they are simply corrupt uniparty members sharing the spoils.

Thus, the business of Democrats in Congress is amassing power while the business of the Republicans in Congress, by and large, is to let the Dems win but get rich doing so.

FWIW, Large MNC Corporations actually like corrupt nations because it is often cheaper to buy politicians than to comply with laws that the people want or are already on the books that restrict their activities.

The spread of cosmopolitanism in MNC leadership also basically view the common riff raff citizens of countries as serfs to be exploited. This New Class business managers share the same attitudes with its compatriots in government, higher education, and international non-profits.

Not that these folks actually know much history but we have been there before with foreigners brought in as a new class to oppress local populations on behalf of the King. Read the complaints about King John sometime before the Magna Carta for example and John's neglect of ruling his nation in favor of cavorting around with his French nobles seeking to regain his lands in France. To keep their support, he let them oppress the local English.

I uncorked so many game-over facts and explanations and arguments -- including sea levels -- that not one shred of the tapestry of his world view was left intact.

Still -- nada.

I even got him to accept and internalize my statements as true by pretending to be "on his side" the whole time. E.g. "Gee, we're all in agreement here, Climate Change is a terrible threat -- but I'm worried how we can counter the deniers when they point out, correctly, that the Antarctic ice is getting THICKER every years, and that the increase of ice in the Southern Hemisphere is greater than the decrease of Ice in the Northern Hemisphere, so that overall, globally, there's actually MORE ice than before. See how hard it is to argue with these lunatics? They always have some annoying comeback."

Even gambits like that wouldn't budge him.

something a lot of them thirst for - when you can just cater to the
eco-fascism that has been drummed into them by school, media, and

I was watching a kid's show with my son called Story Bots.
The show starts with a kid asking a general question, then the story bots go on a little adventure to find out the answer.
Of course they had a recycling episode.
They end up in a garbage dump which is basically depicted like a Mad Max wasteland. The viewer is told garbage dumps are horrible smelly places that among other things, can pollute our groundwater! Yep, even though all dumps of the last many decades are specifically engineered not to do that, they claimed dumps do.
But that wasn't all. The story bots then visit a recycling center which is beautiful and is run by a whimsical Willy Wonka type person. The factory is all animated like lovely cartoony Wonka devices. At no time did the factory get described like a real recycling plant which is loud, dangerous, and smelly.

Because there's no such thing as "usual." Depending on how far back you want to go, BOTH north and south could be considered far far below "normal." 219 AH Lloyd's idea is the better policy option as it allocates the costs of rising atmospheric carbon on those nations that are expanding their carbon footprint and making those goods pay for government spending to ameliorate the supposed damage.

Or you can go all in on Thorium type or pebble type reactors that are very resistant to meltdown (if it can happen at all) and the waste products cannot be readily converted into bomb material. Nuclear energy is pretty much best power source if you want to lessen carbon footprints but that would involve the messy thing of actually building these in the U.S. and allowing construction and manufacturing jobs to accrue to the benefit of U.S. citizens.

Even nuclear waste can be pretty much recycled into very small area if you reprocess the fuel as the French have been doing for decades.

Disloyalty to what exactly? Maybe their fellow Jews? Given how anti-semetic the left is, I don't think that's a terribly harsh criticism to say Jews need to make themselves aware of people like Omar and Tlaib and speak out against their rampant anti-Semitism.

Listen more carefully to the emotions expressed. What are they?

I even fell for it, at first.

I brought the idea to my dad, and he disabused me of the notion right away, when he pointed out the impossibility of it working to reduce anything besides profits for American firms.

That America was already the cleanest industrial power. That these "offsets" would amount to nothing more than a tax on small business and MSEs who didn't have the capital to meet the above-and-beyond threshold that large corporations could afford.

And that Chinese, Indian, and Mexican companies would sign on to an agreement of any kind, in the full expectation that we'd hold ourselves to account while letting rampant polluters run roughshod.

290 200 Psychology says that your approach works for about 80 percent of the population. It won't affect ideologues that are against you nor the ideologues that support your position.

About 80 to 85 percent of the population only thinks of policies in terms of rhetoric rather than actually being able to analyze facts using a logical framework. Thus, all policies that affect them will be rationalized as good or bad as far as it affect them--if it does not affect them directly, they will parrot whatever rhetoric has the upper hand in keeping their social status. They may also virtue signal in order to stay in the pack and keep their thoughts to themselves.

Ideologues have definite ideas about how the facts related to their internal model of how the world works. The problem is that if you begin with a bad foundation of assumptions, then the facts are interpreted in such a way to make your assumptions true or dismissed as not facts.

Only a relatively small percent of the population actually uses facts and logical reasoning on a continuing basis and adjusts their assumptions and framework as experience and history tells them they should. The personality type of empirical philosophers tends to indicate that the wise ones are aware we live in clown world and try to make the adjustments demanded by polite society to get by. See Voltaire's Candide for example. Or they simply become either withdrawn as hermits yelling at people to get off their lawns or they break down as did Cassandra before Troy fell.

Mittens is now a cancerous sore. That took some real work.

342 I think 90 to 100% of the "global warming" is urban heat island from increased development, and reduced particulate pollution causing more energy to reach the earth. This second factor is completely ignored by the current analyses.

Increased CO2 is mostly a good thing by itself. Increased temperatures are probably mostly a good thing (more rain, but also more heat in hot regions) but those positives are also totally ignored by any economic analysis.

CO2 tax would be highly regressive. I would be in favor off limiting people to one airplane trip every 6 months or so. (all people, especially asshole politicians) but that is just to make them live in a community and deal with local problems instead of being a scold to the whole world.

343 Even if I believed that AGW was a major threat, which I don't, and if I believed that it could be stopped, which I don't, I know for dam sure that carbon taxes won't fix it, and will in fact be diverted into the pockets of grifters, pols, and assorted bureaucratic thieves. It is SO bleeding obvious.

This strange new breed of conservatives believes, just like liberals do, that any problem can be solved by throwing money at it. Conservatives (those who "conserve") used to know better.

Saw another "news" article today about "stopping climate change." Proving once again, we live in an era of LIES and awful STUPIDITY. The Dark Ages have nothing on us, when it comes to sheer ignorance and superstition.

3. Every dollar shoved down that Big Gummint rathole is a dollar that can't be spent on actual clean-up of real pollution or the protection of habitat.

4. Except for Shabby Nadler, the air you exhale is not pollution. And none of this useless horseshit will alter global temperatures a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a degree a century from now--even if it worked!

354 I'm still trying to wrap my head around "carbon credits." I think it works like this:

Joe Blow says "I'm going to burn five trillion tons of coal. Sounds like a good project."

DiCaprio says "Don't do that. Here's a bazillion dollars in credits if you don't follow thru with your plan."

Joe Blow says "It's a deal!"

I mean, who knows if Joe Blow was serious in the first place?

Why not just make up fanciful plans for earth-destroying projects (with no real intention of actually doing them) and reap the money thrown at you for "abandoning" your fake project plans?

Libs (and new-breed conservatives, apparently) think every actor is pure in heart, and motivated by only the best intentions. It's completely ignorant of the reality of human nature.

Posted by: gp at August 20, 2019 07:17 PM (mk9aG)

355 I think a psychological profile of Mitt is in order. I think he's a real case study of a certain kind of pathology. Unresolved power-daddy issues (mirror image of Gore), the over-compensating money-making with the vulture capitalism, the failed campaign against Teddy and choking in the final debate, the strange self-sabotaging presidential campaign (mirroring McCain) especially after the first debate, the post-election murmurings about not even wanting to win, the absolutely vicious attacks on Trump obviously driven by malignant envy, the overweening need to kowtow to the Left. I think he's a sick puppy, but the sort who never gets exposed and keeps operating as some kind of respectable figure.

Exactly. Frankly, for many parts of the world, "climate change" might be a downright boon, if it truly *is* real. So far, it has not been, and I have been hearing doomsday for three decades on this.
