33 Saw "Angel Has Fallen" yesterday-

I'm a fan of the "...Has Fallen" series, so I had high hopes for this installment, and-

was not disappointed at all.

Tremendously entertaining movie from beginning to end.

Very fast pace. Barely stops to take a breath. Great action - the opening assassination attempt is simultaneously horrifying and awesome. Great directing.

Excellent acting all around.

I really like Gerard Butler as an action hero. Dude, is no Hollywood pretty boy. He looks like a thug. And real or no, his face looks like he's seen pain in his life.

Script is very good except when it's not. Some character motivations are shall we say unclear in the service of serving up big action and confrontations. SJW posturing kept to the barest of minimums.

If you want a pure popcorn adrenaline action movie in the style of the best 80s-90s action movies-

Go see "Angel Has Fallen".

Check it out.

Extra!

Stay for a silly but funny scene in the middle of the credits.

Bonus!

All of the "..Has Fallen" movies are excellent fun and highly entertaining. "London Has Fallen" is probably my fave. But, "Olympus Has Fallen" is great fun as well.

As I wrote in the previous thread, clerks did all of Thurgood Marshall's writing for the last 2 years he was on the Court, and they did all of Rhenquist's writing for his last 18 months (at least). It's an old tradition on the Court, even though it isn't talked about outside of the Legal Clergy.

Oh, excellent! We liked the first two - cheesy, action fun, pro-America. The second one - London Has Fallen - had some un-PC lines, such as after Gerard stabs the captured jihadi so his friend can hear the screams over the walkie-talkie. POTUS asks, "Did you have to do that?". Butler: "No."

47 re: ginsburg's health - remember that last year with John McCain? He went back home to Arizona to "convalesce", we were all saying he's dying, he's never going back to Washington.

Politicians and cronies and the MSM (but I repeat myself) would all say "oh he's recovering, he's doing fine!" We would say "he's dying, it's obvious." and they would say "no Chuck Schumer talked to him and he said "I fell Happy! I feel Happy!!!" that went on all year.

and suddenly one day - "John McCain is dead, what a shock, who could ever have seen that coming???"

I guess the only real point is that the Establishment and the MSM will openly and shamelessly lie about someone's condition right up until the moment that the dirt is shoveled on top of them.

USA Today - Only three days earlier at an event in Iowa, Biden initially misspoke, saying that Kennedy and King had been shot "in the late 1970's" instead of 1968.

Oh he just misspoke.

Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert F. Kennedy, who were assassinated within weeks of each other.

Biden said, "My senior semester, they were both shot and killed.

Joe was 25 in 1968. He was a senior? In college or high school?

I remember because I was such a big supporter of the E.R.A. in 1972,
quote - to show you how things have changed, thank God - 'Well, you know
why Biden is for the E.R.A., he's probably gay.' Not a joke," Biden
recalled.

I can't recall the wording, but when my son was six I asked him if he wanted to some new animated movie, and he very matter of fact explained to me why he didn't" All these movies are the same. There's this monster or scary animal or alien and everyone hates them, Then one kid decides to be friends with them. For people who hate it:

Go to truecar.com and price what you want.

Take the printout with you to the dealership. Tell them you are going to buy a car and would like to buy it from them, but can just as easily go through the website and get it from someone else. Walk out if they start acting ridiculous and just go through truecar instead which is probably much easier anyway.

227 hate car shopping, I always feel icky dealing with dealerships. I also always feel like I'm getting ripped off..."

I've bought Toyotas for a long time. When I first did it, it was pretty much a sellers market and there wasn't much room for haggling. That didn't stop my wife from repeating the bullshit her deadbeat father spouted about how you had to play hardball with them. I told her those were different times while wanting to dig up his corpse to burn it.

Then one time I was leasing a Camry and got a mailer saying my lease was about to expire and I should check out their Presidents Day deals. I thought the lease was further out than they thought but went in anyway. I got what seemed like a good deal on a Corolla and they would eat the last few payments. So I signed the contract and turned over the Camry, a car I really liked. Of course my wife bitched that I hadn't haggled and I'm thinking STFU.

The next day at work I got a phone call from the sales guy saying they'd screwed up the time left on the lease and they'd be eating a lot more of the payments. I said first of all I don't appreciate you calling me at work about this; second I was only there because of your company's notification about the time left on the lease and I'll be in later to discuss this but I don't think we have much to talk about because your complaint is against whoever in your company screwed up.

When I went in I was pissed off about being there and told him the only way I'd budge off of what I signed was for him to get the Camry back and I'd pay every fucking payment left as long as I got use of the car. He said that's impossible and I said then that's that. I told him I was sorry that happened to him but his complaint was with the bean counter who screwed up.

My wife, realizing how much we saved, never complained again.

Professional athletes are aware there's a time limit to their careers. Actors don't seem to have that perspective.
Some can keep working until they're very old, But others will fade away with their good looks or just disappear after a few good roles.
I'd think they would go into the industry prepared to fade away some away.
Maybe that's why why some (Alyssa Milano) become nasty activists-they can't let go of the spotlight.

258 When buying a new car, email 5 or 6 dealerships with your offer. See who bites. Every model is discounted a certain % on average every month. Go to Edmunds and you can get a good sense of what the discount is at any given point in time.

Say a Camry is going for 7% off MSRP. Email a bunch of dealers with an offer of 9% off. They'll counted back tith 6 or 7 usually. But every now and then you may get lucky and get one that accepts 9%.

Also never mix financing and the price. They are two separate issues. Negotiate price. Then worry about financing later. Or put another way don't negotiate a monthly payment, negotiate the price of the car. The monthly payment will work itself out.

And also, if you want to buy with cash, don't. Usually there are financing incentives. So take the loan, then pay it off the next month. You pay $50 in interest but you get the $1500 finance incentive.

I agree with this.
You could also explore the option of a one-time lease payment, I.e, pay the entire lease (however many years you choose) up front. So I paid something like $20,000 for my Camry. When the term runs out you decide what you want to do with the car.

278 Professional athletes are aware there's a time limit to their careers.

Male actors can often work for decades, transitioning (if they have the talent) from pretty-boy and then leading-man roles to character roles. See Paul Newman, Edward G. Robinson (though he was hardly ever a male model type), Charlton Heston, etc.

With actresses, a good part of their appeal when young is their youthful attractiveness. If they have enormous talent, they too can transition to character roles. See Meryl Streep, Jessica Lange, Joanne Woodward, etc.

But in both cases, it's rarer than you'd like to think.

Men age differently than women and that reflects acting roles.

Young hearthrobs can in time because wise old men if they have the acting chops.

Milano and a lot of female actresses didn't act so much as look pretty for the camera and take their clothes off. Once this get past 40, they're no longer much to look at and there are newer, prettier girls ready to step up.

Women that can actually ACT don't have that problem, which is how former sex kittens can turn in great roles as matriarchs and so on.

I've only recently been able to move to the level of cars which run $20K or so, when used (though with some warranty). And I pay them off early to save interest. But to pop $20K in one payment --!

My most recent car purchase, the '16 Buick, had been sitting on the dealer's lot for a couple of months, so they had reduced the price more than once (I saw that online) to try to move it. It was $4K less than the exact same model at a dealer outside of town. I put a good part of my insurance settlement from the totaled previous car down, and I have a payment I'm fine with.

I'll also talk to my credit union about a lower interest rate, though 4% nowadays doesn't seem bad.

Personally I would not hunt anything, but unlike Hammil and his ilk I'm not such an arrogant douchebag that I think my distaste should rule the world.

337 Extinction Happens : Get Over It

Posted by: garrett at August 24, 2019 11:24 AM (xXqhO)

338 Trump should be a candidate for Congressional medal of honor or some other equivalent award (an American Nobel prize) for how he has sedulously maneuvered China and America into this precise trade negotiation moment. From the early 1980s Trump has been talking about China and its trade depredations while not a single American political (or business) leader said a word about it. Now for three years he has patiently played a chess game to get us where we are now. The abysmal ignorance and plain anti-Americanism of the elite not to recognize or appreciate this is spectacularly obvious.

339 Yah, but why shoot them ? Shooting elephants is not sporting. They are becoming extinct. Leave them alone, I say.

Just my opinion, but when someone pays to kill an animal, for bragging/ego rights, then that person is simply an unfeeling, flaming shitheel.

If they make it to the Pearly Gates, they're gonna have a hard time explaining to St. Peter why they wantonly killed one of God's creatures.

340 Elephant trivia: African elephants (big ears) can't be trained. Indian elephants (little ears) are very malleable.

If you watch the original Tarzan movies, like Tarzan and His Mate (1932, Maureen O'Sullivan barely wears clothes) look closely at the elephants.

They're Indian elephants with huge cardboard ears taped on.

342 "After a drive, I can smell burnt coolant near the engine. But it took four years for the level of the coolant in the surge tank to drop visibly. And it has never overheated. I will just live with it until it becomes a problem, if it ever does.

06 Volvo V-70 wagon has been doing that for about 70,000 miles.

Once per quarter, I top off the expansion tank with about 4 ounces of coolant mixture..

Car will remain doing this till the day we get rid of it.

This is stupid. You can't hunt Free Range anything in Africa.

You pay to hunt overseas. Period.

You have no 'right' to pursue exotic game in exotic climes.

Now. I don't hunt Africa because you can't take your meat home or even eat it. It goes to the villagers.

My take is that the reason Brain Damaged Joe is first in the polls is that the general public sees him as the most sane of the Kommie Klown Kar riders. Bubble Brain Biden. The most sane.

Posted by: garrett at August 24, 2019 11:22 AM (xXqhO)

No, then I would smell it in the cabin. Mostly near the left side of the hood. Might be a head gasket seep, or a frost plug. Never seems to get worse. If it ever gets to the point of leaving a puddle, I will track it down and fix it.

357 You could also explore the option of a one-time lease payment, I.e, pay the entire lease (however many years you choose) up front. So I paid something like $20,000 for my Camry. When the term runs out you decide what you want to do with the car.

NO NO NO NO NO
Do not do that.

If you total the car, or it gets stolen, you are out all the money. And no, Gap insurance doesn't cover it. Gap covers the difference between the insurance payout and the value of the car. But the lease is a separate thing. That money is gone.

I'll be more impressed if the contest were more even. Like Niven's sentient bandersnatch where the limitations put on the hunting equipment leads to 40% of the hunters never returning.
