My older sister used to teach at Shawnee State in Southern Ohio, and it was a long drive home at night.
Her husband took a .410 shotgun and sawed off the barrel (totally illegal) and she carried it under her driver's seat.....just in case.
Totally illegal, but inside of 10 feet, totally deadly. She's kind of little too, and could be overpowered by a hyper squirrel (is that an exaggeration?)

I had forgotten this, but I was driving an International Harvester TravelAll (precursor to the Suburban) when I lost a rear wheel (bearing failure). I had driven hundreds of miles in that beast towing a loaded four horse trailer for daughter H's Pony Club. But, it never failed me in those situations. Just don't go in a tank top, shorts, and flips flops. I see it all the time with first time shooters. A crew neck shirt is fine. If hot brass bounces off you quickly, no problem. You just don't want to give it a place to get stuck, that's when you get burned.

If you haven't heard Robbie Robertson's 1987 solo album, do your ears a favor and get to it. Which is confusing to me, given how I have listened my entire life to Europeans telling me how everyone there has access to free healthcare. Another point of confusion to me, since I have never personally met a European who did not also pay for a fair amount of private insurance to cover everything this allegedly free and allegedly excellent healthcare did not provide for.
Between that and all the Canadians coming down for cancer treatments and heart surgeries, it's almost as if free government healthcare is not what it's cracked up to be.

Saw that happen in rush our traffic in Houston. Tire came off the car ahead of me, crossed over the median and hit a car. Last I saw of the tire it was 10 feet off the ground and still climbing.

There's still an opportunity cost for the space, whether it was being used before or not. If it's successful, at all, then the value of those rooftops will probably rise so that it doesn't make sense to waste them on "farming", as happened with every other piece of habitable land on Earth close to a population center (let alone IN the population center!).

No, the killer is the labor force: 20 people! Sounds like full-time, too, not just a bunch of Mexicans for a week during harvest season. Assuming they get French minimum wage and benefits, that's at least 1600 Euros a day. That's on top of seed, water, power, rent or mortgage, taxes, and overhead. All of a sudden a ton of vegetables a day doesn't seem so cheap.

We just caught our first usable Cuke today. There was one hidden that I didn't see got too big and old dammit. I have a limited Garden this year but we got some cukes tomatoes and onions coming on.
Maybe some small pumpkins if they mature fast enough and also a late planting of green beans and peas. Have a vegtrug so I can cover them if it starts to get too cold too soon.

You can from greenhouses, hydroponic, elevated cow, etc. Tomatoes exceeded 6 tons per day/acre in one greenhouse.

They are not just putting a couple of small potted plants up there. Typical roof decks are not even designed for pedestrian loads. The whole structure has to carry to carry the plants, soil, and water. Roof membrane itself has to be more durable as well.
It is a vanity project.

I drove on I-80 from Cali to the East. There was a section entering Utah that looked straight on the map. Really straight.
If I tell you I have never been on a road that was so long and so straight and there was NOTHING else around. Nothing but road. No trees, no hills, no nothing. It didn't even look like ground. Just road. Dead straight. About 70 miles. Unreal.
Go look at it on the map. It's straighter than the map shows, which is perfectly straight.
Sadly, I did that in an old Honda 1200cc Civic that would vibrate uncontrollably at 85 mph. I was being passed by double trailers and everyone else. It was the longest drag strip in the universe.

Even an ordinary roof is very expensive to maintain. Put tons of damp soil on top, every repair adds the cost of excavation, and the damp rots the roof.
I'm all on board for painting roofs reflective/white, but holy crap they charge a fortune for those coatings too.
If I ever have to do my house roof again (done it twice already,) it will bankrupt me.

The San Mateo Bridge in the Bay Area goes up leaving San Mateo (to provide a shipping channel), goes back down, makes a curve, and then is dead straight and level for about five miles.
When it was opened, there were numerous accidents at night, because people were mesmerized by the apparently unchanging lighted view driving along the straight part, flanked by the dark Bay.
So, they put in frequent numeric markers that changed, to provide a visual cue that you were really moving. Halfway through the stretch, they changed the numbering system. in case you were starting to get mesmerized by the markers.

I have the worst brown thumb of anyone I know, have known, or will ever know. I have been known to kill cactus plants. So having orchid plants that stay alive and bloom, and one prolific mango and one avocado tree to me is a miracle. I gladly collect the yearly onslaught of mangos and eat or give away as many as possible. Same with the avocados. I am currently growing in large pots twelve mango trees from seeds from my one big mango tree! (Keeping my fingers crossed...)

You can find lots of incidents of police firing loads of rounds at a suspect or perp and missing with most of them - even at POINT BLANK range. (Diallo, in NYC, everyone *inside* a building entry vestibule; 42 rounds IIRC, and fewer than 20 hit Diallo; less than 10 feet.) (Cops in CA firing 100+ shots at the poor ladies delivering newspapers; they didn't hit EITHER of the women, though 2 rounds did hit the back window of the cab, providing shrapnel injuries to one of the women.)

As are the stations. True train culture/country, with all the virtues that play into it. Amazing food, stores, and everything tailored for train travel [and nobody matches Japan for packaging, and "small" stuff].
Deregulation etc. has made air travel the better option for longer trips [Tokyo to Kagoshima, almost the length of the country, for example]. But as a gaijin visitor, trains have the added virtue of *seeing the country*, in detail.
Have had some great short trips, outside major urban areas - trains are small, some have had old cars with wooden seating almost too small to fit in.

The "scenery" is typically bland, dirty farms or the grubby industrial areas the grow up around rail lines. On most passenger trains (in my experience) the best you'll see is the inside of a tunnel.

He seems to be saying that the legal structure set up by Congress allows the federal government to make a value determination, pay the owner that money (put it in some account) and then the land belongs to the government even though the owner might still be protesting and fighting the valuation.
It doesn't sound totally unreasonable. Since the government certainly has the power in the black and white text of the Constitution for a taking, the question is only one of the just compensation, not whether the property can be transferred. IT most certainly can in all instances.

I really couldn't say. I know there is stuff out there, but no clue how any of it is. The best thing I can tell somebody is to look up chord charts on the web, and learn all the major and minor chords from A to G. Get those learned, and while you are doing that you build finger strength and some muscle memory, which allows you to eventually change chords fast. Then you can look up tabs for songs you might want to play. Tabs aren't written music, but more like a drawing of a fingerboard with all the strings, and the tabs show you what notes to press. There are also chords shown, so IF...IF you learned the basic chords ahead of time, there won't be many new chords to learn in a certain song, like 7ths, and other chords. Basically you are arming yourself with enough knowledge of chords to get started and gradually building on top of that. You'll also develop somewhat of a tone recognition, and you might "recognize" the chords in songs you listen to. After a while should you want to learn to read music, or move onto actual instruction you won't be so much of a novice. Think if it as somebody looking to learn car mechanics but already knows how the tools feel in their hands. There are also a ton of vids on you tube for basic instruction too, which may pay to watch so you don't develop bad habits out of the gate.

North-south roads sometimes do a jog like that at a correction line. Reason for the correction being that plane geometry, i.e. land survey, is applied to a sphere. True north-south roads will all converge at the poles, but land is surveyed in squares with parallel sides. So in the township-and-range system of land survey, from time to time you have to drop a range road out. I can drive north or south on my range road, and eventually it will end in a "T" intersection at a township (E-W) road. And I can jog a short distance east or west, and pick up the extension of that road. When highways are built, following old road allowances, those correction lines get made into "S" bends.
East-west roads don have correction lines because they follow parallels of latitude. Which are, surprisingly, parallel.

There's also something called I-45.
I'm sure a good percentage of these people who fly from either DFW-IAH or DAL-HOU aren't necessarily clamoring for it either because if it were economically feasible the train would have been done ages ago.
For about 30 years (it comes up again and again) there has been a proposal to have high speed rail connect San Antonio, Austin, Dallas and Houston. And it has never gone anywhere. Why? It would cost BILLIONS, and nearly ALL of it would be government money. (People who support this boondoggle blame SWA for ending it, when in truth it was the appalling ESTIMATE of cost that killed it on its own. The experience of CA with their high speed choo choo is - or should be - further deterrence from such a venture.)
And if you notice, where do passenger trains run in the United States, and work reasonably well? Why, the NE, where populations are denser. Oh, sure, I guess we COULD build a bullet train from Lubbock to Amarillo, but if you've been out that way, you know there is a whole lot of empty space out there. It is far cheaper and more cost effective to let drivers pick either I-27 or US 87 for the drive. And as heavily populated as that triangle I described above is, it isn't nearly populated enough to support a train.

Let's not underestimate the joys of driving on I-95 from Washington, D.C. to Boston, either; the I-95 tolls are a bonus. That drive is another reason the D.C. to NY and NY to Boston air shuttles are viable, too, although with all the airport security theater bullshit, the train is still quicker. Having taken the air shuttles and the train between DC-NY and NY-Boston, I'll take the train any day. Not to mention leg room and being able to drink in a comfortable seat. No waiting for takeoff to drink, either. There's no air turbulence to spill one's drink although a derailment will ruin your day.

If you want to keep the systems solvent you need to dangle the carrot a few years farther out than you did for previous generations. disability claims will likely remain valid and those will include those subject to age related infirmities.

For one thing, that's not actually true in the US or the UK. Life expectancy has gone down (a tiny bit) in the last decade or so.
Beyond that, the problem with raising the retirement age is a lot of people are too sick to work long before 75. We've extended people's life expectancy, but we haven't extended their healthy years.
Also, it is frankly bullshit to promise someone a retirement age of 65 and then, after taking money out of their check for four decades, pulling a bait and switch like that.

And now a couple of thousand people will have access to tomatoes, all while farmers are delivering the same tomatoes to the Aldis two blocks away already.

This is what I point out to my kids any time we see this kind of nonsense.
We went to a zoo that had a big "yay look at us" type display on it once and we talked about how much energy it took to make a "green" roof that would cost $700 to shingle and hang gutters from.
I enjoyed that trip because there was a community garden across the street and we got to talk about how adamantly pro-wall all the leftist owners of the cars in the parking lot obviously were.

I suppose it might depend on the length of the trip. I took a 30 hour trip by train a few years back. Seats were fine, except if you wanted to sleep. I managed to doze somewhat, but it was near impossible to find a comfortable position.

If your idea flies and Facebook buys you out, they are there for the IP and customer lists, not your employees or cubicle furniture. If it fails, you don't have to liquidate and suffer from having eight more months on your lease.
It allows more sketchy companies, or companies that are growing too fast or aren't well capitalized to run and grow rather that not ever happen because of start up costs.

I can't believe there are enough people/small companies/start ups that don't have their own office space. Seems too "fly by night" for me.

20+ years ago, when I was making the rounds interviewing for my first job after the Army, one outfit was set up to share receptionist and meeting room with another company. Dunno about restrooms and break room, but I expect those were shared, too.

I get that some who serve view themselves as the animating spirit of the 2nd amendment militia clause but Crenshaw adopting the mass shooters as terrorists construction is disturbing.
Mass shooters are not connected or affiliated with each other, they do not have a specific cause or agenda that they are trying to advance, to the extent they are "terrorizing" they are terrorizing their specific targets and not society as a whole.
Crenshaw is a dipshit.
