63 I never know what to think about Bosch. His artistic skill of color choice, brush work and so forth are overwhelmed by the bizarre image. There's a feel of Salvadore Dali mixed with Rod Serling. I'm sure there is a lot of symbolism used I'm not aware of but Bosch came up with some weird stuff.

84 Most of my band practices were in rehearsal rooms, or studios, or maybe someone's garage or basement.

Can't say I ever had one in an egg. But...I CAN say that I had many band practices in a studio made out of a converted building on a former egg farm. Farm? Whatever you call the places where they got the eggs from the chickens and stored them and the delivery guys loaded them up and delivered them.

The studio had once been the building where the eggs were stored. Had thick wooden walls, and an outer area that had once served as a breakroom/locker room for the deliverymen, that had been converted into a breakroom/lunchroom. Cool studio.

Don't take it from me, James Carville said it. And he was right. The problem with Texas is it has four or five Philly's and they are growing exponentially.

He is more dark magical realism than steampunk.

Up to where he gets into his Fisher King cycle he is wonderful. He started out as apocalyptic Southern California sci-fi, went to historical Magical Realism, and then went into a place where the world is actually a conspiracy theory.

anything up to The Stress of Her Regard (which combines elements of the Nephilim with Lord Byron) is good. Beyond that it becomes . . . Hermetic. In the classical sense with hidden knowledge and interpenetration of the spirit and the real world.

On the Miss Nevada disqualification for being a Trumo supporter.

Google searches for Miss Nevada dont show anything about the story.

Google searches for Katie Jo Williams will NOT auto complete and the search for her complete name reveal no stories about the disqualification on the first three pages.

ONLY if you Google "Katie Jo Williams disqualification" will you find any stories about getting kicked out of the USA Pageant.

Deep East, North Central blackland, Hill County, Rio Grande Valley, Llano Estacado, Central, and then Houston might as well be a state all on it's own - the Houston Metro population would qualify it as the 15th biggest state all by itself.

384 OT:

I'm in the very beginning stages of conceiving of a new book. Generational epic. Hopefully set in America, though I'm open to setting it elsewhere.

Anyway, I need a series of conflicts that fall a certain way. The main character needs to be present at a battle that goes pear shaped real bad so he can be praised for countervailing views before the battle. Is the praise undeserved? He certainly seems to think so.

He goes home during either winter quarters or a complete cessation of hostilities where he becomes some sort of weak leader of a splintered family. He then is called back into war some time later. The factions of the family back home hope that the conflict weakens his position in the family, but he succeeds in battle brilliantly, returning back home with laurels, increased power within the family, but an embittered enemy within the family.

I'd also like it if the main character was a couple of generations removed from another major American conflict that could operate as some sort of source of conflict within the family that's lasted for decades.

I was hoping to use World War I, but it looks like American never lost a battle, though my quick Wikipedia research could be wrong. Also, there's no major conflict immediately preceding it that would fit (the Mexican Revolution almost fit, but the only major loss involved the Buffalo Soldiers, which doesn't really fit). I wanted to avoid the Civil War for reasons I can't explain, but it looks like if I pursue this idea, it'll be the Civil War.

Precisely. Hill A was Ghibbiline, Hill B was Guelph, they fought for awhile, then the French or the Emperor came and ravaged the countryside, then they left, then Hill A (Ghibbiline) went back to trading raids with Hill B (Guelph). This can go on for a long, long time.

I wanted to avoid the Civil War for reasons I can't explain, but it looks like if I pursue this idea, it'll be the Civil War.
Posted by: TheJamesMadison, The Black Mamba at August 20, 2019 10:52 AM (iikV

It happened on both sides over and over in the Civil War. There were some monumental fuck-ups in WW2 that got glossed over, especially in the Italian Campaign. I read some time ago about a place called the Hurtgen Forest, on the German Border, in the fall of 1944. It eventually was overshadowed and forgotten because of the Battle of the Bulge that followed, but the American command wasted a huge number of troops and resources there and accomplished nothing at all for 3 full months.

The American experience in WW1 was really quite short.

No, I never said we are going to win every battle. But we are winning more than we are losing these days.

The most profound and at the same time most overlooked thing that has happened over the last 2 1/2 years is a reshaping of the courts from the SC on down. This has been the single biggest weapon the left has had for the last 50+ years and it is being taken away from them. No more writing laws from the bench when they couldn't get them through Congress.

If Trump can be successful in stopping or at least dramatically slowing the influx of 3rd worlders through illegal immigration and get us back on the track of merit based immigration, people coming here because they want to be Americans and want to assimilate, another huge weapon of the left gets removed.

And no, I don't buy that the left will find some magical way to insure they are never out of power. Their move to the extreme left is not a recipe for electoral success outside of deep blue pockets of the country.

Quitting is not an option. I'd rather beat them. And we are right now and if we don't go all wobbly we will continue to beat them.

The only thing that prevents that scenario is if the Democratic Party fractures along opportunist (I can't quite call them realist or pragmatic) vs. utopian lines.

440 Hurtgen Forest was, as Tom noted, very very bad. Futile, and poorly executed. Even with the vast improvement [via the hard teacher of experience] in American military competence over the previous 2+ years, it was still possible for our command to bungle things. But the silly historically illiterate notion of wars as nearly instant, easy, smooth operations, free of trial and error, that developed after Vietnam [paradoxically], couldn't even comprehend the reality of WWII.

==========

I'm hoping for a late 19th or early 20th century feel to the stuff at home. No telephones, that sort of thing, so I'm blocking out World War II.

World War I's briefness could have worked, especially if it was limited to that second conflict where the main character has wild successes, but there doesn't seem to be anything before it that would fit a loss.

And yeah, the Civil War is so big, long, and rich that it would easily fit. I don't really know why I'm resistant to using it, but I am.

Some of the gags went on too long. Like the opening "surf/skeet" musical number. That would've been a good 30-second gag but they managed to drag it out for 5 minutes and it went from funny to boring.

On the other hand, the sight gags, like the "little German" and the scene with the giant telephone in the foreground, were hilarious
