Saturday Overnight Open Thread (8/17/19)

The Saturday Night Joke

Once upon a time, a Prince asked a beautiful Princess,

“Will you marry me?”

The Princess emphatically replied, “No!”

And the Prince lived happily ever after,
and
rode motorcycles
and
dated thin, long-legged, full-breasted women,
and
hunted and fished
and
raced cars, and went to titty bars
and
dated ladies half his age
and
drank whiskey, beer, and Captain Morgan,
and
never heard any bitching
and
never paid child support or alimony,
and
dated cheerleaders
and
kept his house and sports memorabilia,
and
ate spam, potato chips and beans,
and
blew enormous farts,
and
never got cheated on while he was at work,
and
had lots of dogs
and
all his friends and family thought
he was cool as hell,
and
had tons of money in the bank,
and...
left the toilet seat up.

The End H/T Legally Sufficient

Once upon a time I was a bachelor. Never, ever thought of doing this.

Out of 1,000 people responding to an informal poll conducted by the underwear maker, 45% admitted they had worn the same pair of undies for two or more days, with 13% saying they had worn the same pair for a week or more, Tommy John said.

“Conventional wisdom — and basic common sense — tells us that we should change our underwear every day, or at least wash them after every wear,” Tommy John said in its statement announcing the results. “But how many people actually follow this golden rule? After surveying 1,000 Americans, we found that this basic standard of underwear hygiene is definitely not universal.”

We previously covered this on The ONT, IIRC under the topic of long bows vs. cross bows. Cross bows for the win if you are a cultist. H/T Bitter Clinger

Members of German crossbow sex cult suicide pact took knock-out drops before they were willingly killed in attempt to be 'reborn in a higher realm', investigators believe

In May, a man and a woman were found with crossbow bolts through the heart, the female shooter had then turned the weapon on herself in Bavaria

Two days later, two other women who belonged to the sex cult were found dead 400 miles north in Wittengen

Detectives revealed today the two shot by crossbow had taken a knock-out narcotic, similar to a date rape drug, before they were willingly killed

Two found at the separate address are believed to have poisoned themselves

He is honest. But still a Genius Award Winner.

A suspect who used a stolen debit card to purchase a cell phone, beer, and cigarettes signed the sales receipts as “Thief,” according to a Pennsylvania court filing.

Police report that the male suspect swiped the card from a woman who gave him a ride home from a bar last week. The debit card, cops say, was inside a purse in the center console of the woman’s vehicle.

The victim, Joei Thompson, noticed the purse was missing the following day and filed a report with police in Butler, a Pittsburgh suburb. But Thompson’s debit card had already been used to purchase a $200 iPhone 6S at a MetroPCS store and a case of beer and pack of cigarettes from Butler Beer and Tobacco

My mom sure did. But the ironic thing about that is - if you are busted up enough to wake up in the ER, you really don't care what your apparel looks like.

Mom worked midnights in the delivery room - a number of times she'd sit at the breakfast table and tell her brood that she sent a patient back down to the ER to be hosed off so that the patient was clean enough to participate in a safe delivery.

Thanks Mom!

Just like the one I recently saw: July 2019 Hottest Evar! Despite the fact that me and Mrs. Mahon drove to Steamboat Springs in mid-July, and saw six or more inches of fresh snow on the passes (Cameron and Rabbit Ears). We saw rain and swollen rivers all the way to Meeker.

157 There is a reporter for a Portland alt-weekly named Katie Shepherd. She mostly writes about Antifa (or "anti-fascists", as she puts it). She is completely and utterly pro-Antifa - her stuff reads like North Korean propaganda on behalf of Antifa.

It would not surprise me in the slightest to discover that she lets Rose City Antifa review her articles prior to publication.

Well, Katie isn't going to be writing for the alt-weekly anymore. She has been hired by the Washington Post.

Aside from the fact that it is astonishing that anyone would read her stuff and think. "this is just the sort of thing I want her to write for my paper!", I do wonder what Bezos is thinking.

Not that Bezos makes individual hiring decisions, but he does control the direction of the paper. Antifa is comprised of individuals that would stand by the roadside and cheer as Bezos was trundled off to the guillotine.

I'm sure he thinks that Antifa is a useful ally against Trump, but if things ever go south in this country, I'm not sure if Bezos has thought through the consequences of encouraging an organization that generally believes that all rich people should be executed.

Academic tip, since you're unlikely to use it. Out on the outer Cape go to a beach. Say, Head of the Meadow Beach in Truro. Walk down the beach a mile or two.

There are only so many access points and nobody walks more than a few hundred yards or half a mile at most. Walk more than a mile and you have the best beach in the world all to yourselves and you can enjoy the liberating nekkidness.

This isn't theory, I have pictures.

Yes! We plan move around late October/early November if all goes to plan. The house will supposedly be built/installed in 6-8 weeks. Also need well and septic done and power hooked up as well as gas. Then we will have a place that is not finished completely (deck on back, porch front and other improvements) but can be moved into. We've sold our house here, have to close by Dec. 6 but plan to before then. I cannot wait to get back home-ish and be close to my family/friends!

When I lived in Montana, we had a summer (1993) that really was not a summer. Rained every day. Saw snow in the Bozeman area even in July. 4th of July in Cody WY, it was cold and cloudy, upper 50s. Truly bizarre.

This summer in CO might not be that crazy, but it has not been any kind of what I usually see here.

Just a week ago we were driving through the Flat Tops and saw rain and temps in the upper 50s.

266 Walmart does not create the customer, nor the associate. Walmart accepts the customer and associate it is dealt. The Walmart stores in my AO are well-run and the customers are not what the stereotype suggests.

that said, there are Walmart stores I avoid, like Commerce City CO.

I just get tired of the reversed mindset that Walmart is what creates the fucked up mess of humanity that graces its aisles.

Full disclosure, I was once a Walmart associate, during the glorious Obama-nation. So I do have a god in the hunt.

I really like WalMart but the level of worker they have at some of their stores has plummeted over the past few years. Just awful. People with no concept of retail business. No concept of anything, to be honest.

The WalMarts used to be run pretty well but most of them around me are going downhill fast. There are some WalMarts that I avoid - not because of the customers but because of the asshole retards they have manning the stores, now.

A lot of the crap you hear about Walmart is due to the sheer size of the company. There's a phrase, "Walmart scale". If there are million to one odds against some weird-assed, totally fucked up customer interaction occurring, that thing will happen an average of *ten times a day* at some Walmart somewhere.

280 In my yewt I frequented a couple of wilderness hot springs in Idaho. Clothing was optional although I can't recall ever seeing any. The most popular one was about 11/2 hrs from Missoula.

We had a family vacation in Montana, flew in and out of Oregon. On the way back I looked at a map. There was a straight line that went to Eugene, and half an inch under it there was another parallel line going all the way across.

Lolo Hot Springs was on the lower line. I've never been to a natural hot spring and also Lolo was featured in A River Runs Through It, so I asked the wife if we could go the half inch out of our way and she said sure.

Well, when we got to the first straight line there was a sign that said Lolo 120 miles. Those westerners sure have an odd idea of scale. We didn't have 240 miles in the time budget.

365 I had a proto-libertarian insight on a nude beach. Nantucket, between Surfside and Miacomet.

There were naked people up and down the beach but at distances, from 200 yards you can't tell whether a young skinny person is a boy or a girl. I was smoking a joint. I was with the naked girl that I was going to marry. I had salt drying on my skin from having swum in the ocean.

And I thought this is the best I've ever felt and I'm not hurting anyone. Society may frown on the nudity and the ganja, but I'm just sitting here bothering no one and it's spectacular.

I found the closest Walmart/Target (I forget which) and bought a six-pack each of briefs and socks, along with a cheap shirt and a pair of shorts. Hmmm. In the picture, the center screw, that holds the bow assembly to the stock, is not all the way in. And the four little flathead screws that hold the bow leaves (?) to the center section are not fully countersunk. As far as I can see, there is no advantage to be gained by countersinking those little screws, and round-head screws without countersunk holes would make for a stronger assembly.

I have a 4-post drive-on lift in my shop here. First thing I do, after raising a vehicle, is walk around and verify that all 4 pawls have securely latched in the "ladders". Then I give the whole thing a shake. If it seems solid, I am good to go.

I would love to know how that happened. Must have been a very serious threat to herself or others.

Heather Locklear has pleaded no contest to charges that she fought with first responders during two visits to her Southern California home last year.

Locklear entered the plea in Ventura County court Friday afternoon to five counts of battery on a peace officer, one count of battery on emergency personnel and two counts of resisting, obstructing or delaying a peace officer.

A judge sentenced her to 120 days in jail, but the sentence was stayed pending completion of a substance-abuse treatment program.

The 57-year-old "Melrose Place" and "T.J. Hooker" actress was also sentenced to three years' probation.

Deputies and paramedics answering calls about domestic disputes at Locklear's home in March and June of 2018 said that she pushed, kicked and shouted at them.

'Bout the time I was a sixth grader, we got new neighbors in the corner house. Japanese, and he was once Imperial Japanese Navy.

He was one of the few survivors of having been sunk by U.S. Navy forces, and rescued by the same.

The fact that he had accepted rescue, forever stained his name in Japan, and so he applied for immigration to the U.S., and went through the process.

They moved in 'round about 1972. He had just became a U.S. Citizen. He and his family prospered, and became successful.

Sadly, I could never attract the attention of his also same age as me daughter. I was Gaijin, even there in San Diego, USA.

Nuked too much, or not enough?

Van Der Leun asks the question, often. And I still don't know exactly the correct answer, thereto.

576 The main challenge with German POWs was determining who the hard core were - there was always a small group of true believers - and separating them out [different camps]. I believe the hard core killed another prisoner at Concordia, and probably elsewhere.

Kind of predictable. Relieved, safe, well treated young German soldier finds a friendly huge beautiful country, is naturally disarmed and content. Nazis go nuts at this, attempt to enforce discipline - fail.

I think it was at Concordia - or maybe Windsor up in Sonoma - the POWs later told stories about waking their "guard" - who was napping - when their agricultural day labor was done. Think one time a guard lost his shotgun and they found it for him, too.

Definitely the part of the war to be in, looking at it from one perspective.

Pre Industrial Revolution, it used to be that when you captured and invested a Capital City, it was pretty much the same thing as in the Chess Thread, you topple the King.

Stailin, withdrawing East of the Urals though, drew up an entirely different Chessboard.

And Adolph sucked at 3-D chess, altogether.

Bet there's already a video of him sucking at 3-D chess, too.

634 the POWs later told stories about waking their "guard" - who was napping - when their agricultural day labor was done. Think one time a guard lost his shotgun and they found it for him, too.

I knew someone whose father guarded Italian POWs in the United States during WWII. After they had selected out the handful of Italian Fascists, the remaining Italian prisoners were not viewed as a security risk, to put it mildly. There were not a lot of guards assigned, so things were pretty "informal" for a POW camp.

Supply wasn't the Nazis' problem in the Deutsch-Sowjetische Krieg. The Nazis had roads and tanks and vehicles, which Napoleon did not.

The Nazis' problem was the sheer number of loyal Russians whom Stalin could muster. Because the Nazis were brutal overlords out East, burdened with an insane racial theory about Slavs.

Turns out that Slavs don't like it when you call them subhuman and murder their families. Who knew.

I don't know that it would, either, but the situations weren't exactly parallel.

Stalin had far more central control than Alexander I, making a strike at the head likely to be more effective.

The boyars of Alexander's time were still more or less laws unto themselves. Under an autocratic czar, yes, but that autocracy wasn't anything like Stalin-level. For one thing, the technology just wasn't there to administer a centralized state of that nature.

Most of the Soviet governmental agencies were already evacuated to Kuybyshev (now Samara), and although Stalin himself remained in Moscow, he could have easily been evacuated, had it been needed.

The Soviets planned to do to Moscow what they did to Kiev - identify the likely locations of military headquarters if the Germans took the city, and placing enormous quantities of hidden explosives in those buildings on time delay. For days after the conquest of Kiev, buildings holding German headquarters kept blowing up.

671 The Nazis played it wrong. Stalin was popular in the sense that he managed to murder anyone who disagreed with him and make other people take the credit for that.

So, you had an insanely top down control system. Also remember the army had just been purged, so there were not a lot of experienced commanders all the way down to the sergeant level. You take out the head of that top down system, and the system has no real way to organize against you. If you do not care about massacring the populace, then it becomes a mop up operation.

Stalin also managed (if you want to use that word) a gigantic ethnic quilt that he used various means to suppress (exile to the east, purge, etc.) If you had exploited that, and also cut the head of the top down admin off, then it becomes a huge mess.

Barbarossa was ineptly carried out, but the supposition of how the Soviet military would be able to react to a gigantic surprise attack was not one of the mistakes made.

They attacked too late in the year. This caused not just a problem with the weather (and the winter of '41/'42 was one of the worst in memory.) It also caused an issue with supply and attire for the army.

They did not use the ethnic grievances against the Soviets to the extent they should have. Also, they got bogged down in their own petty stupid racial idiocies before the job was done.

Plus, there is a lot of widespread stupidity by the Nazis (mostly Hitler) in how they carried the war out. They kept getting their army- which was based on mobility, bogged down in either sieges (Leningrad) or punishing street to street fights of no value beyond propaganda (Stalingrad) or gigantic static fights that did not allow the generals there to do what they did best (Kursk.)

A mostly horse and carriage drawn force, said to depend on "mobility".

The Blitzkrieg was a tiny mechanized force, followed closely by horses and marching troops.

But for the horses, the German troops in the East would have starved quite a bit sooner.

676 Germany did not anticipate going much beyond Moscow. The colonization was to be focused in Ukraine and southern Russia - rich agricultural areas. The Russians to be left everything to the east.

Unlikely fall of Moscow would have, in itself, led to defeat. A lot of industry and many central govt. functions had already been evacuated by December '41 [the latter to Kuibyshev].

Stalin, at the last moment [his special train was waiting at the station] decided to stay [October]. This may have helped stabilize the situation - Zhukov's organization of the defense, the Germans reaching their exhaustion point, and the weather took care of the rest.

"in itself" - but defeat at Moscow might have opened up other possibilities pertinent to the overall outcome - such as Japan deciding to junk the neutrality pact and attack in the east. It was probably considered in summer '42, when the Germans were on their 2nd big romp, to the east/southeast. While they were busy with conquest of the southern resource region after Pearl Harbor, if Moscow fell, it's possible the Kwantung Army in Manchukuo [very strong, not the hollowed out shell it became later] might have been used to nibble off Soviet territory in the Far East.

Soviet forces had been moved from the east to help at Moscow - they played a key role in the successful defense - and the Soviets themselves recognized the grave threat Japanese forces posed to the Trans-Siberian Railroad [a lot of it close to the un- or lightly defended frontier].

So while a stretch, the fall of Moscow changing Japanese behavior, in a way greatly increasing pressure on the Soviets [including loss of the Pacific Lend-Lease pipeline], is plausible.

Can you think of a bigger military what if scenario in history with bigger long range implications? I think this is why it is so fascinating.

Posted by: Aetius451AD at August 18, 2019 02:25 AM (ycWCI)

678 And if you get Moscow, how much more do you need? IIRC, and I could be wrong, Moscow was the heart of the entire Soviet railway network:

https://tinyurl.com/y2zwaf48

What do the soviets do about anything west of Moscow if they lose Moscow?

Posted by: Aetius451AD at August 18, 2019 02:28 AM (ycWCI)

679 Aetius, it certainly is among the biggest/best of the "what ifs", if not THE biggest/best.

And that the Germans had reached their classical exhaustion points, in both '41 and '42, seems not sufficiently recognized. In terms of offensive operations [weather etc all play into it, but that's the point of the classical concept of exhaustion point]. And their enemy was so vast, and so resourceful in ways that mattered ..... the odds were always very long, and negative.

680 And their enemy was so vast, and so resourceful in ways that mattered ..... the odds were always very long, and negative.

Posted by: rhomboid at August 18, 2019 02:33 AM (QDnY+)

Agreed. And borne out by history. However, I think there was no better situation that could have been present. A brittle, completely top down state where everyone was afraid to do anything without it being under orders from Stalin.

It is still a long shot, and I am not sure anyone would do it unless it was a gotta type situation, but I still think it would be doable.

Think about the flip side. If Stalin is getting ready to invade, what is the plan to repel?

Posted by: Aetius451AD at August 18, 2019 02:37 AM (ycWCI)

681 As I said Aetius, to the extent any plans, even notional, about expansion in the east were documented, they didn't involve going beyond Moscow. The slavs were to be left to the east - and up to 3O million of them expelled, force-worked to death, or simply killed, to create elbow room in the conquered agricultural areas, where German warrior/farmers would produce crops and police the frontier.

Losing Moscow complicates Russian logistics, of course. But it probably doesn't change much in the long run, as long as Lend-Lease and Caucasus oil remain the same. The enormous mobilization and the industrial effort did not depend on holding Moscow.

Posted by: rhomboid at August 18, 2019 02:39 AM (QDnY+)

682 Don't think the USSR was that brittle, actually. The chaotic defeats of '41 were due to basics - lack of equipment, lack of training, lack of personnel, lack of leadership capacity in the officer corps. The few decent leaders [Rokossovsky's an example] actually had some impact amidst the general defeat.

I find very plausible the views of veterans who said that Order No. 227 ["not one step back"] was very helpful in stabilizing things in '42, culminating in the Stalingrad debacle - it was aimed at the officers much more than the men. But the men had themselves recognized that endless retreat was simply unacceptable. Fighting literally for your home territory obviously introduces motivation that transcends even the surreal hellish madness of Stalin's USSR.

There was a single, day or two-long breakdown of order in Moscow in October '41. Really the only thing like it Soviet history up to the end times near '91. Portraits and party literature tossed into the streets, open contempt for the state - completely unthinkable things. But it fizzled quickly. When it became known Stalin was staying, and with the Germans at the gates, there was no question of such a thing happening again.

683 Y'all will have to continue to re-fight the eastern front without me - off to see what happened when the final B-29 raid of the war reached its target in northern Honshu, and how the related Tokyo blackout supposedly contributed to the failure of the coup against the Emperor and his surrender decision/address.

WW2 ... Germans take Moscow ... etc ...

If you search YouTube for the Tik" channel:

https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=TIK

you will find several (long) videos on the WW2 Eastern Front, and discussions of several facets of the conflict.

He makes the argument that lack of petroleum essentially forced the German loss, that the Germans needed to win Real Quick or they would lose.

He also points out that the German Army was unsupplyable once units were far enough east (Smolensk-Kharkov, or some-such line; I forget exactly what he says).

The combination of no paved roads and not-even-remotely-enough motor transport (which needed petroleum), and no alternatives (the Soviet rail system was a different gauge, and since much of it had been destroyed anyway, thousands of miles would have to be built), meant that combat operations could not be sustained, no bullets, fuel, etc.

The Soviets did not face the supply problems when they moved west, as they had 500,000 US Lend-Lease trucks.

691 My family heritage is entwined with the oilfields of Western PA.

My Dad used to tell me with pride that the motor oil we sent to the Russians in WW2 was largely unrecognized, major factor in the outcome. The tanks, trucks and planes needed to perform well in horrible conditions and that the American oil industry was able to peovide a superior probuct in quantities enough to share.

Stepping back from all the talk, it is interesting (for me) to note that considering so much of the war was mechanized at that point in time, how something as mundane as motor oil could be a vital consideration.

695 Back in the day, when I was oh 19 or 20, I told my dad "I'm going to Black's Beach." He replied "If you see a gal with three breasts, let me know." At the time there was no staircase to get down to the beach from the Torrey Pines Glider Port. There was a road down but parking in the residential neighborhood above was problematic. At low tide, however it is possible to walk to it from La Jolla Shores to the south.
So I leave bikini clad goddesses at La Jolla Shores and walk north. And when I get there I find the 40-something professor types. I didn't stay long. (SWIDT?) And when I got back to the regular beach with all those sweet sweet beautiful girls, I knew that Black's Beach held no attraction for me.
