A mother with two young children. An adult-sized coffin. Deep winter. A skinny horse. This is a depressing painting.
The dog is the only positive. Dogs can symbolize fidelity. The final duty to the occupier of the coffin by his(?) family? It also looks like they are coming into town. Did this person die suddenly on a trip? Or was his final request to be buried somewhere specific? That the family is fulfilling the request enhances the symbolism of the dog. The dog is the only one seemingly unaffected by the environment or mood. Fidelity is satisfied? This is a good painting to explore. So many questions. Bayer, the maker of Roundup is going to pay $8B (with a B) to settle the bullshit lawsuits. And of course, Bayer isn't paying anything. I watched Geraldo Rivera on Fox this morning talking gun control. Jebus, every other word was incorrect or an outright lie and the rest was distorted to beat hell. For example, did you know you can legally buy machine guns? One bullet per trigger squeeze equals machine guns. Posted by: Muad'dib My Pronouns are Kwisatz Haderach at August 09, 2019 09:53 AM (sjdRT) Geraldo loves his guns. He loves them so much that he admitted on live TV that he was carrying a pistol when he was reporting during the first part of the Iraq War. Never mind that it negated any protections he enjoyed as Press in a war zone, never mind that it meant he could be classified as an unlawful combatant under international law, never mind that it put his fellow journalists in danger of being summarily executed just by wearing press credentials in a war zone. Manson was a white supremacist, big time. The Tate-LaBianca murders were his attempt to start a black-white race war that he believed the blacks would win, killing all whites. Charlie planned to hide-out in Death Valley with his Family during the war, then come out after the war was over and take over. That's because he believed the blacks were too stupid to run things, and since he was a white man, they would welcome him as a capable white overlord. Crazy? Yup.

I remember I didn't want to be embarrassed by my failure in front of someone I'd boasted to, and I kept trying to will my hand to bring the next spoonful up to my mouth. But my hand refused to comply, it just sat there, saying "nuh-uh, I ain't doin' it." There was another guy in our group who eagerly grabbed it and finished it off. But then, we always said about him, if you see a picture of the Brazilian rain forest and there's a face peeking out from behind the leaves, well that was his face. I forgot to mention that I worked with a NASA public affairs guy who interviewed Manson in prison in the late 70s. (Note: the public affairs guy was a UPI reporter based in SanFran back then!)
I asked him about meeting and questioning Manson. He said it was the most chilling experience he'd ever had. Manson was calm and well-spoken, he said, and that made the experience even weirder, knowing Manon's beliefs and murderous ways. The reporter was a hard-bitten old-time reporter who grew up in NYC, so he's not easily weirded-out. Posted by: Gref at August 09, 2019 10:45 AM (AMIL/) 512

Yesterday Rich Zeoli interviewed a reporter who has been writing about the Manson murders since day one, and he says that it was way simpler. He claims that the murders were an attempt to cover up a previous murder committed by one of his "family", with the the thinking, such as it was, that the police would think that there was a crazy killer on the loose and that their incarcerated family member had nothing to do with the murder he was in prison for. Remember, these people weren't geniuses and were taking a lot of drugs.

Sue Gordon embodies the values of a professional intelligence officer. She is as close to universally respected as you can find in the intelligence community. How sad (and typical) that @realDonaldTrump seems to see her as his enemy. The instant Adam Schiff expressed "sorrow" at her leaving, you knew that she had been leaking classified into to him the whole time. but this entire story is almost comical. Trump wanted Ratcliffe on top, he wasn't going to fire anyone else. Deep State and anti-Trump Senators said "nope, we hate Ratcliffe" and killed his nomination, and then said "Sue Gordon is great, she should have the job." And then Trump said "HA ha, you killed my nomination, I just fired your nomination for good! What you gonna do about that? " If they would have gone along with Ratcliffe, he would have let her stay in her relatively powerful position. Posted by: Tom Servo at August 09, 2019 10:47 AM (Kpl3J) 525

Crazy? Yup. Nuclear Thermal Rocket Engines - NTR engines were ground tested by the U.S. in the late 50's and early 60's. They worked quite well. The Marshall Space Flight Center is currently considering them for manned flight to Mars as NTR's would reduce the travel time to 3 - 4 months, cutting the time in half from chemical rockets. The trick is to assemble the engine components in orbit rather than risk an atmospheric destruction of radioactive components from a ground launch.

I've seen concept art for a proposed Soviet nuclear powered zeppelin. No way that could've gone wrong, hey? Posted by: Rodrigo Borgia at August 09, 2019 11:23 AM (tY4MP) 786
all this talk about jet engines and rockets reminds me of Zack Reynold's 'Tobacco King" Galaxie 500 that had the turbonique jet bolted to it. A few years ago while working the Mecom Auction in Houston a wealthy widow from Navasota submitted her deceased husband's jet engine boosted '39 Plymouth.
A guy there to help sell it also helped build it. Said the engine could be run about 20 seconds before things got too crazy. Posted by: DanMan at August 09, 2019 11:23 AM (XTiHL) 787
That painting is heartbreaking.
Posted by: Tonypet --------- I was complaining this morning about the weed growth around here. It's easy to forget that I am, in the big scheme of things, blessed almost beyond measure. Posted by: garrett at August 09, 2019 11:20 AM (QLMP0) That's what I love about these freshmen co-eds, man. Every year I get older and they stay the same age. Posted by: Wooderson at August 09, 2019 11:25 AM (q1Pj5) 790

Just need to find a break action in a rifle caliber that I can fire at the indoor range....which means basically .223 or 7.62x39
------- Indoor? Howabout a Savage Model 24, perhaps in .410/.22 WMR? Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc., etc. at August 09, 2019 11:28 AM (xSo9G) 793

I unfortunately watched a clip of the democrat socialist clambake. The speaker was mentioning a safe room they'd set up, and was alerting people that no "aggressive scents" were allowed inside. These people aren't simply misguided, they're unwell
