After years of litigation, the U.S. Justice Department won a ruling in Austria to secure [Ukrainian oligarch Dmitry] Firtash's extradition to Chicago. But then his legal team secretly filed new evidence that included the [Andrew] Weissmann overture, and Austrian officials suddenly reversed course last week and ordered a new, lengthy delay in extradition.

Liberal nightmare: Takeover of federal judiciary by "larval Scalias is devastatingly close to completion" ...Just this week, the Third Circuit "flipped" to majority Republican-appointees, the Second Circuit is on the brink of flipping, and several other evenly split Circuits are likely to go Republican. By the numbers overall (including Phipps), Trump has nominated and had confirmed: Supreme Court: 2 Courts of Appeals: 43 District/Specialty Courts: 85 ... Charles Pierce at Esquire understands what is happening, and he is fuming. Pierce writes about how The Conservative Effort to Salt the Judiciary With Larval Scalias Is Close to Complete: While everyone was looking elsewhere, and wondering about their immigration status in the lands of their ancestors, the administration* and Mitch McConnell had their white-guys judicial assembly line humming.... The conservative effort to salt the federal judiciary with larval Scalias is devastatingly close to completion. Make no mistake, This would have happened if any of the Republican candidates had been elected in 2016. It may be the only thing keeping a lot of Republicans on the Trump Train. You are going to be hearing from both these guys long after the president* is spinning on a spit in hell. Depend on that. Posted by: artisanal 'ette at July 23, 2019 07:23 AM (vEIlU) 33

Vic, I know you aren't a Communist, but the phrasing of that statement makes it appear that everyone is the property the State and thus produces wealth for the State. Slavery didn't make a "State" wealthy, it produced wealth for the slave's owners. What all of those individual plantation owners did with their wealth is another matter. ON REGULATION, TRUMP EXCEEDS HIS CAMPAIGN PROMISES
Candidate Donald Trump famously promised to get rid of two federal regulations for every new one. With 2 1/2 years in office under his belt, he has vastly exceeded that standard. Paul Bedard reports: ... "We've hit 13 to 1," he told a Heritage Foundation conference on federalism. And cutting so many regulations, he added, has saved taxpayers $33 billion. My guess is that number is low. Departments and agencies including the departments of Labor, Education, Agriculture, and the Environmental Protection Agency have led the war on regulations, according to federal reports. powerlineblog.com Posted by: artisanal 'ette at July 23, 2019 07:26 AM (vEIlU) 38

In the 1820's, Virginia (as a group of business ventures) neared bankruptcy because it had bet on the older forms of slave usage, and failed to take advantage of the cotton boom that kept slavery solvent in other states. So-called free labor was not magic. Economics still ruled what became of ventures, even when the workers were not paid. In the somewhat longer run, Virginia did not gain wealth from slavery, because they weren't making money (or, enough money) from the slaves' labor.

Ol' Yeller was apoplectic at the cash explosion the Turtle passed yesterday, claiming the GOP no longer stands for fiscal sanity. The marginalization of the Tea Party after they helped them gain control of the House in 2010, particularly by that budgeting "expert" Paul Ryan, was the first hint that the expansion of the state overruled all.

I had to explain to my 18 year old that moving from slave to serf to Yeoman is what is before him. I noted that everyone has to do this. A slave is a person that cannot order himself, his finances and his emotions. If this doesn't change he will find a new slave master who will do it for him. A serf is a person who works someone else's capital for the right to keep a portion of the profits. A Yeoman is a person that can order his own life, the lives of others, and has achieved skills and capital to leverage and employ.
The idea that we don't have slavery is simply a stupid, crazy Quaker, nonsense. Today's slaves are useless and a cost burden to serfs and Yeomen who have been dragooned into feeding, clothing, housing and educating them (good luck on that one). This extra burden we put on our young to pretend to have outlawed slavery is one of the reasons our young cannot marry and have children in their 20s. Our system, as currently configured, is about feeding on the young (cuz they're stupid) to feed provide easy profits to aristocrats who protect themselves using the worthless slaves as their foil and weapon. I am so tired of listening to empty virtue signaling regarding slavery. Slavery has been with us throughout the existence of man. Its an economic class, that is being subsidized by those carrying the load. Slavery in a hammock is a really bad bowl Kim Chi. Posted by: Puddin Head at July 23, 2019 07:50 AM (2LelM) 98

>>I would doubt that report, Dershowitz has been fighting to release all the documents?
Nope. Mike Cernovich initialed the lawsuit to have the court docs unsealed. Months (or maybe even a year later?) others joined the lawsuit, including the Miami Herald and Dershowitz. And then as it progressed, Dershowitz claimed he initiated the suit and advocated for fewer document to be unsealed, instead of the whole record. This is according to Cernovich, the guy who initiated all this and whose lawyers are still battling for these records to be unsealed. Like Cernovich or not, this was his project and he is pointing out how Dershowitz is trying to spike it. I don't know what to make of Dersh is doing, because it seems that there are others out to smear him as a rapist - maybe he only wants enough docs to be unsealed to clear his name, but still protect his friends/allies? To tired and sick of my jewish brethren to discuss why they vote and act like they do.
-- I'm not Jewish (and don't ever mean to be disrespectful to those here), but it just seems that so many American Jews are far removed from their religion that the ties to Israel are tentative at best. They just have that label to call themselves, but no real sense of loyalty either to the religion or Israel. I know it's a lot more complicated than that, and I'm just looking at it on the surface. What I don't understand is the completely blind spot non-religious American Jews have for the aggressive anti-Semitism that is engulfing their D party, and the clear, dangerous path it seems to be on as relates to Jews...all over the world, as well as in America. It's frightening stuff, and yet they are blind. It leaves me miffed, that's for sure. Posted by: Lady in Black - Death to the Man Bun at July 23, 2019 08:00 AM (JoUsr) 108

I haven't read it either, but my observation is that there are at least two ways slavery damages an economy (from a purely practical aspect and without regards to the moral damage done). First, it tends to kill the market for low-skilled labor by the unenslaved population, making it difficult for a poor free person to improve their financial and social position. Also, as with most large/vanity purchases, the slave owners frequently seem to have budgeted only for the purchase price and not maintenance (this seems to be an aspect of human nature) causing them to eventually go bankrupt and flood the labor market even more. As practiced in America it was not a stable foundation to build on and it is economically destructive in the countries where it's practiced (in its various forms, whether legal or not) today as well. Reminds me of some work I did in undergrad. The campus racial rabble-rouser wrote a column in the school paper about how Republicans longed for the days of slavery and cheap labor or some such. My response, also published (oddly enough, but the campus was years before wokeness) showed off some research about how slaves were anything BUT cheap labor. A person with slaves is responsible for every damned thing for that slave...housing, food, medical care, and so on. For larger plantations in the pre civil war South the labor force also had to be large enough to account for any churn...slave falls sick or dies, no one performs at 100% indefinitely, etc etc. The economic issues were fairly plain even in the 18th century but they were clouded by cultural ones, as you mention...having a slave or slaves was a cultural signifier which made ignoring the economic disadvantages easier. Large-scale slaveowners tended to be comparatively wealthy so they could afford to ignore it, but again as you mention...a poor free man found his opportunities greatly limited in that environment. To cap off my response I said these are issues that finally came to a head such that the Republican Party could be created to end the practice. Racial rabble-rouser wrote some nonsense reply the following week but I was satisfied that the point was made. Posted by: WitchDoktor, as if anyone gives a shit at July 23, 2019 08:38 AM (TB7HE) 190

There is another option. I've said till I am blue in the face, which actually looks rather fetching on me, to watch Rosenstein's testimony to the House Judiciary Committee on June 28, 2018. Specifically, his response to Rep Matt Gaetz about the FISA renewal application. Rosenstein was not the affiant. That was someone in the FBI. And Rosenstein made it very clear that he knew his actions were being reviewed by Horowitz whose investigation was already underway at the time and he was quite comfortable that he did the right thing and apparently Horowitz agreed. NYC is an excellent example of how the ultimate blame for the actions of an areas police are ultimately the responsibility of the residents.
We can argue all day over whether or not cops are good or bad or somewhere in between, overpaid donut eaters or underpaid heroes, but the overall behavior is a direct result of the people who elect the politicians who have control over the police. The same police force who cleaned up NYC and made it safe under Rudy is the same police force that allows punks to pour buckets of water on officers who are just doing their jobs. How they respond to incidents is a reflection of the political leadership. NYC residents voted for this and then voted to keep it. They are the ones to blame for what is happening in NYC. Posted by: RedMindBlueState at July 23, 2019 09:20 AM (ejd/p) Another easy way to not pay 21% interest - load yourself up on debt (but don't spend it all, keep a lot of cash!) then move to Texas. Texas doesn't allow wage garnishment except for things like child support, and doesn't allow personal items up to about $70,000 to be seized. So, default just means you won't be able to get any more credit cards, after that you just gotta live on a cash pay as you go basis. The old story is that the men who wrote the 1876 Texas Constitution (the current one) all owed a lot of money to Eastern Bankers and didn't want to pay. So they made it easy not to. Now it's easy to get a judgement against someone in Texas. It's just damned hard, if not impossible, to collect an unsecured debt. Posted by: Tom Servo at July 23, 2019 09:27 AM (V2Yro) 352

Job's principle point is to dispute or at least qualify the theology of the historical books of the Old Testament, in which Israel and Judah get what they deserve because of their sin. That viewpoint is articulated by Job's neighbors, who are positive that Job brought this on himself. In short, the point of the book is that we often don't know why bad things happen.

Posted by: Insomniac at July 23, 2019 09:20 AM (NWiLs) As we've said here many times, most bible scholars believe Job is by far the oldest book in the bible, and may predate Abraham by several hundred years. probably having been written in Mesopotamia, maybe ancient Sumer. it is *not* a very Jewish or Christian book. So why has it been kept around? Because for 4,500 years now (it's probable age) nothing has dealt with the issue of Unjust Suffering more honestly and directly than the book of Job deals with it. It says: You are likely to suffer, through no fault of your own. That is the nature of this world. You want to know why, that is a human yearning. You will never be told why, because you didn't create this universe, and because what you want is not really very important in the overall scheme of things. Now one of his friends, understanding that, advised "Curse God and Die." But Job, hearing that, refused, and instead said "but I know my Redeemer Lives" and he accepted his suffering. It's not a very modern or American view. But it's more realistic than anything we have to offer. Posted by: Tom Servo at July 23, 2019 09:35 AM (V2Yro) 381

Posted by: Insomniac at July 23, 2019 09:31 AM (NWiLs) The why is addressed in other books. Something along the lines of the universal salvation of mankind. This will be unpopular here, no doubt, but I don't think Job should be read literally. God and Satan did not make a bet (which makes no sense for an omniscient being to do in the first place). That framing is a literary conceit so that the reader doesn't spend time fighting the hypothetical - i.e., doing what Job's neighbors do, insist that Job must have done something we don't know about to bring about his troubles.

The why is addressed in other books. Something along the lines of the universal salvation of mankind.
But the precise lesson one is supposed to take from Job is that we are not entitled to an understanding and explanation of everything that's going on(but are rather to simply trust in God). Ecclesiastes is a good pre New Testament viewpoint. Posted by: Someguy at July 23, 2019 09:36 AM (W3Hl2) I don't think the salvation can possibly be universal, some have truly chosen to serve darkness and wallow in their sins. So you refuse to learn how things actually work. You can't argue with what I have to say - because you are wrong, so you use ridicule. The problem is that ridicule is meant to be used on people saying ridiculous things, not people who are pointing out that you are saying ridiculous things. That was his wife. Women!! . I thought your discussion of the Book of Job was a good one. Thanks. Posted by: FenelonSpoke at July 23, 2019 09:48 AM (+0VWg) 393

-------- S'ok by me. As an aside, as Hitler was being confronted by bad news from his sundry Generals, there was the intimation that the situation was the result of bad choices that he had made. At one point, Hitler said, "I weary of these Comforters of Job". I find that rather amusing. Posted by: Mike Hammer, etc.,etc. at July 23, 2019 09:52 AM (CDGwz) 396
Worthy of note? People who think that philosophy departments should be burned to the ground will jack off all day over the variant meanings of the book of Job.

Let's just say you are not what I'd consider a knowledgeable source and I didn't ask for your opinion. You have zero knowledge of my education or background. Let's also say that you are sounding like a jerk. As I said: GFY. Posted by: WitchDoktor, as if anyone gives a shit at July 23, 2019 10:00 AM (TB7HE) 399
A summary of the links leads me to a complete and unambiguous conclusion: If you haven't closed on a bugout location by the time Trump is replaced, and haven't learned to properly prep, then you will be dead ten years after Trump leaves. And if you haven't taught your children the same, you are a fucking child abuser. It's that simple.

If the knowledge I am trying to pass on weren't absolutely critical I wouldn't bother the rest of you with it. Unfortunately this is a case where the truth is counter to the common sense which people build up regarding money. That common sense is exactly right when it comes to personal finances, business finances, local government, and state government. It is 100% wrong at the federal level. As long as you fail to understand that fact the Progressives will be able to run the country into the ground by convincing you that the Feds need to borrow money to finance federal spending. Federal finances is a very counter intuitive subject which is difficult to understand. I am not the first person to attempt this. Heinlein tried to cover it in a chapter in his book Time Enough for Love. If I am coming off like a jerk it is because I am angry and frustrated that I can't get intelligent people to understand what is actually happening. I'm responding to your comment about physicians not making money on well people. I had a similar thought a few years ago. On the corner of my street a group built an urgent care facility. I wondered about what kind of thinking is behind opening a business and hoping nobody has to use it. Posted by: Chillin the most at July 23, 2019 10:38 AM (lonOK) 403
"And what's up with the staying power of the lunatics who think that the moon landing was staged?"
Probably the same syndrome that affects the Anti-Vaxxers. It's the "Holier-Than-Thou" thing, combined with elitism. They know a Truth, to which others are blind to or have been hoodwinked. That makes them better than the masses out there, in their minds. Doesn't matter if it's been debunked, time after time. Any attack on the idea is treated as a test of their faith, and only serves to prove their belief even more true in their mind. Similarly, anything that might hint to its validity becomes a new gospel. Even the atheists need their religion. Posted by: Another Anon at July 23, 2019 10:46 AM (6NP2p) 404
