The Morning Report: 10% Of What Sefton Does Edition (7/23/2019)

Not quite the breaking news that you have come to expect with Sefton Inc., but here are some links that are topical and interesting.

We start off with a typical, deeply dishonest piece from The Daily Beast, or rather the Breitbart fisking of it, because I'm not going to subject you to their drek. They savaged Mariano Rivera, a genuinely good person who happens to be pro-Israel and conservative, so of course he should be destroyed! Then some behind-the-scenes stuff about the current mess at the NRA. I am getting more and more disgusted, and might just give all of my gun-advocacy money to GOA. And what's up with the staying power of the lunatics who think that the moon landing was staged?

Then onto a brutally honest and very, very un-PC analysis of where population trends in Africa are taking us. And from a blog I haven't read in awhile, a short economics lesson on why slavery was a dumb idea. Speaking of slave behavior, the next article points out that Democrats in NYC will vote for anyone who claims the mantle of poverty and minority status...even if she is a rich girl with a trust fund!

Then some depressing but unsurprising news about the State Department and its deeply embedded (like a tick) deep state scum. And what day isn't complete without a discussion of dudes who weren't good enough athletes to beat other men, so they pretend to be chicks, and VICTORY! And speaking of scams, here is Barbara Ehrenreich and her scathing criticism of the "Wellness Industry." It's interesting, but there is an undertone in her that smacks of lunatic. For a bit of a change, a short exegesis on Job:37!

On to an interesting explanation of why many American Jews are ambivalent (at best) about Israel, then an Israeli security analyst's unconventional take on Iran. I think he's partially correct, but I wouldn't bet the house on Iran being a sane actor.

We finish up with an interesting counterpoint to the drumbeat from the usual suspects that most people in American prisons don't really belong there, and a cool list and short description (with pictures!) of the IDF's top 10 innovations.

Nope.
Mike Cernovich initialed the lawsuit to have the court docs unsealed. Months (or maybe even a year later?) others joined the lawsuit, including the Miami Herald and Dershowitz.

And then as it progressed, Dershowitz claimed he initiated the suit and advocated for fewer document to be unsealed, instead of the whole record.

This is according to Cernovich, the guy who initiated all this and whose lawyers are still battling for these records to be unsealed. Like Cernovich or not, this was his project and he is pointing out how Dershowitz is trying to spike it.

I don't know what to make of Dersh is doing, because it seems that there are others out to smear him as a rapist - maybe he only wants enough docs to be unsealed to clear his name, but still protect his friends/allies?

I haven't read it either, but my observation is that there are at least two ways slavery damages an economy (from a purely practical aspect and without regards to the moral damage done).

First, it tends to kill the market for low-skilled labor by the unenslaved population, making it difficult for a poor free person to improve their financial and social position.

Also, as with most large/vanity purchases, the slave owners frequently seem to have budgeted only for the purchase price and not maintenance (this seems to be an aspect of human nature) causing them to eventually go bankrupt and flood the labor market even more. As practiced in America it was not a stable foundation to build on and it is economically destructive in the countries where it's practiced (in its various forms, whether legal or not) today as well.

Reminds me of some work I did in undergrad. The campus racial rabble-rouser wrote a column in the school paper about how Republicans longed for the days of slavery and cheap labor or some such.

My response, also published (oddly enough, but the campus was years before wokeness) showed off some research about how slaves were anything BUT cheap labor. A person with slaves is responsible for every damned thing for that slave...housing, food, medical care, and so on. For larger plantations in the pre civil war South the labor force also had to be large enough to account for any churn...slave falls sick or dies, no one performs at 100% indefinitely, etc etc.

The economic issues were fairly plain even in the 18th century but they were clouded by cultural ones, as you mention...having a slave or slaves was a cultural signifier which made ignoring the economic disadvantages easier. Large-scale slaveowners tended to be comparatively wealthy so they could afford to ignore it, but again as you mention...a poor free man found his opportunities greatly limited in that environment.

To cap off my response I said these are issues that finally came to a head such that the Republican Party could be created to end the practice.

Racial rabble-rouser wrote some nonsense reply the following week but I was satisfied that the point was made.

I took JackStraw at his word early on that Rod Rosenstein was riding herd on Mueller as far as making sure DJT didn't get torpedoed by any of those jizzmops. That wasn't an overwhelmingly popular attitude here, at all, but it got confirmed for me when that dickweed McCabe floated that preposterous story, backed up by no witnesses, about RR wearing a wire. And of course Mueller's report being a grudgingly and sneakily stated finding of no wrongdoing.

I think it's healthy to be skeptical of all federal apparatchiks who rise through the deep state ranks, but sometimes you can find someone trying to do the right thing when possible even when immersed in shit.

I got the latest NRA fund raising letter and returned it with a note saying that until lapierre is removed I will not give them another dime and to take me off of all fundraising lists.

As I am a Patriot Life member and a very regular donor they just dried u a regular money source with all of this B$. If enough of us tell them why we are not renewing our membership or no longer donating, they might actually listen.

In the meantime I wonder what really is going on. The media is not exploiting this story like they usually do and that bothers me. This should be front page news 24/7 because the NRA is "evil" and they should be pouncing on it. In the back of my mind I fear that the left has it's hands in this entire mess somehow.

Credit card debt is unsecured debt. The interest rate has to be high for the lenders to be able to offset the huge number of people who default on their payments. Don't want to pay 21% interest, pay your credit card bill in full at the end of the month. Is that possible for everyone? No. But a high interest rate isn't evidence wrongdoing here.

Another easy way to not pay 21% interest - load yourself up on debt (but don't spend it all, keep a lot of cash!) then move to Texas. Texas doesn't allow wage garnishment except for things like child support, and doesn't allow personal items up to about $70,000 to be seized. So, default just means you won't be able to get any more credit cards, after that you just gotta live on a cash pay as you go basis.

The old story is that the men who wrote the 1876 Texas Constitution (the current one) all owed a lot of money to Eastern Bankers and didn't want to pay. So they made it easy not to.

Now it's easy to get a judgement against someone in Texas. It's just damned hard, if not impossible, to collect an unsecured debt.

On the flip side, the Dems DESPERATELY want to get hold of the money in people's retirement accounts, like 401K and 401B. So my guess is that any money market would be government-approved and government-mandated.

I started splitting money into Roth, 401B, and HSA accounts when I realized that my pension may end up being "adjusted" as more new employees choose mutual funds over the pay-more-upfront traditional pension plan. Now I wonder if my plans will fall apart if/when a "planned economy" bums get power.

Credit card debt is unsecured debt. The interest rate has to be high for the lenders to be able to offset the huge number of people who default on their payments. Don't want to pay 21% interest, pay your credit card bill in full at the end of the month. Is that possible for everyone? No. But a high interest rate isn't evidence wrongdoing here.

As we've said here many times, most bible scholars believe Job is by far the oldest book in the bible, and may predate Abraham by several hundred years. probably having been written in Mesopotamia, maybe ancient Sumer. it is *not* a very Jewish or Christian book.

So why has it been kept around? Because for 4,500 years now (it's probable age) nothing has dealt with the issue of Unjust Suffering more honestly and directly than the book of Job deals with it. It says: You are likely to suffer, through no fault of your own. That is the nature of this world. You want to know why, that is a human yearning. You will never be told why, because you didn't create this universe, and because what you want is not really very important in the overall scheme of things.

Now one of his friends, understanding that, advised "Curse God and Die." But Job, hearing that, refused, and instead said "but I know my Redeemer Lives" and he accepted his suffering.

It's not a very modern or American view. But it's more realistic than anything we have to offer.

The why is addressed in other books. Something along the lines of the universal salvation of mankind.

But the precise lesson one is supposed to take from Job is that we are not entitled to an understanding and explanation of everything that's going on(but are rather to simply trust in God).

Ecclesiastes is a good pre New Testament viewpoint.

I think the only protection will be gold in overseas accounts, in places that specialize in banking secrecy.

Everything else will be raided, but many of the "Revolutionary Vanguard" are obscenely wealthy, have their own money in such places, and won't dare upset the status quo there.

That framing is a literary conceit so that the reader doesn't spend time fighting the hypothetical - i.e., doing what Job's neighbors do, insist that Job must have done something we don't know about to bring about his troubles.

If the knowledge I am trying to pass on weren't absolutely critical I wouldn't bother the rest of you with it. Unfortunately this is a case where the truth is counter to the common sense which people build up regarding money. That common sense is exactly right when it comes to personal finances, business finances, local government, and state government. It is 100% wrong at the federal level. As long as you fail to understand that fact the Progressives will be able to run the country into the ground by convincing you that the Feds need to borrow money to finance federal spending.
Federal finances is a very counter intuitive subject which is difficult to understand. I am not the first person to attempt this. Heinlein tried to cover it in a chapter in his book Time Enough for Love.

If I am coming off like a jerk it is because I am angry and frustrated that I can't get intelligent people to understand what is actually happening.
