41 After the Scopes trial was over, John Scopes became disgusted with teaching and became a geologist, and went to go make his fortune in the East Texas Oil Field in the 1930's. in the 1950's he was a senior executive with United Gas in Shreveport, which is where my father in law got to know him when he was a young man just starting in the business.
He loved to tell about Mr. Scopes was extremely intelligent, but also had a very fiery and explosive temper, and he had long since grown so sick of people asking him about the trial that he would erupt into a fierce tirade if anyone was foolish enough to bring it up in his presence, enough to make grown men wilt.
So my f-i-l loved to relate how their favorite trick with new hires was to take them aside on their first or second day, and tell them "hey do you know that Mr. Scopes up there on the second floor was the one in that famous Scopes monkey trial? He LOVES to talk about it, he will think the world of you if you will go into his office and ask him about it!" And they would send the hapless newbie into the lions den while they all hid outside in the hall, listening and waiting for the explosion to go off.

It's been said that the "Boresight" mode on a USAF AWACS radar, would be lethal to anyone on board any aircraft caught in it's beam, out to a range of about two miles or such.

At two miles, the AWACS operator may have to hold them in "lock" for thirty or forty seconds.

Quarter mile? Much shorter time.

Inverse square law is a bitch, up close.

I am really, really picky about live albums. But Grand Funk Caught in the Act is brilliant.

KISS Alive (the first one, the rest are shite)

and Thin Lizzy Live and Dangerous.

Live albums are rare now. But most of the metal bands I've seen live over the years are tight and spot on. It often comes down to the vocalist. Death Angel, Testament, Slayer, Megadeth, Helloween, Flotsam and Jetsam, etc.

What it boils down to is how a band sounds live in real time vs carefully guided studio time.

Metal bands are very tight, in my opinion.

99 It's been said that the "Boresight" mode on a USAF AWACS radar, would be lethal to anyone on board any aircraft caught in it's beam, out to a range of about two miles or such.

At two miles, the AWACS operator may have to hold them in "lock" for thirty or forty seconds.

Quarter mile? Much shorter time.

Inverse square law is a bitch, up close.

How much you wanna bet it's a mis-translation of one kind or another?

Do I think it'd have the range or capability of any American AWACS? Or even the Euro one atop their Airbus contraption?

Hardly.

But it's likely about as good as whatever Clinton sold to 'em back in the '80s.

So, rather than underrate and laugh at it.

What's say we just do plausible deniability, and F-22 it from maximum range?

The '22 doesn't have to emit, it just hands the missile off with the up-to-the-second update from the Satellite Downlink, and the missile goes a huntin' until it calculates "proximity".

The it's internal radar goes active, at which time the Chinese have time *maybe* to drop their chopsticks.

189 Just read the entire Ted Kennedy's car drove itself off a bridge thread, and nobody discussed the truly outrageous part of the story, so I will here: Consider Kennedy's crimes DUI, (OK couldn't prove that one because...) Hit and run involving a fatality, and failure to stop and render aid. In Texas that would buy you 15 years hard time in state prison, and a felony conviction.

For Kennedy in the Peoples Paradise of Massholia: Judge Boyle sentenced him to two months suspended.- no fine, no suspended driver's license (which I understand he didn't even have anyway) - zilch, nada, zip beeb, skip out of jail free as a bird, for leaving a terrified girl to slowly suffocate to death, desperately hoping for help that never came, while she clawed at the windows of the Oldsmobile with her fingernails.

What Ted Kennedy did was despicable, there is no word in the English language appropriate to describe the actions of that Masshole judge

192 Jewell, also...maybe not a great selling point for those "with a daughter" (I have one myself), but I figured since they were from Mass they'd be super-woke, but was a funny bit where Sully (lead singer) urged guys to put girls up on their shoulders for the next song since there "was a better chance of the boobies coming out"...but then went onto the "not a fan of the hashtag-me-too-movement" riff, then segued into the "when I was growing up the HASHTAG was known as the POUND sign....<segue> POUNDMETOO".
Super funny and..for the record, didn't see any boobies (sad face).

Back to piss troughs: In my hazy memory, I remember a stadium/venue
having piss fountains. Circular piss troughs with the 'flushing' water
coming out of the top, like one of those 'chocolate fountains'. Can't
remember where that was, though.

We had those too. Those weren't drinking fountains?

Not the Left, necessarily - the former wife of Joe Kennedy II was furious after the Archdiocese of Boston granted him an annulment, concluding that he wasn't mature enough to understand the sacrament of marriage (this, after they had had two kids).

She wrote a book demonstrating that basically, you could always get an annulment from the Archdiocese of Boston if you were rich and powerful enough.

After ten years, the Vatican undid the annulment.

Bonasera: I believe in America. America has made my fortune. And I raised my daughter in the American fashion. I gave her freedom but I taught her never to dishonor her family. She found a "boy friend," not an Italian. She went to the movies with him. She stayed out late. I didn't protest. Two months ago he took her for a drive, with another boy friend. They made her drink whiskey and then they tried to take advantage of her. She resisted. She kept her honor. So they beat her. Like an animal. When I went to the hospital her nose was broken. Her jaw was shattered, held together by wire. She couldn't even weep because of the pain. But I wept. Why did I weep? She was the light of my life. A beautiful girl. Now she will never be beautiful again.

[He breaks down at this point, and the Don gestures to his son to get him a drink]

Bonasera: Sorry...

[He regains his composure and carries on]

Bonasera: I went to the police, like a good American. These two boys were brought to trial. The judge sentenced them to three years in prison, and suspended the sentence. Suspended sentence! They went free that very day! I stood in the courtroom like a fool, and those two bastards, they smiled at me. Then I said to my wife, "For justice, we must go to Don Corleone."

413 Yeah, the Scopes Trial is not at all as advertised. The biggest point I would make is that it was more about social Darwinism and eugenics than evolution. Generally, evolution and social Darwinism were seen as two sides of the same coin: you accepted both or neither. The biology textbook that was required by the state was Civic Biology by George William Hunter. It was more about animal husbandry and the like (I haven't read most of it) but it did address evolution and specifically taught social Darwinism, eugenics, and white supremacy as a part of it. So people were objecting to having these things taught to their children, and being taught as science. The way I put it to my class is "So the ignorant, racist, Southern hicks were actually taking a stand against racism and white supremacy."

I studied printing at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo. In our building (Graphic Arts) there was a bathroom with (IIRC) two circular piss troughs.

That building also housed the campus radio station, KCPR. Years before I was there, there was a student DJ named Albert Yankovic.

One night, Albert recorded a song in that bathroom with circular piss troughs.

That song was called "My Bologna".

And now you know... The Rest of the Story.

Never bought anything from Chewy, but apparently someone did, using our credit card number. About $80 bucks worth. Called Chewy. Within 5 minutes the charge was reversed and the customer service dude on the other end of the line reported the fraudulent purchase. So I can vouch for their excellent customer service, even having never been a customer.

Here's some more of the new Berkeley language code:

That means 'manpower' will become 'human effort' or 'workforce.'

'She,' 'her,' 'he,' and 'him' will be replaced by 'they' and 'them,' according to the measure approved Tuesday by the City Council.

Furthermore, in an ordinance read out on the day, 'firemen' is set to become 'firefighters.'

Terms like fraternity or sorority will be changed to 'collegiate Greek system residence.'

Also, other terms that will be changed include pregnant woman or women. It will be switched to pregnant employees as well as brothers and sisters being switched to sibling.

Still, we managed to get an entire Trust aqnd Powers of Attorney(s) lawyered, written, recorded and put into effect before she passed this January at age 90.
