A Conversation With a Cabbie and What It Tells Us About The Next Several Minutes of My Life

Special Guest Columnist for Ace of Spades HQ I was talking to my cabbie in Cairo, making idle chit-chat as we threaded our way through a colorful and boisterous bazaar, what the locals call a souk, when I pointed out how the world is becoming more interconnected every second. Then, he stabbed me. As the blade slipped between my ribs, it occurred to me the rubber of the knife's handle was made in Brazil, and the steel crafted in Japan. Much like the gaudy wares on display at the souk outside the red-flecked windows, my backseat butchering was a glorious melange of the intersection of ideas at the great crossroads of the world. As my cabbie continued to stab at my torso, I pondered that this moment was made possible by what I call "the pollenization of possibility." Consider: It required the melding of three cultures, Brazilian, Japanese, and Egyptian, to produce the perforation in my Minnesota-made kidney. It was as if the grand viziers of thought and the great moguls of trade had conspired for years to come together into the red-tipped point of my itinerant assassin's dagger. You can see this everywhere in the world, in "American" cars with parts made in Japan and largely assembled in Mexico, or in the latest "killer" app, conceived in Silicon Valley but coded in Seoul. The pace of cross-pollenization and adaptation is unstoppable and ever-increasing, much like the crazed murder-tempo of my assailant's unexpected blood-frenzy. I hold up my hands in defense, like those "left behind" in the New Economy, trying to protect themselves from the incoming sharp edge of disruptive change. Though, in my case, I was actually trying to protect myself from the incoming the sharp edge of stabbing. But, just as ideas from far-away cultures penetrate our society, the blade cuts into me like a viral meme, or perhaps a catchy Bollywood song. But one of those songs that plunges deeply into the meat of your palm and severs the nerves to your fingers. I cry out to passers-by for help, but just like those left behind by globalization, they are heedless of the changes happening all around them. Finally, I catch their attention. Then they begin stabbing me too. As the crowd gathers around me with knives and antiquated farm implements, some scratch-made, some from the nuevas factorias of Veracruz, it strikes to me that I am witnessing what I call the "sudden inevitable." In my book The Sudden Inevitable, I trace how events that overtake us have percolated in the collective unconscious for decades, even centuries. This guy just cut off my foot with a shovel. Ideas are pregnant in the ether before any human speaks them aloud, much like the idea of stabbing me to death has long percolated (I suspect) in the collective mind of my closest confreres. And thus, as I lie wet and wriggling upon the ground, this conclave of multicultural avatars pulling off my pants and leaving me naked below the waist for God knows what reason, I think about the quickening pulse of international concourse, and how it matches my own quickening pulse, as my heartbeat becomes fast, weak, and thready due to rapid exsanguination. Something of the world has been lost, and it will not be returning any time soon. Rather like my foot, which I see now has been placed upon a table in the souk and is now being offered for sale at the price of one pound, sixty piastres. I'm rather proud that the foot of a simple man from the farms of Minnesota should command such a lofty price in this place, this chattering beehive of a bazaar where the locals come to haggle over bolts of cotton and baskets of taro, and where Westerners come to be butchered and stripped down for their organs. And their foot. I cannot speak any longer. My microrecorder (made in the Netherlands) is almost full. Oh bugger, they just took that too

I don't think this is a physical reference. I think "the Chin" refers to kingdom that united China and immediately set to building the Great Wall to separate China from everything int he world.. People who say things like that have never been in a position of responsibility, I suspect. Someone who indulges in lèse-majesté has to pay a price, if possible, and to be seen to have paid a price, regardless of the offender's status.
Why? Because it's not always possible to make miscreants pay, so when you can, you have to come down on them like a ton of bricks to discourage others from trying it. They just don't know what you may be able to do, but they know that if you can, they're toast.

It's an old but still useful tool when defending oneself on the sea.
The UK is very depleted navy wise. very few actual capital ships (if any technically) but they have sufficient to deal with Irans meager flotilla of inflatables and fast boats.
Even arming the tankers would be useful but I guess there's some legalities to overcome.

Everyone outside of flyover territory was just fine with actually hostile behavior towards The Other for, literally, decades. And The Other were expected to take it and were cowed into taking it because culture dripped it like Chinese water torture. Every day, every moment, every angle designed to belittle Middle America. The powers that be were just giddy with delight that there was no return fire. Not in any tangible sense.
Then the Tea Party came alive and an alarm went off. Suddenly the nation turned "divisive". No, it was divisive already, just tired of being run over roughshod.
And now Trump is the tip of the spear. "Dignity"? Never existed. Not in generations anyway. Iran has a national version of small man's disease or something. Makes me think of the video where the guy who's about 5 feet tall is in a coffee shop, yelling and ranting at everyone for someone daring to ask how tall he is, and he just can't take it any more.
So one guy says "calm down, man" and short man goes up to him, face about hitting his stomach, and starts yelling about going outside and kicking ass. The treaty started as an anti-piracy measure.
Armed merchantmen can pretty quickly prey on unarmed ones, so it was outlawed a while ago.
The anti-piracy patrols worked off Somalia, but now you have a state actor (Iran) getting into the act. They're clearly trying to start something, but don't want to be so overt as to stage a direct attack on a US warship.
I think Kerry is advising them on this. They want to be able to blame Trump. If the Iranians fire on one of our ships, that goes away.
Seizing allied warships is getting pretty close, though.

They were a joy. And the Times was smart enough to space them out so that they didn't overlap. I think each got two weekdays and Safire got "On Language" in the Sunday magazine. That was a treasure.
And pre-internet, who knows what was going on. Reading the Times every day made me feel smart and informed. I remember a headline, "War Torn East Timor Struggles Back From the Abyss".

Fair enough. I would presume that a sub at periscope would be readily visible from the air, particularly given bright sunshine.
I used to bodysurf here in SoCal and almost had a heart attack a couple of times on seeing dark shadows swimming underneath me, only to go limp with relief when a seal would surface nearby.
Of course, the great white sharks around here EAT seals, so after a minute the relief turned back into alarm.

Yes, I was playing his 4th of July speech and just as I was thinking that I would suggest to friends to have their homeschooled kids listen to it for all the great historical info, Trump said "bastards".
I was glad my own kids weren't in the room at the time...oh well. In that context he could have used the word "devils" and it would have served as well.
I don't care what he tweets or says in press conferences, but major event speeches like that would be better if they were young kid-friendly.

Ultra-poisonous coral snakes have the same coloring as ultra-poisonous sea snakes, and many animals, including sharks, instinctively know to stay clear of these snakes.
Jack Coostow(American spelling) dreamed up an experiment. He painted/dyed some wetsuits the same colors as coral and sea snakes, had some of his guys put them on and swim into shark infested water.
The sharks avoided them.
If it's true about all this, why not paint surf boards like this?

One of the big paper companies(Weyerhaeuser I think)had acres and acres of land close to where my parents lived in SC. All nicely planted with baby trees next to mama trees next to papa trees. Harvest the papa trees, plant some more babies, etc., etc, over and over.

25 years ago it was cute that a seal colony was established south of Cape Cod on Monomoy Island. Oh aren't they pretty. A cottage industry arose of seal watching trips.
There was another colony in Nauset Harbor, but people didn't know about that.
So what do you get with cute seals and marine mammal protection acts? (John McPhee used the phrase "charismatic megafauna", but he's just a glib New Yorker writer who doesn't really understand the seal thing. Also, I used to hit on his daughter before I understood what class distinctions are).
What you get is a shitton of seals. Smelly noisy eat all of the surf fish like my striped bass seals. Two colonies of maybe 300 animals each are now greater than 30,000 fucking charismatic vermin covering all of outer Cape Cod.
The white sharks have shown up for the easy pickings. But they're few enough that they all get named and tagged.
We need more sharks, orcas, and Canadians to rid us of this menace.
