The Morning Rant: Minimalist Edition

punk-monkey.jpg

It's not the size of the Royal Navy, it's the size of Britain's balls that's the problem.

Is the Royal Navy too small to deal with Iranian threat?

Tobias Ellwood told The Times: “The threats we’re facing are changing in front of us, the world is getting more complex. If we are wanting to continue to play this influential role on the international stage it will require further funding for our armed forces, not least the Royal Navy. Our Royal Navy is too small to manage our interests across the globe.”
The issue isn't the size and reach of the Royal Navy; it has been shrinking for years. The issue is that the United Kingdom has been emasculated by its elites, who would rather kowtow to the maniacal SJWs and cultivate voting blocs within immigrant populations than defend the culture and history of their country. The result is a country without a core; one that is unwilling to defend itself even in response to a direct and obvious provocation from a country that is reeling from sanctions and is lashing out at the world. The UK could easily mount a small military operation that would send a clear signal to the Mad Mullahs that pirating British ships is not a winning plan. A few cruise missiles (they still have them) into Iran's oil infrastructure, or even into their military command and control would be sufficient.

Yes, this sounds suspiciously like the now thoroughly discredited neo-cons of 20 years ago, but sometimes it is appropriate to meet provocation with force. Nobody has bloodied the Iranians' nose (except Israel) in many years. It is time to remind them of their position in the world.

******

My English isn't as good as sooper-genius-Joo-hater extraordinaire Tlaib, but this sounds suspiciously like "if they're not happy here, they can leave." Only worse.

The US doesn't want war, the UK/NATO depend on US and don't fund their own protection. So action against the UK has them looking to US to save them, while their FiveEyes participated is sabotage of Trump.

but I don't know what grand strategy is in play ... Iran leadership probably getting more desperate, hijacking one ship was (supposedly) payback for the (legal?) action by the Brits in taking that other tanker. But then too, the US is down one $200M drone.

North Korea launched two short-range missiles off the country's east coast early Thursday, South Korean officials said, as Pyongyang ratchets up pressure on Washington amid stalled nuclear talks.

The missiles were fired between 5:34 a.m. and 5:57 a.m. local time from an area near the city of Wonsan, South Korea's military said. One traveled about 270 miles, while the other flew about 430 miles. They both soared to an altitude of roughly 30 miles before landing in the sea between South Korea and Japan.

Funny you should say that.

In this month's BBC Music magazine, the cover story is the "Proms," the series of classical concerts that ends up in the famous "Last Night of the Proms" at the Royal Albert Hall, where the festivities are concluded with lusty singalongs of Rule, Britannia and Land of Hope and Glory.

Three conductors who will be participating were asked if RB should still be sung, as it isn't "inclusive," and to a man jack, each one said to drop it.

Sure, we'll sing about not being slaves and a land of hope and glory and building Jerusalem, but that's all we'll fucking do.

208 It's a myth to believe that part of the problem isn't that the British Navy is too small. While indeed the main issue is a civilian leadership who has grossly underfunded their armed forces and taken postures which, demonstrably have invited aggressors to test their boundaries, the Service Chiefs have noted for some time the British military is "no longer fit for purpose". Ergo, the services are way overstretched and these types of incidents are further proof. The ICRG have enough resources to know exactly where the British Navy is, and more importantly, is not. They know precisely how long it will take their vessels to respond, when they will use over the horizon capabilities and when warnings have real teeth.

It's a culmination of these factors that led to this latest series of incidents, which by the way British civilian leadership has responded to weakly and within the IRGC predictions.

Posted by: Blue Bird of F'ing Joy at July 25, 2019 11:44 AM (lD3vL)

211 The RN has a total of six destroyers. That's everything. Given refits, and such, she might - maybe - be able to sortie four of them. She has one helicopter carrier, which may or may not be in refit right now, and there is no backup to that. She has 16 frigates, total. if she can sortie 12 it would be impressive. Six SSN's, and voila - that's the whole RN.

Are they aggressive? No. Lots of reasons for that, but one of them is always "can you afford to lose an asset?"

When you only have a total of 22 surface warfare assets, the loss of even one of them is 4% of the fleet.

To get those to Iran would mean "nothing left around the home waters," too.

So you'd better believe that the RN is way too small to engage Iran in an area where land-based aircraft, SSM's, etc. would all have an easy time getting at your assets.

Bill Halsey couldn't do it, if that was his order of battle.

Have you ever been in the Military? The one thing the Military is really good at is destroying a known target; give them a target and it is gone.

It is not necessary to put a single boot on the ground. Destroy their electrical generating capacity and they are suddenly an 1830's military, they can't fly planes or launch missiles or refine Uranium, or even broadcast propaganda. War is over. Over fly and watch for any electrical signals and destroy them to keep them in the 1830's. Low cost maintenance.

242 Marcus and Rob with good concise descriptions of the RN's tragic situation. Just add in lack of political will - probably super-charged by the change mass immigration has wrought on the very domestic basis of politics WRT such issues, and voila, no UK credibility in these situations.

America isn't good at sanctions? Current Iran example is a nearly completely unheralded, and in some ways astonishing, success thereof. Iran's a very hard target for sanctions pressure. And sanctions against any but small/isolated targets are mostly for organizing your own coalition, they rarely compel changes in behavior.

247 The difference between our view and the NeoCon view of force, I think, differs not in our assessment of its necessity, but its best use.

The NeoCon thinks favors invasion, occupation, and nation-building as a way to permanently change our enemies into something else. In my eyes, our only real success was an aberration, Japan was already highly Westernized and more in need of correction than overhaul. It won't happen again.

We favor short, sharp, decisive actions that don't require years of commitment, and trust that the demonstration of vastly superior firepower will do wonders to cultivate a desire for peace where none presently exists.

266 The sanctions are actually taking a toll on Iran's economy. It is only the Chinese and to a lesser degree the Russians who keep them alive.

Russia doesn't really ultimately give a shit about the IRGC. They want them out of Syria and will use whatever means they have to force it.

China on the other hand is deliberately buying oil and stockpiling it in facilities that are qualified as "holding facilities" and therefore no technically imports.

Overall I don't think people truly understand how big a threat China is and this situation is no different. That's why I don't care if we ever strike a trade deal. We've been finding our own destruction for years. F them. The sooner we transition away from any dependence on them the better

If they had been fighting half decent generals -- no knock on the individual Argentine soldier, who fought well -- they would have had their clock cleaned. Especially as the Argies had Exocet anti-ship missiles. Now, have Britain even a patrol boat? A few nuke subs tied up in an estuary won't do much good. The USA will end up bailing them out. Posted by: Anonymous White Male at July 25, 2019 12:02 PM (m79Dg)

the best part is that he acts like Gary Busey, too.

it's been noted that his girlfriend is hot - but being Boris, the event that almost screwed up his chance to be PM, was that one night a couple weeks ago, after it began to look clear that Boris was going to be the next PM, Boris and his GF set in for a night of drinking and police had to be called to their flat because they decided to knock each other around for a couple hours and tear up the place.

Well, now they've sobered up and say that's all behind them now, and they're putting on a good face for the public. But Trump has a hell of a lot more self control than Boris has ever had.

Posted by: Tom Servo at July 25, 2019 12:06 PM (Kpl3J)

289 Cato your description of Japan is ridiculous, and every element of your claimed approach is make-believe. And using the dumb "neo con" label - which only applied to a small group of lefty intellectuals and didn't revolve around debates over use of force, is pointless. Kind of surprised to see CBD use the term.

Every situation is different. Fantasizing about "short, sharp" actions that won't achieve your purpose or protect your interests is, sadly, what seems to pass for "strategy" in place of dealing with challenges realistically. There might be cases where that approach makes sense, it all depends. Generalizing about use of force immediately leads to silliness, as scenarios vary too much.

All a question of furthering or protecting interests. How to do so, whether any interests even are at stake.

But would be nice to see, even once, those fantasizing about imposing your will with punitive strikes alone call for an appropriate military posture. Which would be a fraction of what we now have.

Boris has been caught messing up his hair when he thinks it's too neat.

I will say that his cabinet massacre runs counter to the disorganized and diffident image that his detractors try to present, he thoroughly cleaned house, when Jeremy Hunt demanded his sloppy seconds Boris threw him out and got rid of most of Hunt's supporters in the ministries for good measure.

You are not allowed to use physical force to respond to an insult - that's battery. You will be charged, and your only hope will be a sympathetic jury. You will also be sued if you have any money or own any property. So don't do it.

You also misunderstand the "fighting words" doctrine. It does not hold that a fight is justified by them, instead it holds that the police can arrest someone for Breach of the Peace if they are saying "fighting words". It is an exception to First Amendment Freedom of Speech rights.

now 100 years ago, men could fight over things like this, and the culture of the day said such things should be overlooked, and police generally would ignore them. We no longer live in that culture, we live in a highly litigious culture, and you can expect to be haled into court for any violent act you are involved in.

(and yes, "haled" not "hauled")

319 It sounds hard to believe, but Canada had the fourth largest navy in the world during the Second World War. They did pretty well at Juno Beach, too. Now they are a relatively united and prosperous country... not much military might, but in an era of cheap drones and global culture, do they need might?

Canada plus the Northeast and Northwest United States could easily be its own country. In the hands of a visionary, Canada might make the difference in the impending American battle.

341 308 304 Britain at present lacks both the tools and the will necessary to do the job in the gulf. Like most of the west, they have been relying on the U.S. military to protect them as they have vastly expanded domestic social spending.
Posted by: Archer at July 25, 2019 12:12 PM (gmo/4)

They have the tools, if only just. Their latest class of big frigates don't like warm Persian Gulf water for cooling their shit.

But let's face facts: the Brits were exhausted by WWII, Churchill embraced the law of temporal existence in his coalition government that gave Attlee free rein to bring in the welfare state and NHS after the war.

They were already paring well back by the time of Suez, and Dulles' foolish embrace of Nasser put paid to any real interest the Brits may have had in maintaining a global force.

The Brits gave up their own missile programs in exchange for JFK giving them Polaris, which given the stumbling nature of the UK arms industry and its ministerial customers at that time probably was the right choice. The MoD by this time was well into dismantling and consolidating the British arms industry, and within a few years would be refusing to do any national development, it was either buy American or go cap-in-hand to Froggie and beg them to work with them, trying to buy their way into the EEC/EU/whatever the fcuk it was then.

Thatcher was all about austerity, her government was squeezing the British forces until the pips squeaked. Had the Argies waited one more year the UK would not have had a navy capable of getting anything bigger than a popgun to the Falklands, the stuff that was scrubbed off and put back into service and sent off to the South Atlantic would have been sitting in a breaker's yard with the machinery pulled out and sold off.

It hasn't gotten vastly better since then: the quality of Brit hardware is very, very good but the quantity is, uh, problematic. And you can't send a ship to sea if you can't crew it, and UK demographics and economic conditions are such that recruitment is not easy.

Thank you, rhomboid. I honestly think that, despite the near monopoly of the Canadian establishment and the national rivalry with America, Canada still has potential. Not just for the history mentioned, but for recent politics. Rob Ford was Trump before Trump was cool- and that was in Toronto! The heart of the beast! Now his brother is a Premier.

Yes, I know Canada is (allegedly) its own country, but I meant a nation made out of Canada and New England would be considerably more stable culturally than one which tried to unite the Northern and Southern states. Ignore the potential at your peril, because the coming decades will be packed with change.

If it's work related, then you need to be cautious and not jeopardize your job. If it's just in the public, not work related, then give back what you get, tit for tat. Find a couple of muscled up friends to go out with if you feel physically intimidated by someone. The commies infiltrated and marched through our institutions, winning the domestic cold war while (kinda?) losing the cold war in the USSR break up. But with globalism and unlimited paper currencies ... the oligarchs clearly gained dominance in the West, with lawfare and forced open borders and ???

A strong military can still be effective in forcing the issue as needed, and at times some raids ... but as with F-22s deployed to Saudi Arabia, their mere presence is a negotiating tool, and influences even internal politics of Iran and ??? ... whatever. And much of the intrigue is in the shadows ... for US we hope, or for the globalists as well, maybe.

355 Thatcher came to Number 10 in 1979.

HMS Invincible finally commissioned in 1980 after having a typically protracted development cycle surviving multiple governments. Not just bad economics.

The heart of the Fleet Air Arm, the Sea Harrier, survived a similar problem.

Operation Corporate did not occur until 1982.

And now there are no Harriers in service and pi[Invincible was scrapped by a Turkish yard. So they pine for the QE II class and hope the JSF will actually work as advertised.

Britain fails to learn anything.

The Invincible 'through-deck cruisers' were a limited design, arguably less capable from an air-component perspective than the Hermes and the rest of the flattops the Brits had been scrapping, though certainly more modern in their systems. The Harrier was a useful piece of hardware but they still didn't have anything like a decent fleet AEW capability in 1982. IIRC they were scrounging RAF Harriers to put to sea to get the job done.

Also IIRC the Brits were laying up or selling off the other Invincibles they'd ordered almost before they were commissioned.
