CNN's Ratings Crash and Burn, Along With Its Credibility as a "News" Organization

It's not time to panic.

March was the time to panic. Now is the time for hanging yourself in the garage.

CNN is suffering a credibility crisis as viewership for the once-proud network continues to crater with no apparent plan in place to fix things anytime soon, according to media watchdogs and insiders.

CNN's audience shriveled in the second quarter of 2019, averaging only 541,000 total viewers, less than half Fox News Channel’s 1.3 million average. But CNN struggled even more during the primetime hours of 8-11 p.m. ET, finishing as the fifteenth most-watched network on basic cable behind networks such as TLC, Investigation Discovery and the Hallmark Channel. CNN averaged a dismal 761,000 primetime viewers while FNC averaged 2.4 million.

The Hill media guru Joe Concha told Fox News that CNN's freefall may not be slowing...

CNN started off the third quarter with "the network’s lowest average since 2015" when it comes to primetime viewers among the key demographic of adults age 25-54, according to TVNewser....

"You know the answer," a longtime CNN employee said when asked if staffers are panicked about the ratings decay before declining further comment.

...

"The people that are concerned -- it's certainly not the anchors who have lucrative contracts -- it's the people among the lower levels, such as producers and show bookers," the employee said.

How many 100s millions in the US are there?

And Fox News is the biggest national cable news audience puller.

CNN is dead already, same for MSNBC.

156 I know what's wrong with a lot of these Journalists. They suffer from the same disability I have, but not nearly as bad.

Most of the are Borderline Personality Disorder. If you don't know what that is, basically you are talking about an overemotional drama queen, who is mostly harmless in all other ways.

Women who have this usually are cutters. I'd bet a bunch of those journalists are cutters.

Usually this disability comes from abuse. I got mine courtesy of government schools. I was bullied every day, and nothing was ever done. For example, one day on the bus someone actually lit my hair on fire.

Those days, I didn't talk to anyone or bother anybody, I just wanted to learn and talk to girls. But nope.

So now I have a grudge against government schools. All of them at every level.

The only way I know how to fight them is to drive the price of education through the floor.

If you look at what I charge you can see its basically nothing; It's 800 for a year of training over 13 10week classes.

I'd like to push it lower. Lower, lower, lower.

197 We gave up on CNN during Hurricane Katrina. We watched wolf blitzers show. He had Mayor Nagin dead to rights on air saying "we don't need no government help, we are all fine down here."
The next day the mayor was back on with Wolf and the mayor was hysterical how nobody was helping them and GWB was trying to kill them.
Not a counter peep out of Blitzer. Hubs turned the channel permanently to Fox.

Posted by: Cheriebebe at July 12, 2019 03:29 PM (a4qVe)

I don't even remember seeing Nagin during Katrina. My memory was that he hid out in a hotel room somewhere.

I will say that Katrina did give us the only Keith Olbermann episode ever worth anything - a few days before the hurricane hit Olbermann had a guy in a local Walmart atht was being actively looted, including by a couple of fat women New Orleans cops, who actually spoke on the air and threatened to arrest the reporter (the only one in the store not stealing anything). It was hysterical.

356 Vanya,
What is played is a reflection of the listener. So, a comeback for good music will take an audience that appreciates it. When do we think we look for that?

I'm not hopeful, and I wonder if we are doomed. The Uni produces our ruling classes, and AOC is a populist. She seems to be doing well with that group.

So I'm, really seriously worried, and most of it is focused on the education system. We are not making Americans. If you read Dewey's Democracy and Education as the commies all have, you know that society is reborn with every new generation's education.

We are probably going to make it fine, but our kids and grandkids, the ones who are spared government schools, are going to be in big trouble.

I agree that it does assume a great deal more craftiness and intelligence in a corporation's head than is realistic. End result, Coke was even more entrenched as the top dog in the cola wars and it hasn't been close since. The company Pepsi has done well no doubt but it is not comparable to the company Coca Cola. The former is a very diverse foods company and the latter sells sugar syrup and now bottled water and other drinks. The is a reason people say "Will Pepsi be ok?" a million times a day.

Also, I heard that New Coke consistently beat out Classic Coke in taste tests. Many speculate the flaw was that the taste tests, like the Pepsi Challenge, ignored the food factor. I say they should have considered the JD factor too. Either way KO is a pretty remarkable company. It is not like no one has ever come up with a better tasting concoction in over a hundred years. The amazing part is that it doesn't matter anymore. Then again, they are making a killing selling people water as soda consumption drops.

What I read was that non-regular Coke drinkers liked New Coke more than Classic/Old.

But the regular Coke drinkers decidedly chose Classic/Old over New.

So, Coke decided to piss off its fan base, essentially, by listening to people who occasionally bought Coke instead of those who always lost Coke.

It's honestly exactly what Disney has done with Star Wars.

IIRC, that was because PepsiCo thought it a fine idea to buy some fast food chains, notably Taco Bell, KFC and Pizza Hut and only offer Pepsi. Captive market, right?

And then KO went to every other fast food chain and made the argument that if they served Pepsi, they were helping their fast food competitors, and all other chains that were PepsiCo customers, from Burger King to Dairy Queen, all switched to Coke.

Yeah, if every guy who'd ever jerked off to porn got blacklisted, well...
I mean, it was an adult theatre with a porn movie starring adult porn stars. No kids were involved, as far as I know.

I liked John Carter and specifically the ending. I guess it helped I didn't read the books. Maybe that's why I've hated all the modern Tarzan movies. ( naw they were just terrible)

It's funny because we all know now that Mar is not hot. It's cold.

C.S. Lewis had it right. On Venus, we go naked.

734 Pepsi sided with the arabs in the early 70s, honoring the arab boycott in order to sell in arab countries.

Pepsi can fuck off and die for all I care. I would never buy pepsi and I try not to patronize anything owned by PepsiCo. They are the lowest of dirtballs.

Make it three.

I enjoyed the movie, but see why it flopped. (Besides the bloated budget, anyway.)
Posted by: What's a Seawolf? at July 12, 2019 04:22 PM (u9hp4)

That bloated budget meant that it HAD to make about $700-800 million just to break even.

That's just crazy.

LOL - The sidebar link to Backwoods Hyperchicken Lawyer Ken White rattling on about the plea agreement with Epstein.

Everything that incompetent pretend lawyer is asking about was settled clearly in the Marra decision in SDFL.

Quite literally yesterday's news.

I'd love to hear the board room discussions where budgets that big get approved for unknown/unproven properties.

Is there really never a single voice of reason? Even well known franchises can bomb because of bloated budgets.

The director, Andrew Stanton, probably had a lot of goodwill. He had directed Finding Nemo which had made the studio lots of money. So that's definitely part of it.

749 J.J. Sefton: "How funny would it be if she gets a sponsorship gig at Nike... for 65% of what Kaepernick gets?"

Heh. That would be fun. I'm 100% sure she'd reject the money out of principle because she's just that straight.

Also, I doubt Nike will be handing out sponsorships to all of the team, so I can envision some resentment about her sucking up all the oxygen and cash for a TEAM sport.
