On his radio show today, Rush said he thought it had to do with American POWs being identified as alive during Reagan's admin, and VP Bush was tasked to coordinate a rescue attempt "off the books" so the military wouldn't have to pay/account for it. [Makes no sense in hindsight since there are black budgets for that kind of thing -- but maybe they wanted to make sure it didn't trace back to the military/administration.]

I mean that in a good way. Perhaps the exposure of the globalists for who and what they are was inevitable, and in truth it took another 8 years of another Bush and then 8 of Obama after him for enough to wake up and be ready to elect Trump. Lolololol. I have a center-left friend at work and sometimes we talk politics. He once asked me about something or other that some politician was planning and asked me why I objected. I have used a lot of arguments in the past - centralization of power, local decision-making, constitutionalism, states' rights, etc. - and it never really swayed him.
That time I simply replied, "Because I do not believe that government is essentially a force for good. Government is necessary and important but should be extremely limited to prevent abuse." It seemed to get through to him. He seems more open now.
Of course, it could be how batshit crazy the Dems have gone over the past few years. It's probably that, but I prefer to take the credit, so...

I happened to be in Simi Valley for work when his body was transported to the Reagan Library. The streets were lined for miles -- it was very moving.
Although I didn't get to serve in the military, my only reaction as the car with Nancy and Ronnie passed was to respectfully salute ... with tears in my eyes.

I actually find that a very adult opinion, and although I may not share it completely, encourage that kind of balanced take.
I'm settling in the camp that Perot was right about *some* protectionism, although I'm not a protectionist, per se. Trump has a penchant for it, and we'll see how good it does. I'm at least willing to see how it goes.
Perot did some good things, but he could almost join the Democrat 2020 clown car with his redistributionist, we-ought-to-pay-the-world-more, pro-gay, pro-government-paid-abortions, pro-VAT Tax, pro-Medicare-For-All stances in the 1990s(!)
And his egregious oversimplification of "solutions" I just cannot abide.

Perot was right about NAFTA. He was wrong about a lot of other things.
But I don't think Trump's tariffs are really protectionism. He isn't really using them to defend specific industries (though you could make a compelling argument about steel), but as a policy cudgel to use against economic bad actors. Tariffs all look alike at the end of the day, but there is a big difference between tariffs like "your cars are 20% cheaper than my cars, so I'm slapping on a tariff to make the price the same and defend my industry" and "you're a cheating scoundrel I'm slapping a general tariff on you until you clean up your behavior because I'm tired of paying for your free ride."
Trump is doing a lot more of the latter than the former. And if it prevents war over these issues, then the added costs are worth paying.

Admiral Stockdale was one of the noblest men to ever put on the Navy's uniform. As senior POW in N. Viet Nam, he was ruthlessly tortured.
He stood up for his men, and never used anything about being a POW as an excuse for something. His hearing was permanently impaired. Which is why he was fiddling with his hearing aids at the VP debate. And the crowd laughed at him.
I remember the day he died, and some local radio wag was mocking him. I was about this close to going down there and beating that guy with an axe.

I think Perot was wrong about a lot of things, but this idea that Republicans were doing anything but just conning us is where I part ways.
Bush Sr gave us the Americans with Disabilities Act that has been an absolute boondoggle, but I guess he was the real conservative because he never talked about health care like Perot did where he said we were spending government money in stupid ways on health care
Perot also had a lot of conservative positions, favored school vouchers, getting tough on crime, balancing the budget/deficit, privatizing social security, not signing foreign treaties that give away our soverignty, etc.
What conservative victory did Bush Sr ever have?
His one conservative SC pick was offset by liberal Souter that he bungled .
