Disposable diapers are made from a blend of plastic and wood pulp. Unfortunately, a few of the states have decided to take measures into their own hands. California looks like it'll be one of the handful of states (so far) that intend to enact their own penal... er, tax... on those who don't have medical insurance. The bill has already passed the legislature. And Governor Newsome has apparently proposed similar legislation on his own. So I expect him to sign it without complaint.
No Republicans voted for it. One Democrat voted against it.
The penalty will not, of course, apply to people in this country illegally. But even this wasn't enough for one Democrat. State Senator Maria Elena Durazo (D) apparently complained that none of the funds received from this penal... er, tax... would be ear-marked for illegal aliens over the age of 65.

It took Creative Assembly a while, but they finally got around to touching on the subject matter. Last month, they released Total War: Three Kingdoms, which is a combination of real-time battles and strategic empire building. Due to my interest in the era, I had to get it.
The inevitable problems have been interesting. First and foremost, some of the special abilities that certain rulers have appear to be doing a bit too spectacularly well when the computer is running the rulers in question. There are stories about Yuan Shao (one of the rulers in question) quite literally acquiring half of China as vassals over the course of a few turns. Alternately, Liu Bei (another of the rulers in question) can end up forcibly incorporating non-aligned territory at an alarming rate. But that's apparently not the worst of it.
As is the case with most recent Total War games, building your own dynasty is an important part of the game. The ruler that you start the game with won't be alive at the end of the game, even if he manages to avoid any unfortunate accidents suffered at the point of a sword. The games last longer than a human's life span. So having kids, getting your kids married, and watching those kids have heirs is kind of important. That, of course, requires that a man and a woman be married together so that the babies can start popping out. As is usual, there's no shortage of eligible males.
Eligible females, on the other hand...
Players have noticed a rather disturbing lack of single females in the game. Things are rather tight at the start. But they get downright ridiculous late in the game. One of the reasons for this is that the game is apparently producing a horribly lop-sided number of male children. And, in one of those moments of dark humor, there's reason to believe that the cause of this gender imbalance is one of Creative Assembly's sops to the SJW crowd.
In short, the game allows women to serve as generals just like men (despite the fact that this is horribly ahistorical, and that no army at the time would have accepted a woman as its commander). And there are reasons (which I won't get into) to believe that the steps CA took to bring this about is causing the game to generate a lot more male children than female children.

Now, this may just be a ruse to try to trick the Republicans to return to the state senate to get the bill passed (all bills not passed die on June 30th, under Oregon law), but the left-wingers in Oregon are pissed. It's fun to watch.
The cap and trade bill would have increased the price of gasoline by fifty cents now, by a couple of bucks in a couple of years, and would have doubled the price of heating your home in a few years, among its many other effects.
All the Republicans want is for the bill to be put up for a popular vote, but the Democrats refuse - the voters of Washington voted down a similar bill by a big margin last year, so it seems almost certain that the voters of Oregon would do the same thing.

that doesn't deserve a serious response, but this is one issue that always chaps the HELL out of me - the so-called "party of science" totally IGNORING science that has been well established for at least a century and a half, and it has to do with the south sea islands.
Ignore the issue of whether the ocean is really rising much at all, which is separate, and for the sake of argument assume it's rising. Charles Darwin *Himself* wrote a treatise over 150 years ago while in the South Pacific on the Beagle, and he wrote out a detailed explanation as to why the coral based atolls in the region (all of the islands we're talking about) would ALWAYS readjust their heights to maintain the same relative levels with respect to the sea. He pointed out that it had been happening for hundreds of thousands of years, and would continue to happen. Every scientific measurement made over the last 150 years has shown that Darwin's predictions were amazingly accurate.

That was almost certainly one of the games in Koei-Tecmo's *other* Three Kingdoms franchise. It's called, appropriately enough, "Romance of the Three Kingdoms".
I started playing one of the early games in that series quite a while back. But I didn't know anything about the era then, and the game pretty much tossed me in with no background as to what was going on. So I had no idea about the identities of any of the people who I was dealing with. I quit pretty quickly after starting it up.
More recently, the sister strategy game series - Nobunaga's Ambition - has a "fulfill these objectives, and we'll advance the timeline with cutscenes" thing going for it. So you can play along and get a dramatized version of some of the events of the Japanese Sengoku Jidai (which is what that game covers). I'm guessing that RotK does the same for the Three Kingdoms era (and in a much more historically accurate fashion than Dynasty Warriors). But I haven't taken the time to confirm that suspicion.

A couple of large companies are buying up distressed Oregon marijuana retail stores that are unable to compete, due to the excessive number of stores.

Several years ago, Virginia's Democrats decided that they needed to have a meeting to decide how to "connect" to the rural communities of western Virginia. Their idea of going to the rural area was to have the meeting in Roanoke City at a luxury hotel located in the middle of the city. They could have gone about 45 minute drive south and had it in Martinsville, 45 minute drive west and had it in Radford, but they chose to have it at a hotel that was 5 minutes from the largest airport west of Richmond.
Plus, those other places didn't have luxury hotels even though there are hotels in those places with plenty of meeting rooms to have the confab.

One of the high schools in Richland, Washington is nicknamed "The Bombers" - their school symbol used to be a nuclear explosion, but now they have something more pacific as a symbol. (The plutonium for the Nagasaki bomb was produced in the nuclear reactors on the Hanford nuclear reservation nearby.)
A Japanese exchange student was horrified by this, and suggested that the school change the nickname. (The Nagasaki bomb killed "innocent people", you see.) The locals politely told her to pound sand.

Now - there's no point in hobbling your own assistance activity by having your staff living in squalor or danger if it's avoidable - but it's one of those judgement/context things, and WB was renowned for cushy options in all cases, which kinda sorta absolutely sits poorly with their mission.
My record reimbursement form for a hotel was: 47 cents a night [at rate of exchange for worthless temporary local currency during a civil war]. Only non-refugee in the place. But quite good, great opportunity to talk with the sort of people we were aiming to help, plus good fun otherwise.
The bombed-out former Soviet army barracks, in January, at elevation, in another nearby war zone was free - and worth every cent. But also fun. And, well, the only option to being outside [tho it was kinda outside, place was laid open with serious damage].

All we can do is look back to the point where the enormity ended, and it's an important one, because an entire huge and mighty nation squandered ALL of its youth, and ALL of it's treasure defeating this, and another 150 years sorting out the consequences.

LOL. One of the guys I went to grad school with graduated from Richland High School, and never passed up an appropriate opportunity to display his high school apparel and accessories with the mushroom cloud on them.
Richland is rather proud of its role in the Manhattan Project - there is a "General Groves Park", for example. Of course, Richland only exists because of the Manhattan Project - it was just ranch land, until the Army decided that its remote location next to the Columbia River was the perfect place to put nuclear reactors.

The plane in the background probably started out as a B-25D-25-NA made in Kansas City. Then it was assigned to the war in the Pacific. Hence the plane's defensive firepower was upgraded to D2 standards by installing two waist hatches with .50cal machine guns and a tail gunner station with a single .50cal on a jeep spring under new glazing.
Then to make things even more unique, on the waist position we can see in this photo, it has been mostly covered over leaving only a small square opening. Why? Probably will forever remain unknown the answer.
And finally lets look at the nose. Unlike a vast majority of B-25Ds converted into strafing planes, this Mitchell has received one of the North American B-25J gun nose conversion kits that allowed units in the field to turn any glass nosed Mitchell into an aerial buzz-saw with eight .50s.

Speaking of old airplanes, I was at the hotel earlier, and the TV had the sports network on, and it was a talk segment. They had some guy, who looked like a penis-sipper, haughtily explaining that the 1970 "Soccer War" between Honduras and El Salvador was really not about soccer at all, but something else.
One of the pics they showed was a crew loading bombs onto a bright aluminum twin-engined tail dragger bomber, with some sort of nose art on it. Would that be an A-26? I think it had inline engines in the nacelles, not radials.

I don't know how the CAF Mustangs were equipped or restricted in the radio compartment.
NVAF MiGs were reputed to NOT have "Guard" crystals installed in their radio sets, just TO prevent any comms with the hated Yankees.
And "lowering landing gear" and "weaving" are great surrender maneuvers.
IF the closing F8-U Crusader drops below supersonic in time to determine anything more than the Cuban Air Force livery before delivering ordnance.
The Crusader's "Master Arm" switch would've been "hot", a full 20 miles out, before visual range.
Same applies to any given interceptor of the early '60s.
And had it been a Convair F-102?
A few years too early to have maybe been GWB's first and only "kill" in the TX Air National Guard.
Manny Sr. made the right call to sail the Cape Dory, I think.

The Bermuda Triangle doesn't survive statistical analysis. Ships and planes don't disappear, crash/sink, etc any more than anywhere else. It's just that area has a lot more traffic.
Lloyd's of London doesn't charge any higher rates for ships that transit, announcing way back in 1975 that statistical analysis that showed there was no more risk there than anywhere else.

Drove the truck away. It sure does bounce a bit with no weight on the ass end.
Then I used the tractor to push the deck up close to the shop so I could reach it with air lines and electrical cords. Got a bunch of extraneous steel off the bottom side. I am going to have to make a 92" torch cut through 5/16" steel plate to trim the back end of it down. I can just see dollar bills taking wings, with me burning all that sweet oxy and acetylene.
The stripped-down truck deck will become an entry ramp for the west-side vehicle door into my shop, which has gone without for years. Should be plenty strong enough to support cars and pickups. The high side will rest on a 6X6 pressure-treated timber, and the low side will rest in a shallow trench to make the low edge flush with the ground. I will drive some long metal stakes through the stake pockets to pin it to the ground.
Poured concrete ramps would be nice, but they cost real money.

I think I've mentioned this before, but I've got one of the old school shirts with the mushroom cloud logo. I had a student I knew get one for me when I was up there for a short period of time. It's tucked away in a drawer and doesn't get worn because -
1.) It was a bit small even when I got it, and
2.) Wearing it would eventually cause it to become, well, worn out.

Search on-line for photo processing labs. There are a few labs out there that can still do now-obsolete size films, like 110.
If the cameras were never stored in a very hot place, the film may still be OK, although some color degradation can be expected.

We are now on the third installation of the neighbor's halogen security light across the road. Each time, the light has moved farther away, thank dog. It is now on the other end of their property and lighting up the neighbors to the south like broad daylight. But I can at least see the stars again.
I read recently that full-time security lights make no difference in the likelihood of being burgled and can in fact make it easier for a burglar. Anyone who wants to burgle this place will have his way nicely lit.

I think the teacher quitting this is a big setup. I see time and other mags have stories on how poor teachers are. But every time you take teachers per hour pay you find out that they are right there with others. I think the CON Ed rules that force them to get their next 2 or 3 degrees then show on paper that they are not earning what other are with that 2 or 3rd degree when the reality is that 2 or 3rd CON Ed degree is worthless unless you leave the class and go to admin.

I heard yesterday on Zeoli that, in the unlikely event that Bernie's college loan amnesty were implemented, the IRS would consider the amount forgiven as income and boy howdy! you'd owe taxes on that $75,000.00 retired loan debt. Heh.

I've only been on the periphery of something bubbling underneath the waters there, and don't really know what the problem is. But still, it makes me think there has been some infiltration, since it is a gigantic organization that the Left has wanted to take down for a long, long time.
