The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

I acknowledge that students who are entering STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields must attend college. But for most of the rest, sending your child to college is playing Russian roulette with their values, character and even joy of life. Dennis Prager

Quote II

"A judge has no right to tell an independent media outlet to remove factually based content and commentary from a website, particularly since this website is my livelihood. As a former history teacher, I understand why the Founding Fathers insisted that free speech be protected in the Bill of Rights, particularly speech that some may find offensive. Protecting agreeable speech is easy, but our freedoms are put to the test when some find it to be controversial." Aidan Kearney

Quote III

"When your personal experience, and particularly your livelihood, is tied up in a particular pattern of the world, it’s really hard right to hear anybody say anything that appears to attack that or discredit it." Janine Parry

Quote IV

"Thanks. I will pass on this.” Former United States Attorney Andrew Luger

We all know this. But it is worth repeating: Liberals are hypocrites.

Canada declared a national climate emergency on Monday. The next day, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau gave the greenlight to a massive oil sands pipeline.

The House of Commons, with strong support declared climate change a “real and urgent crisis.” A week before, Justin Trudeau proposed a ban on single-use plastics, which, if implemented, would be the latest in a growing number of bans on plastic that could put multibillion-dollar bets on plastics and petrochemicals by the oil industry at risk.

But Trudeau has never really stood in the way of Canada’s oil industry, despite years of platitudes about addressing climate change. That was clear on June 18, when he gave the approval to the Trans Mountain Expansion (not for the first time), a $4.5 billion twin pipeline that would run along an existing line from Alberta to the Pacific Coast in British Columbia.

Last week we covered Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) pandering to the student debt holders. This week she is pandering to the gay population.

Elizabeth Warren has made a campaign of promising nearly every identity group in existence some form of monetary handout. Whether it’s race, age, or socioeconomic background, she’s got something for you. From reparations for the descendants of slaves to paying off student loans of millennials.

The media have taken this as a sign of just how serious of a candidate she is. You see, she has “plans” and that’s what really matters here. The fact that her plans are mostly nonsensical, not possible, and sometimes even harmful don’t play into the equation.

Well, Warren isn’t done yet. She’s got a new string she’s pulling on.

Gay reparations.

U.K. schools continue to sing the SJW song loud and clear.

Ah, school days — those innocent days of youth. On second thought, make that “mostly innocent.” Kids who fought a lot or were found cheating faced suspension. So did children who acted up in class.

Students were never suspended for refusing to accept the politically correct notion that there are more than two genders, but times have changed. The Evening Standard reports:

Once again The ONT is looking out for you. The best place to have sex................ And the answer isn't any room where you can get lucky.

When it comes to sex, most couples save their intimate moments for the bedroom.

But according to one doctor they should make more effort to spice things up a bit and move to different rooms in the house.
Dr Shahzadi Harper, an expert in menopause and libido, claims the best place to have sex is the kitchen.

While it may not seem like the most hygienic setting, she says there's one huge benefit to getting down to it in the room.

Apparently the kitchen is much better when it comes to burning calories.

I can hear the SJWs and leftists crying.

When Kimberly Matte captions an Instagram post “suns out, guns out, buns out,” she mostly means it. The sun may be out, but she’s inside. Her buns are definitely out, because she’s wearing a lime-green thong. Technically, there’s only one gun out, but it’s an AR-10 battle rifle, so she’s still overdelivering.

Matte has more than 84,000 followers on Instagram and recently founded her own social media marketing and modeling agency. She grew up in Windsor, Ontario, one of seven children — a fan of skateboarding, dirt-biking, four-wheeling, soccer, and tree forts, and not of guns. The first time she held a shotgun, she was a kid, “65 pounds soaking wet.” Her dad and brothers thought it would be funny to let her shoot it. “They didn’t tell me it was going to basically rip my shoulder off,” she says. “I was like, I’m never touching a gun again.”

But then three years ago, she moved to Michigan to be with her American husband, who’d recently retired from the military. Now they shoot guns together, and arrange assault-weapon-centric lingerie photo sessions for Matte and her clients. She makes good money for her part, doing sponsored posts for brands both firearm-related and not — assault rifles one day, teeth-whitening treatments the next. For $100 and some free products, Matte will post a “selfie and shoutout” on her Instagram grid; she gets paid thousands of dollars per month for recurring endorsements.

Prostitute, car thief and Genius Award Winner.

UNE 21--An Alabama woman has been charged with the sexual torture of a 25-year-old man who was “under the influence of GHB” and bound with duct tape when he was assaulted, according to court filing.

In a charge sheet filed this week, Jennifer Johnson, 36, was accused of violating the incapacitated man with a sex toy at a residence in Cottondale, a Tuscaloosa suburb.

Police learned of the March 19 attack when they discovered incriminating videos on Johnson’s phone following her arrest last month for possession of a stolen Honda Civic. At the time of her May 10 bust, Johnson “stated she was a prostitute,” according to a court filing.

Attending a professional sporting event as a child is a pretty special event. It is even more special when you get to meet your "idol". Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

Albert Pujols and the Angels went home with a loss in Thursday’s contest against the Blue Jays, but the future Hall of Famer took time after the game to make sure one young fan went home a winner.

Nico, a child with Down syndrome, was wearing Pujols’s jersey in the crowd. And as the Angels came together following the game, Pujols appeared to notice him in the stands down the first-base line.

That’s when Pujols jogged over to Nico, pulled off his jersey and signed it prior to presenting it to the fan.

51 I acknowledge that students who are entering STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields must attend college. But for most of the rest, sending your child to college is playing Russian roulette with their values, character and even joy of life. Dennis Prager

He's absolutely right. A motivated student can study literature, history, philosophy, English, whatever on his own.

It's tough to do the same with STEM subjects, certainly initially, and it would take the student inordinately long to get up to speed.

Why do I say that? Because STEM subjects typically compound intellectually very quickly, by which I mean that having any chance of grasping next week's material will necessitate mastering this week's material. If you fall behind, pretty soon you're dragged behind and can never catch up.

For example, if a student fails to master this week's material on the nomenclature of organic compounds, he'll be dead meat next week when the lecturer starts talking about, say, alpha,beta-unsaturated ketones and does not draw the structures.

In math, if you don't have a stranglehold on, say, differentiation, you're dead meat when Lagrange multipliers comes up.

This is my conjecture on why people don't like STEM subjects, and/or consider them difficult. There's no point in cramming the night before a test; if you haven't kept up, you might as well go party that night, because there is NO WAY you can possibly master a term's worth of material in a night. No one can do that.

Contrast that with, say, literature. You can dip into literature here and there, as you like, without adverse consequences, because there is no comparable conceptual progression in literature as there is in STEM. The night before a test, you can dip into some of the assigned texts, get some idea of the plot and the major characters, and bullshit your way through if necessary.

(Full disclosure: I minored in literature, although I did not have recourse to the strategy outlined above.)

The point of the administrative state is to ensure that *nobody's* vote matters. Much easier to just back it to the rafters with aligned bureaucrats and then maintain the vote because it doesn't matter much in the grand scheme of things.

Yup. Ever since they made aptitude testing by employers essentially illegal, the "college degree" became a proxy. It's more than possible to go upside down on the transaction now, though. It is so damn expensive that job training and going blue-collar may well put you ahead of the six-figure liberal arts major.

90 Re: Quote II:

As an erstwhile Reason subscriber: fuck 'em. They'll whine about the government censor because it's safe, and then defend the corporate one, because it's not.

Hell, just look at rap music over the last 15 years.

In 2003, Westside Connection took serious heat for releasing an album called "Terrorist Threats" with  this lyric from "Lights Out..."

"Here comes the young Osama
With that al-Qaeda drama."

Now, don't get me wrong... that wasn't cool. It's still too soon for that joke, much less a year and a half after. But it was edgy, and transgressive, and WC was yuuuge... people were bumping their raps on five continents. It pissed off a lot of people (myself included, and I was a fan).

Back then, nothing was off limits in rap, and everybody - everybody - was fair game.

Rap is now completely PC. It's pathetic.

Can you imagine a rapper bashing gays every other song like Eminem? Or advocating outlawing abortion, or flat-out demanding street justice death penalties for men and women who get abortions, like Geto Boys? No.

For instance, the only song I can think of that mentions gays is the horribly lame "Same Love" by that sad weenie Macklemore.

Even rap has necrotic soy-dick.

Anyone who has anything controversial to say, even big stars, better STFU if they want to keep a job.

Free speech is a dead letter, and the government was able to pull that off without lifting a finger. The enemy is us.

In 2017, Ilhan Omar filed for divorce from Ahmed Nur Said Elmi (her alleged brother).

2017. This wasn't years ago. She was 34, and in the Minnesota state legislature.

She filed a special divorce petition, used in cases where the person wanting the divorce doesn't know the whereabouts of her spouse.

Omar, under penalty of perjury, swore in the divorce filing that:

-That she had no contact with, and didn't know the whereabouts of Elmi since 2011.

-That she didn't know any of Elmi's relatives.

-That she and Elmi had no acquaintances in common.

Perjury. Perjury. Perjury.

And explain to me why so many come out of college with less knowledge of history, civics, and the classics than when they went in? Look at this student debt issue that is resonating so much that it is the top of twitter and the focus of the Dem debate. Would student loan debt be such a huge issue if these degrees were paying off? There are alternatives, just ask Mike Rowe. I would require all students to listen to Mike Rowe speeches for a semester and forget all the SJW gobbledygook that is just adding to the bill.

153 What seems to be the key, degree or not, is focus and a plan.

It's long been suspected that what the wage gap between college graduates and non-college graduates is actually measuring is the difference between motivated and unmotivated people. Graduating from college is just a proxy for that.

Glad hers was good. When I was on the college tour carousel, most schools had affable cheerleader types (men or women) do that. The higher up I went, though, the more off-putting they became. The worst of the bunch was NYU. I think they thought they were giving a "don't come here, you're not good enough and we don't you" pitch instead of a sales pitch. And they also butchered the language in a way that was an embarrassment to their school. It was the only college tour that resulted in an immediate "that's a big 10-NOPE" from me. Hell, Penn was more affable and they're an Ivy.

173 Outside skilled trades, not having a degree can definitely be a hindrance. In IT, once you're past the intern/entry level stage, you reach a point where you hit a promotability plateau. Finding a lateral job is harder. You either have a degree and become management, or go contractor with all of the income uncertainty and hired-gun stigma. Not to mention your resume either looks like a mess of bullet points or HR rejects you outright because they don't know the technologies they're hiring for and are just playing buzzword bingo.

It would be nice if there were a civilian technical equivalent of CWO/LDO for IT: do specialized work, be very good at it, haunt the smoke pit with a mug of coffee all day, manage nobody, write no evals, give no fucks. Oh well. Maybe there is, but I am still looking for it.

190 Regarding Quote 3 and its link and the numbskulls who love themselves some Public Radio and some tribal officials who love Mother Earth---grow the f**k up and read some history---you might learn something more nuanced than Captain Planet cartoons.

You don't think people should use the term "climate change" around rural people? OK, that's a good start. Here's a good next step: Don't take the "rural peoples'" tax money to fund your pagan religious propaganda.

I know that the science is settled, just as it was in the 1880s, when the rain followed the plow, and man was able to completely change the climate just by cultivating rangeland west of the 100th Meridian. There were never, ever any droughts after that, right?

I mean this is, like, science.

Yes, I'm angry. Maybe even furious. I'm weary of having to live under the rules of very, very stupid people like an assistant city manager in Stillwater, Oklahoma, and an under-educated dolt in a pickup with tax-exempt plates trying to tell fifth-generation farmers how to grow crops.

The best part was when he asked "Do you have any dogs in the house that might be a problem?"
I said, "Only if the tech is afraid of being licked to death by a friendly dog!"
He laughed and said "I have a dog myself!", and we proceeded to exchange dog stories for about ten minutes. It was a very refreshing conversation and we both commented on how dehumanizing the call center business model is!

Calgary is in the midst of a huge recession right now. Oil companies are laying off hundreds of office workers. But nearly every block of downtown Calgary has a yuuuge high-rise office tower or condo project going up. The builders can't suspend work on them; they'd be sued out the ying-yang for breach of contract. So the construction workers are doing just fine. 266 like juicy smollet.

Speaking of Kim Foxx, the wonderful State's Attorney (DA) of Cook County, the Second City Cop police blog mentioned an incredible story from a couple of years ago.

Woman in Chicago commits a crime. Since it's a first time offense, the judge says that if she keeps her nose clean for a few months, her conviction will be expunged. Not a bad deal.

She doesn't keep her nose clean - she's caught speeding without a valid license. Gets probation. Completely blows off the terms of her probation. The Chicago cops pull her over for a traffic violation 500 days later. The judge orders her held in jail pending trial, because she obviously can't be trusted to show up for court appearances.

Complicating fact - she's pregnant, and will give birth soon. The judge is unyielding, and notes that the Cook County hospital treats inmates in the Cook County jail. She gives birth in the hospital.

New court hearing - the defendant shows up with her three-week-old baby, and an attorney starts screaming at the judge that he had no right to hold a pregnant woman in jail. The judge yells right back. Makes the papers.

Plot twist: the attorney screaming at the judge was the prosecutor - the #2 guy in Kim Foxx's office.

Now, you'd expect the public defender to forcefully represent his criminal client, but for the prosecutor to do so was - unusual.

So, the Chicago criminal justice system now has:

the public defender, who represents the interests of criminal defendants, and

the prosecuting state's attorney, who now also represents the interests of criminal defendants.

Somebody calculated that forgiving a student debt would be a major wealth transfer to the children of upper and upper-middle class families from everyone else.

The sort of person who goes $100,000+ into debt usually comes from an affluent family, went to an expensive private college, and decided to major in something "fulfilling", like art history, theater, or women's studies. It never occurred to them that their parents' affluence was a function of their parents' professional skills, and that a continued upper-middle-class existence was not theirs by birthright.

More than 1 million new cases of four common strands of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are contracted every day across the globe. That's according to the report by the World Health Organization.

The four diseases responsible for those new infections are chlamydia, gonorrhea, trichomoniasis (or "trich") and syphilis.

In fact, 1 in every 25 people worldwide has at least one of these diseases.

I believe this story is just going to fade away, and pretty rapidly. I've noticed something almost amusing if it wasn't so typical - the actual Left are staying far, far away from the story - they know it will drag them down to get associated with it, because it's so full of holes it's guaranteed to blow up on anyone who buys into it.

So who's pushing it hard? Allahpundit- The Cuckshed - David French - George Conway - ALL of the Nevertrumpers who are desperately thrilled and elated at even the hint of a story like this. And repeating it isn't even being done for the goal of taking Trump down, since they know that won't happen. Look at every instance of those cretins mentioning - their real target is US, Trump supporters who they hate even more than Trump himself, because won't worship their wisdom. Every story is "ha, see we were RIGHT you moral degenerates you are all worthless slobs you should have listened to us and did what we told you to do! We hates you we hates you we does!!!"

And that's really all that idiot Rape in Bergdorf's story is about. One last note - the accuser is at least smart enough to say "oh I'm not filing any charges or making any police reports." Heh. She can put a story like that in her garbage book, but she sure knows better than to repeat it under oath. Which of course is why she never did and never will.

Basically things to do and NOT do at a bar when you order, such as demand high-status spirits in lowbrow cocktails.

Another tip is, if you go to a high-end bar, order something high-end; if you go to a dive, order a dive drink.

I'd think half the fun of visiting a snooty richie-rich bar is ordering something so ghetto, it makes the bow-tied bartender turn purple.

It is obvious the guy just started slapping away at the keyboard for a ten minutes or so. Again, I give them credit, they are making money on this stuff. It is easier to bitch about it than to do better.

The one the guy had right was asking for a shaken Martini. A, Ian Flemming was wrong and B, the guy who drinks it could not tell the difference on a bet. OTOH, as said by Ace's liver, make the drink and stop judging. You are a bartender. A great job but not so good to be judging people. It is like the casino dealers who think they know better and lost their paychecks proving that idea false.

Interesting that feminists agree it was right to lobotomize her so that her habits wouldn't impact her brother's run for president.

405 free public transportation for "the poor"

Because nothing encourages normal people to take public transportation like turning public transit into a rolling homeless shelter.

You can also do what Portland did, which was provide free, unlimited transit passes to high school students That encourages normal people to take public transportation too.

and of course a fuckton of new taxes.

The other thing that "woke" cities will be trying soon is to tie as many governmental fees and fines as possible to income. For example, if you get a speeding ticket, the amount of the fine should be tied to your income.

A now-departed Portland city councilman suggested tying parking charges to income - apparently you would have to put your driver's license into the parking machine, the machine would retrieve your income from the state tax database, and would then determine how much to charge you.

410 Good evening.

Thanks for some Zappa finale, MisHum. Even with his man-bun.

All too short. The vid. His life.

My intro to Frank was a friend in H.S. who had the Mothers' Freak Out double album. I was never the same after that.

Well, actually, before that, I'd seen Only In It For the Money advertised in Marvel comics, and wondered, what genius has realized it was time to market rock to funnybookers? Sure stood out from the X-Ray Specs ads!

When I got to college, first year, the Mothers were the homecoming band. Unforgettable. One of only two good things from that college, the other being meeting Milady.

Momentary lull.
Guy real loud in the audience: "EAT ME, FRANK!"
Hush falls over the crowd.
Frank pauses, then intones: "I hope that's a girl with a really deep voice."
Audience roars. Band plays.

Then a Zappa groupie (seriously) and I hitched down to Chicago (we were so dumb) to catch first run of 200 Motels. Substance-free, I came out sorta tripping. I might've enjoyed it even more if the groupie hadn't been giving me inside remarks about everything in the movie.

Milady and I got to see him in Chicago, with his surprise guest star, "Mister Sting." That was a helluva show, too.

and then all too soon he was gone.

That's how it's done in Norway. I remember a story where some rich guy got a $300k speeding ticket. The question is why anybody would bust his ass to make more money in a country where the price of everything goes up with your income. I had a friend with a similar problem. She was headed to a job site in Germany. She had a layover in Paris. The company handled the visas and whatnot. This was pre-EU.

Apparently the company got something wrong with the paperwork. When she got to CDG they told her she didn't have permission to be in France, that her visa was only good for Germany. They literally wouldn't let her walk 100 yards to the Lufthansa terminal and board a flight to Frankfurt, because those 100 yards were in France.

It took two hours to sort out, by which time she'd missed the flight to Fankfurt and had to spend the rest of the day in CDG, with a strict admonition not to leave the airport. I've always wondered if it was real or if there was some French guy looking to wring a bribe out of a weary traveler.

It's also kinda funny in light of the millions of people pouring over the border in recent years.

420 51 I acknowledge that students who are entering STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields must attend college. But for most of the rest, sending your child to college is playing Russian roulette with their values, character and even joy of life. Dennis Prager

"He's absolutely right. A motivated student can study literature, history, philosophy, English, whatever on his own.

"It's tough to do the same with STEM subjects, certainly initially, and it would take the student inordinately long to get up to speed..."

The problem is that while yes, indeed, STEM fields and study are extremely important, and yes, I suppose you can be motivated and study fields that require silly skills like reading on one's own, in this world, it takes all kinds.

For me, STEM fields are difficult because the math required is a nightmare for me. I stalled at Algebra I in HS and was happy to knock out College Algebra at the university level. At the same time, I have known people who have mastered various aspects of STEM or people in the medical world looking at me as if though I was the intellectual almighty just for studying history (and therefore able to speak to that subject and others) even though I was looking at them as if THEY were the intellectual almighty just for their mastery of skills such as math.

The point is that just as I would be in a world of hurt if I were confronted with the task of designing a structurally sound bridge, many of them would be shrieking with agony if they found themselves in an archive stuck doing a simple research project.

Again,in this world, it takes all kinds. We ALL have our role.

Have you considered attending our "university"?

Posted by: Florida International University at June 25, 2019 12:34 AM (zCabI)

426 People who fancy themselves "all stemmy" like to conjecture that you can teach yourself history, philosophy, and literature, but arithmetic is so important that you have to be in a club with them.

If you teach yourself structural engineering, and then build a house, there's a fair to middling chance that when the house falls in, it only takes the self-taught engineer with it. Do that with a belief system, and screw up, and you do to whole mobs of people, families and all, what Prager is so worried about happening at Brooklyn or NYU.

The main reason for having the so-called "arts grads" out there in the world is that when you have whole clusters of arithmetic majors toiling away in their corporate cubicles, somebody has to be in charge to take care of them. Especially when they screw up and hurt people, because they are not capable of handling the consequences, the poor dears.

Food for thought...

All assassins are crazy. But some more than others, and it seems to be a recent trend for them to just be loony gollums like Adam Lanza, et. al.

Booth had a reason to kill Lincoln. Guiteau had one for Garfield, Czolgosz had one for McKinley.

Then there was John Schrank, when things seemed to turn. He shot Roosevelt because McKinley's ghost commanded him to.

After that, Oswald shot Kennedy, vaguely because he was a Communist, but mostly because he was insane.

I suspect Sirhan Sirhan of something similar (but Arab nationalist instead of Commie). He was a raving lunatic, as well, though, and it's hard to even tell with him.

After that, it was just straight up lunatics.

Squeaky Fromme needs no introduction.

Sarah Jane Moore was a madwoman who went from SLA to FBI informant to attempted Presidential assassin over an obsession with Patty Hearst.

Then Hinckley stalked Carter and shot Reagan because... Jodie Foster??? Dude, you were never gonna get that one. Sorry. Not in the cards.

Now, think about the fact that people are demonstrably less sane than they've ever been.

Scary, right?

Right here, this is the most galling thing about illegal immigration and the government's tolerance of it, and some Americans' celebration of it.

We ALL know "the rules". If you want to travel internationally, you need a passport, and possibly a visa. Usually it all depends on where you go. Every country, including this one, has rules for entry, and typically you have to enter the country through a port of entry, and you have to show an immigration or customs official a passport/visa, and their job is to make sure you are legit and aren't going to cause people in the country you are visiting problems as they have enough problems of their own.

Apparently people in this country don't understand what a passport means. Yes, in this country, if you are a citizen, it is rather easy to get a passport. But in truth a passport is the State Department's way of telling the officials of other countries something to the effect of "yeah, he's one of our citizens, and yeah, he/she is cool." Meaning, the citizen holding the passport isn't a hardened criminal or at least has not been convicted of any crimes in the United States, and can/should be a very low threat to the country being visited.

All of this is very basic, yet it is beyond the grasp of millions of Americans and unfortunately therefore beyond the grasp of the representatives and governments those citizens elect.

Most importantly, colleges no longer teach critical thinking - they teach students to mouth received platitudes.

For example, if you take an "energy economics" class at a modern American university, there is a 99.9% chance that you will be taught that it is imperative that we move to 100% renewable electrical generation as quickly as possible. This is taught as a received fact - not as a position to be defended.

The counter-argument that there are significant operational problems with a 100% renewable electrical system, and that it might be a lot more efficient to have a significant amount of fossil fuel generation, is simply not presented. Students have no idea how to respond if someone raises that argument.

448 LOL. I'm on several Oregon environmental organization's e-mail lists, and they are announcing a big rally tomorrow to protest the fact that the Republican Oregon state senators continue to stay out of state, denying the D's the opportunity to pass their cap-and-trade bill, with no possibility of referring the cap-and-trade bill to voters.

Some senators were in Washington (across the river from Portland), but got worried that the left-wing governor of Washington might simply order Washington state police to illegally kidnap the senators, and forcibly return them to Oregon. So, they're probably all in Idaho...

I politely criticized a Millennial acquaintance about how his generation never rebelled. Most young generations rebel, but not these guys. They just took what the teachers shoved down their throats and asked for more. Then they turned on the teachers for not being nutty enough. He said we "perfected it". I guess it is like going from opium to Heroin.

The senators might be using their real names at hotels, their cars have known license plate numbers, etc.

Not until Oregon cap-and-trade is presented as a "regular" bill, instead of an "emergency" bill.

A "regular" bill allows the bill to be referred to a vote of the people, given enough petition signatures. An "emergency" bill does not.

The D's are doing this, because they know that cap-and-trade will lose by a sizable margin if the people vote on it, so they are trying to evade that.

But if various Texans such as myself put up such Republican Senators from Washington, we can give them an unassailable shelter from their Demoncrat majority.

'Cause I rather doubt that the legal machinery in Texas would produce the results desired by the Washington democrats, in time to make any difference at all.

Canada, Spain, France, Japan, Russia, etc. What I don't get it why most Americans do not know these basics. Immigration, legal and illegal, is a complicated subject. For whatever reason, most Americans have not been taught the most basic of concepts and they have no desire to learn them themselves. As far as I know, the only countries that do not control their borders are failed states and even they do it in other ways, worse ways.

Posted by: Quint at June 25, 2019 12:53 AM (n13/j)

Absolutely. Although I'd argue you could have stopped typing at "thinks" and still be very accurate.

I have a friend who is to the Left of Marx. A true limousine Leftist. She feels painfully for the plight of the "migrants" YET when she traveled internationally recently she did all those things I described above: went through ports of entry, saw Customs officials and presented them her passport, and the whole thing. Yet she believes at the exact same time people need to be allowed to stream into the country and that the border can and should be as innocuous as the county lines I cross on my commutes.

I also have Catholic friends who are outraged that the United States has things like border controls, immigration laws, and ports of entry, and so on. They got very angry with me when I pointed out that the Vatican isn't even a member of the Schengen Pact, and posted the requirements for visiting the Vatican - which, as I recall, is a walled city with six gates.

Posted by: Catch Thirty-Thr33 at June 25, 2019 01:41 AM (mEn6y)

469 Most importantly, colleges no longer teach critical thinking - they teach students to mouth received platitudes.

Posted by: The ARC of History! at June 25, 2019 01:02 AM (I2/tG)

This is perhaps the biggest key: not teaching critical thinking. And it's not new. Back in my day, I had a psychology textbook (I hated that class) which, in a portion, praised the French medical system. In all their praise, they did not once mention cost, they did not once mention the abysmal pay of their doctors, and they did not mention once the state of the French nanny state, or the fact that the country is ossifying before our eyes.

The next semester I took a sociology class and the book had an article that heaped praise on Canada's medical system, and once again, it mentioned nothing about the expense, or the wait times, the fact that if doctors/nurses go on strike, how ruinous it is for people's appointments, and so forth. Now, I knew of these things, so I could read stuff like this with a critical eye. But what of those around me?

I get very jealous and angry with myself sometimes reading the Sunday book thread, when I see so many Moron authors touting their third, fourth or fifth books when after 15+ years I've only got one and a short story to my name.

Yeah, we are dumb but rich. We are unwelcoming but have welcomed more than any other land. We are the worst nation but must allow everyone to come here. The thing is, we have already been welcoming. We have already gladly allowed major changes to the populace over many decades. We allow everyone to become American but few countries do the same.

The most positive line you can say about Paris is that though not everyone came become French, anyone can become Parisian. That line has been used in many other countries as well. They say it as a positive. But we allow anyone who takes the steps to be an American. That is a strange idea in many other nations.

The US is a welcoming country and we have been a welcoming country. The crazy anti-American culture we have today always wants to start right now. Forget how welcoming we have been, that does not matter. What matters is this day right now. We are horrible for having borders for some reason.

As I have said before, these people need to sue their teachers and even cast some side eye to some of their parents. Way too many are ungrateful as hell and got through school learning nothing positive about their nation. Sure question authority, but being a jagoff is just being a jagoff.

From all I know, that is very true about Japan. An American can move there, learn their habits, love their nation, but never be Japanese. Very few shit on Japan, China, or Russia for this.
Not so for this land. America is more of an ideal than a race. Yes people don't understand how homogeneous we were even in the late 1800s and later. The free states prior to the Civil War were 98.8 percent white. That is a high number. But we are welcoming if you have the intrepid spirit. This is who we are.

Those that constantly crap on America because they read one pop pseudo-history book piss me off. From what I can tell, the biggest anti-Americans are home grown types who got cheated educationally and developmentally somewhere along the way.

I am not sure I fully understand this. The Soviets had a lot of land and resources as do many African countries. Some of the wealthiest nations per capita are small, densely populated, and short on resources. Some examples are Luxembourg, Denmark, Netherlands, etc. I could cheat and offer up Monaco and Singapore but i think we should stick with real nations.

Again. I am just wondering what his actual point is. I would think in general you would want resources and land for sure but I don't think those are the only factors to success.

Carter was a horrible president. But it was sad to me when we stopped electing veterans and war heroes. When Clinton took out GWB and Dole, the die was cast. We had a long line of veteran presidents since WW2 and the only one we have had since Clinton was W. *
* I am actually not sure if W is considered a veteran by the US government or not. This has nothing to do with the Rather BS controversy. I know W served his country but this nation is very particular about the term "veteran" In fact, it is a legal term and the term demands legal obligations from the government. As far as I know, those who serve in in Guard or Reserves, but are not activated for service other than training are not considered to be veterans. The exception is those who served at least 20 years. The VA says he was a veteran so I guess he was. I am not calling him out. It is just a kind of weird topic when it comes to Guard and Reserves.

--------------
I agree that being a veteran or war hero does not make someone a great president. Hell Grant for on was one of our greatest war heroes and a poor president. But I stand by my opinion that when we stopped favoring veterans and went for Clinton and Obama types, it was not to our good.
As to your comment about NG/Reserve, well, that's a slap in the face,
given how many Guard and Reservists were activated for Desert

My comment about the NG/reserve was a slap in the face to no one. I stated a fact that those who serve in the NG/Reserve and are NOT activated (for I think 180 days) other than for training are not considered veterans by this nation. I did not say that my opinion was they are not veterans, I stated a fact that this country does not consider them Veterans for benefits purposes. I am well aware that NG units served in combat. Hell the famous unit from Saving Private Ryans, the 29th division was NG and is still to this day.

The requirements for veteran status for guard and reserves is to have been activated for service other than training for I believe 180 days, or serving for 20 years. I made no comment about this requirement whatsoever. I personally find it odd that someone can serve in the reserves for 19 years and not be considered a veteran while someone can serve on active duty for a 2 year hitch and be a veteran even if they never saw combat. These days there are lots of wars but in the late 70s through the 90s, not so much.

There are tons of links on the web if you want to research the subject. He is just one.

564 true story:

i served in the CA ARNG and USAR for a total of 20 years, 22 months, and some very odd days.

TIS was 83-03.

it took until 2006 to convince the CA ARNG that i had 20 good years, and deserved retirement, eventually.

it took until 2016 to convince the VA that i was a veteran, entitled to care for my service connected injuries, due to the 181 day rule they (services and VA) have for determining "veteran" status.

it's a FUBAR system and, it would seem, designed to be that way.

which makes Congress the villain.

By your own logic, we should all be aching to vote for Buttygig. Buttygig hates the country, is a Maoist (given his penchant for wanting to airbrush people from history he doesn't like, like TJ), and believes we are all better off if America has a government with absolutely unlimited power with him, of course, at the top. His beliefs as professed in word and deed on the campaign trail indicates that when he took his commissioning oath, he did indeed do so WITH mental reservation and purpose of evasion, and he had NO intention of supporting and defending the document he swore to support and defend.

But no matter. Buttygig is a veteran so we all need to vote for him. Right?

you seem to be looking for a fight. The problem is I am not. I will answer you for the others who read here. My point was that I think we were a better nation when we favored military veterans. You can see that a long line of presidents after the Civil War pretty much had to be vets. The same thing happened after World War 2.

In general we were a better nation in my opinion when we lauded national service and had a national pride. Though GWHB had many issues, his background vs Clinton could not have been more stark. The nation made the choice, in part, to forget the war hero stuff and go with the boomer lefty. I think we would have been better off with Bush and even Dole. But for me, it is more a comment on the nation's values than on the individuals who ran. We once valued military service more and more people cared about it than they do now. Sure, part of that was a reflection of the time. There was a time when more served than today. Today those that serve are a tiny percentage of the populace.

I support liberty minded small government types politically. I am not going to vote for a vet who is a socialist statist. But we were a better nation imo when we put foward national heroes vs community organizers. YMMV.

Interestingly, the raw numbers do show an annual increase. But the rate of increase is beginning to flatline.

Just like EVERY casino in Maryland is showing an increase in income.

EXCEPT, the Horseshoe casino, at the edge of the city, and the next one closest to the city.

AND the two properties which make up the pavilions for the famous Inner Harbor just went into receivership several weeks ago.

Nah.

City murders are almost exclusively black.

Some outliers, but almost always a black victim.

MS-13 killings are out in the counties.

YouTube has already taken down the Veritas video on the Google plans to manipulate the search results to get the desired political agenda they want, in time for 2020.

A Google employee smuggled a secret Google document that defines their modification and manipulation of search results for political gain.

The MSM is completely ignoring it, Drudge has highlighted it.

Here it is on bitchute. Just watch the first two minutes to see this woman that works for Google. She IS the Borg. She is, IMO, dangerous.

True, but this is more insidious. Google owns most of the search traffic, and they have created a department of people that eliminate videos they disagree with politically (PragerU? really?) and manually manipulate search results, and later incorporating that manipulation into their own AI.

The video tells of the biased choices they make, which are what we would expect are against making conservatives look good in any way.

They give an example of Hillary email search results - surprise! - they don't come up.

They are actively acting as a publisher, when they claim to be instead a platform.

Congress has to act (yeah, right) or any semblance of open and free speech will be history.

Google is truly evil.
