The Quotes of The Day

Quote I

You're indeed fortunate none of the roadworkers going about their jobs were injured, or killed ... that could easily have occurred. It's mindless driving conduct on your part, whichever way you look at it. Judge Richard Russell

Quote II

"Grid girls belong in Formula 1 as much as the cars do. Only an idiot sees a beautiful woman as a problem. The rest of the people love it." Roy van Alast
H/T redc1c4

Quote III

“It sounds to me like he is looking for some way to take offense. There is no way we won’t address this problem appropriately. We have in the past and we will again in the future.” Sen. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY)

Quote IV

“That’s a very good question. The hope is that over time they can become capable of governing.” Jared Kushner

There is a special place in hell for this woman. Woman drowns her elderly golden retriever.

A heartless New Hampshire woman pushed her elderly golden retriever into a lake and did nothing as the helpless dog drowned, according to a new report.

Nancy Bucciarelli, 66, was walking 11-year-old Bailey around Naticook Lake in Merrimack on June 8 when the pooch became winded, local station WMUR reported.

Bucciarelli allegedly shoved the already weakened Bailey into the lake from a dock at Wasserman Park — leaving the dog to struggle in the water.

Witnesses came to Bailey’s aid, but it was already too late, Merrimack Police Chief Denise Roy told the station.

Don't worry folks it's only a misdemeanor.

Son-of-A-Bitch. Now I'm regretting the boot from Twitter.

According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, President Trump plans to live tweet the first Democrat presidential debate. Because everyone and their momma’s dog has decided to run for president in the Democrat primary this year, the debate will be spread across two days with 10 candidates participating each day.

That should be a hoot.

How can The ONT delicately dance around this issue? Premeditated homicide is wrong. Sharing a video of a mass murder is downright disgusting. What happens when you don't have a First Amendment right? Serious jail time in New Zealand.

Philip Arps was sentenced in a New Zealand court today for sharing video of the Christchurch massacre, a terrorist attack on two mosques that killed 51 people on March 15. Arps, who has compared himself favorably to Adolf Hitler’s deputy Rudolf Hess, pleaded guilty to two counts of sharing the video and received a sentence of 21 months in prison for sending it to roughly 30 people.

Arps told the judge overseeing his case that video of the bloody massacre was “awesome,” according to New Zealand news outlet RNZ and he even asked one person to add crosshairs and a body count graphic to “make it more fun.” Dead children are plainly visible among the many bodies of victims in the video.

The terrorist attack was livestreamed on Facebook for 17 minutes before being taken down by the social media giant, but the video circulated online for days as companies like Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube scrambled to delete it.

New Zealand’s top government censor quickly moved to classify the Christchurch video as “objectionable” in the wake of the terrorist shootings allegedly committed by Brenton Tarrant, a 28-year-old Australian national who pleaded not guilty to the murders last week. New Zealand has a common law tradition of free expression, but the government can declare certain controversial materials as illegal to own and distribute.

The problem with "Controversial" is the old slippery slope.

Becoming a doctor is a difficult. I can't imagine being a pediatric physician working with children who have cancer. Dr. Alastair McAlpine asks terminally ill children what really matters in life.

Dr. Alastair McAlpine spends every day caring for children with life-threatening and life-limiting illnesses, working for the non-profit organization PaedsPal.

McAlpine recently decided to ask his terminally-ill patients what they enjoyed most in life and then shared their answers on Twitter.

In a tweet, he explained: “For an assignment, I asked some of my terminal pediatric palliative care patients what they had enjoyed in life, and what gave it meaning. Kids can be so wise, y’know.”

All of these children are between the ages of four and nine years old. Even though they are young, they still managed to hit the nail on the head when it comes to what makes life worth living.

Marketing genius?

In a marketing gimmick that was almost definitely conceived after several bong rips, Kraft has officially introduced a new product that it calls “Salad Frosting.” It is — spoiler — ranch dressing, packaged in a festive squeeze bag. In a release, Kraft calls it “a match for dinnertime bliss.” In our mind, Grub Street calls it “the logical conclusion of the American Experiment.”

As usual, the Left is silent.

Iran’s foreign minister reaffirmed last week his country's right to execute people for homosexual behavior.

Mohammad Javad Zarif defended the practice of killing gay people by saying that “these are moral principles concerning the behavior of people in general,” in an interview with German magazine Bild .

After the comments became public, the Jerusalem Post contacted U.S. ambassador to Germany Richard Grenell, who said that such behavior from Iran “[violates] basic UN principles. UN members should agree with the Declaration in order to be members. Criminalizing homosexuality violates the Declaration, plain and simple.”

I wonder what the tax cheating Congress critter from Minneapolis has to say?

Quite the dilemma, if you are a gun owner. Do you choose to use medically approved marijuana for a medical condition? Or choose to own firearms?

As more states legalized medical marijuana — let alone recreational use — the Congress will face more pressure to ease federal laws prohibiting gun ownership for those who use weed.

Across the country, states have incrementally embraced legalizing medical marijuana despite its federal classification as a Schedule 1 controlled substance. Federal law enforcement has largely looked the other way, deferring to state legislatures when it comes to medical cannabis — but not when it comes to guns, which are illegal to buy under federal law if you use marijuana.

What's going on in the Dominican Republic?

For decades, the Dominican Republic has been one of the most popular spots in the Caribbean for Americans to visit. Its proximity to the U.S. mainland, crystal clear waters, and an absolute glut of all-inclusive resorts have made it the obvious choice for millions of U.S. travelers — to the tune of 2.1 million visitors in 2017 alone. But a recent spate of mysterious tourist deaths on the island has would-be visitors rethinking whether it’s safe to go to the Dominican Republic.

There haven’t been any clear answers yet as to why these deaths have occurred and whether they are related. Toxicology reports are out in all cases (with the FBI helping). Meanwhile, Dominican officials insist it’s still safe to visit the island — but with at least seven deaths and dozens of cases of extreme illness on record, it makes sense for holidaymakers to be a little wary.

Why do dogs possess the Paedomorphic facial expression? Why do dogs look sad?

Humans domesticated dogs about 30,000 years ago. Since then, we've worked with them, hunted with them, played with them, and come to rely on them for companionship. And, in the process, we've bred them for everything from general cuteness to the ability to guard and fight for us. Figuring out who's manipulating whom and who's getting more out of the relationship is a hopeless task.

But that doesn't mean that some aspects of the changes dogs have undergone aren't amenable to study. After studying the facial muscles of dogs and wolves, a US-UK team of researchers has now found that dogs have two muscles that wolves mostly lack. These muscles control the movements of the face near the eyes, and the researchers suspect that the muscles' presence helps the dogs make a sad-eyed face that we find appealing.

Is AOC a thin skinned little bitch person?

The freshman New York Democrat “unleashed her lawyer” on Latino activist Ramon Ramirez, a former campaign aide who wrote a book about her improbable 2018 win, the New York Post reported.

Ocasio-Cortez defeated an incumbent Democratic, former Rep. Joseph Crowley, who was ranked 4th in the party at the time.

But the democratic socialist isn’t looking to share the wealth, as she had her lawyer send a cease and desist letter to Ramirez for a self-published memoir titled, “Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: The Democrats’ Surprise.”

The cease and desist letter claims Ramirez’s efforts, which includes a second book he has written, according to the Post, “seek to profit off the Congresswoman’s name and likeness, without her involvement or permission.”

AT&T too big to fail? It is in the process of cutting jobs. Lots of jobs.

About two years after Dallas-based AT&T championed corporate tax cuts and pledged they'd lead to job creation, the company plans to cut nearly 2,000 jobs, according to the telecom union that represents its workers.

Officials from Communications Workers of America say AT&T began notifying employees Thursday about the upcoming cuts. It will eliminate 1,880 jobs by the end of September in 23 states, including Texas and Oklahoma, the union said. The cuts are aimed at technicians, such as those who do home installations or lay fiber optic cable.

The universal blood type? O. Now all types can be converted to O. Tonight's Feel Good Story of The Day.

Researchers from the University of British Columbia have figured out how to convert blood types A, B and AB into the universal Type O, which all patients can receive in a transfusion regardless of their own blood type.

Enzymes can be used to convert A and B type red blood cells into O type, however, the enzymes available to date have not worked well on whole blood.

That was until scientists considered looking inside the human gut.

"The human gut is covered with mucins, large glycoproteins presenting a variety of glycan structures on their surface, including those of the blood group antigens," said Peter Rahfeld, a researcher at the University of British Columbia.

Well, dang, tuned in too late for the big announcement, but we're watching the beginning now.

Two observations:

A.

Seems t'me that Donald J. Trump is having the time of his life.

2.

I didn't see another bit of yellow* in that whole stadium, which lit up with that glorious (as in, sending off rays) canary-dress of Melania's.

129 Rum and Coco Cola is one of the earliest recordings of the Bo Diddley beat.

It may be the earliest. The song is a remake of a calypso tune, and the original does not have that beat.

Right after it was recorded, it was common on a lot of blues and R&B recordings. The theory I like best is that it comes from the "Shave and a haircut" rhythm. That was popular before the war, and became more popular since it was used (according to a couple wartime biographies I have read) to identify Americans since only an American would know how to end the first beats.

I have followed wikipedia on this subject over the years, and last time I looked they did not even have the shave and a haircut connection. I just checked now and they have added it. They mention the Andrews sisters song, but don't give it credit for being first recording. They credit some vague statement about other songs.

I like the Andrews sisters origin story since they played a lot of USO shows and could have picked it up then.

That's not how any of this works.

These people want to land there, knowing they'll be processed out, and sent out into El Norte and never bothered again. If they come to Denver, they're even allowed to beat their wives, drive drunk, etc. without having it count as a felony like it does for dirty Americans.

https://gatesofvienna.net/2019/06/sad-news-and-a-blogging-hiatus/

That has been one of the very best blogs on the internet for many years. It mostly focuses on European politics and the Islamic invasion. You really can't find that information in many other places.

It was run by her and her husband, Baron Bodissey. I've read and commented there in the past, but less so in recent years. Nothing wrong with their blog; I've just been cutting back on the places where I read and comment. I've been running out of things to say, and sometimes the news is just too depressing to deal with.

I never met either one of them, but I've been tearing up quite a bit today since I heard about it. RIP, Dymphna.

Man, I had to run out for an emergency at work. Didn't have a car, didn't want to bother with a cab/reimbursement, so I took a crosstown bus for the first time in awhile, into Denver proper. I saw the bus had a BIG "Vote Blue 2020" sticker in the front, in a most-definitely-not-a-paid-ad part of the bus.

I figured the driver was just a lawbreaking asshole, because it's a government agency vehicle.

On my way back from the City & County, that bus had it too. The union goons must be giving these out to the goon drivers, and the goons at RTD feel sufficiently emboldened to permit this in the new Commie Denver.

161 What kind of soulless creature can do that to an animal that was their companion for many years.

A couple years back I adopted a (very) senior cat who had been dumped on top of a pile of snow and ice heaped up by the snowplows downtown after the last of four heavy January-into-February snowstorms. The vet said that she had obviously been someone's pet and had most likely been on the snow pile for at least five days, maybe a full week. She was hungry, but staying where she was probably saved her from being run over trying to cross a very busy street. She was pulled off the snow pile by a friend of mine who volunteers at the same cat shelter where I help out. I named her The Pirates Queen in honor of a college bud who lives in The Burgh (Queen Yinzer was not an option).

I knew I wouldn't have her for too many years because she was somewhere between 12 and 14 years old (vet's estimate) when she was dumped-- but I spoiled her to the hilt for the 3-1/2 years I did have her. She was sweet, affectionate, and bonded with my other senior kitteh. Not surprisingly, her favorite napping spot was the heated cat bed in my bedroom.

What kind of soulless creature abandons a cat who had obviously been their pet for many years in that kind of weather? Sadly, I don't think the NH woman who drowned her dog is unique.

238 San Francisco has the highest rate of property crime in the United States. Higher than Detroit. Higher than Baltimore.

One aspect of this is that smash-and-grabs from cars is absolutely rampant in San Francisco - to the point where some people now have signs on their cars begging crooks not to break the car's windows.

This is now migrating to Portland, of course - it used to be that parking your car on the street was problematic, but a security guard for a garage downtown wrote that parking in garages is now no longer safe, either - that his garage now gets hit every other day or so.

The cops do nothing, of course - they tell you to just file a police report online.

Responses to the security guard's post ranged from:

Portland is a big, sophisticated city! Of course your car is going to get broken into! It's just the price of urban life!

You're OK if there is nothing visible in your car! (Several people responded that their windows had been broken, even with nothing visible in your car.)

You're OK if you leave the doors unlocked! (Several people noted that your windows still get broken, and it makes it trivially easy to steal your car - car theft is also rampant in Portland.)

Somebody suggested keeping your car unlocked, and rolling your windows down. (More data is needed.)

One does wonder if there is a breaking point, eventually, and whether Portland and San Francisco will stop electing people who are apologists for criminals. Probably not - virtue signaling is worth having to replace your car windows occasionally for most Portland voters.

So for every drink, the spitty backwash would splash right back down on the grotty wart hole, contaminating it further. The water stank like dead alewives, and tasted worse.

At the public school fountains, I was always afraid some sh!thead would shove me in and bust out my front teeth on the metal spigot thingie.

Posted by: AlaBAMA at June 18, 2019 11:15 PM (pUDQf)

here in Texas it's hard to keep that strip watered and in late summer it's usually yellow and brittle, even if the rest of the yard is good. I had a neighbor that never really tried with hers, it was mainly dirt, and she called it the Gaza Strip.

It never caught on with anybody else, but it always made me laugh.

Fireflies and others use a compound which is dubbed luciferin. Luciferin is oxidized by an enzyme dubbed luciferase. The resulting molecule is produced in an excited state. It relaxes and emits the light. It is about 90% efficient in making light.

They are looking at trying to exploit that for lighting purposes. It would make some very efficient light bulbs.

My kittehs definitely prefer the waterfall type.

The ice trade used to be a YUGE business. A Boston Brahmin by the name of Frederic Tudor became the Ice King of International Ice Trade.

They'd cut up blocks of ice from New England ponds and ship them all over the world.

The military has warehouses of frozen blood in Korea. The water is replaced with glycerol before freezing and is replaced back with water before transfusion.

This process removes all antigens (A and B, as well as others like Duffy and Rh), making the blood even more universal than regular O but costs even more money and must be used within 24 hours.

They get someone inside to pull the top shelf liquor and replace it with something that visually looks the part, but it's not something you want to ingest. Essentially, you have people drinking poorly concocted moonshine which is closer to poison than an adult beverage. The tip off was the couple that died at the same time and was listed as pulmonary embolism(s). The others they list as heart attacks, but disallow proper testing to check for poison.

The Hard Rock hotel, and some of the other ones down there might want to start vetting their employees better. Someone is putting the equivalent of anti-freeze in those little booze bottles found in all the rooms.

Here's an article on Dr. Gorrie's refrigerator:

Basically, he compressed air, then cooled down with water. Which was then expanded back to atmospheric pressure, achieving very low temperature

He made ice with it. He cooled brine down to 26F, which would readily freeze water.

This was patented in 1851, now.

The ice lobby, headed by Tudor was scared to death at the thought of a machine that could make ice. They paid newspapers to ridicule him, and did the equivalent of "deplatforming" him.

453 a situation wherein cops or sheriffs from a "sanctuary" city or State are induced to fire upon or use physical force to prevent ICE or U.S. Marshals from doing their duty.

It has been proposed that Oregon forbid ICE agents from entering courthouses (which are open to the public).

Since the Multnomah County sheriff refuses to cooperate with ICE, ICE has to use riskier tactics to take illegals into custody, like arresting them on the street outside the courthouse.

Technically, all of Oregon is a "sanctuary state", but the rural sheriffs don't appear to have this issue - I'm sure they have ways of 'informally" cooperating with ICE. Thus far, Oregon hasn't been brave enough to do anything about the rural sheriffs ignoring state law.

486 The interesting thing about Spanish is that English has all the sounds Spanish uses, and a bunch extra. Spanish is pretty limited phonologically, and really the only novel sounds to an English speaker is the rolled R, the tap L and R that are pronounced with the tip of the tongue and not the back or middle of the tongue, and of course the alveolar H, the back of the throat H that sounds like you are trying to hurk up some phlegm.

Spanish speakers have bad accents because they can't get their speaking around all the funny diphthongs and liquid consonants and novel-to-Spanish combinations of consonants (like S+T without an initial vowell) that English has, and English speakers don't restrict themselves to just the sounds that Spanish has when they learn Spanish.

Now, Mexicans who grew up speaking Nauhuatl or Mixteco seem to get better accents faster in English, but those languages have sounds that Spanish doesn't have either.

We use water and ammonia. The internal section, the living space, uses water which goes through a liquid-liquid heat exchanger with the external ammonia system.

Well, modern refrigerator mechanisms are pretty well leak-proof. And I could see having some sort of small solid-state ammonia leak detector built into any ammonia-charged appliance, that would sound an alarm if any ammonia began to seep out.

As a point of curiosity, last week, I scrapped out an old deep freeze which had died on me in storage. All the R12 had leaked out. Turned the cooling coils wrapped around the inner shell, and the condenser coils, wrapped around the inside surface of the outer shell, were both made of steel tubing, and they had rusted through in several places.

554 Speaking of refrigeration...

Our $2k LG fridge has been out of commission for a week. Few weeks ago the fridge warmed up to 57 degrees for a couple of days. I unplugged it then plugged it back in, and over a day or so it worked its way back down to 37. Then a week later it went back up to 50+. The freezer section never had a problem. The thing is only 3.5 years old, so out of warranty except for the compressor which has a 10 year warranty.

Called LG and 5 days later a service tech came out. He looked it over, then said it was likely spillage got into the return air duct and froze, restricting air flow to the fridge section. I asked why the problem would come and go and he couldn't come up with a good answer. His remedy was to unplug the fridge for two days to let everything thaw out and clear the air path. Whatever. Paid him ($125 for "dispatch fee" plus $65 for the service call itself) and he left.

Unloaded the fridge into a couple of big coolers, then unplugged it and cleaned the whole thing out. Then I decided to do what the tech could have taken 15 minutes to do while he was here, and removed the air duct assembly. Waddaya know the damper at the bottom of the duct assembly was broken, just hanging limp in the duct opening. It makes perfect sense that the damper which, you know, controls the flow of cold air from the freezer to the fridge, might be the source of our problems, but the tech couldn't be bothered to do a simple check of this part.

Called LG and chewed them out something fierce. Got the usual runaround. They said they'd have their service center call me to send another tech out to fix it. I said don't bother, just send the part & I'll do it myself. They said that'd void the warranty on the compressor. Fine, I said, send a tech. OK, someone will call to schedule the service, what three days would be convenient for you? Gee, I said, let's see, since I don't have a working refrigerator, how about tomorrow, the day after tomorrow, or the day after that? OK, someone will call.

That was Monday morning. By this morning (Tuesday) I still hadn't received a call. So I called back and they told me to expect a call in 24 to 48 hours. Grrrrrrrr. I reminded them that I AM WITHOUT A WORKING REFRIGERATOR AND I HAVE LOST OR WILL LOSE AT LEAST $100 WORTH OF FOOD. "We'll put a rush on it." Right.

So here's Plan B: When they eventually call to schedule the service (which will undoubtedly be several days hence), I'll decline the follow-up service and demand a refund for the initial, worthless service call. I'll order the part I need online ($50 to $160 depending on if there is other damage in the duct assembly, which there may be) and install it myself. Damn the remaining warranty. I already know that if the compressor goes south even under warranty it'll be a minimum of $375 to have LG replace it. I could buy a new compressor for about $250 and I have a friend who's an HVAC tech who could help me replace it. Besides, we'll probably be moving within 5 years and we won't be taking the fridge with us.

Anyway, sorry for the rant, but I'm a little pissed. And I haven't had ice cream since Friday.

I'd say fuck that warranty, and/or fix and don't tell 'em about it. I hate this crap about not fixing things yourself. Fuck that.

Can you fix that damper yourself. Glue and/or duck tape style?

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at June 19, 2019 01:53 AM (f1Vqw)

558 Miklos: I'll give that some thought.

Publius: Yes, I probably could. It would be a temporary fix, as the part of the damper that broke is a bit dainty, and I don't think I can beef it up very much. Plus some little bits of metal also came out of the duct assembly, which I don't think came from the damper, so there could be another damaged component. I'd have to dig deeper. This is why the replacement parts could be anywhere from $50 to $160.

559
What's the model number of that thing, Average Guy? I'm wondering if there's a repair manual or schematic.

Most refrigerators work with this split air system. You have one coil. The brunt of the air flow goes into the freezer, with some shunted off to the fridge.

Now, here's the thing, the thermostat is usually in the fridge compartment. If it weren't getting enough air, the thing would run and run, with the freezer getting very cold, but the fridge part not. But it would run and run.

So that makes wonder if that LG thing is a little different with the temp controls or something.

Posted by: publius, Rascally Rapscallion of a Poperin Pear at June 19, 2019 02:03 AM (f1Vqw)

560 BTW, WRT voiding warranties & DIY repair, I'm generally with you. But I do see the rationale behind it, as a many DIYers can really fuck things up (I'm a home inspector, so I know whereof I speak). But there's absolutely no way replacing this duct assembly can have an adverse effect on the compressor. Besides, I'd already proven that I'm a more competent tech than their "certified" guy.

Posted by: Average Guy at June 19, 2019 02:09 AM (LMcFk)

561
You can run it without the damper, maybe, or rig something temporary, maybe a piece of cardboard or something to block some of the air.

Here, you can get a nice cold fridge, but the freezer temp might get too high.

563 Publius, I haven't found a repair manual or schematic yet, but it basically works as you've described. In fact, prior to the fridge going cattywampus we had noticed that the freezer seemed too cold (rock hard ice cream - ugh!). So, while the fridge was maintaining the proper temperature, the damper must have been only partially damaged, so the whole system was running inefficiently.

Posted by: Average Guy at June 19, 2019 02:17 AM (LMcFk)

-------------------------------

OK, then that's classic. Freezer too cold and fridge no cold enough. The fridge temp control is the actual temperature control, while the freezer control is the baffle/damper adjustment.

You could just try to shove a piece of cardboard or something -- I'd shoot for about 50% airflow -- until you can get it fixed right. You can keep your food cold that way at least.

That split air system makes for some paradoxical behavior. As ambient temperature drops, the freezer will get warmer!

It seems crazy at first, but consider the extreme. Suppose ambient temperature is less than the fridge set point. What will happen? The thing won't run at all, and the freezer would never get below ambient temp.

It must run long enough to keep the freezer cold enough.

You'll notice that behavior if you keep a refrigerator in an unheated area. In winter time, when ambient temp drops low, you'll note the freezer will get warmer.

The solution is to close the baffle to compensate, reducing air flow to the fridge.

I remember that freezer getting warmer in colder weather stumping some highly edmucated types. That's impossible. When they accepted that yes, indeed it happens, they began to wonder about higher order refrigerant effects and etc.

The behavior is quite simple. It's a lesson in assumptions. They didn't know how your basic refrigerator worked, and their assumptions about the givens were wrong.

578 You'll notice that behavior if you keep a refrigerator in an unheated area. In winter time, when ambient temp drops low, you'll note the freezer will get warmer.

---

the alleged reason is that the thing doesn't cycle as much. the thermostat being in the fridge, not the freezer, the freezer just gets the full blast of the AC when it comes on.

if it's in a cold garage, but not freezing cold, the fridge part stays acceptably cold but doesn't run oft enough to give the freezer the kick it needs.

636 So Cal now gives out state IDs and DL to anyone. Effectively rendering the standard ID worthless. Now any real citizen must pay for a READ ID to get a gun permit.

I hope Californicators get what they asked for, good and hard!

640 Just catching up on the pop vs soda comments up thread... my folks called it "soda pop" and I do to this day. I never thought about why until I looked at one of those linguistic maps showing where people say pop, soda or coke... and noticed that central Illinois was right on the line between pop (predominant in the Chicago area) and soda (predominant in St Louis). Anyone else notice this?

642 I've heard both, Secret Square. In N.E. Ohio, it is most-often called "pop", but "soda" and "soda-pop" make their appearances quite frequently.

So a researches in EU found those cotton bags needed to be reused 20k times and paper bags 50 times to be as clean and energy efficient as the plastic bags.

It's fading out, but in the sixties in the greater Boston area it was tonic. Not quinine water, coke and ginger ale and everything else was tonic.

I shared the link to that study with city officials yesterday.

Not that it will change any minds.

I'll admit that this is counter intuitive to me. The inputs on a cotton bag are 20k greater than a single set of plastic bags?
