Netanyahu Renames Golan Heights Town "Ramat Trump," or "Trump Heights"

The Trump name graces apartment towers, hotels and golf courses. Now it is the namesake of a tiny Israeli settlement in the Israel-controlled Golan Heights. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Cabinet convened in this hamlet Sunday to inaugurate a new settlement named after Donald Trump in a gesture of appreciation for the U.S. president's recognition of Israeli sovereignty over the territory.I never woke up today. I've been dead all darned day. So I'm knocking off.
The settlement isn't exactly new. Currently known as Bruchim, it is over 30 years old and has a population of 10 people. Israel is hoping the rebranded "Ramat Trump," Hebrew for "Trump Heights," will encourage a wave of residents to vastly expand it.

While SCOTUS' 5-4 opinion holds that the First Amendment does not apply to private entities that host a public forum (here, public access cable TV), the language used is interesting: "MNN, as a private actor, is not subject to First Amendment constraints on how it exercises editorial discretion over the speech and speakers on its public access channels."
That's the key. "Editorial discretion." That looks tailor-made for some future lawsuit against Big Tech, who insist they do not exercise editorial discretion at all.

Another weird fact: Trump might be related to the man who discovered the Lewis Chessmen. Somebody said a few days ago that his mother was born on that island in 1912 and shared a surname with the man who discovered them in 1831. It's a small island, so they could very well have been related.

We had gone to a family reunion for a week in Estes Park, Colorado, wonderful vacation, and were meandering back home, stopping off at some relatives houses on the way. This was the day to drive across a lot of Nebraska and Kansas, and we ended up in downtown Topeka, near the State Capitol. (Toured it the next day, beautiful!) So we checked in, wife was burned out, laid down, I said I'm gonna go down to the hotel bar, watch some sports, have a drink.
So I go down, and instead of the Rockets game all any TV is showing is this stupid white bronco driving slow mo down the freeway with a million police cars behind it, and we are all like WTF??? After 5 minutes it turned into the most boring, stupid program ever. I wanted Airwolf to swoop down and take out that stupid white bronco with a missile. But no such luck, and so I gave up and went to bed.

Growing up we always heard Jim Thorpe was the greatest multi sport athlete. You mentioned the Majors, do you mean golf? There was a Jim Thorpe who played on the PGA Tour, but he was another guy.

The problem with baseball is that it requires a variety of abilities. You have to be able to run, to throw, and to hit,* each to some reasonable extent. Because of this, baseball players tend to be normal-sized guys, for the most part. There are few 300 lb. players, or 7 foot players, although in recent years the fad has been to find the tallest pitchers possible, in part because baseball guys in general are pretty stupid and much prone to following the herd. (Witness the recent shifting fad; was baseball wrong for 100 years not to shift so much, or is it wrong now?)
Contrast football. How many linemen can even throw a spiral, or catch a pass? Hell, how many DBs can catch passes very well? We used to joke that someone who was fast but had iron hands was a born DB. Place kickers generally can't do shit apart from place kicking. Football encourages great specialization.
* By and large. Pitchers don't generally hit very well, because they're not selected for the super human ability to hit MLB pitching, although many of them hit well at a lower level. In addition, many pitchers don't try very hard because they don't want to run the bases, and they don't get paid for hitting anyway.
And it's possible to be so-so in some category if you're superb in one or more others.

I think that that's absolutely true. The best players on high school teams tend to be pitchers, shortstops, and center fielders.
Having said that, nowadays pitchers at lower levels often never hit, thanks to the !@#$%^ DH rule. We've had a number of minor league pitchers working out at our practice field in the winter/early spring before spring training. I've invited them to come hit with us, but they've never done so, saying they're pitchers.
"Yeah, but what if you go to the NL? Being able to hit, or at least not to bunt like a fruit,* might let you stay in a game longer, and might even help your W-L record."
Crickets. Dumb asses.
* My long-suffering wife is tired of me ranting about pitchers who can't get a bunt down in THREE attempts. If I were an MLB manager, I'd send them down until they could drop 10 bunts in a row in fair territory.

Bo Jackson could have played Basketball as well. He was better than Sanders in both Baseball and Football. Dave Winfield was drafted by the San Diego Padres, The Atlanta Hawks, AND The Minnesota Vikings. He would have done real well in any of those teams.

Mississippi State's right fielder Jake Mangum started out as a pitcher: 8-0 with 4 saves, 66 Ks and a 1.48 ERA in 52 innings as an HS senior. He's now at #4 on the D1 career hits list as of last night with 380.

Elway was a helluva athlete and probably could have plated some baseball, but he would not have been a HOF player.
A lot of those good two-sport players know how to use those crossover skills well. Patrick Mahomes says playing shortstop made those crazy across the body passes almost second nature.

Think. Many were probably the fastest guy on their team, too. But now they're running against Usain Bolt, and compared to him, they look like they're carrying a refrigerator.
I was a banjo hitter who hit in the low .300s in college. Now, that's respectable, but guys who are good enough to make it to MLB hit .500, with a couple dozen dingers per season. That's just a whole different level entirely.

I remember a Cubs game from the 80s. The Cubs had already brought Mitch Williams in to close in the 8th inning. As it turned out, he was due up to bat, and since they didn't want to pull him, bat he did. I never realized what a big guy he was until I saw him hunched over the plate.
This was probably his first at-bat in ages. And what does he do? Knocks it out of the park. I think he was as surprised as anybody.

Winfield was something else. I might argue with you about Sanders vs Jackson at football. They were both elite players. Sanders was likely the greatest shut down corner that ever lived. And some say the term "shut-down corner" is archaic as there have been none since Deion in his prime, so to speak.

I think that Deion was a bit over rated as a CB. He was tall and fast, and most CB's were shorter. He also didn't like to play zone defense, as he just wanted to play man-to-man. And he was a real wussy as a tackler on supporting running plays.
I remember watching him play as a Cowboy, and they ran right at him on one play, and he didn't really want to have anything to do with actually fighting through a block and tackling a running back.

Hitters get to the Majors by practicing hitting constantly. Pitchers aren't gonna go mess with their moneymaker trying to hit each level's better pitching when they should be resting and/or pitching.

Yes and no, I'd say. How many bullpens can you throw? How long would they be? How much running can you do? A pitcher has a lot of time on his hands. Why not spend some of it hitting, or at least bunting?
Now the traditional answer is he may get hurt, but that's rubbish. Nobody gets hurt in BP. The pitches are from a 50-something coach throwing for two hours from 40 feet or so.
