Monsignor Rubén Darío Jaramillo Montoya, Bishop of the Diocese of Buenaventura, wants to use a helicopter for an unusual procedure. To deal with a wave of violence and corruption sweeping over the Colombian port city of Buenaventura, the bishop of the local Diocese has proposed using a Navy helicopter to shower the city in holy water and purge evil. Monsignor Rubén Darío Jaramillo Montoya, Bishop of the Diocese of Buenaventura, plans to perform a mass exorcism in the Colombian city that has seen violent crime and corruption rise to an all-time high. With the support of the National Navy, the representative of the Church wants to use a helicopter to sprinkle holy water over the city in an attempt to get rid of demons. The daring event is scheduled for July 13th or 14th, when Buenaventura hosts its annual patron saints festivities. Oh noes, Global warming is coming for the Cognac business. One of the many marvelous things about baseball...I'll bet that most MLB pitchers were the best hitters on their high school teams. Yet when they step to the plate against major league pitching, it is often an embarrassing four pitch at-bat. I'm not sold on Buchanan being gay. He came of age in the pre-Victorian era, which was known for men having intimate friendships with other men (see Lincoln's letters to some of his young law associates), even some cases of lengthy cohabitation. Hell, even in the height of the Victorian era, the Sherlock Holmes stories were published that had Holmes and Watson sharing an apartment, and no one's called them gay outside of some twisted fanfic sites......I assume. My friend said.
Then again, I suppose the fact that, even in this looser era, Buchanan's contemporaries were making suggestive remarks about his and King's relationships should give one pause. Posted by: Dr. T at June 17, 2019 10:19 PM (Vgw1E) 94

Hawthorne wrote a short biography of Pierce for his 1852 campaign, talking about what a great American hero and leader of men he was, and Horace Mann, who knew both of them, supposedly said, "If Hawthorne writes that, it will be the greatest work of fiction he ever created."
Ooh! American historian putdowns! I have one. Taft appeared at an event and was introduced to the public by New York Senator Chauncey Depew. Depew made his introduction by pointedly observing the President's midsection, and noting that the distinguished statesman was "pregnant with integrity, [and] pregnant with courage." Taft made his way to the podium and waited for the laughter to subside. He then thanked Depew for the introduction, patted his belly, and said, "If it's a girl, I shall call her Integrity. If a boy, Courage. But if it is, as I suspect, nothing more than gas, I'll call it Chauncey Depew." Posted by: boulder t'hobo at June 17, 2019 10:37 PM (ykYG2) 194

I've always enjoyed Manilow's music back when they still had Top 40 hits. (Maybe they still do.) But I think his greatest skill was arranging music and orchestration. His arrangements produced the best Bette Midler albums. Yeah, she's a dipshit but those early albums were wonderful. His albums released after the many hit songs are better than the early stuff. The jazzy albums, the Broadway and big band material. And Paradise Cafe is a masterpiece, IMHO.

One guy was very chrismatic and a leader. Both late 20's. The other was a co leader but very closed off and not interested in explaining his ideology. He was a mechanical engineer. And a True Believer. Both were true believers in the Maoist approach. The rogue river valley crew struck me as Marxists via IRA types. I don't know about the medical diagnosis side of marijuana use, but I've gotta call bullshit on the Ingraham guest who calls it out as a "predictor" (whatever that means) for opioid use. When I was a teenager, I was an extremely heavy user of marijuana. As I got older and had more responsibilities, I cut back more and more until it was gone. I tried opioids during my many injuries, but never got addicted, or even thought of it. I watched a lot of people I knew get pretty sideways on the stuff. Some recovered, most didn't. IOW, I used a lot of weed and had plenty of access to opioids, as a student athlete - and I didn't start abusing those drugs. Posted by: Yudhishthira's Dice at June 17, 2019 10:52 PM (n6XaE) 268

Watching Taylor Swift slowly get possessed by the devil over the course of a decade has been kind of heartbreaking. I was a fan of hers - really - when she started as a bright-eyed country songwriting phenom who just oozed catchy hooks, practiced a ton of personal charity, and stayed the hell out of politics.
Five or so years ago molesting starfucker Lena Dunham decided they needed to be besties (wonder why) and literally stalked her on twitter until it happened. She and her crew of filthy lowlife activists then harangued Swift for staying out of politics and eventually blamed her for Hillary losing in 2016. So now that she's got rich and famous off the Christian conservatives who launched her into the stratosphere, she's fully "woke" and wants to savage them in return. And all she is now is just an uninformed typical hollywood dumbo using her cash and influence to peddle the lies of others... and the light is completely gone from her eyes. She's talking rainbows, but now just radiates misery and darkness. Posted by: ... at June 17, 2019 10:55 PM (uEbPt) 273

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky - composer of Romeo and Juliet, the 1812 Overture, and his three ballets: The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and several wonderful symphonies - but most importantly, a homosexual!
Last season, the conductor of the Oregon Symphony gave a short talk before performing a Tchaikovsky symphony. He talked about Tchaikovsky's music, and his place in the stellar culture of late 19th century Saint Petersburg. Just kidding! He talked about Tchaikovsky being a homosexual, of course. "I've read that the majority of cops never arrest anyone in their careers"
Ideally, cops would be able to defuse the situations they encounter. My grandfather and uncle were military-police, Eritrea (then Hebron) and Northern Ireland respectively. I'm told they both did okay at it. Didn't have to do too many arrests. Once there's an arrest, especially in a shithole like Hebron or Belfast, all the Community Leaders spill out alleging racism or some shit like that. And G-d help us all if a shot is fired. If there's an arrest, something bad happened. Comments about "ugh, paperwork" aside. Posted by: boulder t'hobo at June 17, 2019 10:56 PM (ykYG2) 277

Marijuana is not alcohol. Alcohol is not marijuana. There are populations in which ethanol is known to have a higher than average addictive effect, but otherwise alcohol has a pretty well understood dose related adverse effect on human organ systems. Marijuana is not as well understood, and there are subjects ( people) who will have an adverse result with marijuana, especially as regards neural/behavioral toxicity. THC is not an innocuous substance.

So she demanded to know why I thought it would piss her off, and I (unwisely) said 'because right now everything pisses you off." And so without any self awareness, she yelled "HOW DARE YOU SAY EVERYTHING PISSES ME OFF! THAT PISSES ME OFF!" and then got even madder when I wanted to laugh.

I have a family member who is an extremist ProgCommie. Bitch can't argue a point to save her life (too stupid), has had 3 fucked up marriages - one husband killed himself and the latest baby daddy abandoned her due to his drug addiction - invested her money in a useless bachelor's and eventually an unaccredited useless graduate degree in SJW bullshit and has locked herself into a contract position for the last 4 years that pays a whopping 42k per year. She has no prospects, no retirement, no relationships that matter other than warping her 12 yo kid - who can't wait to ditch her and run. But somehow she feels 100% justified in telling me and everyone else she meets how they should live and what they should think , say and do. Because she is a member of the Big Enlightened Progtard Club you see. Can't afford to eat, pay the rent or feed her kid, but hey -" Social Justice ", you haterz. See that's why I say fuck the homo propaganda about " born that way ". Life is a bunch of choices.Make good ones, time-tested and rational and you can be reasonably happy. Posted by: The ARC of History! at June 17, 2019 11:07 PM (I2/tG) ------- Is this a thing that's happening? Yer fuckin' kidding me. The early Nazi Party was mostly dedicated young kids hanging out at bars. Most of them were SA, uniformed or not. They were students, crooks, maniacs, homos, and any other kind of lost misfit with an inclination toward street violence. Ernst Roehm was a predatory homosexual, and ran an officer corps that reflected that to a certain degree. But when Himmler and Goering sent the SS to destroy the SA leadership, they did it for their own self-enrichment, and to make good on Hitler's promise to roll SA rank-and-file into German uniforms. Roehm may have been the only officer Hitler ever genuinely liked, aside from Heydrich. He only dogged on him for being gay because it was convenient. I can't wait. I'm voting Trump, because I believe a gay man can accept defeat without crying. Stay with it man. The good thing about today is everything is in tune. Old days records played slow/fast and a tuning fork didn't really do it like modern tuners now. You can hear it better now. Also, open tunings opened up a lot for me. Posted by: dartist at June 17, 2019 11:34 PM (K22Va) 364

The Stalin Society of North America defends Stalin from changes that he was anti-ghey:
The fact that homosexuality was criminally sanctioned under Soviet law is something that is often thrown in the face of communists in general, and used to "discredit" Comrade Stalin in particular. Indeed, "Stalin hated gays" is something I've seen posted online numerous times by trots and anarchists. I doubt Stalin ever wrote or spoke a single public word on the matter. In any event, such an accusation is by, its very nature, decontextualized and misleading. What needs to be stated is that Soviet legal and medical opinion on this question was no different than what was generally accepted in the world at large, namely, that homosexuality was a psycho-sexual disorder, a form of mental illness. But not to worry: Today, there is not a single communist worthy of the name who does not whole-heartedly support gay rights. Posted by: The ARC of History! at June 17, 2019 11:55 PM (I2/tG) 393

My experience has generally been that they are just normal peeps who don't live their lives as a GAY PERSON, but being gay is just one of their characteristics.

WTF? Go away, just go away now. Posted by: cfo mom at June 17, 2019 10:07 PM (RfzVr) More fucking bullshit. Back in the 1980's there was a big to-do with the "Lubicon Lake Cree Indian Band" complete with their imported Chicago agitator. They wanted oil royalties from production on their "ancestral lands". I'm putting this all in scare quotes, because there never was such an Indian band. All the Indians involved were originally under one of the existing treaties. Well, the Lubicon turds mostly lived in a town called Little Buffalo, and I passed by there one fine day between Christmas and New Years, riding shotgun seat in the cab of a seismic recording truck (a Ford F600, if you must know, with 4-wheel drive, too). The highway passed right by the garbage dump provided by the Province of Alberta to serve the town of Little Buffalo, and the access to the town itself. We could tell we were getting close to Little Buffalo by all the trash in the ditches on both sides of the road between the dump and the town access road. Lazy, worthless fuckers could even drive 3-4 miles to throw their trash in the dump. It was a hideous mess. So don't blow smoke up my ass about "first nations" being good stewards of the environment. Open tunings are great, there are of course a gazillion different tunes in standard EADGBE tuning, but it's really fun to try drop D, double drop D, DADGAD, etc. Open G and you can soumd like Keef. Open D with a Capo on the 2, instant Open E
Get yourself a Capo for sure. You'll know you're hooked on guitar when you realize you need 2 or 3, to leave them in alternate tunings permanently. Start practicing finger style, Travis Picking. Posted by: Common Tater at June 18, 2019 12:19 AM (opOaq) 429

Make sure the guitar is setup correctly. This means the strings height above the fretboard at the bridge and nut and everything in between is within specs. If too low it will buzz, if too high it is difficult to make the chords. Have it checked out by someone who knows what they are doing, if a guitar has a twisted neck the intonation will be off, and impossible to tune. Check out "ShutUpAndPlay" on YT if you like 60s and 70s classic rock, or even if you don't. Andy is a great instructor. What I've found is some tunes that I thought would be impossible for mere mortals to play, sometimes aren't too bad, particularly. They just soumd like they have a lot going on. Don't get me wrong, they are awesome tunes for a reason, they just aren't as technically demanding as one might think. On the other hand, some pretty basic tunes with just a few chords can be very difficult to pull off well. As in years of practice. Really. Trust Me. It's all about the tone, and the vibe, the feel of a tune when you try to emulate a guitarist, most of the good ones, or maybe famous - have a distinctive tone, and can be recognized right away. Ever notice when someone says "Oh yeah, that song's really easy" they can't play it for shit? Posted by: Common Tater at June 18, 2019 12:56 AM (opOaq) 487

Women die more from heart disease than breast cancer, but heart disease doesn't get the gender identity cred. The world we live in is weird, I don't see how that changes. i was reading about paul sandy, the 18th century english watercolorist and landscape painter (and c0-founder of the royal academy) and came across a review from a contemporary of one of his exhibits, who praised the "limpid light" in his paintings...
hmmm... "limpid"... which led, of course, to "lime and limpid green" from astronomy domino, which led to youtube and the original "piper at the gates of dawn" recording followed by a live performance at the fillmore in san francisco from 1970. this was an hour-long performance recorded for free for a local tv station provided they broadcast it, they needed the publicity. it sounded just like the record and it's to pink floyd's credit that they have always paid so much attention to the quality of their performances. for them, they are secondary to the music, while other bands are the point of the music so they can get on stage and just riff or something., anyways, it's david gilmore in that 1970 video and he wasn't even in pink floyd when the song was first recorded. they were that committed to the verity of the song. but here's my point - gilmore is playing a black stratocaster but it's not the famous "black strat" that featured in nearly all of his recordings and performances. that guitar was bought about a month later when the one in the video was stolen. in any case, check out the video, it's fantastic. and check out the black strat and all the other guitars from gilmore's collection being sold at christies in new york on june 20. my proustian story. re breast cancer and the NFL.
I have no problem with the NFL raising awareness. If that is their pet project, fine, good on them. But for some reason women are more afraid of breast cancer than heart disease though some estimates say heart disease is 5 times as deadly. And polls show women are more afraid of breast cancer than heart disease. Considering that we are in a media driven society, it stands to reason people are affected by what they see pushed on tv and the the net. Again, of course we have to cure breast cancer. But do our media betters need to give the real facts so people don't overlook heart disease? here are some links from some sites no one every called conservative. self.com https://tinyurl.com/y3eg5v8s webmd https://tinyurl.com/yxm72s68 Posted by: Quint at June 18, 2019 01:22 AM (n13/j) 499

Would not a go fund me type campaign work with conservatives if the details were right? The alternative is we will have to hear every few days about the latest normal getting deplatformed or demonetized. As if big tech cares about that. I get a lot of people think the answer is regulation, that the left has already won. Fine, but with that we will always be playing from behind and regulation is against our nature. Again, I didn't say compete with them or take them on, i said create an alternative. Hell, this site is an alternative, it has a lot of influence right? Why can't someone create an alternative so when people like get deplatformed they can at least post their thoughts somewhere? Hey, I my real answer is to shut it all off, I think social media is the problem, not the solution. But since most everyone else thinks otherwise, why not have alternatives? It cost money, I get it. Some fake meat company selling a few million in product is now worth almost 10 billion. They were nothing a couple years ago. They might be not much a couple years from now but don't tell me things can't grow. Posted by: Quint at June 18, 2019 01:57 AM (n13/j) 526
I need to look back. Thank you. Here is one of my ideas and maybe someone else who writes can tell me...just spitballing.
What I'm thinking is a way to make any blog like Twitter/Facebook...make them communicate with each other. Again just ballparking things out ... if pundit could share a post with ace and vice versa...we have the blogrolls...they are like a friend list...so maybe on the backend ...say ace and cobs...they can see the things they are shared and can pickup up those shares to automatically blog about and reshare. Now say I start a new blog and write a few posts. Then I think, "Notice me, Sen Pai" and I send a "friend request" from my interface to @ace.mu.nu ... digging into the details...thats a form post or ajax request to aces server. He's running a software that can here my requests. And he picks it up ...well... in his back end. lol . Maybe a social protocol for any site. A way for any sites to friend and share with each other independent of any central authority. As a protocol...an API...it could be implemented in anyway. So a REST API for sharing between blog sites. You see where I'm kinda headed? Posted by: David Prince at June 18, 2019 01:59 AM (JkygK) 527
"525 Would not a go fund me type campaign work with conservatives if the details were right? "
No. You'd have nearly as much luck trying to GoFundMe enough cash to land on the moon. Standing up enough capacity to take even 10% of their share - or to deal with 10% of their share in the form of new users - is a vast undertaking. Part of the cost is because the effort is susceptible to deplatforming. As has been noted above, look what happened to Gab. Good luck even getting a crowdfunding site to actually let you try and raise the money without getting banned for something or other. Good luck getting bank loans, or site permits from local government. Good luck finding enough professionals willing to risk their entire careers on this - go to work for an effort like this and you will never be hire-able among mainstream silicon valley corps again. Your observation on growth is primarily pertaining to company valuation via stock. That doesn't mean the value is real, or that they necessarily have access to any of that value for cash flow purposes. Posted by: lurker (the other one) at June 18, 2019 02:05 AM (67XdO) 528
People who have less control over their server might not be able to implement. Think blogger.
But, maybe a plugin for wordpress would work. That covers a lot of ground. The security on it would be the thing if I went outside that framework. I think the Army of Davids could save us, but in my opinion we need true peer to peer to peer to peer and eliminate the central server problem entirely. I do fear, as someone upthread mentioned, that DNS is a problem but that could be solved with an alternate DNS system. Ports can be blocked, but you could rotate ports. I should look at what the Chinese dissidents are doing. This subject is of great interest to me...how to avoid the gatekeepers of teh intertoobs no matter who or what they are. A tenured professor works what...6 hours a week tops? How about a college student? And we know how much government "workers" work. So it would be nice if we had some deadbeat conservatives with time on their hands and some motivation to destroy the left. Farfetched... Posted by: David Prince at June 18, 2019 02:11 AM (JkygK) 532
A lot of you also don't understand what is going on on some other parts of the internet right now. Sites farther to the right of Ace are getting obliterated left and right.
The hosts are cancelling services, ISP's are blocking access, you name it. It's happening at an alarming rate. Find some sort of distributed solution and the same forces will crush the higher profile nodes. I'm not saying don't try; we have to try and keep the lines of communication open. But ultimately it's not going to solve the problem; leftist big tech needs to be defeated/expelled, or forced to bake the cake. Posted by: lurker (the other one) at June 18, 2019 02:12 AM (67XdO) 533

Re moving to more conservative/normal areas:
These days there is Poland, Italy, and a few other that seem to be more on the conservative swing. I am not sure about Poland's modern history but Italy for sure has had lefty governance in the recent era. Australia has had a decent conservative run but they don't have many of our rights. Britain just a couple of years ago voted for Brexit, but as left as they are, does it even matter to us these days? It is still a good thing, but if they are independent and socialist-statist, will the independence mean that much to us? It is possible they could do more good in the EU. If you want to live abroad AND CAN PULL IT OFF (it is not that easy for most) then go for it for sure, seize the day!. But if you are just looking to get out from under the progressive statist bubble, the play is to move to a deep red area of the USA. Whenever I have had my fill of the blue bubble, I get out and I am renewed. It is amazing what time with normals can do to lift your spirits. Maybe the left will win at the Federal level, it happens. But if you are living in a place where at least you are free to say your piece, including liberals, it makes life a lot better. It is like it used to be, and when I say used to be, I mean a couple decades ago. Posted by: Quint at June 18, 2019 02:52 AM (n13/j) 555

Was Shiloh the Civil War battle that had the same casualties as Waterloo?
Posted by: Aetius451AD at June 18, 2019 04:09 AM (ycWCI) It was probably Gettysburg. I think they were both over 50,000 casualties though I had to check Waterloo on Wiki. The line that always stuck with me about Shiloh was that it had more casualties than all American and Colonial American wars til that date combined. And since Shiloh was the first major battle of the war, with major losses, it was an eye opener. Posted by: Quint at June 18, 2019 04:19 AM (n13/j) 567
A pet peeve I have is that people still get casualties mixed up with killed. I recall hearing on many occasions that as many people died at Gettysburg as in the entire Vietnam War. Gettysburg had over 50,000 casualties but not 50,000 deaths. This is a common misconception. Even the modern movie "Remember the Titans" has a scene where Denzel Washington says over 50,000 died at Gettysburg.
I am not bothered that people mix up complicated terms but it is odd that a major motion picuture would push such a fallacy. The dead at Gettysburg was more like 10,000, though they were very stringent and did not count people who died of wounds a few days after the battle. Posted by: Quint at June 18, 2019 04:25 AM (n13/j) 568

Posted by: Skip at June 18, 2019 04:27 AM (BbGew) I think it has changed a bit over the years but i can't tell you how. In the Civil War, a guy who was mortally wounded and died a few days after the battle was normally not listed as KIA for that battle. My guess is they would count that now but I don't know how it works. It would seem a grim and pointless endeavour these days. Posted by: Quint at June 18, 2019 04:31 AM (n13/j) 570

The worst thing is watching a historical movie when you have in depth knowledge of the subject. The ones that kill me are the movies about the O.K. Corral, Doc Holliday, and Wyatt Earp. It shocked me to realize that Tombstone was likely the most accurate film on the subject ever made. Ok, the Kostner film was probably more accurate but it was a bore. The previous Hollywood stuff, including classics like "My Darling Clementine" were just dreck on the history front. These guys didn't even try. Posted by: Quint at June 18, 2019 05:03 AM (n13/j) 579

If you are saying have them take core liberal arts classes at community college, I am all for that. Some of my best profs were at a community college. My worst teachers were TA's at a major university. When I went to school, they didn't require SJW indoctrination classes. My guess is the lefty Universities require these even for transfer students but that is just a guess. My play would be to only support kids if they went to a conservative school. So I go to the ATM this morning to get some cash and Wells Fargo decided this is the time too remind me with a short video to support Gay pride and this is the 50th anniversary of Stonewell.
WTF? I just want some cash, not a PC lecture. I didn't think Wells Fargo was on board the SJW train. Good way to piss me off and consider changing banks but I'm thinking they all are supporting Gay Pride. I did notice this about the only marketing material they have that doesn't feature mostly, or any minorities. Odd. Why leave blacks and Hispanics out of the celebration? It seem that everyone gets to be very specific about the sexuality with the exception of straight people. I guess I stopped caring about what people do to and with each other years ago. I care about how you take care of yourself and your family. Using your gayness to try to take money out of my pocket is just a marxist as using your color to try to take money out o my pocket.
