Pussification Continues Apace, Part Deux: Electric Boogaloo

My daughter lives with me and owns a gun. Can I kick her out?

This week, I discovered that my intelligent, hard-working, responsible 24-year-old daughter (who lives with me) is a gun owner! And it’s not a normal gun, either — it is a 40-caliber semi-automatic, and she has hollow-point bullets to go with it.

Amy, this is the kind of weapon a criminal would possess!
…..
I love my daughter and would be so sad for her to move into a place that she would hardly be able to afford, but now I have to lock my bedroom door at night because I don’t know what she’s going to do.

Locked door ain't gonna do much against a .40 Skippy. The answer is almost as idiotic as the question.

Don't tell him about this guy: Meet “The Most Armed Man In America” Who Has Enough Weapons To Supply A Small Army

That site, TooPanda, has some amusing stuff, but OMG the Engrish! Like, for example, from this article: 10 Most Dangerous Neighborhoods In America Stated By FBI

This is their entry for one of the two neighborhoods in Baltimore they mention, over by the Edgar Allen Poe House:

We’re miserable to state that the distressing scene painted on indicates like The Wire and Homicide: Life on the Street is grounded as a general rule. For every 100,000 individuals, the area by one means or another makes 9,379 rough violations.

I think it translates as “We're unhappy to report that scenes from TV shows like The Wire and Homicide are based in reality. The violent crime rate for the city is 9379 crimes per 100,000 residents”, but it's hard to tell. Frankly, while that ain't a great neighborhood, I'd have no qualms about being there during the day, and there are many worse ones at night.

Finding America at a Back-Roads Gas Station

College Student: My Generation Is Blind to the Prosperity Around Us

Every word of that is true, and what's more, it's intentional. When history recounts the second half of the 20th century and the first half of the 21st, our failure to root out the Gramscian viper at our bosom will be our greatest shame.

The scooter carnage in America's cities

Cultural Tragedy

The Day the Music Burned

Huge fire on the Universal Studios backlot destroyed almost 200K master recordings a decade ago, and nobody really talks about it. That's a huge chunk of America's 20th century musical heritage, gone forever. Among the recordings listed as destroyed is Jackie Brenston and His Delta Cats’ “Rocket 88,”. That's a personal loss, because not only was that the first rock n roll record, but my dad has a '49 Olds Rocket 88, and that is the car's theme song. I'd love to hear a remastered version of the song using modern recording techniques. Sadly, that'll never happen now. The article is long but very informative, I know a lot more about what a master recording is and why they are so important than I did before.

My wife's grandparents live their entire lives in Waskom, and her father was born there - real close to the Louisiana border, about 30 miles from Shreveport. We've driven through a few times to look at 'the old home place".

Waskom won their first ever Texas State Football Championship in 2014 (they'd been competing for over 100 years). Big Deal for a little bitty town, but it's a place that loves its kids.

89 Hey everybody.

Re "The Day The Music Burned," there's a ton of classic recordings, movies and TV shows that are considered hopelessly lost today.

It's especially galling because a series of fires from the 1930s to the 1960s on studio backlots destroyed so many original negatives and other artifacts. Also, the major broadcast networks would 'wipe' and erase/reuse videotape of daytime TV, soaps, live news, game shows, and sporting events (including the original 1967 Super Bowl) and did it right up pretty much until the early 1980s. Many 1960s Johnny Carson-hosted Tonight Show episodes were lost.

One of the craziest stories: almost the entire kinescope library of the 1950s-era DuMont network was destroyed in the 1970s because, according to the now-deceased star of one of their shows, the films were dumped into the East River.

97 I remember one high school teacher who was bald and who was pretty freaky, he'd have emotional outbursts. One time I remember him throwing erasers at one kid who talked in class and bugged him. Then we found out that he really did have a big steel plate in his head from the Korean War.

111 My sister is just being a total dick lately. I don't know what her problem is. I'm basically just trying not to exacerbate the situation, meaning I don't respond in kind (even when it is REALLY TEMPTING... but part of the problem is that this is upsetting my mom, and I don't want to make *that* worse). But I don't really want to have anything else to do with her anyway. Her 19yo stepdaughter tried to kill herself a few weeks ago, and her and her husband's reaction was to have her throw up the pills she'd taken and go to bed alone. No medical help, no nothing. And then she, my sister, said, "Why is this happening to me?" So, I don't know who she is.

I've never been especially close to my sister - 6 yr age difference, very few interests in common, and not at all similar personality-wise - but I didn't think we were this far apart. I have a feeling that when our parents are gone, we won't see each other anymore. Which I think is sad - sisters should be close. I hope my sons stay close to each other.

Anyway, sorry for the bummer post. How about them Astros? Also, have I told you guys that cochlear implants are awesome? I genuinely feel like a whole world is open to me that was closed off when I still wore hearing aids.

117 On equipping others...

Snap up every bargain basement .22 rifle deal you can find.

Lots of 2nd tier branded ones out there, such as J.C. Higgins, Western Field, Stevens, etc.

Dozen or two of those, and a couple of 5,000 rd. cases of .22 LR ammo, and you've equipped the neighbors with an easy to use weapon, and ensured ammo compatibility in the bargain.

Score the right deals on the Just Right .22 rifles, and you'll have a collection that'll at a minimum, keep pace with inflation, in terms of value.

.22s are great to use in the process of "procuring" heavier armaments, provided the requisite levels of stealth, skill and ruthlessness.

Which can be a "learned value", as needed. And talent, as it were, will naturally rise to the top in stressful conditions.

.22 LR, especially out of a carbine, tends to go in and then bounce around inside a lot. So there's little to no blow through, all the damage stays inside. It's weird, just sort of a sweet spot of size and weight and speed.

161 For many years in the late '70s through the mid '80s, many "Major Brand" ballistic vests were *not* warranted against the .22 LR.

The projectile is coming at you at the speed on the lower end of .357 Magnum velocities, but with only about 1/3 of the frontal area of the .357.

It's concentrating that energy on a far smaller group of woven Kevlar, than the larger diameter round.

Works the same way a sewing needle goes through your heavy denim.

Today's vests *ARE* certified to stop the .22. But this is a relatively well developed technology, and it improves every single year. Because, so do the synthetic fibers used to make 'em.

Back in the old days though? It was all pretty much "add more layers" in the technology.

165 >> I don't think one needs a license or permission to kill agricultural pests,

You can kill any varmint (there is a precise definition of what constitutes pests), including deer if it's close enough to a dwelling. But you're supposed to get a permit to kill 'em in the fields.

This is close enough to the house to be legal to shoot dead, so it's close. Only problem is there's so many of 'em.

I'm gonna rig a crude 45 degree fence. Just slap something up out there.

Deer can jump a 4' fence like nothing. 6' is easy as well. You need 8' or better. However, a 45 slant confuses them and makes it hard for them to judge distance to jump.

If anyone remembers, last week or so I was talking about the carb on my B&S tiller. I got around to fixing it this afternoon.

It wasn't one of the pulse-jets with the diaphragm pump, just a straight sucker.

I took it down. Apparently one of the holes in the body was clogged. I took the needle valve out, and there was a removable jet behind it. Took that out, and there were two little hole behind it. Took the air squirter and blew it.

I couldn't get any air to come out through the throat, so I got some carb cleaner and finally got air to blow through.

Put it back together and it fired right up. Adjusted the needle and the governor and it was good to go. Running like a top now.

174 Wife and I attended a memorial service fo a 92 y/o neighbor who died in her remote mountain cabin (where she lived alone) a couple months ago. She was a tough old Norwegian woman who was feisty and curmudgeonly. Typical small town memorial, group recitation of the Lord's Prayer, group singing of Amazing Grace and remembrances.

One of our other neighbors had a reminiscence that up until her mid 80s she would climb up on her rather steep roof via a ladder and sweep out her chimney. He told her, those days were over and he would take care of her chimney (no euphemism) from that point on. So he clambered up the ladder, shimmied perilously along the ridge line to the chimney and began to remove the spark arrester. He heard a noise and turned around and she was right behind him on the roof making sure he was doing it right.

I'd like to be that feisty in my 80's.

175 I always thought that mental illnesses kind of precluded self-diagnosis, given that the feedback would just go back into the original worldview and be described as "normal outlook."

But there's this friend of mine, who has started to think that his outlook on life and all is not normal, and that he might, in fact, be insane. He has started to look at the thoughts and ideas he has, the things he constructs from random moments, and the outlook that he has had on "normal" human behavior, and he wonders if he should put himself away before he does something harmful.

I'm not sure what to tell him. He tells me that he can look at decisions he made before, and see how they are not normal, and it worries him.

So far as I can tell he has not harmed himself or others, but the idea worries him, especially the part about harming others without being aware of the harm.

Almost any mental illness that is mental, and not physical (chemical imbalance or disease) is fixed by the person afflicted. A therapist can only help point, the real work comes from the patient.

If they are entertaining the idea they might be ill, then they might actually benefit from a psychiatrist. Psychiatrist, not psychologist, I'm biased but the medical degree means they might be able to find organic problems as opposed to just doing a good job of listening.

Good luck to your friend.

Mr. B., a science teacher, came by and started pointing out on the game board, a map of Normandy, all the towns that he had gone through. He was in Army intelligence. Analyst, from what I could glean.

Dad, who was in the Reserve when he was young, said Mr. B. was his instructor. Dad said they once learned to throw knives.

God, we all loved Mr. B.

For that matter, the principal -- a fat guy -- had been a Navy frogman. I wondered what he had looked like then.

Paternal grandpa's cousin came back from Europe as a first lieutenant with honors for heroism -- and a drinking problem. Grandpa often had to bail him out, I overheard. He finally stopped drinking. I would encounter him on trips to town. I loved our conversations.

Oh, and a family friend enlisted as a conscious objector. He became an ambulance driver, and I would have bet that he saw more blood than most G.I.s did.

All gone now. Thank God we had such men.

The fundamental thing you need to understand about Japanese culture is that it has absolutely no concept of an intermediate setting. Whatever a Japanese person decides to do is always done full-bore.

288 Publius.

The .308 part would be legal for deer, no doubt.

But if your state has a 5 round limit on the rifle, then you'll have to do some Harry Potter grade scrounging in the aftermarket magazine field.

OR, you can take a common 10 round AR-10 magazine, and insert 1/2 inch pins in the front and rear flats of the magazine, thus preventing the follower from descending into the magazine body. Set those pins where the magazine can only hold FOUR rounds.

With one in the chamber, there's your Five Round Limit.

Restrictive States based that on the (then) everyman's Mauser/Springfield/Enfield/ bolties, which were the pattern for untold millions of "Civilian" bolt action sporting rifles, ever since.

Which is why comparatively few SMLE pattern rifles were sporterized, in comparison to the Mausers and Springfields, and to a lesser extent, Enfields.

Oh, and do be careful how you construct your "blind" for these nuisance deer.

The more it looks like a Spontaneous Shot was taken, the fewer hassles you're likely to incur.

Now the thrust is diagnosis, and you replace the offending part but you FIX nothing. I hate that nobody builds anything that can be repaired instead of replaced.

323 Anna, true. And the linked article admits there's probably too much material for humanity to ever really go through everything and find the hidden gems.

Theoretically digital technology can make perfect copies of everything eventually so that no one disaster can have such a detrimental effect, but then there's also too much material to transfer in any kind of timely fashion. Plus the recording industry is in kind of a scrambling mode right now, and only wants to do what makes money for itself.

So the end result is that probably even more priceless recordings, videotapes and other artifacts will end up destroyed, before the problem ever goes away entirely.

325 Oops, let's fix this.

Posted by: Lt. Cmdr Montgomery Scott at June 15, 2019 12:32 AM (M5h3L)

326 Ignition points (i.e Kettering ignition) work fine, but their performance degrades subtly over time. Contacts burn, the rubbing block wears, condenser becomes leaky, etc. All resulting in weaker spark, and/or timing drift.

Electronic ignition (in a distributor, not crank-triggered) basically works right on spec until it doesn't, and then it usually fails outright.

You can carry a replacement module and pickup coil, and change them on the roadside, if need be. But it doesn't need routine maintenance every 10k miles.

And it's getting harder and harder to find good quality ignition points in auto supply stores. Some of the stuff sold now is crap.

328 Cal Worthington lives on.

He's called "Mattress Mack", and he's the most successful, One Store (until he grew to 3 stores a few years back) furniture store, EVER.

His ONE STORE on I-45 North in Houston, was in the TOP TWENTY furniture retailers in the USA, and that's versus major chains like Star, Bassett, LaZBoy, etc.

Difference is, while Mattress Mac has the drive, the marketing savvy, the work ethic and the genius of Cal Worthington, he brings in a degree of honesty, candor, generosity and charity, heretofore not seen in the retail world.

If you're ever staying in the Greater Houston TV market, be sure to keep an eye out for Gallery Furniture TV commercials. Better still...visit Gallery Furniture at the I-45 North location.

You're very likely to meet Mac, there at his post at the front doors.

And you'll be in awe of the store, it's offerings, and staff.

Nary a scrap of Made in China furniture there, now. (he did dabble in it one, and junked the stock in short order, it was crap!)

The staff works with a Chick Fil A kind of positivity, enthusiasm and drive.

Speaking of drive.

You buy something there, you'd best be home three hours later.

Because they're GOING TO DELIVER IT, right about then.

The only "backorders" at Gallery Furniture are on true, custom order pieces.

The Rest? You bought it. It'll be in your home, TODAY!*

*locals will grin at the meaning of "TODAY!"

I actually killed a deer with that LR-308 a few years ago. Same thing, nuisance, shot her right out in the garden.

I had some cheap soft point ammo in the thing, and it did a number on the carcass. Sort of splodey. I called a buddy of mine and they got the thing and dressed it out. He said I did waste some meat, but there was still a lot of good stuff on it.

I or my father killed one out in the field a few months before that. There were a bunch way down there in the field, sneaking out of the woods, and would've come on up come dark. They did that over a couple days.

Now get this, both my father and I just grabbed a little .22 rifle and shot through them down there just to scare them.

A couple of days later, I noticed buzzards circling. Damned if there wasn't a dead deer out there. One of us managed to kill one with a .22, not even trying.

I took the front end loader and disposed of it, covering him up.

Taylor Swift's latest song has a new target: homophobes.

Coinciding with the announcement of her seventh album, "Lover," the pop star on Thursday released a new tune called "You Need to Calm Down," where she addresses her own haters but also calls out those who attack the LGBTQ community.

At one point on the beat-laden track, Swift sings: "And control your urges to scream about all the people you hate/ 'Cause shade never made anybody less gay."

At another point she sings: "You need to just stop, like can you just not step on his gown?"

385 375 363 Nope. Those are not euphemisms.

No. But they are words used to make the insane "feel" like their crazy choices are just fine and completely normal.

Again, fat people know they're fat. They're not insane. For the most part they're not making "crazy" choices. They just eat a little too much on an ongoing basis and don't know how to get back to a normal weight.

That's not even in the same league as gender dysphoria.

C language syntax. "!" is the logical NOT operator. And "~" is the arithmetic NOT.

In other languages "" serves the not equal function.

He went down with binoculars to see piping plovers-an endangered bird at the shore. He was just in the parking lot . He didn't go on the beach because you 're not supposed to. He's right. I consider myself an environmentalist and a conservationist. I volunteer for things and contribute. I hate piping plovers.

It's not their fault per se, they're just little fluffy shore sparrows that don't do sex well enough to reproduce. So miles of shoreline get shut down to protect 27 nesting pairs.

I'm sorry, if you're down to 54 birds you should just go the Panda route and let people inseminate you in the zoo.

427 Tonight's thread appears to be an amalgamation of rifles, deer, and women's bodies.

I will attempt to blend in

There used to be a strip bar somewhat nearby named "Bambi's". A few of my older gentlemen customers would jokingly tell me to tell their wives that were at the Deer Lodge, if they came by looking for them.

My understanding is many of the ladies at Bambi's fell more squarely into the "big-boned" category rather than the "curvy" category, but that apparently was not a deterrent for those fellows as they said it was only $5 to get in + $1 for each beer they brought in with them.

Standards vs Affordability, always a pressing debate.

Tennessee has a two-tiered Strip Club rule as near as I can tell.

A strip bar may have frontal nudity, but may not sell alcohol.

Or

It may require pasties and a g-string and be permitted sell alcohol.

But, you may not have nudity and sell alcohol.

Thus, clubs of the former variety allow patrons to bring in alcohol but they must pay the establishment for the privilege to do so.

464 The issue for Taylor Swift, Arianna Grande & Miley Cyrus types is that they start off appealing to tweety-bopper girls and so there music tends to be fun and wholesome.

But as they get older and as they're fan base gets older, they are too old to appear on Disney shows so their handlers tell them that they must become edgy whores to shed their innocent reputation.

And so you get Miley Cyrus acting like a stupid whore eating an abortion cake, twerking and smoking dope.

It's a shame. No one has any self-respect when you set a million or two dollars in front of them.

473 *HAH!* I thought Farmer was talking about my convalescent stuff, but then I remembered about his ankle.

Waking-up and being confused is "normal" for me!

We had an excellent conversation, Farmer. When we get into historical discussions, I feel like a school-girl with my leg bouncing up & down.

...okay. That sounded Gay, but You Get It.

*flips-off the rest of the blog*

-sounded Gay, you Fags.

And Mannix gets a Rottweiler sicked on him. It was funny, the rottweiler was a happy boy, nice boy, with his tongue out panting. They overdubbed vicious dog growls.

The dog jumped on Mannix, with much snarling dubbed over. But the dog was just playing, you could see him trying to lick Mannix when he jumped him.

482 It's nice to finally have a weekend truly "off" as Dad is going out of town with friends this weekend and there's a break --for now-- in seemingly endless flow of visiting relatives. Love them all but it's been soooo exhausting.

483 The Guadalcanal link yesterday on the ONT took a hour to get through to loading . I quit close to 300 because wasn't sure it wouldn't take me all the way to the Enola Gay.

486 I usually get up at 4am on workdays, don't know how the hell I manage to stay up so late on weekends. Falling asleep in my chair by 7pm at midweek.

Posted by: JQ at June 15, 2019 03:24 AM (gP/Z3)

487 My Dad was a bit surprised and intrigued that I (daughter) own a .40 semi-auto and have ccw.

He's not at all worried that I might be a criminal; not freaking out about whether imma shoot him, fer cryin' out loud.

That silly article was just STOOPID from start to finish. Very likely "manufactured" to boot...

If he's needing an excuse to get his adult daughter out and on her own, he should give it a shot.

489 redc1c4, if you're lurking, still working on getting off of whatever blacklist your ISP is using.

Found and emailed another link in the chain tonight. Eventually I'll have been ignored by all of them.

491 Still awake, not that anyone cares, but not for long.

I'm smiling right now, thinking of some long, serious and fun conversations I've had with people from this website over the past couple-a days.

-I thank you for your thoughts and prayers.

502 I thought that was just "feeling sorry for myself", but it isn't. Trying to keep a lid on chaos is not the same as a routine.

I guess goals will have to do. Dad lost the keys to the brand new rider-mower the day before yesterday and I have two prescriptions to pick-up and I have to make dinner.

Controlled Chaos is an odd way to live, I guess. I suppose they call that job "Mom", however.

506 I like this Sounds like 2020.

When the Cambrian measures were forming, They promised perpetual peace.
They swore, if we gave them our weapons, that the wars of the tribes would cease.
But when we disarmed They sold us and delivered us bound to our foe,
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings said: "Stick to the Devil you know."
