The European Union's second highest court ruled on Wednesday that Adidas's three-stripe branding was invalid as a trademark as it lacked a distinctive character.
Loading... The General Court of the European Union said it upheld a decision of the European Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) in 2016 to annul a previous decision to accept the mark. The German sports goods company registered the trademark in 2014 for clothing, footwear and headgear, saying it consisted of "three parallel equidistant stripes of equal width applied to the product in whichever direction." However, it was challenged by Belgian company Shoe Branding Europe, with which Adidas has been in a decade-long dispute. Posted by: SMOD at June 19, 2019 09:41 AM (QkjLD) 41

Mannerism comes from the Italian word for stylish. It was the style that immediately followed the High Renaissance. The new generation of artists were bored with the classical rigidity of the Renaissance and were playing with its rules and ideas to create something new. People liked it. Thought it had "style". Some scholars think Michelangelo's "Last Judgement" is Mannerist. Posted by: Kris at June 19, 2019 09:47 AM (OyyDO) 70

Mannerism is notoriously hard to interpret because of the distortions, and every artist had his own technique and code. In this, the long neck and the column in the back are supposed to be references to a passage in the Old Testament about a woman with a neck like a column or pillar. Song of Solomon, maybe? Later Christians thought that the passage referred to Mary. Parmigianino took the metaphor literally.

Posted by: Roy at June 19, 2019 10:18 AM (ABjxW) You're joking, but Christ's birth is the subject of a lot of theological speculation. Since the pain of childbirth is explicitly linked to original sin in Genesis, and through the Immaculate Conception, Mary lacked original sin (at least according to the Catholic Church), it follows that she would have had a completely pain-free childbirth. So Jesus' birth itself would have been miraculous. Posted by: joe, living dangerously at June 19, 2019 10:21 AM (KUaJL) 182

The Encyclical Mystici Corporis from Pope Pius XII (1943) in addition holds that Mary was also sinless personally, "free from all sin, original or personal".In this, Pius XII repeats a position already expressed by the Council of Trent which decreed "If anyone shall say that a man once justified can sin no more, nor lose grace, and that therefore he who falls and sins was never truly justified; or, on the contrary, that throughout his whole life he can avoid all sins even venial sins, except by a special privilege of God, as the Church holds in regard to the Blessed Virgin: let him be anathema. His response? "Trump's a very unpopular president, he really needs to be in the upper 40's in popularity to get reelected. His unpopularity is due to some of the things he says and his behavior at times, particularly with women. ( meaning he's unpopular with women) . Maria just stared at him, didn't respond and thankfully, there was a break, so she thanked him for being on her show which she is conducting in Cannes France right now. This brilliant perspective was being barfed up while looking at a sell out crowd of 20,000 in Orlando Florida, with an overflow crowd in the parking lots and requests for 100,000 tickets. $24.8 million in donations in 24 hours, which broke records. Sanctuary city government members sentenced to thousands of years each - with double time for health hazards. Dems try to impeach Trump and Barr. Trump - under 10 U.S. Code 333 has the Army arrest the Governments of the Blue states. Pointing out that their denial of 2nd amendment rights causes the Blue states to lose their representation in congress and their electoral college votes, the move to impeach fails for lack of votes. Posted by: Tom Servo at June 19, 2019 10:41 AM (Kpl3J) By the time of the Tetrarchs the Roman artistic style had almost completely eliminated any naturalism in favor of a stylized, generalized image intended to convey a specific message rather than actual likeness. Physical features became more general and linear. This look became the style of Byzantium and the Middle Ages. Naturalism would not be seen in the West again until the Renaissance. The most famous image of Constantine, the colossus from the Basilica of Maxentius is about the absolute imperial power of Constantine the Great, not about Constantine the Man. Why would Mary have a pillar that isn't holding up anything?
"The design of the painting is based on text taken from medieval hymns to the Virgin (herself traditionally understood as an allegorical representation of the Church), which likens her neck to a great ivory column, supporting the Church of God. Thus the exaggerated length of Virgin's neck is -- like the marble pillar or column in the background -- a sign of the painting's religious meaning." Good News: I found the keys that Dad lost and I don't have to make an Emergency-Run to John Deere.
Bad news: I was the one who "lost" them and I still can't remember where or when I took them. They came out in the dryer. Weird News: They told me I would be confused, at times with the liver disease, but sometimes I "Get It", what Dad is going through. Best News: I feel good today and I got plenty of sleep. ...sweet. Whenever I'm in the grocery and see "Suddenly Salad!", I think "Suddenly Last Salad." Posted by: Wolfus Aurelius at June 19, 2019 10:55 AM (ClOmq) Oh yeah, cannibalism is strongly suggested on the part of the feral children that have staged the attack that Taylor's character is repressing. But the even darker revealed secret is that the attack happened because the oh-so-perfect friend that they keep talking about, who died, turns out to have spent his lifetime traveling around desperately poor areas and homosexually abusing children, so in fact he deserved what he got. And the rich lady (Katherine Hepburn) who presents as Moral and Righteous and Proper turns out at the end to have always known about it and to have helped him cover up what he was doing for most of her life. This movie gets into very, very dark territory, which is why I suspect it is so seldom shown. Posted by: Tom Servo at June 19, 2019 11:12 AM (Kpl3J) 420

For a long time, the hep insider call on the WSJ was that while the news coverage crew was leftie, the editorial staff was reliable. This wasn't actually true in the first place, because RINO -- "Pro-business" to stock players doesn't mean the same as it does to, say, tavern owners. In the long run, it turned out to be like saying the Boy Scouts would allow gay Eagle Scouts but not gay adult leaders. Where do you think the editorial staff comes from?
Most likely it was some rabid nevertrumperism just for the last four years or so (!) that brought it out, and like the Times they swear they're over it now, but WSJ is now just as agenda-driven as USA Today or the rest of the fun show, same agenda too. It's nice to have under your arm in the doctor's waiting room, and that's about it. I really don't care for their fashion magazine at all.
