So if the German unit was opposed to Napoleon, why would there be a pic of the Little General on the wall? Maybe this is a Romeo and Juliet thing. Her father supports Napoleon (which would be weird, in Germany); the young man (whom he refuses to allow his daughter to marry) is off to fight the Corsican.

"I can listen no longer in silence. I must speak to you by such means as are within my reach.
You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope. Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone for ever. I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own than when you almost broke it, eight years and a half ago. Dare not say that man forgets sooner than woman, that his love has an earlier death. I have loved none but you. Unjust I may have been, weak and resentful I have been, but never inconstant. You alone have brought me to Bath. For you alone, I think and plan. Have you not seen this? Can you fail to have understood my wishes? I had not waited even these ten days, could I have read your feelings, as I think you must have penetrated mine. I can hardly write. I am every instant hearing something which overpowers me. You sink your voice, but I can distinguish the tones of that voice when they would be lost on others. Too good, too excellent creature! You do us justice, indeed. You do believe that there is true attachment and constancy among men. Believe it to be most fervent, most undeviating, in F. W."I must go, uncertain of my fate; but I shall return hither, or follow your party, as soon as possible. A word, a look, will be enough to decide whether I enter your father's house this evening or never." -- Captain Wentworth, Persuasion Posted by: Lizzy at June 18, 2019 09:39 AM (bDqIh) 47

Milais painted this 45 years after Waterloo, so it may be long after they fought Napoleon.
Posted by: CharlieBrown'sDildo at June 18, 2019 09:43 AM (wYseH) The distance from Waterloo may explain the picture on the wall. Around mid-century, Napoleon's reputation was being reformed. he was beginning to be seen as a great general, and people were brushing off the whole conquest thing. This was happening in Britain which set JMW Turner into a snit. He painted at least one heavily anti-Napoleon painting in his last years, long after Waterloo. That image is a print of probably the most famous painting of the Emperor. I'm also not surprised to see it on the wall behind a soldier, a warrior. And how many later generals modeled themselves after Napoleon? I think they were still doing so up until WWI. Posted by: Kris at June 18, 2019 09:56 AM (OyyDO) 106

Posted by: Kris at June 18, 2019 09:56 AM (OyyDO) The Civil War Generals studied and emulated Napoleon in many ways. From the "Kepi" to battalions, regiments, etc they emulated the French. They even had Zouve units and I could go on and on. But those that say they used Napoleonic tactics, failing to understand modern weaponry are mistaken. These men were not dummies, the did understand that thing had changed from the Napoleonic era. The hubris people have today to assume we know better than those who studied the military art their whole lives and in battle. They made tactical changes from the first whiff of gunpowder until the flags were laid down by one side. Posted by: Quint at June 18, 2019 10:04 AM (n13/j) 131

And how many later generals modeled themselves after Napoleon? I think they were still doing so up until WWI. Posted by: Kris at June 18, 2019 09:56 AM (OyyDO) The time period of the painting is just before Waterloo. Via wikipedia, art critics since the painting was made have been asking the same questions about the presence of a print of Napoleon on the wall of a soldier fighting against him: Millais reduced the presence of Napoleon to an engraving after Jacques-Louis David's Napoleon Crossing the Alps, which is framed on the damask-hung wall, and which "perplexed the critics with the possible intricacies of cross purposes and rival jealousies" according to the reviewer from Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine. This refers to the fact that some critics took the print to imply that the female character was an admirer of Napoleon, and so she was trying to prevent her lover from joining the army for both personal and political reasons. As the critic of The Times surmised, "her reluctance is due in part to a romantic admiration for this great conquerer." Other critics suggest the print was intended to allude to both the Waterloo campaign and to more recent events, particularly Napoleon III's repetition of his predecessor's crossing of the Alps by his attack on Austrian-controlled Lombardy in 1859. After Napoleon defeated the German States in 1806 and 1809 the defeated states where required by treaty to send troops to support his invasion of Russia. The painting may be of an officer going off to a war he really does not want to fight. Interestingly, the average citizen in the states the French conquered got a better deal under Napoleon than they had under the ruling nobles the French defeated. The disenfranchised ruling classes were the driving force against Napoleon's rule. I would guess plenty of poor conscripts had little desire to fight the french and in fact probably wanted Napoleon to keep winning, unlike their high born officers. ============== David did a painting of Cupid and Psyche the horde would love. First off, boobs! Second, Cupid looks happily drunk, while Psyche looks exhausted. If you have a praise report, prayer need or update please send it to me by 7:30 EST tomorrow morning to FenelonDirection18 at sign gmail.com Due to space concerns I am keeping requests to five weeks unless I know of an ongoing concern or receive an update. (I am always glad to receive updates) and I will be glad to put the request back up. Thanks for praying for others. This is a wonderful thing we can do as people of faith! Prayer is not an indifferent, small thing. It is not a sweet little privilege. It is a great prerogative, far reaching in its effects. Failure to pray entails great loss. Prayer is not just an episode in the life of faith. Life is a preparation for and the result of prayer. In its condition prayer is the sum of religion, the language of the spiritual life Prayer is not only the language of the spiritual life, but prayer also makes its very essence and forms its innermost character.
