Today; Got all the fraudulent credit card accts opened in my name closed. Put a credit security freeze in place with all the major credit reporting bureaus. Verizon reinstated my stolen cell phone number. Local cop shop faxed the incident report to the all the various places that it needed to go. Found a possible, serious buyer for the last piece of the family farm.

Assuwa was a confederation of western Anatolian kingdoms and tribes long before all that, in the 1400s I think. The records somewhat die off on all sides; then Suppiluliuma I and Mursili II revived the kingdom of Hatti. But when they look west, they don't find Assuwa; they find Arzawa.
Hattusili III did have to deal with Ahhiya(wa), yes. There are problems in the archives because I don't think much has been found in the last few generations. At least, not from their time. They're still sorting through the records from that dark-age between that Assuwa dustup and the rise of Suppiluliuma.

In winter in Michigan you have these huge hills of snow and ice formed by snow plows clearing the parking lot. The game is a free for all of kids shoving each other off the hill. It was great fun and crybabies knew enough to stay out of the game.

When the Qin Emperor dies, pretty much the entire empire goes into open revolt. But the chief eunuch (in China, all court bureaucrats were eunuchs) keeps news of the revolt from the new emperor. On a related note, the founder of the Han Dynasty was a man by the name of Liu Bang. Shortly after the Qin Emperor died, Liu Bang was asked to escort a group of prisoners. Along the way, a few of the prisoners escaped. Liu Bang knew that when they reached their destination, he and everyone else in the party would be executed as punishment for the escape of the prisoners.
So he said, "Screw it," freed the rest of the prisoners (most of whom joined him), and rebelled.

) Cyberpunk, that was first released back in 1988. The company that's developing the game, CD Projekt Red (the same company that released the Witcher series), put on a couple of presentations for the game at E3 this week.
One of them featured Keanu Reeves (who is apparently in the game), and generated just a teensy tiny bit of buzz... *cough*
Anyway...
As is always the case with such things, people carefully watched and analyzed every bit of video that they could get their hands on from the released material. And they found an ad poster in the game. This poster is attempting to sell its product by saying that "mixing" things was good. The most prominent "mixed" thing in the poster is an individual who is mixing lady parts up top (i.e. breasts) with man parts down below.
And now the howlers have unleashed themselves, claiming that it's sooper doper insensitive to have an in-game ad in which a transsexual is shown in a sexualized light. An article denouncing the poster (and the game) has even turned up in at least one of the usual on-line video game "news" websites.

Of course, since CD Projekt Red is a Polish company, I doubt that they much care what a bunch of American SJWs think about what is quite possibly one of the most highly anticipated upcoming video games.

The owner was in his eighties, and got beat by three of the f'n thugs trying to steal from him. Original charge on the thug was felony 2 robbery. I would have given up the business long ago; there has to be an easier place to bake.
Then one of the college admins suggests to him that "first-time" shoplifters should get a pass (because racism, I guess.) He says, how do I know who is first-time?
So college admin says, well then, why don't you just call me instead of the cops when one of my little darlings jacks you? What a sordid, disgusting college that is. What a sorry sick heap of sh!t.

US aircraft investigates burning ship, captures images of mine still stuck to side of tanker vessel, notes Iranian boat(s) in the area, then flies away. Iranian boat comes back and removes unexploded mine. Eventually, USS Bainbridge arrives and notices the unexploded mine is no longer on the hull, and takes the tanker's crew off.
This isn't an evolution where the mine exploded and the Bainbridge showed up five minutes later. The Iranians would have had at least six or eight hours, and likely more, before a warship arrived.

The SJW's are everywhere. A board wargame company, that has games on esoteric topics, proposed a "Scramble For Africa" game, simulating the time when the European powers divided up Africa.
Well, some SJW's threw a fit at the insensitive, colonist topic, and the owner of the game company put out a groveling e-mail apologizing for even considering the topic, and withdrawing the proposal. There are some historical topics you can no longer do games on, apparently.
At most, the game would have sold a couple of thousand copies, but that didn't stop the SJW's from shutting it down.
Considering that the game company cranks out lots of games where one side plays the Nazis or the Confederacy, we'll see if this was a one-off, or if large sections of history are going to be declared off-limits.

It's a *big* problem in historical games.
A World War 2 miniatures game that I've played is called "Flames of War". The company that makes it created rules that would allow you to reproduce a small Polish resistance group from the Warsaw Uprising in 1944.
The problem is that some of the Nazi units sent in to suppress the uprising were among the most depraved that Nazi Germany had to offer. Players actually didn't want the rules to play the Polish freedom fighters because they were afraid that similar rules would be created to portray their historical opponents.
That ultimately proved to not be the case, though, since the people who make the game essentially said, "Use generic German troops of these particular types to represent the kinds of units that would have fought to suppress the Uprising."

Apple briefly banned all games in the App Store that had Confederate flags in the game. Apple has also banned an excellent game on the war in Afghanistan, because the game portrayed the Taliban as the bad guys (really).

There is another excellent game in the App Store, which simulates fighting for control of a province in an unnamed country. Although the country is unnamed, the population is highly religious, wears funny hats, grows pistachio nuts, and the game starts in 2002.
For now, Apple is willing to tolerate that, so long as the name of the country is not mentioned.

There are the cases of the imperative - "shall" can be strongly imperative while "will" is generally more descriptive:
"You shall bring the car over tomorrow." - this is basically an order.
"You will bring the car over tomorrow." - this is more of a prediction or matter of fact summation of what will occur, though it does depend on ones intonation.

Thanks for the heads-up. You know, given the fact that nearly every thread eventually turns into a gun thread, NTTAWWT, why doesn't Ace contact some of the big on-line arms and ammo vendors, and ask them to buy text/image ads that could be built into the HQ content, so that we could see them, unlike the ads served by adservers, which many of us block routinely?
Liquor and beer would also be good products for such "flat" ads. Just like magazine ads used to be: the ad is there, you can read it, but it don't sing and it don't dance.

I never heard of that. The 10 commandments uses "shall" ('shalt' - close enough) and they are all 2nd person, 'thou shalt [not]".
As far as my sense of English, 'shall' is mostly outdated but when it is used it is more of an imperative.

That's basically the opposite of what I was taught, and of what the current Oxford English dictionary says.
The traditional rule is "shall" is used with the first person, and "will" is used with second and third.
For imperative stress, to mean an order, you reverse those.
"I will" is the strong form for the first person and "You/He shall" is the strong form for the second and third persons.
But that meaning is lost on modern ears.

In legal use, there are differences between will and shall that get subtle. If a contract says, "the party of the first part will", that's different than "the party of the first part shall".
Some lawyer would have to explain it.

My neighbor has been gone for weeks and now a homeless man is camping in his back yard. My two story house looks over his yard so it is very clear what is going on over the fence. I don't have a way to contact my neighbor.
Thoughts and observations:
-he doesn't seem to be bothering anyone. Yet.
-he was doing paperwork yesterday (maybe a good sign)
-yes, he has meth pipe and uses it
-he has a large hunting knife which is concerning
Do I call the cops? Is there someone else to contact?
Spoiler: the cops refused to do anything.
Update:
I just got back home. Yup. He's still here. Lying naked in the backyard sun. In clear view of 6 of my house's windows. Yuk.

Oh man, Link Wray. Our band covered Rumble, it's an instrumental carried entirely by lead guitar. Our guy had it down pat. Done properly, it should sound like a gang fight. We also covered Walk Away from Love. GF bought me his Live at the Paradiso, not that she had ever heard of him, but merely because of his pic on the LP - 50 yo guy in shades and black leather. All time great live LP. Think the drummer played on the Letterman show for years.

The judge has worked very hard to make the case appealet proof. Judges are elected in Ohio. The Judge added lawyer costs. He's not reducing unless he believes that's the only avenue to appleal. Judges don't like over ruling juries.

You'd think that they would have a sense of local juries, at least.
However, the local law firm was probably overruled at every juncture by snotty Oberlin officials who knew better than the law firm on how to try a case.

I don't think the judge has made a decision as to whether the punitive damages will be reduced.
Yes, under Ohio law the cap should be twice the compensatory damages, but as LI said this is not a hard cap but a guideline. In this case the compensatory damages were $11.2 million so technically the jury could award a maximum $22.4 million in punitive damages. But they awarded $33 million. It will be up to the judge to decide whether to knock the number down.
As well, the jury awarded $150,000 in attorneys' fees. The judge will also get to decide the final number.

No, no, you misunderstand. There was no change in tone or anything like that, the 'or else' was always assumed/implied. 'You will clean out the garage tomorrow'. Didn't matter the emphasis placed on any word in that sentence. Now the 'or else' depended on the severity of the 'will' being ignored. Not washing the cars? Not too bad. But not cleaning out the garage? The 'or else' consequences in ignoring that 'will' were too horrible to contemplate.

If I had every rating up to and including Astronaut, and had any aircraft available, with every known state of the art boot or bleed air or other anti-icing option.
I'd still walk before I'd fly in known icing conditions.
Or suspected icing conditions.
That I've surely done so countless times aboard airliners piloted by skilled and competent cockpit crew, with said jets employing boots, bleed and other aeronautical voodoo, makes no difference to me.
I've steered a Gold Wing off of a freeway ramp, and checked into the nearest hotel, 'cause ice was beginning to stick to the polycarbonate windshield.
And that bike was *already* "safely" on the ground.
Can you tell that I have a "don't wanna die yet" respect for all that is ice?
And yes, that includes sailing in Northern Latitudes in the winter months. Just, NO.
I can sail, I can navigate.
But sledging ice off of the mast, railings and other abovedecks fittings just doesn't seem like my idea of smooth sailing, at all.

Canada was genuinely excited when Toronto won their first World Series. The next one was nice too. Montreal got screwed the year after because of the season being called off, otherwise they had a good chance of winning that World Series. But the whole idea that the rest of Canada is paying, ahem, rapt attention to what Toronto's sports teams are doing is far-fetched. Yes, there are Maple Leafs fans stretched across the nation, but most of the country doesn't give a flying fig.

What amazes me on the series thus far, is the lack of going after Big Game to lay in a serious supply of smoked, cured meat to cover the Cold Months.
And the same goes to the lack of building solid, tight, serious shelters.
Depending on the lay of the land, those ought to be Tree House height in elevation, too.
Fuck "camping". Build as if you were a settler, a Pioneer.
And gather game the same way, as well as foraging for edible greens.
Plant something that'd grow in that climate, too.
Wanna win that challenge? Go at it like you're going to live there for the next FIVE years.
And I've yet to see the one greatest sign of commitment to win.
When you see a Challenger hurl his or her "OMG" radio forty yards off into the water on Day One, then you'll know who your winner is gonna be.

Might end up being a five year series to determine the winner, but you'd see some bad-ass survival techniques at their finest.

"The app intentionally mistranslates the English to 'so happy/content' instead of 'so sad'," added student Rachel Wong on Twitter. "I hope Google fixes this."
When AFP entered the sentence "I am sad to see Hong Kong become part of China" on Friday morning it did show the wrong translation, replacing sad with happy.

The only time I ever saw the real sky was in Dahab, in the Sinai Peninsula. I couldn't believe it. I had never seen the Milky Way before. There were stars everywhere and if you just stared up long enough you saw a few meteors shoot by. It was awesome.

I told you that they are thick. It is Hardened Safety Glass and the bulb is in another glass casing underneath the Outside Layer.
They are about 1/2" thick, but the inner bulb is nothing that a child couldn't handle.
I've shot at them with pellet guns back in the Eighties. I'm not sure how they make them now, but they look the same.

I had a meeting with my manager yesterday about the cost of my search tools and how they're structured. I'm afraid I allowed myself to express quite a bit of bitterness. I said that I was a consistently misused asset, that for 10 years I had tried to show people what patent and literature information could do for them and for 10 years I was politely told to go outside and play.
I said I had never felt like a member of a team but like a kitchen utensil, pulled out of the drawer when needed, tossed back in when done and not thought about otherwise.
Ah, well. Ultimately, we're all a cost to the MBAs. They hate employees because they think that by getting a salary we're stealing from shareholders. And I never, ever trust the fine words of management about attracting and retaining talent.

But in fact, while it is illegal to accept contributions from foreign nationals for political campaigns (as Trump suggested he would do), paying a foreign national fair market value for opposition research is generally not illegal,
So when you get info from foreign source just drop a check in the mail and it is legal.

Seriously, though, I suspect the main driver behind the IL abortion law was Personal PAC, an IL political action committee that has boatloads of money and one and only one goal: electing the most rabidly pro-abort office holders possible. They are a major funding source for Dems in this state. Plus the passage of the MO abortion law meant lots of new potential customers for certain downstate abortion facilities....there's one in Granite City, right across from STL, and one in Springfield that would be within a 2- to 3-hour drive of most places in NE or mid MO.

For a couple of years at CWRU, I live up on top of the hill in Cleveland Heights, and when we walked down the stairs, we were in Cleveland (Murray Hill Road). Yeah, Little Italy was just a walk down Murray Hill, where you could catch some of the mobsters in their big, black Caddies.
And then there was the Black Mac (MacDonalds), over on Euclid, where they kept the bathrooms locked, and there was ALWAYS a security guard in the place.
Today, it is actually a lot nicer, and a lot less crime.
