This guy, Patrick Chovanec, traveled to Guadalcanal recently. Here is a monumental tweetstorm – 350+ tweets! - where he recounts the entire campaign, illustrated with contemporary photos, clips from movies about the battle, and present day photos he took on his trip. He does an outstanding job of telling the story by weaving the three together. As an aside, what an epic trip! I'd love to do that some day. Link goes to an unroll of his thread, so you can easily read the whole thing. If more modern history isn't your thing, maybe you'll enjoy Is the Myth of the Fall of Troy Actually True? BTW, Assuwa is not, as far as I know, mentioned in the Mursili III / Hattusili III annals of the 1200s BC. That article got that wrong.
Assuwa was a confederation of western Anatolian kingdoms and tribes long before all that, in the 1400s I think. The records somewhat die off on all sides; then Suppiluliuma I and Mursili II revived the kingdom of Hatti. But when they look west, they don't find Assuwa; they find Arzawa. Hattusili III did have to deal with Ahhiya(wa), yes. There are problems in the archives because I don't think much has been found in the last few generations. At least, not from their time. They're still sorting through the records from that dark-age between that Assuwa dustup and the rise of Suppiluliuma. Posted by: boulder t'hobo at June 13, 2019 10:15 PM (ykYG2) 61

Yeah, Jim Acosta is a big defender of the people.
What a pompous jackass. He and his ilk would gladly assist shipping half the people off to the camps and tried to undo their vote as a start. The more the MSM freaks out over some Trump outrage the only thing they do is make people like me hate them more. After nearly 3 years of this insanity they cannot have not moved more than a handful of LIV's. And is it as many that they have driven to Trump? Are they aware of this? Do they even care? The little cartoon at the end of the ONT reminds me of a series I've been watching on Netflix. It's called "Kings War", and its about the end of the Qin Dynasty in China, and the establishment of the Han Dynasty (generally considered China's golden age).
When the Qin Emperor dies, pretty much the entire empire goes into open revolt. But the chief eunuch (in China, all court bureaucrats were eunuchs) keeps news of the revolt from the new emperor. One messenger arrives from the front lines bringing news of a military disaster and (as used to be the case under the first emperor) goes straight to the throne room to report. The chief eunuch immediately has him dragged off and executed, claiming that the messenger was a liar working for the emperor's enemies. On a related note, the founder of the Han Dynasty was a man by the name of Liu Bang. Shortly after the Qin Emperor died, Liu Bang was asked to escort a group of prisoners. Along the way, a few of the prisoners escaped. Liu Bang knew that when they reached their destination, he and everyone else in the party would be executed as punishment for the escape of the prisoners. So he said, "Screw it," freed the rest of the prisoners (most of whom joined him), and rebelled. Posted by: junior at June 13, 2019 10:26 PM (Fp6vo) 127

Some of you might have heard of an upcoming video game called "Cyberpunk 2077". It's based off of a pencil and paper RPG called (surprisingly ) Cyberpunk, that was first released back in 1988. The company that's developing the game, CD Projekt Red (the same company that released the Witcher series), put on a couple of presentations for the game at E3 this week.
One of them featured Keanu Reeves (who is apparently in the game), and generated just a teensy tiny bit of buzz... *cough* Anyway... As is always the case with such things, people carefully watched and analyzed every bit of video that they could get their hands on from the released material. And they found an ad poster in the game. This poster is attempting to sell its product by saying that "mixing" things was good. The most prominent "mixed" thing in the poster is an individual who is mixing lady parts up top (i.e. breasts) with man parts down below. And now the howlers have unleashed themselves, claiming that it's sooper doper insensitive to have an in-game ad in which a transsexual is shown in a sexualized light. An article denouncing the poster (and the game) has even turned up in at least one of the usual on-line video game "news" websites. /rolleyes Of course, since CD Projekt Red is a Polish company, I doubt that they much care what a bunch of American SJWs think about what is quite possibly one of the most highly anticipated upcoming video games. But he never expected to be clotheslined. Never saw it coming. If I had an audio recording of the event, I'd be a rich man today. He made a separate, never before heard sound at each and every stage of the event, including the second bounce when he landed. For about three seconds, you could've heard a pin drop. The owner was in his eighties, and got beat by three of the f'n thugs trying to steal from him. Original charge on the thug was felony 2 robbery. I would have given up the business long ago; there has to be an easier place to bake. Then one of the college admins suggests to him that "first-time" shoplifters should get a pass (because racism, I guess.) He says, how do I know who is first-time? The US is saying the USS Bainbridge rescued the crews but also that Iranian vessels were able to remove one of the mines. Those two things can't both be true.
Sure they can. Iranian boat plants mines. One blows, one doesn't. US aircraft investigates burning ship, captures images of mine still stuck to side of tanker vessel, notes Iranian boat(s) in the area, then flies away. Iranian boat comes back and removes unexploded mine. Eventually, USS Bainbridge arrives and notices the unexploded mine is no longer on the hull, and takes the tanker's crew off. This isn't an evolution where the mine exploded and the Bainbridge showed up five minutes later. The Iranians would have had at least six or eight hours, and likely more, before a warship arrived. Now according to Bloonberg WH officials are now walking back the claim that Iran is responsible Someone hung Pompeo out to dry.
"Senior administration officials said that at least one of the ships was attacked by mines. In a briefing with reporters, they showed a photo of a tanker, the Courageous, with a hole in its side caused by a mine that exploded, they said, and an undetonated mine lodged inside. The officials said they didn't know for sure whether the mines were Iranian. The U.S. concluded that Iran was responsible for the attacks based on intelligence sources and the absence of any better explanation, the officials said. They declined to elaborate on the intelligence sources." Posted by: Brian in New Orleans at June 13, 2019 10:41 PM (rnXGe) 187

Of course, since CD Projekt Red is a Polish company, I doubt that they much care what a bunch of American SJWs think about what is quite possibly one of the most highly anticipated upcoming video games.
The SJW's are everywhere. A board wargame company, that has games on esoteric topics, proposed a "Scramble For Africa" game, simulating the time when the European powers divided up Africa. Well, some SJW's threw a fit at the insensitive, colonist topic, and the owner of the game company put out a groveling e-mail apologizing for even considering the topic, and withdrawing the proposal. There are some historical topics you can no longer do games on, apparently. At most, the game would have sold a couple of thousand copies, but that didn't stop the SJW's from shutting it down. Considering that the game company cranks out lots of games where one side plays the Nazis or the Confederacy, we'll see if this was a one-off, or if large sections of history are going to be declared off-limits. Never heard of 4 square but on our street we'd play ball tag in which the person who was 'it' had to tag someone with a (shaved tennis ball or sponge ball (remember to soak it first)) by throwing it at him (preferably in the balls) and they were 'it'. If you recover the ball before he does, you get to hit him in the balls or face again (you can't effectively cover both at once). It's distinguished as one of the only games where being 'it' was the best part. People would cry 'Mercy' and you could just hand the ball to them, but no one ever did. Ever.

@195 Considering that the game company cranks out lots of games where one side plays the Nazis or the Confederacy, we'll see if this was a one-off, or if large sections of history are going to be declared off-limits.
-------------------- It's a *big* problem in historical games. A World War 2 miniatures game that I've played is called "Flames of War". The company that makes it created rules that would allow you to reproduce a small Polish resistance group from the Warsaw Uprising in 1944. The problem is that some of the Nazi units sent in to suppress the uprising were among the most depraved that Nazi Germany had to offer. Players actually didn't want the rules to play the Polish freedom fighters because they were afraid that similar rules would be created to portray their historical opponents. That ultimately proved to not be the case, though, since the people who make the game essentially said, "Use generic German troops of these particular types to represent the kinds of units that would have fought to suppress the Uprising." The owner was in his eighties, and got beat by three of the f'n thugs trying to steal from him. Original charge on the thug was felony 2 robbery. I would have given up the business long ago; there has to be an easier place to bake. Then one of the college admins suggests to him that "first-time" shoplifters should get a pass (because racism, I guess.) He says, how do I know who is first-time? So college admin says, well then, why don't you just call me instead of the cops when one of my little darlings jacks you? What a sordid, disgusting college that is. What a sorry sick heap of sh!t. Posted by: gp, aka Mr. Tact at June 13, 2019 10:36 PM (mk9aG) Is Gibson Bakery still in business? I go up in that general direction occasionally, I'd go a little out of my way to give them some business. And what could I do to Oberlin College where they should just look the other way rather than press charges. It could be fun to use that defense against them with the same jury pool, lol. It's a *big* problem in historical games.
Apple briefly banned all games in the App Store that had Confederate flags in the game. Apple has also banned an excellent game on the war in Afghanistan, because the game portrayed the Taliban as the bad guys (really). "Shall" is just the snotty form of "will". There's no difference. Modern English only really uses "will" but if someone wants to put on airs then "shall" comes into play.
There are the cases of the imperative - "shall" can be strongly imperative while "will" is generally more descriptive: "You shall bring the car over tomorrow." - this is basically an order. "You will bring the car over tomorrow." - this is more of a prediction or matter of fact summation of what will occur, though it does depend on ones intonation. Do Not Talk Down to the Jury.
The weird thing is that Oberlin farmed out its defense to the biggest law firm in the local county. You'd think that they would have a sense of local juries, at least. However, the local law firm was probably overruled at every juncture by snotty Oberlin officials who knew better than the law firm on how to try a case. Posted by: Alberta Oil Peon at June 14, 2019 12:24 AM (WG6O9) I don't think the judge has made a decision as to whether the punitive damages will be reduced. Yes, under Ohio law the cap should be twice the compensatory damages, but as LI said this is not a hard cap but a guideline. In this case the compensatory damages were $11.2 million so technically the jury could award a maximum $22.4 million in punitive damages. But they awarded $33 million. It will be up to the judge to decide whether to knock the number down. As well, the jury awarded $150,000 in attorneys' fees. The judge will also get to decide the final number. Posted by: ThePrimordialOrderedPair at June 14, 2019 01:01 AM (vsj/L) No, no, you misunderstand. There was no change in tone or anything like that, the 'or else' was always assumed/implied. 'You will clean out the garage tomorrow'. Didn't matter the emphasis placed on any word in that sentence. Now the 'or else' depended on the severity of the 'will' being ignored. Not washing the cars? Not too bad. But not cleaning out the garage? The 'or else' consequences in ignoring that 'will' were too horrible to contemplate. Posted by: RickZ at June 14, 2019 01:11 AM (Y8PSl) 507

Posted by: DBCooper at June 14, 2019 01:01 AM (bttOm) If I had every rating up to and including Astronaut, and had any aircraft available, with every known state of the art boot or bleed air or other anti-icing option. I'd still walk before I'd fly in known icing conditions. Or suspected icing conditions. That I've surely done so countless times aboard airliners piloted by skilled and competent cockpit crew, with said jets employing boots, bleed and other aeronautical voodoo, makes no difference to me. I've steered a Gold Wing off of a freeway ramp, and checked into the nearest hotel, 'cause ice was beginning to stick to the polycarbonate windshield. And that bike was *already* "safely" on the ground. Can you tell that I have a "don't wanna die yet" respect for all that is ice? And yes, that includes sailing in Northern Latitudes in the winter months. Just, NO. I can sail, I can navigate. But sledging ice off of the mast, railings and other abovedecks fittings just doesn't seem like my idea of smooth sailing, at all. Watch YouToob videos of U.S. Navy aircraft landing aboard ship, in whiteout snowstorm conditions. No other Nation on the face of the earth, at present, is capable of such operations. Example: Before "Falklands", we used to let Argentine Navy tactical aircraft do touch and gos, and some traps, aboard U.S. Fleet Carriers. Daytime Ops only, blue sky, calm seas conditions. Now that England has launched a new carrier, I think they'll soon be back to Blue Water, all weather, all conditions ops. France might be able to, but oughtn't. Russia? Bwahahahahaha! They have the planes, and the pilots. They lack the ships....not just the carriers, but the whole damn logistic fleet that makes up a Carrier Group. China? They're practicing NavAirOps 101. And their ships are not ready for Prime Time, and won't be for a generation. Our U.S. pilots like YOU can land an iced up T-6 Brick. Theirs? I'll take the Vegas Odds on this, and will bet on your safe landing. Jim Sunk New Dawn Galveston, TX Posted by: Jim at June 14, 2019 01:27 AM (QzJWU) 529

Half-Million Dollars. $500k. I've given serious thought to the challenge. I have all of the skills. What amazes me on the series thus far, is the lack of going after Big Game to lay in a serious supply of smoked, cured meat to cover the Cold Months. And the same goes to the lack of building solid, tight, serious shelters. Depending on the lay of the land, those ought to be Tree House height in elevation, too. Fuck "camping". Build as if you were a settler, a Pioneer. And gather game the same way, as well as foraging for edible greens. Plant something that'd grow in that climate, too. Wanna win that challenge? Go at it like you're going to live there for the next FIVE years. And I've yet to see the one greatest sign of commitment to win. When you see a Challenger hurl his or her "OMG" radio forty yards off into the water on Day One, then you'll know who your winner is gonna be. This was not an accident, Google is in league with #communist China.
They see the future their #Communist #CulturalRevolution is bring about. And they love it!!! Hong Kongers alarmed by Google translation gaffe https://tinyurl.com/yymh3coq Hong Kong social media lit up on Friday when protesters noticed Google's translation software was briefly churning out a rather odd suggestion during a week that has seen the worst political violence to hit the city in decades. Eagle-eyed Google users discovered that when people entered the phrase "I am sad to see Hong Kong become part of China" the suggested translation in both Simplified and Traditional Chinese converted the word "sad" to "happy". "Oh my god, I can't believe my eyes," one Facebook user commented under one of the many screen grabs of the false translation that went viral on Friday. "The app intentionally mistranslates the English to 'so happy/content' instead of 'so sad'," added student Rachel Wong on Twitter. "I hope Google fixes this." When AFP entered the sentence "I am sad to see Hong Kong become part of China" on Friday morning it did show the wrong translation, replacing sad with happy. Good Morning Morons. I see the communists and the MFM (BIRM) are going bug fk nuts over a comment by Trump (after being set up by reporter) that if a foreign national told him he could give him some dirt on an opponent he would listen. Barky held what was probably the largest campaign rally in American history in a friggin foreign nation, for foreigners, with financial and logistical help from a friggin foreign government. Now, that was clearly illegal and un-Constitutional and Barky should have been tossed out of the race the minute he, unfortunately, returned here - and then criminally prosecuted and thrown in jail. And I happen to agree that foreigners have no business in American politics - NONE - but we have friggin dual citizens (who are foreigners for practical political purposes as they share an allegiance with a foreign nation) who are not only parts of campaigns but actually sitting in government (including Barky, who was born a dual national and, thus, ineligible) and the friggin dems have illegals working on their campaigns and THAT is the sort of shit that should have been totally shut down years and years ago. I'm hoping that Donald Trump sees this, as I think he does, and continues the sanctions that keep Iran out of countries, in which, they do not belong. Thank you. Luckily I have a session with the outplacement service on Monday, where I intend to go through the job description and see how best to speak to each point. I had a meeting with my manager yesterday about the cost of my search tools and how they're structured. I'm afraid I allowed myself to express quite a bit of bitterness. I said that I was a consistently misused asset, that for 10 years I had tried to show people what patent and literature information could do for them and for 10 years I was politely told to go outside and play. I said I had never felt like a member of a team but like a kitchen utensil, pulled out of the drawer when needed, tossed back in when done and not thought about otherwise. Ah, well. Ultimately, we're all a cost to the MBAs. They hate employees because they think that by getting a salary we're stealing from shareholders. And I never, ever trust the fine words of management about attracting and retaining talent. Posted by: Hadrian the Seventh at June 14, 2019 06:33 AM (Wx/+I) 703

We do have much stupidity in our controlling elites. I liken it to people wanting great roads. Well, if people would not drive on them, the roads will be in great shape. Sarah Palin spoke for me when she said that a ship is safe in a harbor (unless you are an Iranian Dhow) but that is not what ships are for. Those MBAs, so sure of themselves, choose poorly. As an aside, I do some patent & literature searching as part of my startup. We should talk. I do have a personal account on STN. Posted by: NaCly Dog at June 14, 2019 06:40 AM (u82oZ) 707
Oh, and now some of my main customers (up North and in Europe) are getting nervous now that they've heard the rumor that I won't be around any more. I said I had no idea what they're going to do now that the MBAs basically said, "Use Google for patent searches". I said we'd never make changes to a plant process like we handle R&D. "Hey, maintaining these pressure-relief valves is a pain, let's just get rid of them." Then afterwards worry about what the effect will be. Well, I always feel us chemists can do better with CA Plus and CA Old than any librarian. I honed my skills over the years, and then turbo-boosted them by spending a lot of Federal dollars in the Patent Office. I think the Patent Office is the #1 spender on STN. From Media Matters
But in fact, while it is illegal to accept contributions from foreign nationals for political campaigns (as Trump suggested he would do), paying a foreign national fair market value for opposition research is generally not illegal, So when you get info from foreign source just drop a check in the mail and it is legal. "He didn't want any competition for available food supplies"
I had to smile at that one. Seriously, though, I suspect the main driver behind the IL abortion law was Personal PAC, an IL political action committee that has boatloads of money and one and only one goal: electing the most rabidly pro-abort office holders possible. They are a major funding source for Dems in this state. Plus the passage of the MO abortion law meant lots of new potential customers for certain downstate abortion facilities....there's one in Granite City, right across from STL, and one in Springfield that would be within a 2- to 3-hour drive of most places in NE or mid MO. Of course, CNN says the video only shows "a claim" the Iranian patrol boat is removing the dud.
No CNN, it really, actually shows the removal. You could try arguing the US "claims" its a mine. But that would be advocating the terrorists side, so you opted to deny the obvious instead, and label what your own eyes see happening as a "claim". Fuck you. Posted by: Huck Follywood, the Demofascists are certifiable For a couple of years at CWRU, I live up on top of the hill in Cleveland Heights, and when we walked down the stairs, we were in Cleveland (Murray Hill Road). Yeah, Little Italy was just a walk down Murray Hill, where you could catch some of the mobsters in their big, black Caddies. And then there was the Black Mac (MacDonalds), over on Euclid, where they kept the bathrooms locked, and there was ALWAYS a security guard in the place. Today, it is actually a lot nicer, and a lot less crime. Posted by: Bozo Conservative....unfrozen caveman moron at June 14, 2019 07:49 AM (S6Pax) 802
