Saturday Morning Coffee Break

satbreak.png

***

Good morning Horde. Let us take a peek at a few stories that didn't get their due here at the AoSHQ this past week.

Life has returned to almost normal.

***

  • Of course alcohol was involved. And a McDonald's.

  • Continuing with our alcohol theme.

  • Sorry buddy, you're still a man.

  • The perfect job for a Moron.

  • Japan says no more flying drones while intoxicated.

  • I think I could do this challenge.

  • Parents these days.

  • Obviously this gal isn't the brightest bulb in the pack.

Rules? Well don't pee in the pool. No running with sharp objects and play nice with one another. Life is good.

    Have a great weekend!!!!

Er... that's Fil-American phone, please. Pinoy phone is also acceptable.

They won't even need to supply a charger, it'll last the whole week with power to spare. And the charger would have the wrong adapter anyway.

The docs don't like to call the place the "emergency room" or ER any longer; it's the "emergency department" or ED because emergency medicine is now a specialty requiring a 3- or 4-year residency after med school and internship. So I guess they had to upgrade the old ER with a new name.

Heh. Here in town, we have the Redemption World Outreach Church. It used to be run by a white guy with huge fake, white teeth and nugget gold-type jewelry until the wife was caught having an affair and it all looked bad. In his place is a black guy now. The guy and his wife live in a massively-gated community. I've driven through there. His house is in the $millions. His wife drives, I think, a $250k Lamborghini, and he caused a ruckus for wearing $2000k shoes while preaching one Sunday. Many in his congregation believe he "deserves" it.

48 Jaguars exist. Men exist. Mental problems exist. Plastic surgery exists. A nut job can have all the surgery in the world to try to become a jaguar. He may be very exited and happy about his surgery and think he has become a jaguar. He hasn't. Every man and every jaguar can see that he is just a crazy man with surgical alterations.
If he insists he is a jaguar, I am fine with him living a life of self delusion. But I reject any notion that forces me to accept him as anything but a man with serious mental issues, who attacked the symptoms and not the problem.

    50 Hi everyone!

I have been trying to reduce my phone use (she said, typing on her mobile). I took up cross stitch as a new hobby to fill empty moments. The bad part is that most patterns are sissy (flowers, puppies and kittens, etc.) and I'm not good enough to make my own (rocket ships, reproductions of Pointillist paintings, F1 cars, etc.) yet. But the time will come.

Fenelon, if you're awake - I saw your comments last night, and my sister does have stress in her life, this is true. (not happy with her job, struggling with blending her new family) However, so do I, and I'm still managing not to treat our rapidly aging parents like they're inconvenient or refer to the suicide attempt of someone under my care as something that is happening to *me*. I'm out of empathy for my sister's problems at this point. Which I guess is wrong of me, but...

One of the things I'm struggling with is that I know a few things about my parents' health that my sister doesn't know. I feel I should tell her, because maybe she will stop being a pill to them if she realizes there may be some really serious stuff going on, but I'm worried she will instead behave in a way that makes it even worse for them. (She does know enough other things that she should be well aware the situation has some unpleasant possibilities, which is why I think her handling it poorly is likely. It's the most recent developments she hasn't heard about.)

I mean, seriously. Who tells her ailing father that she has a "small window" available for him on Father's Day and makes a bunch of excuses for why she can't bring her children to see their grandfather?

Anyway. Time to get up and get shit done! Gotta clean the house and do some work, and I also have a 7yo and a 3yo to play with.

51 BLACK HAT USA 2019 KEYNOTE UPDATE

Black Hat has chosen to remove U.S. Representative, Will Hurd, as our 2019 Black Hat USA Keynote. We misjudged the separation of technology and politics. We will continue to focus on technology and research, however we recognize that Black Hat USA is not the appropriate platform for the polarizing political debate resulting from our choice of speaker. We are still fully dedicated to providing an inclusive environment and apologize that this decision did not reflect that sentiment.

I'm in my mid-50s, but back in my 20s I used to do a lot of cross stitch and loved doing it. I mostly followed (sissy) patterns, but did try and create my own a time or two. It was hard. Let's just say, Renoir I'm not. I have very little artistic talent. But with girls being boys, and boys being girls, and outlawed boy/girl depictions in UK ads...it's only a matter of time until some brawny patterns start coming out to replace the flowers and heartwarming statements surrounded by ribbons (yes, I did cross stitch that last one for real).

71 Shame for this to get willowed right prior to the Saturday coffee thread.

88 WHERE YOUR COFFEE COMES FROM

Buenos Dias--Good morning from the the Land of Coffee. Altitude here is between 5000' and 6000'. Temps are mostly between 60 and 80 degrees. The view is marvelous, and the people ,in general, some of the kindest most helpful in the world. We have over 40,000 coffee trees, but many are older and need cut and re-sprouted or outright replaced. All the work here is done by hand because of the terrain. Many of the coffee fincas (farms) are much smaller, 5 to 10 acres. Ours is 40 acres.

This is my retirement venture, and a challenging one to be sure. Most larger farm owners live in town and come out a few times a week to (or less) to "supervise"--lol. We live on the farm, and take a completely active role in its function. I have a foreman that supervises workers, and he lives right beside me, on the farm. When we planted 4000 new trees last year, I helped carry the trees to the area to be planted. This is a pretty arduous task in the mountains.

One of the workers ( who was new) asked my foreman "Where did you find a gringo to work on the farm?". He was shocked to discover I was the owner. Most of the workers are transient, and primarily contract workers. I am pleased to report that workers are always pleased to return here to work. we pay a little bit more than others, but we get higher quality workers that are conscientious and honest in their work. They tell us that here, they have the best food that can be found, and our dormitory has is well lite and completely wired with electricity. They also have a tv and a dvd player. We have several hundred movies on dvd and change them out regularly. work starts @ 6am Monday through Friday, break for breakfast at 8 am, lunch at noon, and dinner about 5pm. Pickers are paid by the kilo for what they pick, and they work at their own pace.

I was surprised to discover that most workers avoid owners as much as possible. Last year, our first here, they were surprised that we lived here, and not only would I talk to them, but I would work WITH them. So, we try to live by the golden rule/ Treat others as you want them to treat you. Our foreman has had several job offers, but declined them, and as reported to me, told them he would be pleased to work here for the rest of his life.

As Father's day approaches I recall my father's advice to me many year's ago---
Where ever you go, always try to leave it better than you found it. If you do things right, your return will always be welcomed.

    God bless you all.

I think Wray's chief qualification was that he was available and able to get past the Senate.

People forget just how screwed up things were when Trump took office. The Deep State had just claimed Flynn's scalp and his own 'allies' in the House were muttering about impeachment.

Wray was one of the few Establishment types that didn't chant "f8ck you" during the campaign, so he got the gig. I think both CIA and FBI need new leadership.

BTW, Barr's probe might be the key to achieving this.

86 California Court Rules Inmates Can Have Marijuana in Prison if They Do Not Smoke It

A California court has ruled that it is okay for inmates to have marijuana while in prison, so long as they do not inhale it.

3rd District Court of Appeals ruled that California voters legalized recreational possession of less than an ounce of cannabis in 2016, with no exception even for those behind bars. However, it is state law that marijuana cannot be smoked inside of a prison.

Therefore, the court ruled, inmates can be in possession of small amounts of marijuana, but cannot smoke or inhale it in any way. It is unclear if the California Attorney General will appeal the ruling.

and it's easy to say "well I'll just arm myself!" but that doesn't stop them from throwing molotov cocktails through your windows at night. So you either live in a medieval castle and have enough resources to hire armed guards to man the ramparts 24 hours a day, or you have law.

On the one hand, I'm sure almost all prison guards would love for their inmates to be stoned all day, it makes them very passive and easy to control. On the other hand, legalizing marijuana like that is going to cut down on the prison guards number one source of income, and they might not like to lose out on that.

133 Might have been covered prior around here but it blows the mind that "our" govt has not fashioned laws with stiff criminal penalties for destroying administrative documents (ICE speech transcripts) where doing so did not otherwise fulfill another written superseding law or otherwise excepting such destruction (ie, duplicates, by court order, etc). Obama continues to skate along laughing at alm us law-abiding suckers.

Reminds me of the line from Good Fellas that went something like you're either a wiseguy or your little people. The suckers work 9-5 for bum checks, we see what we want we just take it. Suckers follow the law - wiseguys ignore it, work around it.

You just know that jugeared prick modeled his existence as if he was some sort of wiseguy Chicago genius. Sick thing is that canary d-ck little halfsie would shatter with the pressure of working for the good rather than self-aggrandizement. Good *MUST* prevail against that punk at some point, dammit.

No, that can't be blamed on him. Texas liquor laws are unbelievable weird, and luckily mostly fading away, but they date back to the end of Prohibition in the 30's.

Only a carrier licenses with the TABC (Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission) is allowed to transport alcohol of any kind for purchase or resale. Only an organization with a Permit from the TABC is allowed to ship alcohol to purchasers in Texas. Currently, no business or person outside the State of Texas is allowed to obtain such a permit. Hard Liquor sales must all come from licensed package stores located in the county where the sale is made.

On the plus side, underage drinking is usually illegal, but if a child is with their parents and the parents approve, then it is allowed. Also, if someone is married to an underage spouse, they are allowed to legally get that spouse as drunk as they want, no matter what her age is.

One law that almost passed that I would have liked to see was the proposed law legalizing beer and wine sales at all gun shows. Almost passed, but I guess some people thought that would send a bad message.

but child brides, that's still a-ok.

    211 168 Weird liquor laws?

    Pffffffft.

Posted by: Pennsylvania at June 15, 2019 09:46 AM (nDe2U)

Yeah. Until recently, hard liquor and wine were sold only in state-owned liquor stores. In fact the sign used to read STATE STORE, but they changed it a few years ago the friendlier-sounding Wine & Spirit Shoppe. Some of us 29 year olds still call them by the old name.

Beer by the case is only sold at beer distributors. They can also sell wine coolers, but not wine or hard liquor. Bars and some restaurants sell six-packs for takeout, but not full cases.

Supermarkets and convenience stores are right out.*

Once I went on a trip to Vermont with a couple of friends. It was late and we wanted to get some beer to take back to the motel. We stopped at a bar and I went in to get some. The bartender looked at me like I had three heads. "This is a bar. We don't sell six-packs here."

*Due to a recent change in the law, some supermarkets can now sell beer and wine. The first time I saw a display it stopped me in my tracks. I thought I was hallucinating.

One interesting booze law in Texas-

Until sometime in the 70s it was perfectly legal to drink beer while driving.

That's right...cruising down a Texas highway in your pick up with the windows down, drinking on a long neck.

I'm probably wrong but I think Dolph (short for Adolph!!!) Briscoe took that one away.

    *shakes fist at sky*

I replaced a bunch of asbestos pipe insulation in my folks' house awhile ago. They needed a new steam boiler and the bid they got was ridiculous. So I wore a mask, wetted the stuff down, double-bagged it and cleaned up very carefully. It took two hours and saved $3,000.

I think it's reasonable to impose an 18 year old age limit since nicotine is a drug, and the fruit flavors do seemed to be aimed at kids, so maybe that needs to be dialed back a notch.

As a longtime smoker, I just buy the tobacco-flavored vape juice. If I wanted candy flavor I'd light a Twizzler on fire.

    -
I read the opening lines of Douglas Adams' The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul the other day:white

IT CAN HARDLY be a coincidence that no language on earth has ever produced the expression "As pretty as an airport." Airports are ugly. Some are very ugly. Some attain a degree of ugliness that can only be the result of a special effort. This ugliness arises because airports are full of people who are tired, cross, and have just discovered that their luggage has landed in Murmansk (Murmansk airport is the only known exception to this otherwise infallible rule), and architects have on the whole tried to reflect this in their designs.

Thank goodness it won't be too crowded.

285 There was a time, back before I turned 29 the first time when airports were fantastic places. Now they suck. I regularly use SeaTac and the whole process is now just a necessary evil.

286 And from all accounts the Vancouver airport is awesome.

    Never seen it myself.

Vancouver: Canadian version of Seattle/Portland/San Franny.

The relative niceness of the scenery is beside the point.

291 "Do the lawyers here feel just a little ashamed of their profession when crap like this comes down?"
I think a lot of the legal profession gets off knowing it can inflict lunacy on the rest of us."posted by: Mr. Peebles

There are enough of those (Mueller seemed to enjoy screwing over Flynn, and the dawn raids on elderly Trumpers) ... to cause massive problems. The "good" lawyers in smaller towns for example, just want to do the normal stuff, but won't "take on" the few bigger boys with clout.

It becomes communism really ... lawfare, certain protected people get away with anything, get in their way and get threatened. The average middle can't fund a lawyer (I was told I'd have to get someone from out of town, out of the cabal, by several people "in the know") ... so those with money get more money, and it grows till well established corrupt lines run the community, state, country ... world.

294 Infidel - I'd have that all cleaned up by the end of the day, a million things will kill you before asbestos will.
And have no idea why you would have asbestos in a attic unless your in a ship or a factory.
Posted by: Skip at June 15, 2019 10:07 AM (BbGew)

Second that! Wear a disposable dust mask to keep plaster dust out of your lungs. It will also block any asbestos, in the unlikely event there is any present. You might want to damp down the debris with a fine mist of water, and suck it up with a wet vac.

Asbestos is simply not that dangerous, except to smokers with long-term industrial exposure to high levels of airborne short-fiber.

298 It's ridiculous that ace has trouble with advertisers. RIDICULOUS. From his Alexa rank I'm guessing he has at least a couple million monthly uniques, which should be enough to make sure the site has no worries in that regard.

But uniques aren't everything, and there's no reliable metric for engagement. I know from common sense that engagement at AoS is SUPER strong, but now I have proof....

When I post a link to one of my memes on a supposedly important Twitter bluecheck dork's tweet, someone with a lot of "followers," I consider it successful if a couple of hundred people click through to it.

Ace placed a (partially functional) link to my cuckshed joke in his sidebar, and guess how many people have followed through? Because it's forty thousand so far. Forty. Freaking. Thousand.

Advertisers should be tossing cash at that ewok.
